Journey to Memphis Competition Accepting 2019 Applications

T

he Journey To Memphis is the Cascade Blues Association’s regional competition to select the acts that will represent our organization and region at the 2020 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Up to 250 acts from around the world converge on Beale Street to perform before the music industry searching for new talent, with the chance to win recognition and prizes that include major festival performances and more. But the only way an act may participate is to win a regional competition held by one of The Blues Foundation’s affiliated societies like the Cascade Blues Association.

Journey to Memphis

The Journey To Memphis competition consists of two rounds. The opening round will be held this year on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11 at The East Portland Eagles Lodge. Acts are scored by a trio of judges selected for their backgrounds and knowledge of the blues. The highest scoring acts from each night of competition (up to four acts) will advance to the finals held at the Waterfront Blues Festival on July 4th.

Applications to participate in the competition will be accepted from now until Wednesday, April 3 at the Cascade Blues Association

All acts that meet our criteria as described below will be eligible to compete. The performance schedule for the competition is drawn at random.

Here’s what you need to do to enter: • Entry fee is $25.00 • Each act must have at least one person in the band who is a member of the Cascade Blues Association.

• Only acts located within Oregon or Washington states are allowed to enter the Journey To Memphis.

• Any act or member of an act that has been nominated for or received a Blues Music Awards from The Blues Foundation are ineligible to compete. No exceptions.

• Any act that has competed in the International Blues Challenge two consecutive years, regardless whether with the same society or as a solo/duo or band act, must sit out a year before being allowed to compete again. Acts can only

participate three times in Memphis (acts competing previous to 2017 will be grandfathered and may compete three times starting from 2017).

• Along with your $25.00 application fee, send an up-to-date band bio including names of all members, a 300 dpi photo of the band, full song samples of the band’s music (this may be used on a radio broadcast to promote the event), and we need to be made aware of any band member who may be under 21 years of age at the time of the competition so the venue is aware ahead of time for Oregon or Washington Liquor Commission laws.

• We require that any act that moves forward in the competition must use the same band members with whom they won previous rounds. In other words, if you won with a certain bass player or drummer at the Waterfront Blues Festival, that bassist and drummer must be in your band to compete in Memphis. Exceptions will made in rare circumstances, such as health issues.

• We do not prevent acts competing with the Cascade Blues Association from doing so with other societies. All that we ask is that if you win another group’s competition before ours is held, or if you win ours before theirs, please remove yourself from further competitions to allow other acts the chance to win the right to go to Memphis.

March General Membership Meeting Wednesday, March 6, 7pm

M

arch will find us again in our temporary home — The Mission Theater — for our monthly meetings. This is our next to last meeting here before we move in May into our permanent location at The East Eagles Lodge on Hawthorne. During our tenure at The Mission we wanted to showcase some of the most popular blues acts in our area and we’ve certainly succeeded doing so for our March meeting.

Mary Flower Opening our March meeting will be one of the world’s most recognized acoustic guitarists, Mary Flower. Mary is fluent in and master of the artistically

tricky Piedmont style of acoustic guitar, a genre that requires intricate picking and an innate sense of subtle harmonics. But Mary — who relocated from Denver to Portland, Oregon in 2004 — is equally rooted in Mississippi blues, especially on her vintage lap-slide. Stir in her love of swing, ragtime, folk, and hot jazz, plus a healthy dose of her own song craft, and you have a modern artist with an ear for the traditional who brings an immediate vibrancy and dynamism to any concert hall and stage performance.

Flower has received many richly deserved accolades; she’s a two-time National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship finalist, a three-time nominee for the Blues Music Awards, a 2009 winner of the coveted Vox Populi award in the Independent Music Award’s Acoustic Song category, and a multiple Muddy Awards, including induction into the Cascade Blues Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018 as acoustic guitarist. While the list seems endless, for Flower it’s not about the prizes and awards. Along with her teaching, it’s about making the music come alive onstage and in her recordings. She continues to compose, record, and tour

relentlessly, honing and evolving her style rooted in rich tradition but always moving America’s indigenous music forward.

Lisa Mann As we had for the February meeting with Lloyd Jones, I asked Lisa Mann if she wouldn’t mind performing at the March meeting. Like Lloyd, Lisa has put together a terrific collection of musicians you’re likely not going to see too often working together in this type of format.

Originally from West Virginia, Mann’s vocals effortlessly moves between a southern honey-sweet warmth and the forceof-nature hard rock and rhythm and blues Mann has cultivated during her career. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass guitar. A two-time Blues

Michael Osborn Joining Lisa on guitar will be one of the West Coast’s finest guitarist, Michael Osborn. Best known for holding the reigns as lead guitarist for John Lee Hooker’s band for thirteen years, he was also a member of the Charles Ford Band, Sista Monica’s band, and Bill Rhoades & The Party Kings with whom he was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association’s Hall of Fame. Osborn has received multiple Muddy Award nominations leading his own band in Portland,

three times for best electric guitarist and twice for Northwest Recording of the Year, including his latest Hangin’ On. Manning the drums will be Dave Melyan. Dave has worked in multiple bands from the region throughout his career, and toured the world as a member of The Insomniacs, with whom he received a Blues Music Award nomination. Currently he is working alongside Ben Rice in various combinations, but can also often be found joining artists like Karen Lovely and Lisa Mann on tours around the country. A perennial nominee for the Muddy Awards, Melyan is a true journeyman who can be found performing around the city somewhere almost any night of the week.

Obviously this is another one of our monthly meetings you won’t want to miss. April 3rd will be our last meeting at The Mission and it too will be one you’ll want to see as we will present Ellen Whyte & JeanPierre Garau and The Strange Tones.

Ramblings On My Mind

hree months into 2019 and the Cascade Blues Association is making strong moves toward our future and it’s all coming quickly. We had envisioned a lot of these changes for some time, but they are all set to become reality in a short amount of time.

Need for a new home As everybody knows, we have been seeking a permanent home for the monthly meetings.

We enjoyed our run at Catfish Lou’s, but were looking for larger space and an all ages welcome location. We thought that The Mission Theater was going to be the spot we wanted and had made the switch under the impression that it would go on for at least a year. But they decided to change their movie format to first-run features starting in May, so we were once again looking for a home. Thank you, Terry Currier, for setting us up with The Mission and speaking with McMenamins for other potential rooms that were great spots, but

We asked around and talked to a handful of other venues, but it was starting to look a little bleak.

The Eagle has landed!

One of the spaces we had discussed was The Eagles Lodge at 50th & Hawthorne. We liked the location, the size, stage & dance floor, parking accommodations and the fact that they have a history of holding successful music events. Board members Merry Larsen, Jamey Winchester and myself made a visit to the room to check things out and knew it was exactly what we were

The journey begins Having secured the room as our new home, we also came in agreement to hold our Journey to Memphis competition in the room. This year’s event will take place on Friday, May 10 & Saturday, May 11.

Blues Notes in full color We are excited to announce that after moving our Blues Notes production this past summer to our editor Michael Wong at Cedar House Media in Beaverton, our vision for the new look paper is going forward starting in May. We will have a slightly larger paper and it will be in full color! And we are looking to create a much friendlier periodical for our musicians and venues, offering a resource page that will include contact information for those looking to hire acts or where to find their websites. This service will be offered to those

acts that are CBA members free.

Breathing new life into old programs We are pushing ahead on kick-starting some of our old programs that haven’t had much attention the past few years, more due to board size and burnout from each of us trying to do too much. We are looking for volunteers to join some of these committees to get them up and running again. Included will be such important programs as our Christopher Mesi Scholarship and our Musicians Relief Fund – we are already looking at putting together a fundraiser show for the MRF so keep posted on upcoming information.

We are all in this together As you may have noticed in our recent issues of the paper we have been including articles about the local blues dance groups. This is a new collaboration that the CBA and these groups have been moving forward on to not only bridge our like loves for the music, but to potentially bring new members for all of us and opening doors to welcome all ages of blues supporters. There are several

groups that we want to recognize for their efforts of keeping blues music vital in our area, including people like PortlandBlues.com, Portland Blues & Jazz, Portland Blues Experience, Camp Blues and others. We’re all here for the same thing and it will only make us all stronger to work with one another.

Are you excited? We are!

It is all so exciting and our path is moving in nothing but a positive direction. We hope that these new changes will excite you as well. If you want to get involved, let us know, we can always use extra hands in promoting and supporting the blues.

Tom May has been a professional traveling singer/songwriter for more than forty-five years, and has shared the stage with Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Alabama, and Willie Nelson. He has released fourteen albums, produced the national public radio broadcast River City Folk for over thirty-five years, and founded and continues to produce Portlands largest annual folk music event, Winterfolk, a benefit for our areas struggling homeless population.

Doug Smith is an internationally renowned finger-style guitarist, performer, and clinician.

He is a winner of the prestigious Winfield, Kansas, guitar competition, has been featured in the Hollywood production of the movie August Rush and shares a Grammy Award for his work on The Songs of Henry Mancini.”

He has performed and taught in Japan, China, and throughout the U.S. Tom and Doug have enjoyed sharing a repertoire they both love of original songs and some instrumentals. This fun presentation features solo performances by each of them, but more than half of the concert in an exciting duo format.

magazine, New Times. A few years later he toured as guitarist in blues legend Junior Wells’ band. Then, following Wells’ death, Castiglia enjoyed a stint with Atlanta vocalist Sandra Hall. For a minor talent with less momentum, that role as sideman and gun-for-hire might have been enough, but right from the start Albert had a creative itch that only a solo career and a songwriting carte blanche could scratch. His solo career began with 2002’s Burn, followed by a handful of well-received recordings afterward. Each new release was a step up, hammering home Albert’s reputation and ensuring there was plenty of classy material to fuel his increasingly well-attended live shows, which he describes as “balls to the wall, rockin’ blues show.”

There will be a raffle and a percentage of the bar will also be donated for the cause. Tuareg Guitar Master Bombino Back in Portland

Jimmie Vaughan Trio Benton County Reli, Single Lock Records (by Randy Murphy) he word “relic” holds many meanings — it’s a thing that stays behind once the original is lost, or what remains of the possessions of saint. It’s also something cherished, worshipped even, for its ability to reach into the past and recreate a different era. In short, relics are both timely and timeless.

In his new, Grammy-nominated album, Benton County Relic, Cedric Burnside’s touches on all of these different meanings to explore and maintain the traditions of Mississippi Hill Country Blues while investigating the possibilities of the genre. Like all effective relics, Burnside’s latest offering first looks back to its foundations and then forward to its promises. It’s heady stuff, dangerous and reassuring in equal measure.

By now, most folks know that Cedric Burnside was born into blues royalty. The grandson of R.L. Burnside, he is steeped in the music of legends — Junior Kimbrough, “Mississippi” Fred McDowell, Robert Belfour, Otha Turner — and all of these influences find their way into this recording. But this album is much more than merely a roll call of riffs; Cedric Burnside is his own man, and he puts a unique spin on his musical inheritance.

All the songs here are worthy of praise; there’s not a clunker in the bunch. Two do stand out for me though. First, the hushed “There Is So Much” that showcases Burnside’s songwriting skills and expressive, soulful voice. It’s a quiet seduction of a tune.

But as tender as “There Is So Much” is, “Death Bell Blues” is a throwback, a true artifact of the rough-hewed, earthy music of his grandfather’s generation with Cedric’s drums hammering out a slow, merciless cadence as death prepares, as Papa and Mama tells him, to one day to come for him - and us.

The appeal of Mississippi Hill Country Blues, for me anyway, lies in ability to hold many textures and musical colors within its historic traditions. And Burnside’s new album, like any relic worth its salt, offers convincing confirmation of that fact.

Live In London, Anti-Records (by Greg Johnson) hen it comes to soul and gospel vocalists, does it get any better than Mavis Staples?

It would be pretty tough to come up with anybody with as fine a resume. Mavis has worked professionally for seventy years, since before she was ten years old, and alongside her family in the Staple Singers, she was the voice of civil rights and social injustices, delivering a peaceful, non-threatening message of hope and redemption.

Mavis has released four albums over the past decade, working with a plethora of talented songwriters. Focusing on those numbers for the most part on her first live recording in ten years, she still shows that she has a lot to say politically and spreading the voice of love.

Backed by an all-star outfit that is led by guitarist Rick Holmstrom and includes drummer Stephen Hodges and bass player Jeff Turmes, with vocalists Donny Gerard and vicki Randle, Mavis and the group present songs written by the likes of Ben Harper, Benjamin Booker, Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, George Clinton, Curtis Mayfield, and The Talking Heads. And not to leave her early days out of the mix, there is a Pops Staples number, too (“What You Gonna Do”).

Many of these songs fit directly into the current atmosphere of our times. “Slippery People” had been previously covered by The Staple Singers back in 1984, but it can easily depict the type of politics running our country now. There is no mistaking the theme she visualizes in “No Time For Cryin’” that she co-wrote with Tweedy, speaking about motherless children who have been removed from their families as refugees. The selections clearly define her social stances, but through it all she brings the end of the show with a light of hope with Little Milton’s “We’re Gonna Make It” and another Staple Singers piece “Touch A Hand (Make A Friend).”

Recorded over two nights in London at Union Chapel, this is a firm notice that Mavis Staples still can command a performance and she is not shying away from her social stances as she has done for seven decades.

At 79 years, she is still the leader of that human march because she wants every one to know that “You Are Not Alone.”

Live at C-Boy’s, Last Music Company (by Greg Johnson) f you’re ever in Austin and checking out the music scene (what else would you be there for, right? Okay barbecue, too), head over to the South Congress and just a few blocks away from the famous Continental Club you’ll find another one of the city’s not to miss venues, C-Boy’s Heart & Soul. Just looking at their calendar you’re going to see names on a regular basis like Paul Oscher, Rosie Flores, Miss Lavelle White, and quite often the weekends will be featuring the Jimmie Vaughan Trio with Mike Flanigin on keys (usually on their calendar you’re going to see it listed as the Mike Flanigin Trio featuring Jimmie Vaughan). It’s a bare-boned trio that lays down some of the smoothest grooves going and lucky for any us Jimmie Vaughan fan they’ve released this musthave recording, Live at C-Boy’s.

Nowadays when the group appears you’re going to see renowned drummer George Rains filling out the group. But he only recently took on the spot following the death of Barry “Frosty” Smith shortly after the tracks to this album were recorded. Smith was a powerful drummer as seen here rounding out the magical B-3 work by Flanigin and Vaughan’s always tasteful guitar runs.

It’s a little bit jazzy, it’s a little bit bluesy, but man does this disc swing with great music.

Opening with The Dovell’s classic “You Can’t Sit Down” and rolling through to the ending take of Junior Walker’s “Cleo’s Mood,” it is one fantastic turn after another, never letting up with the intensity or the perfection. The next best thing to sitting in the small club with this trio is found right here. The only complaint on my part, it’s too short. I wish it could go on and on, but I going to relish in what it has, over and over again.

Rich Layton and Tough Town

Salvation Road, Never Lucky Records (by Greg Johnson) ich Layton, a first-hand veteran of the Houston Gulf Coast scene has been plying that same authentic sound in the Portland area for many years. Layton’s a sly songwriter who just happens to be a powerful harmonica player, vocalist, and strong live front man. Salvation Road is his first release since the 2011 Tough Town album, with eleven jumping tracks, all but one of which Layton had his hand in composing.

His band features a trio of exceptional musicians, with Larry McCoy absolutely sizzling on guitar, Eric “Haus” Krabbenhoft offering bass beats as big as his nickname, and Charles Pike driving the bunch with heart-racing chops and shuffles. Add into the mix unbelievable guests including Teresa James, Jon Koonce, Chris Mercer and Terry Wilson and you’ve got the makings of what will certainly be hailed as one of the best party discs of 2019.

I really love the turn of phrases throughout the selections. They can be quirky and clever, and will

make you smile more than once. In “Sorry Don’t Cut It” he describes that there’s a politician crying on the evening news, there’s crocodile tears on his alligator shoes. Or in “Dollars To Donuts” he’ll bet you dollars to donuts that she gets what she wants and leaves you only the crumbs. Great visualization and imagery for sure. And there’s a lot of philosophy behind the words too, as in “Show Me What You’re Working With”: Love is the hardest job two people will ever do, but if you have the right tools baby, I’m ready to work with you, so show me what you’re working with.

For long time fans the inclusion of the popular “The Dude Abides” has finally made it to disc. The only cover song on the album is the closing number from Gerry Goffin and Carole King, best known by the recording by Taj Mahal, “Take A Giant Step.”

The band knows how deliver this song exactly as it should sound and it is the perfect way to close the album.

Salvation Road is well worth the eight year wait. Filled full of swampy good times and follows directly by Rich’s words that he will live to rock another day.
