About CASE We believe education improves lives and societies. To strengthen schools, colleges, universities and cultural bodies, we provide knowledge, standards, advocacy and training to the professions of alumni relations, fundraising, marketing, communications and related areas.

It is through the work and success of the professionals in these teams that schools, colleges, universities and cultural bodies advance to their next phase of development and are able to improve more lives and further enrich society.

Members of CASE are part of a global network comprising of 3,600 educational bodies and 80,000+ professionals. In Europe, CASE represents more than 400 institutional members and a network of more than 8,500+ professionals.

The Alumni Relations Institute is part of the educational programme offered by CASE for professionals working in alumni relations, careers and volunteer management. The Institute offers three days of intense learning, networking opportunities and valuable advice designed to motivate, enthuse and inspire. The Institute is a great way to develop core skills as well as an opportunity to discover, debate and deliver on new ideas within education.

Course content The Alumni Relations Institute meets the needs of early career professionals and those new to working with alumni and friends within a school, college, university, arts or cultural sector environment.

Attendees benefit from the professional knowledge of the Institute tutors as well as the opportunity to discover, debate and deliver on new ideas.

In addition to tutorials and elective sessions, the Institute includes five sessions delivered by the Institute’s tutors, all experts in alumni relations, development and external affairs.*

Start up and strategy Alumni relations professionals are facing increased expectations to deliver high impact alumni programmes that support their institution’s goals, while remaining relevant to the alumni audience, and responsive to changing attitudes and external pressures. This session provides attendees with ten guiding principles that will help them shape their future planning, regardless of the size of their operation.

This session is delivered by Nathalie Walker, Director of External Affairs, Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK, and Nik Miller, Director, The Bridge Group.

Alumni communications Effective communication is the basis for engaging your alumni. Discover the current channels and emerging technologies that will shape the landscape of alumni communications.

Like a good recipe, alumni engagement relies on a few key ingredients to be successful. Tap into the science behind the art of engaging alumni using insights from a three year research study conducted at the University of Waterloo and the University of Guelph. The study led to a conceptual model that can be used by any institution as a guide to effectively engage alumni and ensure resources are allocated effectively.

This session is delivered by Jason Coolman, Associate Vice-President, Development, University of Waterloo, Canada.

Volunteer management Discover the ten pitfalls of recruiting, managing and stewarding alumni volunteers. The Institute tutors will provide tips for managing difficult volunteers as well as designing effective volunteer programmes.

Speakers Nathalie Walker

Ian Moore

Director of External Affairs Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK

Head of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Queen’s University Belfast, UK

Nathalie Walker has been director of external affairs at Cambridge Judge Business School since January 2013. The role encompasses all key externally facing activities for the Business School including alumni relations, fundraising, marketing, events, press and public relations and corporate relations. Prior to joining Cambridge Judge, Nathalie was head of alumni relations for the University of Cambridge where she created, developed and implemented a strategy to educate and engage the University’s 210,000 graduates living in more than 180 countries as advocates and ambassadors.

Karen Brady Director of Philanthropy and Alumni Relations University of Liverpool, UK Karen Brady joined the University of Liverpool as alumni development manager in 2006, becoming head of alumni relations in 2008. During her time at Liverpool, she has overseen the launch of several new initiatives, including a successful overseas alumni ambassador programme and the re-launch of the University’s annual giving campaign. Karen is now director of philanthropy and alumni relations, responsible for the overall strategic direction of fundraising and alumni relations across the institution.

Jason Coolman

Associate Vice-President, Development University of Waterloo, Canada After working as residence manager at the University of Guelph, and as MPP liaison for the Canadian minister of citizenship, culture and recreation, Jason joined the University of Waterloo as residence life coordinator in 1999. In 2000 as Waterloo embarked on a $600+ million campaign, Jason joined the University’s Office of Development. He became Associate Vice-President, Alumni Relations in 2013.

Ian Moore has worked in alumni relations higher education since 2001 and is currently the Head of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving at Queen’s University Belfast. As well as engaging and entertaining the University’s alumni he has responsibility for securing more than £200k for the University every year from donors giving between £5 and £500.

Nik Miller Director The Bridge Group, UK Nik Miller is Director of the Bridge Group, an educational policy association based in Westminster, London, and a consultant specialising in external relations, including alumni engagement, fundraising, social mobility and corporate engagement. Nik was previously head of corporate relations and alumni engagement at the University of York and Senior programme manager at the University of Warwick.

Nik’s recent consultancy clients include Cass Business School, Barcelona School of Management, KPMG, Birkbeck University of London and the Higher Education Academy. He is an associate partner at More Partnership.

Sandra Rincon

Director of International Alumni Relations Tilburg University, the Netherlands Sandra Rincon is Director of International Alumni Relations at Tilburg University. Sandra has more than 20 years’ experience in international education including bilingual education, language acquisition and curriculum development of international programmes (dual degrees, Erasmus Mundus and Atlantis). She has taught languages and intercultural communication in USA, Colombia, Spain and the Netherlands.
