Chief Executive Officer’s Report Dear Case Alumni/ae and Friends: This Annual Report is dedicated to those who made a gift to the Case Fund® and other gifts in support of the Case School of Engineering during fiscal 2010-11. We send our appreciation to each and every one of you for your generous support. I want to thank the officers and directors of the Case Alumni Council, the governing Board of the Case Alumni Association, for their support and leadership during 2010-11. Under the leadership of Kenneth L. Loparo PhD ’77, much has been accomplished. Our return to campus in Tomlinson Hall has been important to our ability to support students, faculty and alumni. And, our partnership with University offices has improved with positive results. We also thank everyone who attended one of our events this past year as well as those who volunteered your time to contact classmates on behalf of the Case Fund. Alumni participation was up due to your efforts. Finally, I want to express our appreciation to Norman Tien for his leadership and support to the Case Alumni Association over the past five-plus years. We wish you well in your future ventures. And we welcome Jeff Duerk as the new dean and look forward to working with him to advance the school. Going forward, the Case Alumni Association will continue to serve you and the students and faculty of the Case School of Engineering with renewed zeal and enthusiasm. The Case Alumni Association completed its 126th year of continuous operation with a number of giving highlights: • Th e Case Alumni Association received cash and pledges during 2010-11 (including will commitments) of $9,101,714 compared to $4,185,329 the previous year. • Th e total cash attainment was $2,275,714 from 3,004 donors compared to $1,496,136 from 2,614 donors a year ago. • Annual giving for the Case School of Engineering was $1,100,346 with a donor increase of 16%. • Alumni participation rose to 22% from 18% both for the Case Fund® and University. • Membership in the Case Dean’s Society increased 19% to 321 members. This past year was also highlighted by the following events: • Th e successful search for a new Executive Director, Steven J. Zinram, who started on September 1, 2011. Our thank you to David Hunt ’63, chairman of the Search Committee, and members Ken Loparo PhD’77, Tom Kicher ’59, Ed McHenry ’67, Harry Farmer ’55 and Daniel Ducoff for their time and effort. • Th e successful transition of the CAA Annual All-Classes Reunion from spring to October and held for the first time during the University’s Alumni Weekend. Read more about the Reunion in this magazine. • A record number of nominations for our Junior/Senior Scholarship program resulting in $878,150 awarded to 226 students for 2011-12. • C ase Club events were held in Columbus, Washington D.C., Boston, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, and Jupiter, Sarasota and Naples, Florida. • S tudent events included Freshman Welcome and CSE Senior Reception, and sponsorship of numerous student organizations such as those listed in the Your Dollars at Work section of this magazine. • Th e Case alumnus magazine continued to be recognized as one of the best in Cleveland-area communications societies. • Th e coordination of activities with the school and University continued to be strengthened with positive and collaborative results.

The Case Alumni Association provided $1,906,743 in support to Case Western Reserve University for the benefit of the Case School of Engineering, the Math and Sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences, and other University programs.
Investment performance for the Endowment Funds at the Case Alumni Foundation were up 18.73% for Fiscal 2010-11 ending June 30, 2011. The Investment Committee, chaired by Phillip W. Gutmann ’54, did an outstanding job in stewardship and fiduciary responsibility. Total Foundation funds as of June 30, 2011, were $51,438,227.

Case Dean’s Society® Recognizing the pace-setting commitment by alumni and friends providing Case Fund® leadership gifts of $1,000 or more. The Case Dean’s Society was founded in July 1992, to celebrate the establishment of the Case School of Engineering to carry on the legacies and traditions of the Case Institute of Technology. Each level of the Case Dean’s Society recognizes the founder and presidents of Case since the institutions founding in 1880. Annual leadership gifts to the Case Fund, Case Dean’s Society, extend the promise of a Case education to the next generation of leaders by providing funds that can be invested in scholarships, faculty, new technology and vital laboratories and equipment. “I went to a very good high school, but during my years there, I never really felt challenged. I found high school to be pretty easy . . . a situation that most Case freshmen probably experience. As a result, I found Case to be exceedingly difficult. It certainly challenged me as I had never been challenged before. My four years at Case developed within me a study/work ethic that has helped me to be successful in my career as a metallurgical engineer, and then an engineering manager, in a major aerospace corporation. When I attended Case, my family considered Case to be rather expensive. And, during the last 40 years it has become even more expensive. The education that I received at Case, along with the work ethic that Case helped me to develop, has allowed for Claudia and me to live a relatively prosperous life style, and has afforded us a financial situation that allows us now, in our retirement, to give financial gifts to Case that will hopefully enable talented young people to attend Case even if their families do not possess significant financial resources. Attending Case in the 1960s was one of the best opportunities I had to develop my work ethics. Case Dean’s Society Recognition Dinner Harry Farmer ’55, G’65, president of the Case Alumni Association, along with Dean Norman Tien and Dean Cyrus Taylor, hosted members of our Case Dean’s Society® at the annual recognition dinner on September 15, 2011. Many alumni and friends of the Case Alumni Association and Case School of Engineering enjoyed an evening learning from engineering students the direct impact of your gifts to the Case Fund®. Case Alumni Association scholarship recipients discussed the positive influence their scholarships have on their collegiate experience. “The Case Alumni Association has played a huge role in all of my successes at Case. Being solely responsible for my college education, living and eating expenses, car and most other financial needs, the CAA has lifted the financial burden a great deal, and I am able to focus on my academics as well as enjoying college life. In other words, the CAA gave me a chance to be a college student. Because of this, I want to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity.” – Jessica Lanzo, Aerospace Engineering Student Jessica is currently on Co-op at Swagelok and will graduate in December 2012 with her degree.
