Hokusai’s Great Wave

Leonardo & Engineering

‘The Great Wave’ is a woodblock print by Japanese artist Hokusai. The print shows a monster of a wave rearing up to come crashing down on three fishing boats and their crews. One of a monumental series known as ‘Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji’, Hokusai’s Great Wave – with the graceful snowclad Mount Fuji on the horizon – has become an iconic image of the power of nature and smallness of man. This beautifully illustrated book explores the meaning behind Hokusai’s Great Wave, in the context of the Mount Fuji series and Japanese art as a whole. Taking a look at the Wave’s significance, this concise introduction explains why Hokusai’s masterpiece had such an impact after its creation in 1830 and why it continues to fascinate and inspire today.

The term “engineering” comes from the Latin word “ingenium” that means talent, gift. Thus, according to this definition, the engineer was an intelligent, practical man, able to solve problems. Who better than Leonardo could fit this description perfectly? Leonardo studied in depth ancient texts and the treatises written by the most innovative Florentine and Sienese engineers of that time. In the letter of employment written to Ludovico il Moro in 1482, Leonardo presented himself as an architect and as a skilled military and hydraulic engineer, adding only at the end his ability in sculpture and painting. The artist studied engineering in more than a thousand folios, now kept in the Codex Atlanticus and in the first of the Madrid manuscripts.

Giorgio Vasari, Leonardo’s first biographer, said that the artist used to sketch “many designs for architecture”. In fact, in the “letter of employment” written to Ludovico il Moro, Leonardo presented himself as a military engineer, declaring that he “can give perfect satisfaction and to the equal of any other in architecture and the composition of buildings public and private”. Leonardo studied several ancient texts but also the treatises of his own time: in particular the treatise of military and civil architecture by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. This allows us to understand his competence in architecture and his plan of the “ideal city”, being organized on two different levels, one for pedestrians and the other for vehicle transportation.

Leonardo was an apprentice in Verrocchio’s workshop, where the young artist was fascinated by the lively and updated environment. Verrocchio taught the practice of drawing to the young Leonardo, who learnt how to describe the world around him with meticulous observation. Moreover, the artist made models in plaster or clay to understand the world around him in order to reproduce it perfectly. This book traces the career of the artist, passing from the first works by Leonardo with Verrocchio to the greater masterpieces. A train of thoughts connects and explains great frescoes, small paintings and prestigious commissions that have influenced so many artists.

As is well known, Leonardo defines painting as the “daughter of nature”. His observation of nature, his fascination with every living thing that surrounded him was the main source of his drawings. His entire life was dedicated to investigating and trying to understand the laws of nature. Nature is observed, studied and depicted in all its forms. In fact, Leonardo constantly aims at reproducing every element of nature: animals, flowers, fruits, birds and also, a female smile, the throbbing of the hearth or - following a series of examples - the intricate plait of Renaissance hairdos. All these elements have in common the uninterrupted flow of the secret of life.

$24.95 • 152 pages • full color throughout • 2012 • Paperback • 9788895686202 Leonardo’s anatomical studies actually set themselves as an ideal meeting point between artistic and scientific interests because the study of the functioning of the body was essential for artistic practice in order to achieve the correct representation of the human figure. For Leonardo, the artistic practice was determined by an inexhaustible desire for knowledge that led him to study the human body through the Vitruvian proportions and through dissection. Drawing becomes essential to understand and reproduce the structure of the male and female body, a “wonderful machine” perfectly thought out. The organs are devices and the body is a machine: Man then becomes a further testing ground for mechanical science.

$24.95 • 160 pages • full color throughout 2012 • Paperback • Italian/English text 9788895686257 One of the most exciting challenges faced by Leonardo was to create robots made to resemble human or animal, or rather automatic selfoperating devices. The technological excellence achieved during the 15th century, and the impetus in Mechanics and Engineering, developed in Leonardo a growing interest in humanoid automata and in selfoperating machines. Leonardo’s automata are the subjects of the research of this book that collects the results presented by scholars that have studied Leonardo from different perspectives.

This volume collects a series of complex and variously articulated themes that involve on a theoretical and historical basis both the world of architecture and that of urban planning, as well as that of sculpture and of painting. The period here analyzed is certainly the most operational for Leonardo, during his frequent movements in the large and complex political, economic, cultural and artistic theater that was central Italy between 1500 and 1516. It is in this historical and geographical context that the focal points of the research of Starnazzi emerge with spontaneous emphasis: Florence, Cortona-Arezzo, Rome and Amboise where the artist spends the last years of his life, from 1517 to 1519.

The Chateau de Clos-Luce in Amboise is known, not only for its beauty, but as the last home of Leonardo da Vinci. This volume, edited by Professor Carlo Pedretti, presents a series of research on the relationship between Leonardo da Vinci and France not only during his stay in Amboise (1516-1519) but also in his Artist Milanese period (1507-1513).

In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the European Community, a most spectacular Leonardo exhibition in the grand Koekelberg Basilica on the outskirts of Brussels is having unprecedented success on account of the skillful and most attractive presentation of every aspect of Leonardo’s powerful mind. This is made evident by his work as an artist, scientist and technologist shown through original documents, reproductions of works of art, original paintings and drawings as well as an actual size photograph on silk of the early copy of Leonardo’s Last Supper. The loan of these items, which has been exceptionally granted by the Royal Library in Turin, is the first to a location outside Italy.

The Battle of Anghiari By Leonardo Da Vinci Margherita Melani

Leonardo’s Angel in the Flesh went on display for the first time in the great exhibition on Leonardo’s Bridges organized by Sweden in order to celebrate its entrance into the European Community in 1993 and 1994. It received much attention by the media, making numerous newspaper headlines. And since it was all too easy to recognize the appearance of the demoniacal Salai - the handsome boy, object of Leonardo’s presumed homosexual attentions - in this singular blasphemous image in the nude, the Swedish exhibition was to include another novelty, the counterpart of the same character in the painting of a Dressed-up Salai in the Alos Foundation.

There is the Mona Lisa, for which we do not know the exact year of commencement, The Last Supper, whose state of conservation has always given rise to particular concern, and the Battle of Anghiari, whose renown goes well beyond the actual existence of the work. It is this ongoing research that motivated the publication of this volume, which aims to record the known facts about the Battle of Anghiari. Based on descriptions and eyewitness accounts, this study presents a variety of documents, such as literary sources, that describe the painting and figurative evidence.

It is not easy to understand Michelangelo’s painting, an artist who has created masterpieces like the Doni Tondo, the decoration of a part of the Sistine Chapel, or The Last Judgement, three decades later. Catalog of the exhibition held in Florence from May 17 to August 31, 2012. The book describes the life and work of Andrea Commodi (15601638) who has left a large group of autograph sheets where we recognize copies of drawings and sketches by Michelangelo. Starting from these, the volume parallels the copies to the original Michelangelo, making a comparison of exceptional visual effect and a scientific examination, according to the collectible point of view.

Catalog of two Giuliano Pini’s exibitions held in 2002 in Florence and Fiesole. The paintings shown in the first section (L’Edificio del Sogno) deal with the music of Richard Wagner, while the second section (Il sogno mediterraneo) shows works which have been inspired by dance, especially flamenco. For over thirty years, the life of Giuliano Pini has been illuminated by a love for Music, as attested by his genuine passion, first as an amateur and then as a fine connoisseur.

The fascinating spectrum of picture production in Rome between 1590 and the beginning of the High Baroque period is investigated based on the conditions of the northern Europe derived and the indigenous artists and art dealers. Beginning with print graphics, the study uses a mediaspecific approach to investigate the creative energies that made the city into a center and laboratory of artistic exchange in those years. Through the analysis of the Roman activities of artists like Hendrick Goltzius, Philippe Thomassin, Jacques Callot, Matthäus Greuter and Claude Mellan as well as through countless new discoveries and extensive illustrations, this book is an indispensable reference and survey work for art history and the transfer of European culture in the early modern period.

In the tension of the various disciplines, Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) is regarded internationally as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The present volume approaches Beuys from different angles, and in the process reveals new and surprising findings. Joseph Beuys: Parallel Processes - The Archaeology of an Artistic Practice is a compilation of the results of a symposium held in January 2011 to accompany the exhibition of the same name in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Recognized Beuys experts, art historians and philosophers, along with theatre and museum specialists, explore the artist’s current relevance. His intellectual superstructure is taken into account no less than the development of his ‘sculptural theory’.

$50.00 • 276 pages • Illustrated • 2013 • Hardback • German text 9783777451312 The three artists to whom the exhibition is devoted— Ferdinand Hodler, Aleksandr Deyneka and Neo Rauch—stand in the twentieth century for the utopia of the ‘New Man’. They exemplify with their artistic oeuvre the three stages through which the concept has passed. The early years of the twentieth century were marked by the life-reform movement, which fed on the ideas of Romanticism. The Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler was one of the leading artistic exponents of this movement. One of Hodler’s most important successors was the Russian painter Aleksandr Deyneka. In his motifs, he took his bearings from the eurhythmic movements of the Swiss artist’s figures, but placed them in prospering industrial landscapes. Finally, the painter Neo Rauch, who grew up and received his artistic training in communist East Germany, takes up the type of the ‘New Man’. However, his figures exaggerate the aspect of inhibited action and this aspect emerges in aimless and absurd configurations.

Mittelalterliche Schatzkunst in Westfalen

Goldsmith work developed to a high artistic degree in Westphalia since the thirteenth century when the flowering of the episcopal and Hanseatic cities helped connect the European cultural landscape. These currently little known or noted valuables are now for the first time appreciated in their various historical, social, and technical facets in an extensive special exhibition. In flashes of gold, silver and precious stones, the opulent catalog brings an important chapter of Westphalian art and cultural history to new life. The essays by noted specialists on the treasure of the Middle Ages and the history of Wesphalia explain the functions of the medieval display of splendor as well as the motives for the founding of valuable works of art and the meaning church treasure. The exhibits are documented in 450 current photographs, which make the catalog into a standard work for medieval treasury art.

The works of Philipp Otto Runge were of central importance to the development of German Romanticism. Runge served as a role model to many as he sought for continuous renewal in his work. His theory of color was not only of relevance for the artists at the Bauhaus, but was reflected upon again and again well into the 20th Century. With a large and monographic exhibition, the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung, Munich, honor Runge’s influence. The articles collected in this book illustrate all aspects of the works of Bridget Riley. Etc. It explores the influence of Seurat on their work, the role of color in the history of art and the relationship between nature and perception of deity. About it, there are also sound analyzes of works by other artists such as Titian, Veronese, Monet, Cézanne, and Bruce Nauman. The lyrics reflect the attitude of the artist on the various themes and discourses of the past decades, such as the critique of modernism, to the point of abstraction, and the situation of postmodernism. The book is dedicated to the life, artistic development, and Riley’s statements on art and other artists.

In her long career as an artist, Georgia O’Keeffe put to the test a range of artistic possibilities and motifs through often-enigmatic pictures. Although her symphonic color compositions belonged to a classically developed repertoire of the art of the 20th century, she documented the disengagement of American art from the traditions of Europe as well as the emancipation of an artist. In the photographs of her gallery owner and later husband Alfred Stieglitz, she even found herself as an art object through his famous photos of her, which were considered shockingly erotic at the time. The facets of her life and work were complimented through the photography of such artists as Ansel Adams, Todd Webb and Arnold Newman. The catalog for the exhibit of the HypoKunsthalle Munich presents an overview of her entire life with a representative selection of her paintings and works on paper in various techniques and sculptures.

A pioneer of art microphotography, Carl Struewe was one of the leading protagonists of German photographic art in the twentieth century. With his works ‘Forms of the Microcosmos’, dating from between 1926 and 1959, he was entering decidedly new photographic territory, arousing the attention of the photo-avant-garde worldwide. After a training as a lithographer and graphic artist, he devoted himself, entirely self-taught, to the then ‘new medium’ of photography. With his early landscape and travel pictures following the trail of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in Italy, he set standards in photographic historiography even before Albert Renger-Patzsch. Even though Carl Struewe’s work has recently attracted attention once more both at national and international level, there has been no comprehensive assessment of his total oeuvre, a gap that has now been filled. With more than 200 illustrations from all the phases of his creative life, we now have the first illustrated book on Carl Struewe’s complete works.

New York is the capital of photography. Already before 1900, the rapidly developing skyline and the dynamism of the metropolis encouraged the pioneers of the new medium. They photographed skyscrapers, the ports, train stations and developed photography for art. Alfred Stieglitz, the avant-garde photographer and art promoter, presented them for the first time with more modern painters. In this environment developed the pictoralism of an impressionistic concept of imagery into the two directions of American photography: street photography and photographic abstraction. The catalog for this exhibition presents 170 works from 40 photographers and five essays on new research into American photography in the first half of the 20th century.

Hours of Infinity is the catalogue of an exhibition and performance by artist John Kannenberg at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the Work Gallery in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The three bodies of work comprising Hours of Infinity use an imprecise drawing method coupled with a disciplined approach to sonic observation that merge with elements of ancient Egyptian and Greek philosophies, contemporary museum theory and mathematical proofs to investigate the timelessly beautiful imperfection inherent within the human experience of the Infinite. The catalogue features full color plates of the drawings in the exhibition, photographs documenting the making of the exhibitions and performance, and images showing the relationship of both to the collections and space of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. The catalog is designed and written by artist John Kannenberg and features a foreword by sonic arts critic Marc Weidenbaum and an introduction by Egyptologist T.G. Wilfong.

$35.00 • 144 pages • Illustrated • 2012 Hardback • 9781921394669 David Bardas recalls how his wife, Sandra Bardas, who died in 2007, sought every opportunity to photograph the graffiti she spotted in Australian cities and international centers on their business trips around the world. Her interest dates back to the 1990s, before the art form’s current popularity and entry into the art market. He suggests that she recognized and empathized with the free spirit and rebelliousness of the mostly anonymous graffiti artists and their need to be seen and heard. An artist herself, and a mother of six, she was unafraid to speak out and was attracted by the color and inventiveness demonstrated in the photographic images which are the subject of this book. Ken McGregor comments on current examples of stencil and graffiti in Melbourne laneways and how stencil artists’ works are now attracting art collectors.

$35.00 • 144 pages • Illustrated • 2012 Hardback • 9781921394829 The fact that Sydney artist Julian Meagher originally studied medicine might be deduced from the proliferation of body images in his paintings. From classical life drawing and persuasive portraiture studied in Italy and Sydney, Meagher has moved to the depiction of intricate tattoos on the backs, torsos, shoulders, arms and legs of male subjects. This might be seen as a new episode of Pop art with the globalization of cultural practices originating in the Eastùparticularly Japan, where Meagher has frequently travelled. His Pop imagery also extends to festival scenes and the elevation of supermarket and liquor-shop packages and products to symbols of our times. This is thought-provoking art with a very original and timely edge.

Melbourne’s ROAR group of young artists emerged in the early 1980s as a rebellion against many of the mores of the then art world. They created wild and colorful paintings, drank beer instead of wine and set up studios and an exhibition space in Brunswick Street. Now, thirty years later, the art of Wayne Eager, Sarah Faulkner, Andrew and Peter Ferguson, Pasquale Giardino, Karan Hayman, Ann Howie, Mark Howson, David Larwill, Michael Nicholls, Jill Noble, Mark Schaller and Judi Singleton has been both re-viewed and re-commissioned for an extraordinary book. This huge and colorful volume is as inventive in its production values as this group’s approach to art deserves.

This magnificent book, authored by Lucy Ellem, outlines the life and career of a major proponent of the art of watercolor. John Borrack is a significant Australian landscape artist who has travelled the country recording its extraordinary landforms. The more than 270 pages are fully color illustrated with hundreds of reproductions. His landscapes, mainly executed in water color and lavishly reproduced in this book, record the beauty of this region and then extend to many remote areas of the continent where extraordinary land formations range from the ‘picturesque’ to the ‘sublime’.

Danila Vassilieff was a passionate, freedomloving Cossack who burst upon the Australian art scene in the mid-1930s. The author suggests that the emotionalism and originality of his art, and his unconventional lifestyle, had a leavening effect on the art of Nolan, Tucker, Hester, Percival, Blackman, and Arthur Boyd. Vassilieff’s immediate and imaginative response to the Australian landscape deepened this impact. This critical survey of Vassilieff’s painting and sculpture is richly illustrated and fully documented with catalogs of his creative output in both areas. It also provides the moving story of a legendary character who died poverty-stricken, in 1958, at the age of 60.

This catalog covers the latest of a series of international exhibitions staged by Heritage Malta. The exhibition in Malta includes over one hundred pieces from the Khalili Collection. Most were made by, or at the workshop of, Plácido Zuloaga in the small town of Eibar in northern Spain. Different metals were fused together, hammered and chiseled to create precious treasures of fine metal craftsmanship including chests, vases, jewelry and objects from everyday life.

2013 marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of Mattia Preti (1613-1699). Mattia Preti emerged as a leading exponent of the forceful Baroque of mid-17th century Italy, working in a tradition which brilliantly captured the characteristics of monumental dynamism and theatrical appeal. An extraordinary draughtsman and painter, he was quick with his brush and produced hundreds of pictures, which spanned a career of some seventy years.

This book studies the mechanics of patronage of Roman Baroque sculpture produced for the Knights of the Order of St John and discusses the extent of such patronage together with the artistic and historical importance of the works. The book divides the works into three categories: those, which glorified the Orders patron St John the Baptist, the funerary monuments of the Grand Masters, and those made for the service and adoration of the Eucharist.

This book is about Fr. Edgar Vella’s Neapolitan crib, which knows its success mainly to three factors: light, form, and color, that, fused together, reveal the infinite love of God towards humanity to the point of taking the form of man and being born poor among the poor, to redeem all in the same manner: the rich, the powerful, the underprivileged, the marginated, the afflicted, the suffering, the downtrodden.

Gozo of the sixties carried some distinct appeal as artists and celebrities were attracted to visit regularly or reside here. Henry Mayo Bateman settled here, spending the final years of his life in Gozo until his death. His years here were spent painting scenes of Gozo and Gozo-life. A cartoonist who created “The Man who…” series, Bateman was a celebrity in his time and contributed to a range of publications. This monograph is the first study of this loved British cartoonist and his works he did in Gozo.

Madonna and Child, also known as ‘Dudley Madonna’, was painted in c. 1508 by Giovanni Bellini (Venice, c. 1430–1516), one of the most celebrated of Italian artists. This book tells the story of the painting, its painter and its provenance – the journey from Bellini’s 16th-century Venice to Dudley’s 19th-century London – and the context in which it was created, and later collected. The painting was probably acquired in Bologna by John William Ward, who in 1827 became the 1st Earl of Dudley. His contemporaries described him as a cultured and educated man, but also, tending to madness. The Dudley collection was one of the most outstanding in 19th-century England. The years 1505–10 were crucial ones in Giovanni Bellini’s career, and this book examines anew the part he played in Venetian High Renaissance painting. It looks in particular at the importance of the visit to the Venice of the Florentine Fra Bartolommeo in 1508.

Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was Charles II’s Principal Painter and the outstanding artistic figure of Restoration England. When Lely arrived in England in the early 1640s, his ambition was to be a painter of narrative scenes and not to work as a portraitist. However, the ‘subject pictures’ did not find favor with many English patrons and he produced less than thirty. As Lely’s friend Richard Lovelace explained, all they wanted was “their own dull counterfeits” or portraits of their mistresses. Thus, Lely was obliged to turn to portraiture to make a living. Yet, his poetic pictures of figures in idyllic landscapes are among the most beautiful paintings made in 17th-century England and this catalog will be the first in-depth look at this important chapter of this major painter’s career.

Sir Harold Samuel bequeathed the collection to the City of London to hang at Mansion House. Now in the care of the Guildhall Museum and Art Gallery, the collection of 84 paintings can be viewed at Mansion House on organized tours or by appointment. Built between 1732 and 1754, the House is the home, office and center of entertaining for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the Corporation. This guide will enable visitors to take a tour through Mansion House and discover the artists and their subjects – landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes – the development of styles, forms, materials and techniques, and the history of the collection.

This full-color catalog explores the interrelationships between the East and West during the first millennium. This was the first time that the Roman Empire was gradually replaced by barbarian invaders, who spread through Europe and created new styles of jewelry; it was also when the capital shifted eastward to the newly founded city of Constantinople. Among the themes treated are the transition from Late Roman types to Byzantine ones, including the design of new shapes; an interest in exotic stones and changes in fashion; the function of rings (marriage, personal monograms, official status and religious iconography); and the Western Gothic imitation and development of Byzantine prototypes. Examples from the early third and fourth centuries in Rome feature an elaborate ‘key’ ring, pierced with the words utere felix (use with luck) and an ornate yet sophisticated band set entirely with emeralds.

Paris 1901

$50.00 • 144 pages • 90 color illustrations • 2013 • Paperback 9780900785429 Some of the finest views of Paris ever painted were produced by British artists working in watercolor in the early nineteenth century. With the ending of many years of war, first at the Peace of Amiens of 1802-03 and then after the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo, Paris was an irresistible attraction for thousands of British tourists, among whom were many painters. There was an unprecedented interest in views of the city, and artists, such as Girtin, Bonington, Turner and David Cox, responded to this enthusiasm with an extraordinary range of works, from simple pencil views to the most elaborate watercolors, some for sale and exhibition, but many also for engraving as illustrations in guides and souvenir publications. This catalog, accompanying a major exhibition at the Wallace Collection, discusses and illustrates more than sixty works by over twenty artists.

This fully illustrated catalog, with essays by leading and emerging scholars in the field of Picasso studies, tells the remarkable story of Pablo Picasso’s breakthrough year – 1901 – as an artist. It brings together an extraordinary group of paintings to explore his rapid artistic development during this single year, which launched his career and reputation in Paris. These major paintings will be reunited from public and private collections internationally, making the catalog a unique opportunity to experience Picasso’s very first masterpieces.

This publication will be a valuable resource for art historians as well as the general public, with little scholarship previously published in English about Zorn. The catalog features fifty of Zorn’s works, such as Omnibus I, for which Zorn won a prize at the 1892 Salon in Paris, and Ice Skater (1898), which has never before left Sweden, combining for the first time major pieces from American collections with those of Europe, such as Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence; the National museum, Stockholm; Zornmuseet, Mora; and Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Gothenberg.

He moves from the early history of the Eucharistic bread in the Orthodox Church to the role of the icon in: the life of the Church, the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke and the European painting of the 20th century. He is a leading authority on the study of the relationship between worship, Liturgy and art. Whether it is the cult of the Byzantine Emperor or the Eucharistic Liturgy, manifested in numismatics, illuminated manuscripts, icons, church lights - all witnesses of the creative forces of the Byzantine artist Galavaris’ interests are symbols, forms and their meaning. He investigates their contribution to worship and how they reveal the freedom and the mission of the artist in realizing the Unseen in everyday life.

In this period, Iran dominated the art of book painting in the Islamic world. The articles reprinted here examine various aspects of this, the golden age of Persian painting. They range from the period of Mongol rule, when the impact of Far Eastern themes and modes radically transformed the heritage bequeathed to Iran by Arab painting to the dawn of the modern era and the swansong of the classical style of Persian painting under the early Safavids. Other articles focus on the roots of book painting in the themes and styles developed in painted ceramics, on medieval Qur’anic calligraphy, on bookbinding and on the remarkably variations played on the hackneyed theme of the figural frontispiece by Arab painters.

The interior of each church is described in depth, on a chapelby-chapel basis, and includes stucco work, marble revetment, monuments, metal work, fresco and painted decorations and altarpieces. The book is intended as a reference and resource book.

Visible Spirit The Art of Gian Lorenzo Bernini Volume III: Bernini at St. Peter’s. The Pilgrimage. Irving Lavin $390.00 • 386 pages • 272 illustrations • 2013 • Hardback • 9781904597469 Bernini at St. Peter’s may be a unique case in history: a single artist in change of a grandiose monument in a continuous state of creativity under constantly changing patrons and a variety of projects, for nearly six decades. This book argues that a continuous thread of thought may be discerned underlying and connecting the vicissitudes of this spectacular display. From first to last, Bernini conceived of St. Peter’s as a pilgrimage church, a kind of pilgrimage of human life, and his own and of the believers who visited the basilica to worship and give testimony. The book is in large format and richly illustrated with 272 color illustrations. It represents a fitting tribute to the artist and his monument, St. Peter's Basilica.

New Aesthetic of the Protestant Reformation Victoria George $300.00 • 506 pages • 117 illustrations • 2013 • Hardback • 9781904597643 This book is a reconsideration of the practice of whitewashing church interiors during the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is the first detailed study of its kind, which challenges the view that whitewash was always only a ‘cheap coat of paint’. Victoria George pulls together several histories: of the color white from the biblical period to the present, and ideas about the color white in philosophy, theology, art, and architecture from antiquity to the present. She links them to case studies of the ways in which reformers Huldrych Zwingli and John Calvin thought about color in a careful analysis of the role of color-thinking in their theological writings. The social meanings embodied in the word, ‘whitewash’ as it entered the printed media in the 17th century is explored as part of a chapter on the history of whitewashing itself. The long-term symbolic and aesthetic implications of the practice of whitewashing are examined in the larger context of material culture; in terms of their value as a metaphor, for both the Reformed Protestant and the Catholic in opposition to them; and for the uses to which whitewash has been put over time.

The Psautier des Saint Louis manuscript, which is held in the National Library in Paris, holds an outstanding place even amongst an immensely rich array of codices. Manufactured for one of the most important rulers of the Middle Ages, the manuscript almost approaches the status of a relic. From a number of different sources, we know that Saint Louis IX prayed directly out of this Psautier, which was both artfully created and written for him. The Latin text of psalms is preceded by a magnificent cycle of pictures, with 78 full-page miniatures from the Old Testament and represents the highpoint of Gothic French Book Art.

The textbook of surgery written by the Arab physician Abu al-Qasim Khalaf Ibn Abbas azZahrawi stood for nearly 500 years as the leading handbook in this field of medicine. It constitutes the oldest and also most important link between Greek classical and late classical medicine and the European medicine of the high Middle Ages. In all, 68 miniatures form the decorative apparatus of this bibliophile manuscript, illustrating individual methods of medical treatment and instruments in all their details. Besides these miniatures, which might have been derived from Arab models, numerous gilded initials bear testimony to the flawless quality and great significance of the manuscript, both in medical history and in the history of art.

This monograph considers the painted frieze on the facade of Tomb II at Vergina (ca. 330-280 B.C.) as a visual document that offers vital evidence for the public self-stylings of Macedonian royalty in the era surrounding the reign of Alexander the Great. The hunting scene on the frieze reflects the construction of Macedonian royal identity through the appeal to specific and long-standing cultural traditions, which emerged, long before Alexanders reign, from a complex negotiation of claims to heroic and local dynastic pasts, regional ideals of kingship, and models of royal behavior provided by the East.

The New Griffon volume 12 seeks to highlight several discoveries in a variety of areas and time periods: Father Konstantinos Terzopoulos explores 16 manuscripts of Byzantine chant; Cristina Pallini dissects an early hand-drawn map of Smyrna; Massimo Pinto considers the works of the 19th-century forger Constantinos Simonidis; American School Director Jack Davis analyzes topographical drawings connected with the presence of the French in the Peloponnesus; Aliki Asvesta presents a wealth of information from the archive of cartographer Barbié du Bocage; Maria-Christina Chatziioannou explores the personal archive of Joannes Gennadius to paint a portrait of the Gennadeions founder; and Eleftheria Daleziou examines the archives of Ion Dragoumis, focusing on his exile on Corsica in the early 20th century.

The ancient art of Chinese painting has many good traditions, such as expressive use of lines, the adept use of ink, and majestic composition. Vast expanses of landscapes can be represented in a single painting scroll, which is rare in the paintings of other countries. Chinese painting is unique in reflecting the greatness and the extraordinariness of the Chinese nation. The realm reflected in Chinese paintings is very vast. Chinese painting represents not only what the artist sees, but also what he knows and thinks. It embodies great imaginative power.

Pan Tianshou 1897-1971, inheriting the traditional Chinese painting, was a socialist painter. It had been his goal and spiritual fountain to revitalize national spirit by carrying forward the national art. Compared to his predecessors, he showed more presence in the forefront of the cultural clashes and social reform, voicing his great support for Chinese painting.

Huang Zhou, modern Chinese artist, was originally named Liang Gantang. He was also known by the names of Liang Yezi, Miao Di, Liang Peng, and Liang Quan. Born in Lixian County, Hebei Province, he was apprenticed in his adolescence to artist Han Leran and Zhao Wangyun. Not only was Huang an artist of the people, he was also a social activist who made contributions to the preservation and promotion of national art and to the advancement of public art education. He cofounded the Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Painting and presided over the establishment of the Yan Huang Art Museum. His artistic practice and theory have exerted a significant influence on the development of contemporary art.

This richly illustrated volume offers a comprehensive view of the surviving monuments, many of which were created by famous artists such as Lucas Cranach the Younger or Sebastian Walther. The book contains a detailed essay on the development of the Lutheran sepulchral and memorial culture from the Reformation to the end of the 16th century. At the same time these essays provide insight into the manifold research focuses of the author which range from the art history of late antiquity and Byzantine art history to Protestant Iconography and the history of protestant church architecture from the sixteenth century until to the present day. This includes also reflections on the relationship between contemporary art and Christian faith and on protestant paramentics.

Genocide and Visual Culture at the New Millennium Axel Bangert / Libby Saxton Robert Gordon

Sara Gray $64.00 • 296 pages • 2009 • Paperback 9780718830847

$89.50 • 2013 • Hardback • 9781907975028 Recent representations of the Holocaust have increasingly required us to think beyond rigid demarcations of nation and history, medium and genre. Holocaust Intersections sets out to investigate the many points of conjunction between these categories in recent images of genocide. The book examines transnational constellations in Holocaust cinema and television in Europe, disclosing instances of border crossing and boundary troubling at levels of production, distribution and reception. It highlights intersections between film genres and the deployment of audiovisual Holocaust memory and testimony. Finally, the volume addresses connections between the Holocaust and other histories of genocide in the visual culture of the new millennium, engaging with the questions of transhistoricity and intercultural perspective.

The most comprehensive volume of its kind, Gray’s Dictionary of British Women Artists offers extensively-researched biographies of some of the most significant female contributors to British art. This volume makes a valuable contribution to the study of art history. It also provides readers with significant insight into a long-neglected aspect of history - the lives and achievements of women artists. Each entry provides key biographical information, as well as (where possible) commentary on the artist’s studies, lifestyle, travels and family. Entries also detail significant works, exhibitions and membership of societies. Gray’s introduction provides a useful context to the biographies.

$20.00 • 80 pages • Illustrated • 2012 Paperback • 9781846743047

$70.00 • 435 pages • 2012 • Paperback 9781905739448 The portico was a defining feature of the Classical architectural revival of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century in Britain, but has been rarely studied in its own right. In this well-illustrated volume Richard Riddell first provides a definition for the portico, then explores its symbolism and significance. He selects representative examples of different portico types, relating them to stylistic developments and influential models. The work also addresses and interprets the different civic, ecclesiastical, commercial and domestic contexts in which the portico is to be found.

The Gothic revival began in the early years of Victoria’s reign. It quickly became the dominant form of building. New and exciting, it reflected Britain’s growing stature and a confidence in the country’s past. The Gothic style was striking and distinctive, with pointed arches, tall towers, steep roofs, and colorful patterns of tile and brick. Interiors featured staircases of rich wood, colored marble columns and painted ceilings. In recent years its romance has found renewed favor with the public. Trevor Yorke describes the importance of this period of architecture and shares the joy of its exuberance.

Their leader, Peter (Joe) Chamberlin, died young and little of their archive survives. But detective work has revealed a complex story about three determined characters and a surprising variety of fascinating architecture. The book is illustrated with images from CPB’s rediscovered archive and specially commissioned color photography by James O. Davies, and is an essential read for architects, students, architectural historians and anyone who is interested in learning more about a key practice in British post-war architecture.

The work of Madin and his associates had a profound influence on the reshaping of the city after the war. Trained in the modernist style, his work is characterized by attention to detail, a preference for natural materials and a desire for decoration and art in his buildings. Many have characterized Madin as a commercial architect, but as the author argues, there was another side to his work. His public service commissions, and his design and layout of housing schemes that are still lived-in and popular today, testify to his commitment to human values.

He came to prominence at the Festival of Britain and went on to be one of the leading British architects of the 1960s. Timothy Brittain-Catlin, architect and architectural historian at the University of Kent, describes how the work of Leonard Manasseh and Partners expresses one of the central themes of the 1950s and 1960s - the apparent conflict between the architect as creative artist, and as rational technologist and scientist. Leonard Manasseh and his partner, Ian Baker, were lauded for producing modernist designs that were in keeping with their historical settings or landscapes.

Twentieth Century Architects

Stephen Dykes Bower was unique among twentieth century British architects as a sincere practitioner of Gothic design. He rejected modernism and continued traditions from the late Victorian period, with an emphasis on fine detail and bright color. Although Dykes Bower seemed at odds with most of his contemporaries, the current trend for ‘New Ornamentalism’ in architecture gives his work a particular relevance and the book reveals his skill in design and composition in space.

Architect of the Picturesque Geoffrey Tyack $120.00 • 250 pages • 90 illustrations • 2013 • Hardback 9781848021020 John Nash is universally recognized as one of the most important architects of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. As the man responsible for the creation of Regent Street and Regent’s Park, he left an indelible mark on the West End of London, and his two most famous buildings - the Brighton Pavilion and Buckingham Palace - are crucial to any understanding of the monarchy in the age of the Prince Regent (later George IV).

Geoff Brandwood

One of England’s greatest Victorian architectural practices was based in the relatively quiet town of Lancaster. For just over a century, the leading practice in the area was that of Sharpe, Paley and Austin. It was founded by the multi-talented Edmund Sharpe. E.G. Paley developed the practice and took on the man who elevated it to greatness Hubert Austin, described as an architect of genius by Pevsner.

The architect-engineer Wells Wintemute Coates numbers amongst the most significant figures in 20th-century British architecture. Through projects such as the Lawn Road Flats of 1934; the Sunspan Houses of the mid-1930s; Palace Gate Flats, 1939 and the Telekinema for the Festival of Britain, 1951, he is recognized as one of those who brought about the introduction and development of architectural modernism in the UK.

Kenwood, London’s favorite ‘country house’ holds the Iveagh Bequest and this book discusses each work, revealing the personalities behind the faces in the portraits, the social circumstances of each commission, and the way that art met the ambitions of artists, patrons, sitters and collectors. Two introductory essays provide context for the house and discuss the ways in which Lord Iveagh was a pioneer collector.

Religious Architecture in Syria, Ludaea/Palaestina and Provincia Arabia

The Manoel Theatre is the only theater building still regularly used in Malta that dates back to when Malta was ruled by the Order of St John. It was founded by Antonio Manoel de Vilhena in 1732 and was used regularly by the Knights for their amateur performances of plays and even operas. Although meant for the honest entertainment of the public, the young Knights dominated it either as performers or as members of the audience. The passing of Malta to Britain meant that the theater, now known as Theatre Royal, remained of importance to the substantial British, but the rise of an educated Maltese middle class also meant that talented Maltese amateurs produced productions in Maltese.

Religious architecture gave faithful expression to the complexity of the Roman East and to its multiplicity of traditions pertaining to ethnic and religious aspects as well as to the powerful influence of Imperial Rome. The source of this power lay in the uniformity of the architectural language, the inventory of forms, the choice of styles and the spatial layout of the buildings

John Steane James Ayres

$90.00 • over 500 color and b/w illustrations 2013 • Hardback • 9781842174791 The pivotal position of the Oxford region in the geological and therefore building history of England is of fundamental importance to the study of traditional construction. Oxford occupies a central position on the ancient route between Northampton and Southampton and on the east - west road between London, The West Country, Wales and Ireland. For this reason, unusually for vernacular architecture, the buildings of the region were subject to a wide range of influences. This book, the fruit of twenty years research provides an account of vernacular architecture in the Oxford region from Anglo-Saxon times to the 19th century.

A Walk in the City Sue Finniss John Elliott

Peter L. Smith $60.00 • 224 pages • 21 color and 96 b/w images • 224 • Hardback 9781904965411 One of the least known yet most important buildings in Salisbury is the former Bishops’ Palace. First built when the city was established in the 1220s, it was home to successive bishops for over 700 years until becoming the Cathedral School in 1946. This book traces the evolution of the palace, chronicles the most important bishops who lived there and sets the story within the relevant contexts of English history. It also describes the other (numerous) palaces of the bishops of Salisbury and catalogues the portraits that have hung in the Salisbury Palace.

$46.00 • 96 pages • 44 color illustrations • 2012 Hardback • 9781904965398 Chichester is a major cathedral city which has also managed to retain a very rich architectural heritage with an important cathedral building, architecturally important buildings in the Close and equally important structures in the city. This book attempts to capture the spirit of this heritage by mixing the visual with the descriptive: mixing pictures and words to describe one of the major UK cathedral cities. Sue Finniss is a watercolor artist of some distinction. Her style is precise and descriptive. John Elliott is an architectural historian and publisher. This book is a fusion of these talents

The Institute of British Architects was established in 1834 with the published aim of establishing uniformity in the profession, yet, for the each of the eight architects included in this book, architectural practice involved a different set of principles and activities. Together they provide a revealing picture of the profession in this seminal period of its development.

The stylistic shift during the nineteenth century, which saw the Classical tradition challenged by a renewed interest in Gothic, was one of the century’s most profound architectural developments. It was the result of a range of influences, but ultimately the Gothic Revival was the product of a series of groundbreaking architects. This book identifies six of the individuals whose careers span the late-Georgian and Victorian periods, and who made a major contribution to the foundations, development or refinement of the style.

Contrasts and True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture

‘Gothic For Ever’ A.W.N. Pugin, Lord Shrewsbury, and the Rebuilding of Catholic England

The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England

A.W.N Pugin $90.00 • 244 pages • b/w illustrations • 2012 Hardback • 9781904965374 Contrasts and The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture are the two key texts of the Gothic Revival. The young architect and designer A.W.N. Pugin completed his original edition of Contrasts in 1836 shortly after hearing that the scheme he had drawn up for Charles Barry had won the competition for the design of the new Houses of Parliament. At the time he was known mainly as a prodigy, a brilliant designer and draughtsman of Gothic architecture and ornament, but the publication of his book quickly transformed him into the figurehead of the Revival.

A.W.N. Pugin was the foremost propagandist of the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival, whose aim was the restoration of the ancient splendors of the Catholic Church. Turning this vision into reality required a wealthy and influential patron, and Pugin found one in John Talbot, sixteenth earl of Shrewsbury and England’s leading Catholic layman. Impressed by Pugin’s talent and enthusiasm, and by his devotion to the Church, Lord Shrewsbury provided Pugin with the means and the opportunities he needed, in and around his ancestral Staffordshire estate - Alton Towers. The Pugin/Shrewsbury partnership was arguably the most successful and creative of its kind in Victorian Britain.

Pugin’s writings and buildings changed the course of British architecture. The Present State, published in 1843, is significant in marking the transition from Pugin the Gothic propagandist and polemicist to Pugin the working architect and designer who can now show actual examples of his own buildings. In this book, he espouses Gothic of the early fourteenth century as the pinnacle of architectural excellence. Having lamented the existing state of church architecture, Pugin proceeds to describe in some detail, and with reference to his own buildings, the essentials of a properly designed and appointed Catholic parish.

The Mirror of Great Britain

The Glossary of Ecclesiastical Ornament and Costume

National Identity in SeventeenthCentury British Architecture

A.W.N Pugin

Olivia Horsfall Turner $70.00 • 283 pages • 108 b/w illustrations 2012 • Hardback • 9781904965381 In studies of seventeenth-century British architecture, Britain has often been a synonym for England, yet the geographical and political reality was far more complex. Here, emerging and established scholars examine the multi-faceted national identity of architecture across the British archipelago and the Atlantic world. They examine how different architectural forms and features were employed to express political and social realities and aspirations. Ten rich and varied essays encompass Sir James Murray, the Kings Master of Works in Scotland.

$140.00 • 350 pages • 73 illustrations • 2012 Hardback • 9781904965428 The Glossary is Pugin’s largest and most magnificent book. He intended that his two Dublin Review articles of 1842 would be accompanied by a third dealing with ornament and decoration. However, this developed into grand survey church ornaments, vessels and vestments that are dealt with alphabetically, including long-forgotten ones he hoped to revive. This masterly survey reveals the extraordinary breadth and depth of Pugin’s researches. The edition reproduced is that of 1846, revised and enlarged by the Rev. Bernard Smith. To Michael Fisher, author of the acclaimed ‘Gothic Forever’, has added it an insightful introduction: A.W.N. Pugin, Lord Shrewsbury and the Rebuilding of Catholic England.
