What Is ACLS?

While Basic Life Support includes CPR and is often a requirement for healthcare professionals, an ACLS certification is not always required. Instead, it gives you skills and knowledge beyond BLS strategies and may be required to advance your career. For example, you will need to take an ACLS class before you are eligible to become a registered nurse working in the ICU, ER, or other specialty care environments. Many positions will also allow you up to six months from the time you’re hired to get your ACLS certification. As a result, you have some flexibility to determine the best certification option for you.

Do You Need ACLS?

Several healthcare professions require an ACLS certification. If you are a nurse or doctor in an emergency department, intensive care unit, hospital, you are likely required to take an ACLS course as part of your job. Additionally, first responders, such as paramedics, need this certification too. Your employer may already have an agreement with Cascade Training Solutions, meaning they can coordinate and cover the cost of your training. Be sure to check with your employer. Your ACLS certification is valid for two years, at which point you must get recertified. There is usually no grace period for recertification, so stay up-to-date on when you need to renew your certification. Otherwise, you may be suspended from your job if you do not get recertified in time.

Do You Need a BLS CPR Card?

The current American Heart Association guidelines do not require a BLS CPR card to take the Cascade Training Solutions ACLS course. Still, you need to be proficient in Adult BLS. You can expect your skills to be reviewed and evaluated as part of the course. BLS certification is not included in the ACLS class. If you aren’t confident in your BLS skills, Cascade Training Solutions offers a separate BLS course you can take before your ACLS certification. If you are taking the class as an individual and aren’t being sponsored by your employer, you may have the option to purchase it as a connected class.

What Does the ACLS Course Entail?

The course is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course or blended learning course that will highlight the most current ACLS cardiac arrest treatment algorithms, systems of care, the importance of communication and team dynamics, ACS treatment, stroke care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest procedures. The class will also cover airway management and related pharmacology. Skills are taught in larger group sessions, while smaller group learning and testing stations use case-based scenarios.
