Concerto for Oboe and Strings was commissioned by Martin Verdrager and Rudolph Vrbsky. It was written for oboists Laura Griffiths and Rudolph Vrbsky and premiered (in its sextet version) on January 23, 1997 at the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. by Mr. Vrbsky and members of the National Symphony Orchestra.
The Concerto may be performed with one player per part, or with a string orchestra. In the event that a string orchestra is used, the composer recommends a minimum number of players, 44432. More may be used, maintaining a reasonable balance between the soloist and string orchestra. The Concerto may also be done with a soprano saxophone instead of oboe. An alternate part in B-flat is included.
The orchestra version is available on rental.
