ITH AN EYE on promoting food security for all, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County will host its 11th Annual Table of Life Gala on Saturday, October 8th. The gala is a fundraiser to support Foodbank’s new south county facility, called the Sharehouse, and to provide nutritious food to residents facing hunger.
“We could use that much produce just to provide food to our low-income neighbors who don’t know where their next meal will come from,” Talkin continued.“Weneed even more space to be truly ready to serve south county should a large scale disaster strike, the kind we know could happen here, like a

REGULATIONS will be in the spotlight at the Santa Barbara City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 20th, when the State Street Ad Hoc Committee makes recommendations concerning design guidelines and a fee structure based on square footage.
The State Street Ad Hoc Committee, comprised of City Council Members Mike Jordan, Kristen Sneddon, and Oscar Gutierrez, will be recommending new requirements for parklet design elements following two and a half years of operating under an emergency ordinance. Part of the mix, local restaurateurs have volunteered to pay fees in order to continue the use of the public right of away. The city is now ready to determine how much and collect fees for that use.

LOCAL GIRLS EXPLORED OUR NATION’S CAPITAL during a five-day trip hosted by Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s Eureka! Program last month. With visits to multiple museums, universities, and a meeting with Congressman Salud Carbajal, the trip let the entering high school seniors explore college and career opportunities, monuments, museums, and Capitol Hill.
Since 2011, Buttitta has worked at KEYT-News Channel 3 as a reporter and most recently the Chief Meteorologist for the ABC, CBS and Fox affiliates. She previously earned two Emmy awards for team reporting and coverage of the Thomas Fire and best newscast, covering the Refugio oil spill, as well as won the prestigious Golden Mike award for the best weather segment for four consecutive years (2017-2020). A lifelong Central Coast resident, Buttitta earned her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. www.countyofsb.org

They also visited the Girlhood Exhibit at the Museum of American History, the Holocaust Museum, Museum of African American History, Museum of Natural History, and the United States Botanical Gardens.

ConAm proposal is for a transit-oriented development project with approximately 333 residential rental units with not less than 15 percent of the total units affordable to very-low, low-, and moderate-income households. The affordable units will be income-restricted through recorded long-term covenants and integrated throughout the overall project site. The project will include onsite amenities for the residents and an after-school learning center. The project is adjacent to MTD’s Line 7 route and will provide new transit riders, as well as the opportunity for MTD to expand its operations throughout its service area.
“Both my parents were Navy, and we have a lot of military in my family,” said Palmer. “I wanted to go and do something that was exciting.”
“Housing is the biggest crisis facing our community today. We are proud that MTD is able to enter into an agreement with the aim of producing new transit-oriented housing supply on our property that is consistent with the County’s Eastern Goleta Valley Community Plan, while providing an opportunity for MTD to further expand its transit services in eastern Goleta,” said Dave Davis, MTD’s Board Chair.

Public Input Requested on City of Goleta’s Community Development Block Grant
The 31 room Waterman has a gathering area directly on State Street and a swimming pool. The Waterman represents the first of two Marriott projects for StonePark Capital in Santa Barbara, with the 122-room “Courtyard by Marriott” at 1601 State Street anticipated to open this fall. StonePark Capital has teamed up with Azul Hospitality Group to oversee the management of both of these hotels.

The State Water Resources Control Board has been working with 20 labs in seven nations to pioneer a way of monitoring microplastics, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Robertson studied business economics at the University of British Columbia and accounting at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. She worked as a consultant in Canada prior to moving to Santa Barbara in 1989, where she was appointed fiscal director for the SB Community Housing Corp. Her past experiences include serving as director of finance for SFSB, director of finance and administration at the Foundation for SB City College, and vice president of finance and administration at the Music Academy of the West. Robertson also served as SFSB’s interim president and CEO from April to July 2015, and February to September 2018.
The Keatings’ garden is the result of four years of hard work, after their property caught on fire after the 2018 debris flow ruptured a 22-inch, 1,000-PSI main transmission gas line that ignited the pilot light in their garage. Their new garden features an abundance of native flowers and trees, as well as fruit trees that are irrigated with help from two graywater systems that divert laundry and shower water. Flow sensors help detect and prevent water leaks.
California to Test Water for Microplastics
Microplastics are tiny particles that shed from plastic products like clothing as well as various types of packaging and can be found in the air, ground, ocean, and potentially in drinking water.
The proposal calls for about 30 of the state’s water providers to begin testing for microplastics in their drinking water sources, including reservoirs and rivers.
COMMENT IS BEING REQUESTED on the City of Goleta’s Community Development block Grant Program, which supports renovating City facilities and parks to meet the Americans with Disability Act access standards.

Montecito Residents Win WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest MAKING A COMEBACKWATER-CONSCIOUSSTRONG, after the 2018 debris flow, Montecito residents John and Teri Keating have won the Santa Barbara County’s WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest’s Grand Prize for their gorgeous native garden. The contest was held by the Santa Barbara County Water Agency, the Montecito Water District, Carpinteria Valley Water District, Vandenberg Village Community Services District, and the Cities of Solvang and Santa Barbara. Each district selected a winning, water-efficient residential garden, with the Keatings winning the county’s grand prize.

BARBARA ROBERTSON will retire from her position of president and CEO of the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, effective December 31st. Assuming the role a month before COVID lockdowns, Robertson successfully restructured staff positions and led the transition to remote work and virtual events and applicant interviews. During her tenure, SFSB awarded close to $22 million in college scholarships, as well as adopted a new application software platform and met programmatic and institutional deadlines and revenue goals.

The theme that resonated with me was that everyone involved in the Charity Regatta, whether volunteer or staff, is fully committed to VNA Health’s mission of compassionate caring. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH - During a soaking rain storm, I recall the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Santa Barbara in March of 1983. We stood in the courthouse sunken gardens on squishy grass and mud awaiting the ceremony. Then it was off to the Mission and Rancho del Cielo. I was a radio reporter using a cassette recorder in a plastic bag for protection. As the years went on, the taco lunch and horseback ride at the ranch always made the whole story so authentic to Santa Barbara and not just a ceremonial series of stops.
SB Co. Sheriff investigated. TowBoatUS picked it up. It’s unknown if drugs or humans or both were part of the suspected smuggling.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH - 50-100 calls a day have come in since mid-August about sick or injured marine mammals in the Counties of Ventura and Santa Barbara. The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) has trained volunteers responding and helping the animals. The Domoic acid algae bloom issue is the main cause. This rescue was on West Beach in Santa Barbara Wednesday morning. The marine mammal here had a large open back wound.

Locals’ favorite night of art and culture will focus on the fall season in its next iteration from 5 to 8pm on Thursday, October 6th, when Downtown Santa Barbara hosts its next 1st Thursday. Spanning dozens of participating art galleries and venues, wine tastings, live music, and the State Street
The fundraiser opens with the Glow Gala from 6 to 10pm on Thursday, October 6th, serving an elegant dinner with live entertainment and an art auction. Locals will next put on their dancing shoes for the Bright Bash, a multisensory art show and dance party, from 6 to 10pm on Friday, October 7th. The show will close with a Community Showcase from 6 to 10pm on Saturday, October 8th. Perfect for the whole family, the showcase will include arts and crafts, face painting, and more.

And oil prices are plummeting as well, with WTI oil down to $83 per barrel at this writing.Dr.Ferguson warned last Friday that the world is sleepwalking into an era of political and economic upheaval akin to the 1970s.
Such remarks from recognized pundits are enough to recall the draconian measures taken by former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker’s Fed that raised its overnight rate to 20 percent to combat the 1970’s era inflation, causing two subsequent recessions in the 1980s.So,
Fed Chair Powell’s Fed doesn’t have to fight inflation on his own. There’s help on the way from those pessimists who won’t see what is staring them in the face—an economy still recovering from the worst pandemic in 100 years.

born in Tucson, Arizona, to a mother of German descent and a father who is a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation. He embraced his Native American heritage from an early age, dancing at traditional Powwows as a teen and making his own regalia to do so.
Like his cultural ancestors, he uses everyday items in his work — Ritter jokes that he uses Home Depot as a sort of artsupply store — as well as found objects and refuse ranging from skateboard wheels to skeleton keys.“His work is comparable to Claes Oldenburg, in that he plays with scale,” Ritter said.

For example, some of the necklaces in the show reference pieces from the Santo Domingo tribe in New Mexico — “necklaces that are called ‘battery birds,’ because they were originally made using pieces of plastic taken from car batteries,” Ritter said. “Ishi’s use of found materials is an echo of these prior practices. It’s kind of a form of homage while also being a part of his current practice.”
“For the past 16 years, he has been living and working in Los Angeles, but he has not had a solo museum exhibition in that time,” Ritter said. “Since I see creating a regional dialogue for contemporary art as one of my jobs here, this seemed like a great opportunity — and very much on brand for the vision I want to chart for this institution.”
Ritter, who is also an associate professor in UC Santa Barbara’s History of Art & Architecture department, describes Glinsky as “a Native American artist with one foot in contemporary art, and the other foot in the traditions of multiple Indigenous nations.”

He enlisted the help of Kendall Lovely, a Ph.D. student in history at UC Santa Barbara whose research centers on Indigenous history and material culture in the U.S. Together, they strove to “guide a general audience through these works” by describing both Glinsky’s artistic techniques and the historical traditions he draws from.

When he took over the job in September, he looked at the exhibition calendar and spotted an opening for one year later. YEAR AND A HALF AGO, Gabriel Ritter visited the Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles hoping to discover some compelling new art. He was not expecting to be gobsmacked by a garment.“This jacket stopped me in my tracks,” he recalled. “It’s almost a story tall. It looks like a punk jacket, or a biker jacket made for a giant.”
Once he started examining it, he realized there was a lot more to the work than its size.
“In Ishi’s case, this is to bring attention to these traditions and art-making practices that have largely been overlooked. “There is a series of paintings, sculptural works, works on paper, and a series of necklaces,” Ritter said. “They are, again, scaled up enormously.”“Lookingatthe past, or in the mirror, is a bit of a trip,” said Glinsky. “Viewing this work at UCSB has allowed me to actively pause and trace my own footsteps. What is seen, and on view, is in my DNA.”

“That really caught my attention,” he recalled. Not only was it aesthetically stunning, but it was also a fractured portrait of Native American life and art, in all its complex multiplicity. “It is,” he concluded, “a monument to survival.”

Since this is Glinsky’s first museum show, Ritter had no road map as to how to present his art, and he and the artist had numerous conversations before settling on an earlycareer retrospective survey.
But not every reference is historical: There are also nods to the rap group Public Enemy and such current-day political organizations as the American Indian Movement. “What I find so interesting about Ishi’s work is that it refuses to be just one thing,” Ritter said. “It asks the viewer to consider the multiplicity of its meaning.”Thatsaid, Glinsky’s work can also be appreciated on a more basic level: It is pleasing to the eye. “These works are meticulously and beautifully crafted,” Ritter said. “But they’re also imbued with great meaning and significance. They tell stories about traditions that have been left out of the contemporary art conversation and deserve to be recognized.”

Jeff Shelton, one of the local architects whose style is known to move toward the playful, has contributed his “Shop Dog Lamps” to the exhibition. Back in LA in the late ‘80s, Jeff and his wife had a ‘side gig’ making furniture and lighting in a metal shop, which birthed Jeff’s first hand-painted lamp creatures. Though the menagerie included a couple of dog-like things as well as goats, rabbits, and a snake, the term Shop Dog stuck. The new Dogs are all designed, cut, welded, wired, and handpainted by Jeff.

AAC was first introduced to SEE International by one of its members, Dr. Harry Brown, who founded the nonprofit in the 1970s. Since then, the organization has served communities in over 40 countries, activating volunteer eye-care professionals to provide free vision screenings and surgeries to individuals in need.
“As an artist, looking at photographs of art is not the same as actually going in and looking at it,” said McGinnis. “Standing in front of a painting and looking at its full scale has a significant impact on your interpretation of that work.”

Kimble’s work focuses on texture as he brings his expertise in decorative finishes such as artisan plasters, gilded stencils, and decorative concrete overlays to his abstract fine art paintings.
“We present art of the west, not necessarily ‘western art’ and look for emerging artists who paint the 21st Century West as well as those recreating the 18th or 19th Century West.”California artist Michael Obermeyer will serve as the Guest Artist and Jurist. Obermeyer serves as the President of the California Art Club and is a Signature Member of both the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. A native of Southern California, Obermeyer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at California State University, Long Beach.
