WIRLING VIBRANT COLORS INTO ABSTRACT INTERPRETATIONS of plant and human forms, local artist Wanda Venturelli’s passion for the world around her shines through her art. A Santa Barbara resident for over 35 years, Venturelli has consistently supported the local community through her art. Now, her painting Rain of Blooms has been announced as the winner of the Summer Solstice 2021 Poster & T-shirt Contest, and will adorn the festival’s merchandise.

“I really was hoping that folks after two years of a virtual parade would have an opportunity to realize that Summer Solstice is still exploding with excitement and energy,” said Venturelli.

After originally studying fine arts, Venturelli turned to architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and going on to work with a number of local architects.

Throughout her time there, she continued to create fine art, using her skills Wanda Venturelli to support local organizations such as Kids Draw Architecture, Montessori Center School, State Street Ballet Young Dancers, and the Santa 2021 Summer Solstice Poster. Predominantly employing oils, watercolors, and inks, Venturelli has also worked with kilnformed glass.

Her Summer Solstice featured work, Rain of Blooms, is a 35” by 52” oil painting that uses strong primary colors to depict a blooming flower against an abstractly verdant background. Inspired by our current time of renewal and the Summer Solstice 2021 theme, Bloom, the piece is a celebration of life and its inherent joy.

“The ability for things to grow and change, and for people to grow and change, and that interaction between plant and human is, I think, the most interesting thing, and it constantly compels me to pick up a paintbrush or a pencil to create something,” shared Venturelli.

Engaging Summer At the Solstice Festivities

C

ALLING THE COMMUNITY TO CREATE, Summer Solstice has offered an invitation to join the celebration and Solstice artists by putting together "Blooming Gardens" of popup art installations on front lawns, store fronts, and notable locations around town. It all will be a part of myriad festivities, including an inflatable garden, with works from the iconic, long time Solstice Artist, Pali X-Mano.

The Summer Solstice Celebration Virtual Community Parade will be released on the Solstice YouTube Channel on June 27th. It will include the Virtual State Street parade as well as all community video and photo submissions. (It’s not too late to participate!)

In collaboration with TVSB, the team will produce an hour-long segment, Summer Solstice Celebration Virtual State Street Parade, to be filmed at the Community Arts Workshop and broadcast on cable TV around June 27th. Find out more at www.solsticeparade.com.

The Arlington Theatre to Celebrate

ITH ITS SIGNATURE ANTIQUE MARQUEE, INTRICATE MURALS, AND UNIQUE VILLA-STYLED INTERIOR, the Arlington Theatre is one of the Santa Barbara community’s most beloved landmarks. Now, after having closed its doors amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Arlington will welcome moviegoers back with its 90th Anniversary Celebration from May 21st through the 23rd. Consisting of a special organ performance, film screenings, and free popcorn, the event invites locals to enjoy the theatre’s classic nature.

“The Arlington Theatre is significant for so many in the community as it evokes many wonderful memories for people that they want to share with future generations, and allows future generations to create meaningful memories of their own,” shared Karen Killingsworth, the Arlington Theatre’s General Manager. “Many who have lived in Santa Barbara have been going to see movies and shows at The Arlington for years, and there is much nostalgia for the feeling of an old movie house, which continues to this day.

Residents and tourists alike want to come and experience its beauty for themselves.”

Built following the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake and the city’s subsequent decision to reflect the Spanish Mediterranean style across its buildings, the Arlington Theatre opened in 1931. Architect Joseph J. Plunkett, who also designed the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club clubhouse and the National Guard Armory, among other local buildings, designed the landmark.

Throughout the decades, the theatre has hosted hundreds of film screenings, live performances, and community events, including the annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Once inside, guests are surrounded by a series of building fronts and balconies built out from the theatre walls. Above, twinkling lights in the ceiling create the impression of stars, prompting visitors to feel as if they are resting outside a Spanish villa.

The Arlington also houses a 1928 Robert-Morton “Wonder Morton” Great Theatre Pipe Organ, which will be highlighted during the 90th Anniversary Celebration event.

Donated from the Dallas Historical Society and restored by the Santa Barbara Theatre Organ Society in the 1980s, it is one of the five organs of its kind ever made.

Event attendees will be able to hear the historic organ played live at 12:30pm on Saturday, May 22nd by guest organist Adam Aceto. He will play a selection of classic songs, including pieces from Phantom of the Opera. Admission is free and open to the public, with seating on a first-come basis.

Beyond this performance, the theatre’s 90th Anniversary Celebration will feature of screenings of three moviegoer favorites: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Ghostbusters, and Blade Runner: The Final Cut. Screenings will take place each day at 2:30pm, 5:15pm,

and 8pm. Tickets are $5 and include a free popcorn.

“As the Arlington is celebrating its 90th birthday, we wanted to do some classic films, and we were trying to find films that would be fun for families and fun for adults,” explained Natalie Eig, Vice President of Marketing & Communications of Metropolitan Theatres.

Like the other reopened local movie theatres, visitors will be required to wear face masks. Additionally, the theatre will implement social distancing, with every other row remaining empty and three empty seats buffering each party of guests.

“We are grateful for the Santa Barbara County community and its incredible support of the theatre, the events, and films we’ve been so fortunate to host,” commented David Corwin, President of Metropolitan Theatres, in a statement. “This is our opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for their loyalty over the past 90 years. This will be a special year at The Arlington Theatre as we look back and celebrate our history of providing entertainment to the greater Santa Barbara area.”

JON STANDRING has been elected president of the Coastal Housing Coalition Board of Directors. Currently the president of Beachside Partners, Standring has previously worked in the commercial real estate field with Fidelity National Financial and Radius Group Commercial Real Estate. Student Winners of 11th Annual Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge

N IMPRESSIVE SELECTION OF LOCAL YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS were named winners of the 11th Annual Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge.

A business plan and pitch competition, the live-streamed April 23rd event offered college and high school student entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their innovative ideas and compete for more than $15,000 in cash and startup support.

Eva Krognes, UCSB Elvis Idunate, SBCC “After a demanding year that has laid bare many challenges in our region and across the globe, entrepreneurship and innovation restores hope in a bright future,” said Julie Samson, Director of Santa Barbara City College’s Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. “Our region’s aspiring student entrepreneurs demonstrate Mihir Shevgaonkar, UCSB Steven Benavidez, SBCC that innovation, passion, and determination can succeed against all odds. We invite our entire community to join in supporting their success.”

In the collegiate tier, SBCC Elvis Idunate received the $5,500 grand prize for his venture, Texas Tacos, to provide Isla Vista students affordably priced breakfast tacos. The second place $3,000 prize went to UCSB student Eva Krognes for WTR Pearl, a portable home water filter that can be added to any water container for fast filtration. UCSB student Mihir Shevgaonkar earned third prize at $2,000 for Solaris, which will aid farmers by manufacturing and deploying drones that will provide key insights on their fields.

Ben Webber Kennedy Frisell Additionally, veteran Steven Benavidez from SBCC was awarded the Military Veteran Startup Award for his venture Argonauts Tactical, which will manufacture textile tactical gear to be used for civil, law enforcement, paramedic, and private security use.

In the high school division, San Marcos High School students Kennedy Frisell and Ben Webber received the first place prize and $1,000 for their venture, Happy Patch, offering covers for medical insulin delivery devices that are aesthetic and maximize device life. Second place and Ava Cannizzaro a $600 was awarded to SMHS student Ava Cannizzaro for Soapgoat, creating a plastic-free alternative to shampoo bottles.

SMHS students Adopho Gonzalez and Guilio Rambeili won third place and $400 for Strapped IN, a car seat accessory that will prevent children from experiencing whiplash.

The winners were determined by independent judges who are Guilio Rambeili Adopho Gonzalez established entrepreneurs and investors in their own right and hold senior level positions in their companies.

The collegiate judges panel included military veteran Curtis Riggs of the Military Influencer Conference; Nitin Pachisia of Unshackled Ventures; and Mateo Neri of Emerald Peak Private Equity. Serving the high school tier were judges Rita Mounir of Allthenticate; Ronnie Rich of Fitbanker; and Warren B Ritter II of Wealth Management Systems.

People’s Self-Help Housing CELEBRE Students Explore California Colleges

A

FTER A YEAR OF REMOTE LEARNING, many college-bound students now look toward not only returning to in-person classes, but living on their future college’s campus. To help students decide prior to the college commitment deadline, People’s Self-Help Housing staff led students on a three-day tour of California universities and

colleges.

Participating students were a part of PSHH’s CELEBRE (College Enrollment for Latinas Entering Bright Rewarding Education) program, which encourages Latinas to overcome gender inequities and stereotypes and supports them in the admission and financial aid application process.

“Being on campus really gave me more things to think of when choosing which college I will attend,” said CELEBRE student Cristal. “I got to experience some factors that I had not thought of before when choosing a university such as weather, distance from home, and wildlife.

Something I really valued was our Latinx tour guides. Seeing so many Latina students attending prestigious universities made me go into a mindset of ‘If they can do it, so can I’ and it made me very excited for my future.”

Together, the group visited Fresno State, California State University Monterey, San Jose State University, St Mary’s College, University of California Davis, Sacramento State University, Sonoma State University, University of California San Francisco, and San Francisco State University.

Environmental Defense Center Opens Virtual Silent Auction Fundraiser

VERY YEAR, the Environmental Defense Center raises over 15 percent of its total budget through their annual Green & Blue: A Coastal Celebration event. RACE MATTERS SERIES

Decolonizing Methodologies LINDA TUHIWAI SMITH To people who have navigated and survived the violence of colonization, the term ‘research’ is conflated with European colonialism; the ways in which academic research has been implicated in the throes of imperialism remains a painful memory.

Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s seminal text explores intersections of imperialism and research – specifically, the ways in which imperialism is embedded in disciplines of knowledge and tradition as “regimes of truth.’ Concepts such as ‘discovery’ and ‘claiming’ are discussed and an argument presented that the decolonization of research methods will help to reclaim control over indigenous ways of knowing and being.

HILANTHROPIST, MOVIE PRODUCER, ACCOMPLISHED PUBLICIST, AND COMMUNITY ACTIVIST, Anne Douglas, the wife of Kirk Douglas for 67 years and local resident of Santa Barbara, passed away last week at the age of 102.

Born Hannelore Marx in Hanover Germany on April 23, 1919, she attended boarding school in Switzerland to avoid Hitler’s Germany and later fled to Belgium where she married Albert Buydens and became a Belgium citizen. They moved to Paris where she began working in the film industry. She spoke German, English, French, and Italian, which advanced her career when the Nazis, in occupied France, insisted German subtitles be on all movies.

She assisted directors such as John Huston, who she worked for as location scout for the movie Moulin Rouge in 1952. She met Kirk Douglas in Paris in 1953, where they both worked on the film Act of Love where he acted and she was a publicist. Anne and Kirk married in Las Vegas on May 29th, 1954. She became a United States citizen in 1959. She converted to Judaism when she renewed her wedding vows with Kirk on their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004.

"She brought out the best in all of us, especially our father. Dad would never have had the career he did without Anne's support and partnership,” said Michael Douglas, two time Oscar winning actor and step-son to Anne in a statement released by the family.

Long-time residents of Montecito, Anne and Kirk found Santa Barbara to be a refuge from Hollywood. Michael Douglas attended UCSB. The Douglas Family Preserve, named after the family, is one of Santa Barbara’s Anne especially liked the above photo, which she had printed and framed of her and Kirk on the red largest parks with 70 acres carpet at an SBIFF event honoring him. overlooking the ocean. Supporters and long-time friends of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Kirk Douglas Award was established in 2006.

"Anne was an extraordinary person in her own right, long before Anne Douglas she met Kirk. She was his partner in every sense of the word, and will be truly missed by all her friends and family, and the community at large. They LOVED Santa Barbara, and their favorite treat in recent years was a weekend in their beloved Montecito,” commented Interior Designer Corinna Gordon, a friend of 38 years. "Kirk’s name is synonymous with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, and SBIFF will be celebrating them later in the year at the annual Fundraiser here,” continued Gordon.

The Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film is SBIFF’s most honored Award. "I knew Anne for close to twenty years,” stated Roger Durling, Executive Director of SBIFF. "She was the epitome of a class act... I still cherish her hand-written notes and attention to detail.”

Anne was a prolific philanthropist and served on the boards of The Mark Taper Forum and the Center Theater Group. She was also a member of the Women’s Guild of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for 38 years.

She founded The Anne Douglas Center for Women at the Los Angeles Mission. In recognition of her philanthropic efforts, Anne was the recipient of Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2003.

Anne and Kirk started the Douglas Foundation in 1964, which has donated roughly $118 million to worthy causes. In 2012, Anne and Kirk announced pledges totaling $50 million to five nonprofit organizations, including the Motion Picture & Television Fund. They also gave another $15 million to the Anne in 2000 MPTF home in 2015.

Survivors include children Peter, Michael, and Joel; daughters-in-law Catherine and Lisa; grandchildren Cameron, Dylan, Carys, Kelsey, Tyler, Jason, and Ryan; great-grandchildren Lua Izzy and Ryder; and sister Merle, who lives in Berlin.

Coming out of COVID: Joys and Losses

S WE BEGIN TO GATHER IN PERSON most of us are experiencing a variety of emotions. At Hospice of Santa Barbara, we work with grief which, similarly to these times, comes with a mix of strong emotions that can be confusing and overwhelming. One of the things we know that helps is to name the feelings, to give them some space rather than trying to push them away or deny them. So let us harness the transformative power of naming emotions and challenges, of acknowledging them together.

Most of us are feeling excitement about seeing people we treasure, the possibility of travel, the ability to do our work in a more direct, face to face way. It will be an immeasurable joy to hug family members and friends, to put our hand on the shoulder of those we serve. We have hungered for these life affirming touches, for the simple pleasure of being in the company of others.

And I am hearing from almost everyone some level Rev. Kristen Rohm of anxiety about ‘opening up’ or returning to gathering in groups. I’ve heard introverts and extroverts alike wonder if they will feel overstimulated in groups after so long in isolation and pods. How will it be to navigate large groups again? What of the slower pace of life many of us have enjoyed?

For leaders there is the added stress of figuring out procedures and policies for how to be in person safely. Conversations about how to include everyone even though all haven’t been vaccinated; conversations about managing risk. How to balance continued desire to work remotely with also meeting in person. Creating new hybrid systems means more work for leadership.

We also need to name that when we gather, there will be some faces, some beloveds who are not there. All our communities have had folks die in the past year and we have not been able to gather together to share our grief. When we do gather, will that grief well up? Possibly, probably. How will we make space for that among our families and communities?

And we will grieve not only the loss of individuals, but the loss of experiences like time with newborn babies or those near end of life, loss of public ceremonies like memorials, graduations, and weddings, and for some, financial losses. The happiness of coming together may be tempered or paired with the sadness of these losses.

We might want to plan a ritual for ourselves and our communities to name all that was lost or left behind during the year of COVID, to support the journey through loss toward healing. We might pair it with a ritual of hope for moving forward, naming what is important to take with us from this time. This could be having everyone hold a rock in their hands while all these dynamics are named. Maybe a poem is read, music is played. Then inviting the gathered to set those rocks down, symbolically beginning the release of sadness and weight of the past year.

Then transitioning toward our hopes for being back together. Lighting candles or planting seeds for this new way of being together. What would fit you or your community?

It might also be helpful to acknowledge the physiology of long term stress on the body and nervous system. Nearly everyone I talk with speaks of feeling weary, less able to focus, less productive. This is how long held anxiety shows up in our bodies and our spirits. Movement based practices (yoga, tai chi, etc.), breath work, guided meditation with body awareness/ release focus, journaling, and getting out in nature can all be helpful to release some of this stress and attend to our bodies.

As we gather in person we may also notice easy annoyance with others as we get used to being with many people again. Let us be patient with ourselves and with others. We might be intentional about starting first with small groups so that we renew our skills for interacting in person and allow our physiological systems to adjust to larger groups.

Another thing we know from our work with grief is that language matters.

When someone is grieving a death or significant loss, the language of ‘returning to normal’ is not helpful because it is not possible. For all of us, there is no going back to the way things were before COVID when so many have died, when so much discord has occurred, when so much loss and anxiety have been stored in our bodies and our collective spirits.

Let us create safe space and find language to acknowledge the many losses and imagine new ways to be together as we move forward. Let us name what we have learned and the things we want to take with us from the past year. www.hospiceofsantabarbara.org Rev. HE HARBOR AREA IS CERTAINLY STARTING TO SHAKE THE SLEEP FROM ITS EYES after a long slumber during the Coronavirus shut-down of the last 15 months. Not that the harbor slumbered exactly … more like a great bear’s hibernation when resurgence is being incubated. Such was the case with many of Santa Barbara’s citizens, myself included. During the long winter months our house was treated to a make-over of sorts, both inside and out: power washing, spot painting here and there, and some brand new furniture. So why would the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, so beautifully situated at the end of the harbor walkway, be the exception?

Perhaps you have already heard the exciting news about the long awaited interior remodel of the Yacht Club, but if not, let me be the first to tell you about it. The proposed remodel is in preparation for the 150th anniversary of the founding to the Club ... just seven years after the conclusion of the Civil War. Think about that! According to the bible of all things maritime, Lloyd’s Register Of American Yachts, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club was formed in 1872 and formally incorporated on May 5, 1887 in a time before the first Southern Pacific train reached the city and State Street was a graded dirt thoroughfare with boardwalks. The proximity of the town to the ocean gave rise to the joys of water sports and sailing and growth was further stimulated by an influx of Eastern visitors. That same year, the long isolation of the community was broken with the completion of a commercial and public wharf named for its builder, John Peck Stearns, allowing ships to unload cargo and passengers without rowing them ashore.

The original SBYC clubhouse, as far as the records show, was a 35 x 20 foot building at the foot of Stearns Wharf on the West side with a total of 50 members. Originally the home of Stearns during the construction of the Wharf, this small space remained the Yacht Club’s home until 1924 when, during a southeast gale, it was washed out to sea. In 1925-26 prominent citizens Fleischmann, Storke, Murphy, and Spaulding had a new clubhouse built on Stearns Wharf (leased to the club) at the present location of the Harbor Restaurant. During this period of extensive growth, Major Fleischmann offered financial help for the construction of a harbor in its present location and by 1929, at a cost of $775,000, the Santa Barbara harbor was completed.

After decades of expansion, the 1930’s and 40’s were a tumultuous period for the Club. The crash of the stock market and the economic chaos that resulted, including the loss of the Stearns Wharf clubhouse, was followed by the Second World War. After the conclusion of the war, yachting events began as soon as 1946 and not long after negotiations were opened with the City for a portion of beach as a location for a future clubhouse. By 1951, a building was constructed and remained in use until 1966 when it was replaced by today’s structure. Over the years, improvements have been made, minor interior upgrades and structures added, and most recently a newly expanded full service commercial kitchen. The upcoming remodel will be the first major reconfiguration of the interior spaces in 30 years.

That Spring is in full bloom is exemplified by the Yacht Club’s proposed improvements.

DesignARC, a prominent local firm crafted the plans now on the table awaiting the beginning of construction.

“The remodel is scheduled during a time that is very advantageous for the Club,” noted Commodore Andra Escola. “We will be able to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club with a ‘Bristol Condition’ facility.” Escola further explained that the restrictions of the pandemic combined with favorable weather during the summer months is a unique opportunity for the Club to operate at maximum allowable capacity while accomplishing a remodel of this magnitude.

The proposed improvements certainly sound exciting. For starters, the planned combination of the bar and the Ocean room will serve to double the most utilized space in the clubhouse.

And that’s not all, folks... there’s more to come. I’m excited to hop aboard this train and watch the improvements reveal themselves. I’ll continue to keep you posted as well, so stay tuned...

Work begins on the new MONTECITO DEBRIS FLOW Randall Rd. debris basin. The estimated project cost of $15.5 to $17.5 million is funded by FEMA ($13.5 million grant) and local flood control money. It covers homeowner land purchases and basin development in two phases. The 2018 weather disaster and debris flow took 23 lives, destroyed over 100 homes, and damaged over 300 other properties.

Top political and community leaders say the collaboration to find the funding and create the project was one-of-a-kind with the urgent timeline and multi-agency cooperation along with agreements from the property owners.

County Opens Some Offices To Public

VARIETY OF IN-PERSON SERVICES AT SANTA BARBARA COUNTY OFFICES started this week, when the County Clerk- Recorder’s office opened their doors on Monday.

Both in person and online services have evolved following a forced closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other County offices will remain closed until health officials move the county to the Yellow Tier of restrictions. The Governors office is predicting a fully open business environment sometime in June.

The ClerkRecorder’s offices are located at 1100 Anacapa Street and will be open from 9am to 4pm.

The City of Santa Barbara Community Development and Public Works departments, at 630 Garden St., are open for limited in-person appointments. Other city offices will be opening following new health guidelines.

Galleries To Open At Santa Barbara Museum of Art

NE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT COLLECTIONS OF ART WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI, The Santa Barbara Art Museum will welcome the community back into its galleries on May 11th, in accordance with COVID-19 protocols.

There will be three exhibitions on display: Highlights of the Permanent Collection; Small-Format American Paintings from the Permanent Collection; and Highlights of American Art. Highlights of the Permanent Collection, offers some of the most celebrated works of art from SBMA’s permanent collection, as well as several of the most exciting gifts and acquisitions in the areas of modern and contemporary art, photography, and the arts of Asia.

Small-Format American Paintings from the Permanent Collection is a selection of small format paintings and a reminder of the breadth of the Museum’s holdings of American art from the 18th to the mid-20thcentury. Oil and brush conjure the illusion of near and far persuasively, from the close perspective of still life, to the life-size proportions of bust portraiture, to sublime expanses of land and sky. Whether within hand’s reach or at an immeasurable distance, both types of visual experience are captured within the confines of a canvas no more than 15 inches in diameter.

Santa Ynez Valley Charter School to Host Cow Pie Bingo Fundraiser

FISHERMAN’S MARKET with a wide variety of fish, crab, urchin, and abalone draws a crowd at the Santa Barbara Harbor every Saturday.

The commercial fishers, on the main dock at the harbor, sell their fresh catch of rock fish, yellowtail, halibut, and more. Some locals eat the fresh catch on the spot with urchins costing just $10.

Highlights of American Art, features a selection of 18 paintings and six sculptures that tell the story of the major achievements of American art from the first half of the last century—from the urban Realism of Robert Henri and the Ashcan School, to the Symbolist inflected landscapes of Arthur Davies or Marsden Hartley, to the daring abstraction of Stuart Davis or Arthur Dove.

Americans Getting a New Deal

RESIDENT BIDEN ANNOUNCED IN HIS FIRST ‘NON-STATE OF THE UNION’ ADDRESS that “America is on the move again,” saying in effect that government isn’t the problem but the solution to today’s problems, including the horrific events of the past year.

We are seeing the effects of those solutions in last Friday’s first estimate of Q1 Gross Domestic Product growth.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2021, said the BEA, reflecting the continued economic recovery, reopening of establishments, and continued government response related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All sectors expanded, with consumer spending surging 10.7 percent, the economy adding 1.5 million new jobs, business investment jumped up ten percent, and housing investments up eleven percent in the ongoing housing boom.

Much of this is possible because of the still record low interest rates that the Fed has promised to maintain at least through next year. But consumers have benefited the most with the assistance payments, of course, so much so that disposable personal income increased $2.36 trillion, or 67.0 percent, in the first quarter, compared with a decrease of $402.1 billion, or 8.8 percent, in the fourth quarter.

And personal saving was $4.12 trillion in the first

quarter, compared with $2.25 trillion in the fourth quarter, which has boosted the personal saving rate—personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income—to a huge 21.0 percent in the first quarter, compared with 13.0 percent in the fourth quarter, and three to five percent historically.

Consumers with more money in their pockets means the economic recovery has just begun and businesses will be playing catchup to the increased demand for the rest of this year, further boosting economic growth.

The American public seems to like governmental solutions to our problems, says Gallup’s Frank Newport.

“The latest update (of polling data) shows that 54 percent of Americans say the government should do more to solve our country’s problems, while 41 percent say the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. This is the highest percentage choosing the ‘government should do more’ option since Gallup began asking the question in 1992.”

But will the rising sentiment for big government continue as President Biden asks for more spending?

President Biden outlined his American Families Plan at last Thursday’s address that is summarized by the White House: “The American Families Plan is an investment in our children and our families—helping families cover the basic expenses that so many struggle with now, lowering health insurance premiums, and continuing the American Rescue Plan’s historic reductions in child poverty. Together, these plans reinvest in the future of the American economy and American workers and will help us out-compete China and other countries around the world.”

It is a ‘new’ New Deal that brings us out of this pandemic and the deterioration of American education, infrastructure, research & development, and environmental protection that is despoiling the planet and our ability to survive as a democracy.

“History shows that Americans tend to adopt big government initiatives when there are big problems facing the nation,” Gallup’s Newport continued, “including COVID-19, the Great Recession, 9/11, World War II, and the Great Depression.”

But there has been too little agreement on how we should be paying for future generations since World War II, I said in my last column. Let us hope we are willing to pay enough forward to win this world war against COVID-19 that is also a battle to save the liberal democracy our constitution has envisioned.

SBCC Performing, Visual and Media Arts Pop-Up Exhibition

OW THROUGH MAY 31ST, the entire community is cordially invited to visit an online pop-up exhibition featuring the work of Santa Barbara City College students from the departments of American Ethnic Studies, Art, Film and Television Production, Graphic Design, Photography, Journalism, and Multimedia Arts and Technologies.

Students worked closely with faculty to create and articulate a body of thought-provoking work inspired by the theme of this year’s All-SBCC Student Conference hosted by the Honors Program, “Justice: Environmental, Economic, Racial.”

The exhibition, which represents a capstone to each student’s course of study and academic experience, is available to view virtually at www.artspopupsbcc.com. It is the first exhibition presenting student work from across departments in the Career and Academic Pathway (CAP) as part of the Guided Pathways initiative at SBCC. Waterhouse Gallery - a closer look

The Spirit of a Place

New Paintings by Wyllis Heaton & Thomas Van Stein

ERHAPS A METAPHOR FOR TWO ARTISTS’ STYLES, the team at Waterhouse Gallery cleared their walls, making space for the paintings of Wyllis Heaton and Thomas Van Stein.

In the work of Heaton, broad brushstrokes of color, loosely arranged, swirl together to form buildings in Venice, silhouettes of trees, and boats reflected in deep water mirrors.

In Van Stein’s, color plays - from oceanscapes to fields of color vibrating in brilliant sunlit moments.

“Two wonderful styles, two wonderful artists,” shared Diane Waterhouse, curator of the exhibition.

For viewers, the works are arranged salon style, with groups of Heaton’s work splashed amidst a formal presentation of Van Stein’s, asking for a dance between the artists’ perspectives.

“Wyllis Heaton and Thomas Van Stein are uniquely different in styles, but rich in their thoughtful brush strokes... Each captures Santa Barbara in a beautiful way – from Thomas’ expressive nocturnes to Wyllis’ delicate gouache paintings,” Waterhouse added.

The artists, both locals from Pasadena who have known each other for about 15 years, previously exhibited together at the Architectural Institution of America (AIA) in Santa Barbara. They also both paint en plein air, enjoy traveling, and have been art educators. And, they have made painting a serious part of their lives, dedicating time, energy, and perseverance to their study of the world via a paintbrush.

Van Stein is a well loved and respected instructor at SBCC’s School of Extended Learning, one of Santa Barbara’s treasured institutions. Yet, though he teaches, he also pushes himself.

“What’s challenging for me these days is striking a balance in everyday life; finding time to create art amidst calamity. The act of painting helps me stay centered,” he shared. “Lately, I have been inspired by color, light, and design, and integrating all the new information I have obtained through research and teaching.”

Heaton’s time is shared with designing swimming pools, fountains, and gardens in Montecito and on the Riviera, allowing him the freedom to experiment with his creative urge.

“I paint to realize my visualize dreams,” he shared. Heaton arrived in Santa Barbara to attended UCSB, studying computer science and then art. Then he moved to Pasadena’s Art Center, earning a degree in illustration. “I’ve always been interested in re-presenting ideas or imagery,” he explained of this choice. Those illustrative chops he developed during that time are still present in his work as he travels around Santa Barbara and the world, endeavoring to present the beauty he discovers.
