“We’ve long known we need to find a new home because the current warehouse in Santa Barbara is a converted fire station that was never meant to serve as a warehouse. It has no loading docks, and is very small, holding only 15 percent of needed food for this end of the county,” explained Foodbank CEO Erik Talkin.

The Foodbank needs a new facility in south county to solve challenges of lack of space, increasing food insecurity, and to ensure countywide disaster readiness.

ITH AN EYE on promoting food security for all, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County will host its 11th Annual Table of Life Gala on Saturday, October 8th. The gala is a fundraiser to support Foodbank’s new south county facility, called the Sharehouse, and to provide nutritious food to residents facing hunger.

“We could use that much produce just to provide food to our low-income neighbors who don’t know where their next meal will come from,” Talkin continued.“Weneed even more space to be truly ready to serve south county should a large scale disaster strike, the kind we know could happen here, like a

“We need to be truly ready to meet such a moment, since we know it’s likely in this region,” added Talkin.

The finished Sharehouse will enable the Foodbank to meet community need with a fully functioning warehouse and food storage facility, Nutrition Promotion Center, volunteer space, and administrative offices.

Individual seats are still available for $300 each. Tickets may be purchased at www.TableOfLife.org.Theculminationof a decade-long search for a comprehensive south county warehouse and administrative facility, the new “Sharehouse” is located at 80 Coromar Drive in Goleta, just off Hollister between Storke and Los Carneros Roads. The Sharehouse name indicates it will serve as more than just a warehouse; it will be a comprehensive center where the community can “share food, education, and hope.”

When the Foodbank moves warehouse operations, administration, education, and volunteer programs to the new facility (estimated summer 2023), it will have full capacity to provide greater access to healthy food for those facing hunger across our community, and also to provide emergency food for all of south county in case of largescalePurchaseddisaster. in June 2021 after an exhaustive search, with $3 million from Foodbank reserve funds and a loan from Montecito Bank & Trust, the Sharehouse still needs significant modifications to its 57,000 square-feet of warehouse space to upgrade and expand refrigeration, storage, and transport capacity, and ready 20,000 square-feet of office space to house staff, education promotion initiatives, and volunteer coordination and service. The

Foodbank is grateful for leadership gifts received from the following organizations and individuals: La Centra-Sumerlin Foundation; Riley and Susan Bechtel Foundation; California Department of Social Services; and the Paul and Patricia Bragg Foundation.

Clothing displays and racks fill Rêver Atelier’s sunny, vibrant interior, illuminated by a pink neon sign. Chapman personally selects each item, traveling to Los Angeles’ Fashion District to curate an inventory that will introduce more LA styles to Santa Barbara’s shopping scene. She prioritizes brands that utilize quality materials, working to offer as many brands as possible that use sustainable practices or are made in the U.S. Several local brands are

FASHIONS IN EYEPOPPING COLORS ALONGSIDE STAPLE ITEMS for any closet can be found at Rêver Atelier. Recently relocated to State Street in front of Paseo Nuevo, the locally-owned business has built a name for itself at its Victoria Court shop. Presenting dresses and shirts alongside jeans, swimwear, and fun accessories, the store is a one-stop shop.“I love having a clothing boutique,” said owner Haley Chapman. “Working in retail is something I’ve grown to love — especially working with customers and clients and being able to style and help them.”The end result? “They love being more raisedChapmanconfident,”shared.AbornandSantaBarbara

By opening on State Street, Chapman hopes to inspire more locals to open businesses downtown. She feels the store continues the memory of her mother, Noelle Glotfelty, who passed away earlier this year.

The result is an array of colorful and creative dresses, skirts, and blouses ideal for special events or individuals searching for more trendy pieces to express themselves. More relaxed items meant for everyday wear join this selection, including sweaters, jeans, and tops. Activewear and swimwear complete the store’s varied inventory.

Peter and Molly are not the only ones with their eyes set on the trunk. With each chapter being told from a different perspective, including the notorious pirate Black Stache, readers embark on a complex treasure hunt. Its constant references to Peter Pan’s origins add to the fun, inviting readers to draw connections and compare characterizations. The novel also improves on problematic areas of the original Peter Pan story, including the indigenous people living on the island being written as respected characters.

REGULATIONS will be in the spotlight at the Santa Barbara City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 20th, when the State Street Ad Hoc Committee makes recommendations concerning design guidelines and a fee structure based on square footage.

The State Street Ad Hoc Committee, comprised of City Council Members Mike Jordan, Kristen Sneddon, and Oscar Gutierrez, will be recommending new requirements for parklet design elements following two and a half years of operating under an emergency ordinance. Part of the mix, local restaurateurs have volunteered to pay fees in order to continue the use of the public right of away. The city is now ready to determine how much and collect fees for that use.

In another matter concerning parklets, a recent letter ordering Coast Village Road restaurant owners to reduce the size of their parklets to fit within two parking spaces was sent by City Administrator Rebecca Bjork. The letter was prompted by a petition signed by 25 merchants asking for the return of parking spaces to support economic success in the area.

Peter and the Starcatchers offers so much more than the typical prequel, though. Writing with great wit and imagination, Barry and Pearson craft an original adventure story full of intrigue and magic

ALMOST

Four sequels follow Peter and the Starcatchers, presenting readers with the option to continue Peter’s escapades all the way to the present day. As the first book in the series, Peter and the Starcatchers remains an enchanting tale of pirates, mermaids, and swordfights that celebrates all things Peter Pan.

EVERY CHILD — AND ADULT — KNOWS THE STORY OF PETER PAN. Since J.M. Barrie first penned Peter’s adventures over 100 years ago, the tale has been retold and reinterpreted countless times on the stage, in animated as well as live-action films, and in literature. However, perhaps no reimagining remains as compelling as Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Published in 2004, the book is a prequel to the original Peter Pan story, providing details such as how Peter became immortal, how mermaids and pirates came to live in Neverland, and how a certain dangerous pirate lost his hand.

The Keatings’ garden is the result of four years of hard work, after their property caught on fire after the 2018 debris flow ruptured a 22-inch, 1,000-PSI main transmission gas line that ignited the pilot light in their garage. Their new garden features an abundance of native flowers and trees, as well as fruit trees that are irrigated with help from two graywater systems that divert laundry and shower water. Flow sensors help detect and prevent water leaks.

California to Test Water for Microplastics

Microplastics are tiny particles that shed from plastic products like clothing as well as various types of packaging and can be found in the air, ground, ocean, and potentially in drinking water.

The proposal calls for about 30 of the state’s water providers to begin testing for microplastics in their drinking water sources, including reservoirs and rivers.

“Both Yacht Club and VNA staff and volunteers put their heart and soul into this event, maybe because they too have been touched by the organization.”

Curiously, Lufkin’s feelings have been somehow infused into the Charity Regatta’s DNA. Her long working relationship with Lailan McGrath and Easter Moorman has blossomed into a lasting friendship which certainly translates into the event’s success and its warm and welcoming tone.

SBYC Staff Commodore Francie Lufkin and Nick Sebastian along with the steering committee, members of the Yacht Club Women; assisted Lailan McGrath, VNA Health Foundation Director; and Easter Moorman, VNA Director of Development; to help make the day the spectacular success that it was! A combination of generous sponsorships, ticket sales, donations, and a silent auction raised a total of over $165,000. An unexpected gift of $250,000 from the late Lad Handelman’s wife Linda, in gratitude for VNA’s caring services and help, served to end a very, very specialHavingday. covered the Charity Regatta since 2005, I was curious as to what is actually involved in setting the course for such a huge and complicated event. The best resource, I concluded, would be Staff Commodore Lufkin who has been involved as a committee member from the beginning and has acted as Chair since 2015.

Yachts of Love Charity Regatta for VNA Health

“What’s most important to me is that the Charity Regatta brings the community together. It’s become a welcoming all day fund-raiser for an origination that has impacted almost everyone in Santa Barbara,” Lufkin continued.

About the nuts and bolts of the event Lufkin exclaimed, “The VNA staff is awesome! They do almost everything for us – the mailings, publicity, sponsorship information, poster, and the agenda… the effort they put out exceeds anything else they do during the year!” She added, “Lailan is super organized and remains vigilant during the entire process and Easter keeps her eye on all aspects of the event and continues to promote it all year-long.” Lufkin confirmed that the Charity Regatta contains an assortment of spinning plates requiring coordination and teamwork for the day to progress seamlessly. And it always appears seamless... each and every year!

The theme that resonated with me was that everyone involved in the Charity Regatta, whether volunteer or staff, is fully committed to VNA Health’s mission of compassionate caring. The Regatta is an opportunity to bring the Santa Barbara community together to express gratitude for VNA’s services and loving care. Regardless of the work involved and the many hours of preparation, giving back to an organization that has touched so many lives is in itself a reward. Thank you VNA Heath and it’s host the Santa Barbara Yacht Club!

A YEAR VNA HEALTH, one of the most worthwhile organizations in Santa Barbara, graces the harbor for the ‘Yachts of Love’ Charity Regatta hosted by the Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC). This year’s annual Charity Regatta took place on Saturday, September 10th, in celebration of both VNA’s legacy of compassionate care as well as the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s 150th Anniversary! Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic VNA Health has maintained its much needed programs, some of which include community and palliative care, music therapy, bereavement services, Serenity House, and the Loan Closet. Despite a week of ‘unusual weather’ with heat, high humidity, and rough seas, the erstwhile SBYC event committee hosted the most successful Charity Regatta in its 18 yearCo-Chairshistory!

“Why do I continue do this …?” she mused, “because I believe in VNA’s mission! Supporting VNA Health is a way for our Yacht Club to give back to an organization that has touched the lives of our families and others in the Santa Barbara community.” Lufkin revealed that VNA’s important services have impacted her own family which further committed her through the Yacht Club and as a member of the VNA Health Board of Directors.“Thetouching speech made by Lad Handleman’s wife as she presented her generous donation certainly spoke for me,” Lufkin exclaimed. “A family member of mine received end of life services at Serenity House and other members have received services through this amazing and caring organization.”Working on the Charity Regatta has been Lufkin’s greatest joy and source of satisfaction.

SB Middle School Supports Elings Park

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH - Emergency cleanup efforts took place this morning at dawn east of Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf where a 40-foot boat crashed ashore during tropical storm Kay Saturday. Heal the Ocean organized the plan with the city. Marborg Industries was on the scene at low tide.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH - A suspected panga smuggling boat was spotted this week in the early morning hours Monday on the beach where Summerland meets Montecito. Actor Rob Lowe was among those who saw it.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH - During a soaking rain storm, I recall the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Santa Barbara in March of 1983. We stood in the courthouse sunken gardens on squishy grass and mud awaiting the ceremony. Then it was off to the Mission and Rancho del Cielo. I was a radio reporter using a cassette recorder in a plastic bag for protection. As the years went on, the taco lunch and horseback ride at the ranch always made the whole story so authentic to Santa Barbara and not just a ceremonial series of stops.

SB Co. Sheriff investigated. TowBoatUS picked it up. It’s unknown if drugs or humans or both were part of the suspected smuggling.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH - 50-100 calls a day have come in since mid-August about sick or injured marine mammals in the Counties of Ventura and Santa Barbara. The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) has trained volunteers responding and helping the animals. The Domoic acid algae bloom issue is the main cause. This rescue was on West Beach in Santa Barbara Wednesday morning. The marine mammal here had a large open back wound.

such as historian Niall Ferguson, may be doing the Federal Reserve’s job by predicting a recession in the coming year. Their dire warnings are causing plunging stock prices for starters. And oil prices are plummeting as well, with WTI oil down to $83 per barrel at this writing.Dr.Ferguson warned last Friday that the world is sleepwalking into an era of political and economic upheaval akin to the 1970s.

Such remarks from recognized pundits are enough to recall the draconian measures taken by former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker’s Fed that raised its overnight rate to 20 percent to combat the 1970’s era inflation, causing two subsequent recessions in the 1980s.So,

Fed Chair Powell’s Fed doesn’t have to fight inflation on his own. There’s help on the way from those pessimists who won’t see what is staring them in the face—an economy still recovering from the worst pandemic in 100 years.

DOOMSAYERS,

the bad news about a possible recession may be good news for economic growth,

“In August, the Services PMI® registered 56.9 percent, 0.2 percentage point higher than July’s reading of 56.7 percent,” said Anthony Nieves, Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Services Business Survey Committee. “The Business Activity Index registered 60.9 percent; an increase of one percentage point

This is also indicated by the various surveys that measure consumers’ future inflation expectations, such as put out by the University of Michigan’s sentiment survey. Future expectations of CPI inflation have averaged three percent since 2012 when the survey was first conducted.“Themedian expected year-ahead inflation rate was 4.8 percent, down from 5.2 percent last month and its lowest reading in eight months,” said the UMich survey’s Director and Chief Economist Joanne Hsu. “Uncertainty over expectations rose considerably, particularly among lowereducated consumers. Long run expectations came in at 2.9 percent, remaining within the 2.9 to 3.1 percent range seen in the past year (actually since 2012 per its chart). So,all

Such fears generated by the doomsayers—with little to go on except past history rather than present conditions—are doing as much to bring down inflation as the Fed’s hawkish comments that they will continue to push up rates until inflation is tamed.

Maybe it will keep the Fed from raising interest rates much further?

“The ingredients of the 1970s are already in place,” Ferguson, Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick.

“The monetary- and fiscal-policy mistakes of last year, which set this inflation off, are very alike to the ’60s,” he said, likening recent price hikes to the high inflation of the 1970s.

The ISM’s service-sector index that measures business conditions at companies such as restaurants and hotels rose to 56.9 percent in August from 56.7 percent in the prior month, the Institute for Supply Management said Tuesday. It is the highest level since April.

and consumers, if it keeps the Fed from putting too much pedal to the interest rate metal, as the saying goes. The Fed may not have to keep boosting short-term rates if they see consumers and producers pulling back as demand cools.

The U.S. economy is doing well, in spite of the doomsayers, as illustrated by the FRED graph above showing employment in the service-sector that employs most American workers holding up (gray bar is last recession).

born in Tucson, Arizona, to a mother of German descent and a father who is a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation. He embraced his Native American heritage from an early age, dancing at traditional Powwows as a teen and making his own regalia to do so.

Like his cultural ancestors, he uses everyday items in his work — Ritter jokes that he uses Home Depot as a sort of artsupply store — as well as found objects and refuse ranging from skateboard wheels to skeleton keys.“His work is comparable to Claes Oldenburg, in that he plays with scale,” Ritter said.

For example, some of the necklaces in the show reference pieces from the Santo Domingo tribe in New Mexico — “necklaces that are called ‘battery birds,’ because they were originally made using pieces of plastic taken from car batteries,” Ritter said. “Ishi’s use of found materials is an echo of these prior practices. It’s kind of a form of homage while also being a part of his current practice.”

“For the past 16 years, he has been living and working in Los Angeles, but he has not had a solo museum exhibition in that time,” Ritter said. “Since I see creating a regional dialogue for contemporary art as one of my jobs here, this seemed like a great opportunity — and very much on brand for the vision I want to chart for this institution.”

Ritter, who is also an associate professor in UC Santa Barbara’s History of Art & Architecture department, describes Glinsky as “a Native American artist with one foot in contemporary art, and the other foot in the traditions of multiple Indigenous nations.”

between settlers and Native Americans of the Plains states,” Ritter said. “They became the repositories of a new visual storytelling language. Hopefully, the works start a conversation around this art form and its history.”

the creator of the colossal jacket, Los Angeles based artist Ishi Glinsky.

After assembling the show, Ritter faced another challenge: creating descriptive labels that would put the works in context. He enlisted the help of Kendall Lovely, a Ph.D. student in history at UC Santa Barbara whose research centers on Indigenous history and material culture in the U.S. Together, they strove to “guide a general audience through these works” by describing both Glinsky’s artistic techniques and the historical traditions he draws from.

Art, Design & Architecture Museum presents Native American artist Ishi Glinsky’s first-ever museum show

Ritter was in Southern California from Minnesota to interview for the position of director of the Art Design & Architecture Museum (AD&A) at UC Santa Barbara. When he took over the job in September, he looked at the exhibition calendar and spotted an opening for one year later. He decided that would be the perfect time for his first show at the AD&A as a curator — a survey of art by

Contemporary Art, Historical Resonance

The exhibition, “Ishi Glinsky: Upon a Jagged Maze,” is open now through January 22, 2023. Its centerpiece is, of course, Coral vs. King Snake Jacket, the larger-than-life replica of a leather bomber jacket that first stunned Ritter. The piece, now part of the permanent collection at UCLA’s Hammer Museum, is one of 25 works by Glinsky included in the AD&A Glinsky,show.40,was

YEAR AND A HALF AGO, Gabriel Ritter visited the Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles hoping to discover some compelling new art. He was not expecting to be gobsmacked by a garment.“This jacket stopped me in my tracks,” he recalled. “It’s almost a story tall. It looks like a punk jacket, or a biker jacket made for a giant.”

Once he started examining it, he realized there was a lot more to the work than its size.

“In Ishi’s case, this is to bring attention to these traditions and art-making practices that have largely been overlooked. He literally creates larger-than-life pieces, so people can’t help but take notice of them and pay attention.”“Theworks shown here are an inter-tribal celebration of heritage,” Glinsky said, adding that he hopes to either introduce viewers to, or expand

It was festooned with patches covered in letters and symbols — a mash-up of images that evoked past and present, the personal and the political, ancient traditions and contemporary pop culture.

“There is a series of paintings, sculptural works, works on paper, and a series of necklaces,” Ritter said. “They are, again, scaled up enormously.”“Lookingatthe past, or in the mirror, is a bit of a trip,” said Glinsky. “Viewing this work at UCSB has allowed me to actively pause and trace my own footsteps. What is seen, and on view, is in my DNA.”

“That really caught my attention,” he recalled. Not only was it aesthetically stunning, but it was also a fractured portrait of Native American life and art, in all its complex multiplicity. “It is,” he concluded, “a monument to survival.”

Ishi Glinsky: Upon a Jagged Maze is on view at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum through January 22, 2023.

Since this is Glinsky’s first museum show, Ritter had no road map as to how to present his art, and he and the artist had numerous conversations before settling on an earlycareer retrospective survey.

But not every reference is historical: There are also nods to the rap group Public Enemy and such current-day political organizations as the American Indian Movement. “What I find so interesting about Ishi’s work is that it refuses to be just one thing,” Ritter said. “It asks the viewer to consider the multiplicity of its meaning.”Thatsaid, Glinsky’s work can also be appreciated on a more basic level: It is pleasing to the eye. “These works are meticulously and beautifully crafted,” Ritter said. “But they’re also imbued with great meaning and significance. They tell stories about traditions that have been left out of the contemporary art conversation and deserve to be recognized.”

Ishi Glinsky: Upon a Jagged Maze is on view through Jan. 22, 2023 at the AD&A Museum on the UC Santa Barbara campus. Hours are noon to 5pm Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.museum.ucsb.edu or call 805-893-2951.Printed permission of UCSB

“Santa Barbara is notable not only for its architecture, magnificentbutalsoforitsconcentration of respected architects moved to create art. We’re happy to bring some of them together.”

Jeff Shelton, one of the local architects whose style is known to move toward the playful, has contributed his “Shop Dog Lamps” to the exhibition. Back in LA in the late ‘80s, Jeff and his wife had a ‘side gig’ making furniture and lighting in a metal shop, which birthed Jeff’s first hand-painted lamp creatures. Though the menagerie included a couple of dog-like things as well as goats, rabbits, and a snake, the term Shop Dog stuck. The new Dogs are all designed, cut, welded, wired, and handpainted by Jeff.

AAC was first introduced to SEE International by one of its members, Dr. Harry Brown, who founded the nonprofit in the 1970s.
