Flower Empower Blooms

LOWER AND ART LOVERS ACROSS THE NATION can take part in something extra special this spring ~ Dream Foundation’s Flower Empower Blooms: Floral Arts Showcase, to be held online during April and May 2021. The competition includes seven categories with three classes in each category. Entrants can upload photos of their best tablescapes, floral headpieces, hand-tied bouquets, orchid displays, garden photography, and floral still-life paintings, and even upcycle found treasures into floral masterpieces. Classes are for youth, amateur, and professional entrants. “People can enter their own work or get together with family, friends, or colleagues to enter as many categories as they like as many times as they like,” explained Dream Foundation CEO Kisa Heyer. Entries will be judged by an online “people’s vote” where anyone can cast their vote for individual entries. Star Judges will then select overall winners for each class. “Our incredible Star Judges panel includes world-renowned experts in the fields of floral design, photography, art, and interior design,” says Heyer. Winners of every class will Westerlay Orchids be awarded a prize from an Arrangement – exciting array of prizes. The artists, retail team headed entry with the highest number by Paige Harmon of online votes will receive the People’s Vote Grand Prize: a two-night stay for two in a Sevilla King Room at Hotel Californian, Santa Barbara’s premier urban

destination in the heart of the Funk Zone, with 48 hours of driving in a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. One Judges’ Grand Prize Winner will be randomly selected from all 21 class winners and receive a two-night stay for two in a deluxe king room at the glamorous El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, including two spa treatments and dinner for two in one of the hotel restaurants, with 48 hours of driving in a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. Contestants for Youth classes are invited to donate $25 per entry and contestants in the Amateur and Professional classes are invited to donate $50 per entry. Entry bundles of three entries with a suggested donation of $100 are also available. Funds raised will help Flower Empower deliver floral bouquets, fresh-baked cookies, fine chocolates, and cards to people in need of comfort and cheer in hospices, cancer centers, and their homes in the Santa Barbara area throughout the coming year. To add further support, Fabulous Florals will donate a percentage of sales for Dream Spring Flower Boxes, available for online purchase April 12th to May 15th. Retailing at $125 per box plus shipping, boxes offer a choice of all-white or colorful spring flowers, including peonies, tulips, stock, Sweet William, ranunculi, carnations, scented geraniums, spray roses, and sweet peas as fresh as the day they were harvested. AKING THE STAGE BY STORM, Ysabella Yturralde became the 2021 Spirit of Fiesta and will dance the soles off her shoes in weeks to come. A highly prized honor for decades, the Spirit will headline most Old Spanish Days events. Yturralde is a San Marcos High School junior. Savannah Hoover, a third grader at Hollister School, won the competition to be Junior Spirit of Fiesta. Both dancers will receive a $600 scholarship along with their respective titles. Additionally, the Tourist Office of Spain in Los Angeles has sponsored an award for the Spirit of Fiesta and one guest to take a trip to Sevilla in the Andalucia region of Spain. There, they will not only have the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent sights and culture, but also be able to participate in a flamenco show and have private lessons. Spirit of Fiesta runner-ups will be awarded a $300 scholarship. This year’s runner-up is Natalie Mowers, a San Marcos High School junior, and the Junior Spirit of Fiesta runner-up is Ariyanna Alcantar, a third grader at Foothill Elementary. Students Celebrate Monarch Butterflies and Poetry Month with Museum Store Window Display

New Board Leadership at Habitat for Humanity

ABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY (Habitat Santa Barbara) has announced the appointment of new board officers and the addition of new board leadership.

ELEBRATE NATIONAL POETRY MONTH, Earth Day, and local students’ talents by visiting the Santa Barbara Museum of Art this month! After learning about the monarch butterfly through creative and collaborative programming, the third through sixth graders of Mountain View Elementary, Montecito Union School, and Vieja Valley Elementary School will display their art and poetry in the Museum Store’s window through April 30th. “The poems accompanying the collages are not only expressions of the monarch butterfly’s beauty and fragility, but also the students’ discovery of their own creativity as a voice that can celebrate and protect the natural world,” explained SBMA’s display announcement. The window display is the result of unique programming offered through a number of local organizations. Last month, Cal Poets in the Schools taught students a nature-themed poetry lesson focusing on the monarch butterfly, encouraging the young poets to utilize descriptive language and haiku forms. The SBMA also distributed 220 art kits to students and presented a video lesson inspired by Diana Thater’s Untitled Videowall (Butterflies). Following this, students created tissue paper collage butterfly wings, which were placed alongside their poems. This month, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will further share a video about the importance of supporting monarch butterflies and restoring their population by planting the proper flowers. “The hope is that this spring, students and their families will be outside in their gardens, digging in the soil, and planting,” stated SBMA.

Applications Open for State Street Advisory Committee Members

O YOU HAVE A VISION for what State Street could become, or have ideas on how to address pressing issues in downtown Santa Barbara? The Santa Barbara City Council has opened applications to join the City’s State Street Advisory Committee, which will guide the formation of a Downtown State Street Area Master Plan. Applications are due by 5pm on May 20th. “The City Council seeks a diverse group of people to review professional and community input and provide guidance of the Downtown State Street Area Master Plan,” reads the City’s announcement. “The Council seeks people whose professional experience, education, as well as community and stakeholder representation to help guide the Master Plan development.” Once formed, the committee will discuss and offer recommendations on topics such as streetscape design and amenities, transportation and circulation, historic resources, equity and accessibility, strategies to address individuals facing homelessness, housing and redevelopment opportunities, and more. Community News Newly Appointed to County of Santa Barbara Commission for Women STEFANIE HERRINGTON has been appointed Commissioner on the County of Santa Barbara Commission for Women for Supervisory District 1. An estate planning attorney, Herrington is the owner of Montecito Law Group. In addition to her new role, Herrington contributes to the community by being a charter member of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset, where she also serves on their charitable foundation’s board. She has also previously served as a president of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. Herrington is passionate about equity in mentoring, education, and opportunities for women.

USIC CAN FILL THE AIR as Santa Barbara businesses open their doors a little wider, with the announcement of Santa Barbara County’s move to the Orange Tier and its accompanying new rules, which still include wearing masks and social distancing. The new measure became was effective April 21st. Changes are based on a new Health Officer Order that is in accordance with the rules and framework of the California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. “We have made significant progress in lowering our local case rate,” stated Dr. Henning Ansorg, Health Officer for Santa Barbara County. “Every member of our community plays an important role in helping us achieve and continue to enjoy the benefits of loosening restrictions. We must continue to be mindful of safety practices including wearing masks, physically distancing, washing hands, and getting vaccinated as soon as possible.” Some of the activities now allowed under the Orange Tier include: • Restaurants: Indoor seating increases to 50% capacity or 200 people maximum. • Gyms and Fitness Centers: 25% capacity indoors; indoor pools can open. • Wineries and Breweries: 25% or 100 people indoors maximum • Movie Theaters: 50% or 200 people maximum. • Museums, Zoos and Aquariums: 50% capacity for indoor activities. • Places of Worship: 50% capacity indoor activities. • Bars with no food service: Open outdoors with modifications. • All retail: No capacity limits. United Boys & Girls Clubs Launches “Back on Track” Program

NITED BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY HAS LAUNCHED ITS “BACK ON TRACK” initiative to help students that are struggling to catch up after over a year of remote learning. “Back on Track” consists of three programs to help students better perform at their respective grade levels. “We want our kids to feel empowered in their journey through learning and our Clubs, along with staff, are here to be a guide, providing them with the tools they need, while also making it fun,” stated Laurie L. Leis, UBGC Vice President of UBGC member Advancement. One of the programs offered is Super Saturdays, which provides math and ELA tutoring, educational social sciences projects, organized games, and sports clinics. As motivation, students become eligible to win awards through participation, and can even qualify for a day at Camp Whittier in the Santa Ynez Mountains. The UBGC Back on Track initiative also encompasses Summer Spectacular Camp, a ten week long summer program, and Power Hour, which offers after school tutoring for kindergartners to high school seniors. Both of these programs further support students’ math and literacy skills, helping them to catch up in their academics. “We believe that every child deserves an equitable journey in education and learning, and we hope to raise enough money by the end of May to provide a free summer camp at all seven locations,” shared Leis. “Donate today, and together we can make that happen for the youth in Santa Barbara County.” For more information or to contribute to the UBGC of Santa Barbara County, visit www.unitedbg.org

A Free Film Festival

ROBUST SELECTION OF FILMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD celebrating and promoting excellence in the art film disciplines of Animation, Dance, Documentary, Experimental, Narrative, and Original Score are ready for viewing at the International Fine Arts Film Festival website. Winners were selected by 12 judges from across the nation, based on criteria such as filmmaking to their ability to create interest, and bring arts from painters, sculptors, hand-drawn animators, professional dancers, musicians, and over the edge experimental artists who combine many artforms to life. The top winners’ include UpWell, Initiation, Walls of Limerick, Bisque, Still Untitled, Perfect Dancer, The Prepartor, Gloria’s Call, Tip Toland, Outlier, Winter, and Birch Grove. These films hail from the USA to Australia, Austria, Canada, Ireland, and Poland. Runner ups, including Semi-Finalists and Honorable Mentions, each phenomenal, are also listed and available for individual viewing on the Winners Page on the website. These also included five Director’s Choice awards picked from a remaining list of 75 films. Notable is UpWell, directed by J’aime Morrison, with Montecito roots, who won top prize in Experimental. It was judged on its story-line and filmmaking, which included women surfers in CA, as well as its display of soulfulness and sheer beauty. The two judges who chose it are not, nor have ever been surfers, nor do they live near oceans. Founding Director Lynn Holley considers their choices a testament to the power of a great film. A local surfing advocate and professional has donated money to the festival and awarded a cash prize to the filmmaker for supporting women filmmakers and women surfers. For an introduction to the Festival by Founder by Lynn Holley, visit the website’s home page. “The amount of films accepted this season is a hundred times more than ever,” Holley shared. “I was shut down in my apartment, and I kept extending the time of entry. As I enjoyed watching so many films, I just started selecting more for eventual screening. I figured it would be a great opportunity for filmmakers to be in a festival, and I believed it would be certainly easier than trying to manage so many people in a physical space.” www.IFAFF.org operates as a non-profit entity of its fiscal receiver Art Without Limits. Donations keep us screening, which is an essential and creative outlet for professional and student filmmakers.

INEMA IS IN THE BLOOD OF BARBAREÑOS, with two Santa Barbarabased film festivals beginning this week! First, the Green Film Festival will celebrate Earth Day with a series of environment-focused films. Then, viewers can tune into the International Fine Arts Film Festival to enjoy over 100 films from around the world for free. The Green Film Festival will be held alongside the Community Environmental Council’s Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival, which is being livestreamed free from April 22nd to 24th with recorded content available through May 22nd. With content from both local and international filmmakers, each selected film upholds principles of furthering environmental and social justice, protecting our climate, and community resilience. A special highlight will be the streaming of Gaviota:

The End of Southern California, which shows footage collected over five years of the special wildlife that calls this region home. The festival will also include Better Together, a film featuring over 20 local organizations making a difference for our community. “We all feel like we’re part of an ecosystem, that there’s an ecology of our relationships, so that what affects one person, affects us all in some way,” said David Pellow, UCSB Environmental Studies Program Chair, in response to the film. “We’re tied in an inescapable web of mutuality and interdependence.”

Meanwhile, the 5th season of the International Fine Arts Film Festival is featuring 103 films from 23 countries on its online platform. Created by Lynn Holley, the former curator of SBCAST and the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara, the festival’s films celebrate and promote excellence across art disciplines. This year’s festival winners were selected by twelve judges nationwide, and include UpWell, Initiation, Walls of Limerick, Bisque, Still Untitled, Perfect Dancer, The REH Fine Art at GRAYSPACE Prepartor, Gloria’sCall, Tip Toland, 219 Gray Avenue, in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone Outlier, Winter, and Birch Grove. All of the 103 films, including the winners and runner-ups, are available for streaming through the end of May. FTER A WARM AND SUNNY WEEKEND UNDER CLEAR SKIES and calm waters indicating the year’s Springtime awakening, I’m always astounded how we humans – and all living creatures - are interconnected with the environment. The smell of the salty sea air, the feel of the sand beneath our feet, the sound of waves adorned with flashes of sparkling light on the ocean’s surface remind us of our own connection on the shores of the mighty Pacific. This last year, and the previous ones, have certainly made us aware how vulnerable, yet powerfully impactful, the forces of Nature can be. By the time this goes to print we will have celebrated Earth Day 2021 with a theme that mirrors its global mission “to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide.” Much of our surroundings we either take for granted, lack awareness of its presence, or do not comprehend its importance in our lives. Is it possible to grasp the significance of our place in the natural order of things if we haven’t an awareness of the web of life within which we all exist? Curiously, it’s a film, one of this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Documentary Film, that has certainly opened my eyes farther than just the end of my own nose! Titled strangely My Octopus Teacher, the film not only engulfs its central character in the rhythmic world of underwater interconnections, but completely captures the viewer right along with him. The empathetic presence of its narrator, producer, and filmmaker, conservationist Craig Foster, who, together with cinematographer Roger Horrocks, frames his own mid-life uncertainties through the medium of photography in the mysterious, often treacherous waters near his birthplace in South Africa. Foster’s own Beatrice – like Dante’s guide through mid-life in The Divine Comedy – is a cephalopod upon whom he projects his own story that touches the human heart. The lush kelp forests beneath the surface of the South African sea is the canvas upon which Foster’s adventure is painted. Life within the kelp forests is the reality which he – and we – find ourselves: the teeming variety of life forms going about their business in an otherworldly and unseen realm full of vibrant colors. Filtered beams of surface light create a sense of the mysterious while being at the same time serenely calming. As Foster said of himself near the end of the film, “I felt that I also was no longer just a visitor beneath the tumultuous sea, but fully a part of this strangely compelling and fluid world.” Foster’s narrative lays bare the human need for solitude, as well as its reciprocal, a deeply felt longing for connection. Foster dives, with only flippers and oxygen between himself and his environment, around the kelp forests as he observes and comments on the myriad of life forms and their relationship to one another in the deep. This underwater world flows with a vibrant palate of colors, a shift in reality for land creatures such as ourselves. Eventually Foster discovers his muse and guide, the octopus teacher upon which the story is based. Naturally shy, the octopus is an animal whose lifetime extends to approximately one year. For that period of time, Foster follows her with his heart and camera in hand, accepting what he is incapable of understanding, and respecting her intelligence, instincts, and abilities to survive all odds. At least until – after birthing her offspring – Nature programs her demise. Foster, who has experienced a physical and spiritual connection, respectfully leaves her to her fate, but the lessons learned and the closeness remain with him. Foster’s ‘love story’ is a metaphor for connection, not only between human and cephalopod but between ourselves and all life on the space ship we call Earth. This beautifully shot documentary allowed me to view humanity as a small part in a huge web of interdependent life: in fact a tiny speck in the unanswerable mystery of the Universe that surrounds us. I highly recommend this film, available on Netflix (and hopefully the recipient of an Academy Award!), especially after the advent of the global celebration of Earth Day. Hope you celebrated too! Economic VOICE Equitable Wealth = Equitable Growth By Harlan Green / Special to VOICE

E MUST CURE THE RECORD INCOME INEQUALITY if we are to re-unite the United States into a country that serves Americans in both red and blue states. The current disunity is a result of whole swaths of the country losing out on economic opportunity. Our modern, tech-based capitalism has raced ahead, rewarding those that can keep up. The wealth is distributed in a highly unequal fashion, notes the Center for Equitable Growth, a progressive think tank, with the wealthiest one percent of families in the United States holding about 40 percent of all wealth and the bottom 90 percent of families holding less than one-quarter of all wealth. The result has been that the top 20 percent of America’s educated class are winning the race with educational opportunities that have enabled them to take advantage of modern technologies. And what happens to people who feel left behind—in education, good jobs, and adequate housing? They find a way to protest. There are protests against immigrants because many believe their jobs have been stolen. There are protests against open borders because they see those jobs fleeing to other countries with cheaper wages. Many are so angry they tend to believe any theory confirming their suspicions that the educated elitists with the best jobs are abridging their freedoms. That is why President Biden’s plan to return the U.S. to full employment by the end of 2022 is so important. The just passed $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan will boost benefits of lower and middle income consumers, raising incomes for the poorest 20 percent of families by an average of 20 percent, according to the Tax Policy Center’s analysis, and create seven million jobs by the end of 2021, while top earners would see their income rise less than one percent, according to the CBO. The proposed $2 trillion plus infrastructure bill will create more good jobs by requiring the development of universal broadband, such as 5G networks that China is already building on a grand scale, a major issue in rural communities. Documents suggest it will also include nearly $1 trillion in spending on the construction of roads, bridges, rail lines, ports, electric vehicle charging stations, and improvements to the electric grid and other parts of the power sector, all requiring higher paying jobs.

“I think a package that consists of investments in people, investments in infrastructure, will help to create good jobs in the American economy,” testified Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in congressional hearings recently, “and changes in the tax structure will help to pay for those programs (and also reduce income inequality).” The investments in people is even more important to lift the spirits of the 13 million that still have no jobs or would like full time jobs, including greater access to Obamacare and Medicaid, aid that the previous administration had been drastically reducing. Bringing back trust in government will do the most to boost public spirits. And that means spending on programs that make life easier for most Americans. There is no easy path to a greater equality of opportunity in the richest country in the world, because we must first restore our faith in the ability to help each other with programs that benefit all Americans. Community Environmental Council Welcomes New Board of Directors Members and Officers

HE COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL (CEC) recently added several new members and named officers to its Board of Directors. In a pivotal year of program expansion, coupled with federal momentum, these dynamic community leaders bring a wealth of experience that will “propel CEC’s bold climate action plans.” As ambassadors of the organization, they will advocate, network, and promote on behalf of CEC. Recognized as a 2020 California Nonprofit of the Year and 2020 City of Santa Barbara Climate Hero, CEC has worked since 1970 to incubate and innovate real life environmental solutions that directly affect the California Central Coast. www.cecsb.org

NEW 2021 CEC BOARD OFFICERS:

BARBARA LINDEMANN is the President of the CEC’s Board of Directors. An emerita professor of History and Ethnic Studies at Santa Barbara City College, she spent more than 30 years teaching courses on topics such as U.S. history, history of American women, and history of immigration to the U.S. Originally from Pennsylvania, she earned her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Harvard University. She then moved to California, where she earned her PhD in History at UC Santa Barbara. Having been a volunteer and supporter of CEC for many years, even having served as a member of the CEC’s Partnership Council for five years, Lindemann is well acquainted with CEC’s mission and goals and prepared for her new role as Board President.

CATHERINE BROZOWSKI will serve as Co-Vice President of CEC’s Board of Directors. Currently, she works as the Executive Director of the Audacious Foundation and as Principal of consulting firm Giving Matters, which supports foundations and families on grantmaking strategy. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the REACH program. A strong supporter of nonprofits, Brozowski has previously worked for the National Network of Grantmakers, as the Corporate Giving Manager for Washington Mutual, and the Vice President of the Orfalea Foundation and the Santa Barbara Foundation. She earned her MPA with an emphasis in nonprofit management from the University of Washington.

CHARLES NEWMAN will also serve as Co-Vice President of the CEC Board of Directors. Having grown up in Southern California, he practiced law specializing in the defense of complex class actions as well as commercial litigation. He is a former director of the Montecito Water Board, and sat on its Recycled Water, Finance, Water Supply, and Legal and Public Information committees. He has also served on the Montecito Planning Commission, acting as its chair between 20192020. Newman earned his BA from UC Santa Barbara, and his JD from Washington University School of Law. DAVID PELLOW will serve as Secretary of the Board for CEC. He is the Dehlsen Chair and Professor of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project at UC Santa Barbara. In this role, Pellow teaches classes on environmental justice, sustainability, social inequality, and social change movements. His experiences have also included consulting and serving on the boards of various organizations that work to improve living and working conditions for multiple marginalized communities. Originally from Nashville, TN, he earned his BA in Sociology and Religious Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as well as his MA and PhD in Sociology from Northwestern University.

CHRISTINE DEVRIES is also a new member on the CEC’s Board of Directors. She currently works as a management consultant for small businesses, banks, and nonprofit organizations, specializing in time management, leadership training, and employee engagement. Overall, she holds more than 30 years of experience as a financial services executive. DeVries has given back to her community by serving on the boards of the Montecito and Carpinteria Rotary Clubs, and is a three-time Paul Harris Fellow. She also served as co-chair of CEC’s Partnership Council until 2021. Currently, DeVries is a charter member of the Santa Barbara Climate Reality Chapter and a trained Climate Reality Leader and advocates for actions to address climate change and leads various educational events.

KATHY YEUNG is the CEC’s new Treasurer of the Board. Currently the Chief Executive Officer of ViQi Inc, a cloud-based, AI image analysis software company, Yeung has more than 15 years of experience in startup and mid-size growth tech companies. An active community member, in the past she has served on the boards of KIPP LA Prep Charter School, Los Angeles Social Venture Partners, and the UCLA Anderson School of Management Alumni Association. NEW BOARD MEMBERS: JON CLARK, a Santa Barbara local and the President of the James S. Bower Foundation, has joined the CEC Board of Directors. Clark interned with the organization in the 1980s and later became CEC’s third Executive Director. His past experiences also include acting as the Executive Director of the Wendy P. McCaw Foundation. An active community member and leader, Clark has served on the boards of Storyteller Children’s Center, Carpinteria Children’s Project, Direct Relief International, Santa Barbara Region Economic Community Project, Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, Cottage Health, and the Santa Barbara Foundation. In 2017, the Santa Barbara Foundation named him Man of the Year.

DAVID JACKSON joins the CEC’s Board of Directors with more than ten years of experience working in the philanthropy field with an emphasis on the arts and education. Currently, Jackson works to research potential grantees for the Zegar Family Foundation and expand the foundation’s outreach to other organizations with similar goals to further environmental justice, education standards, and address solutions to homelessness. Before coming to Santa Barbara, he worked out of the ZFF’s New York‐based office, where he partnered with T.E.A.K. Fellowship and others to increase the number of grantees. He has also worked in development for the Little Orchestra Society in New York, and helped launch the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center in Los Angeles.

IVETTE PERALTA, the Education Program Manager for Planned Parenthood California Central Coast, has also joined CEC’s Board of Directors. A former chair of the Santa Barbara County Commission for Women, she also holds the position of Vice-Chair representing the 5th District. Her past experiences include, working as a creative content producer for Univision Costa Central, a bilingual reporter and producer for Santa Maria Times en Español, and co-producing Mejorando, a local Spanish radio show centered on promoting health and well-being in the Latinx community. She is also a founding member of Toastmasters Valle de Santa María. Currently, Peralta also gives back to the community by being active in the Latino Legacy Awards Planning Committee.

A natural lands management consultant, Schuyler spent over 20 years working to preserve open spaces prior to his retirement. He has worked as Director of Ecological Restoration for the Catalina Island Conservancy, Manager for the State of Hawaii’s Natural Area Reserve System, and Director for the Nature Conservancy on Santa Cruz Island. He has also given back to the community by holding the positions of Board President of the Environmental Defense Center and Board Chair of the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens. Community News Marc Dailey New Cottage Health VP of Clinical Services

MARC DAILEY has been promoted to the position of Cottage Health’s Vice President of Clinical Services. Having served as Cottage Health’s Administrative Director of Surgical Services since 2016, Dailey will now be responsible for administrative leadership for many of the hospitals’ procedural areas, such as operating rooms, outpatient surgery, radiology, pharmacy, and more. San Marcos High Mock Trial Team Recognized by District

HE SAN MARCOS HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL TEAM was recognized by Santa Barbara Unified School District Superintendent Hilda Maldonado during its April 6th School Board Meeting for winning fourth place in the California State Mock Trial Championship last month. “I’m so impressed by this team and the time and effort they put in to not just reach a common goal, but to succeed at a very high level,” said Superintendent Maldonado. “The Mock Trial program prepares students on so many important levels, including developing critical thinking and persuasive speaking. Congratulations to the entire team for representing our district so well at the State level!” The SMHS team qualified for the state competition after winning the Santa Barbara County Mock Trial Championship in February. Between March 18th to 21st, 32 teams from across California competed via Zoom, with students acting through courtroom procedures and presentations as if they were actually attorneys,

witnesses, and bailiffs. In addition to the team’s fourth place win, SMHS senior Jack Strand was honored as “Best Police Officer in the State” for his performance in the role of the prosecution detective. “In 15 years of coaching Mock Trial at San Marcos, this team stands apart as being steadfast in their mission, resilient, and tenacious,” said coach Luke Ohrn. “They made the best of a difficult situation and showed real strength of character as they worked hard during every Zoom practice, scrimmage, and at the county and state competitions. I am very proud to have worked with these terrific students and our adult coaches.” In addition to Ohrn, the SMHS team is coached by local attorneys Hilary Dozer and Jim Kreyger. The senior student captains are Ayla Sutter, Owen Williams, Peri Wilby, and Makena Shlens.

Local Businesses Invited to Participate in SB Public Library’s Summer Reading Program

UMMER IS FAST APPROACHING, and with it the much loved Santa Barbara Public Library annual Summer Reading Program. Held to encourage local kids to read, learn, and engage with their community, this year the library is inviting businesses to participate in a community-wide scavenger hunt to celebrate 2021’s program, themed “On the Same Page.” “Local businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, so we wanted to use every opportunity to highlight them,” said Library Director Jessica Cadiente. “The scavenger hunt will not only celebrate reading, but hopefully spark conversations and help everyone get to know our neighbors who run these shops and restaurants.” Participating businesses will only need to select their favorite summer read and post an 8 ½ x 11 sign in their windows so that it is visible to members of the public. The Library will provide laminated signs for each Scavenger Hunt location. Neighborhood Navigation Center Serves Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

N AN EFFORT TO SERVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS, a Homeless Services Neighborhood Navigation Center continues to operate each Thursday from 2 to 7pm at Alameda Park. There, 17 community service partners offer resources such as clothing, showers, medical care, and food to individuals in need. “[We’re] bringing services directly to people, so whether we’re talking about clothing or Doctors Without Walls or showers, how do we build a holistic kind of continuum so that people can have their immediate needs met, and then be connected to long-term solutions like case management, mental health appointments, hospitals, those kind of things,” explained Jeff Shaffer, Director of Initiatives at Santa Barbara Alliance for Community Transformation. HEN FRIENDS VISITING LOS ANGELES ask me “what are the mustsee places in LA?” of course I tell them about downtown’s world-class cultural venues. Besides The Music Center, The Disney Hall, MOCA, and The Broad Museum, there is a gem that is often overlooked - Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. It was designed in 1998 by Pritzker Prize winning Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. Like many art aficionados, I visit the cathedral on a regular basis to take in it’s beautiful architecture and reconnect with the many contemporary artworks by LA artists. Among them is John Nava, who was commissioned to create a series of large tapestries, including The Communion of Saints, Baptism of the Lord, and Holy City. Now, 20 years later, Nava was commissioned to do yet another monumental tapestry, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. As with many of his original set of John Nava poses with Mary tapestry in September 2020 tapestries, Nava used a neighbor and friend as the model for the image of Mary, in this case a young DACA recipient. I learned about the Cathedral’s latest tapestry from the January issue of Angelus magazine. Lucky for me, I have known Nava and his work for many years, so I got in touch with him, and he invited me to his studio in Ojai. Being impressed and inspired by his tapestries in the Cathedral is one thing, but having a close encounter with his art in the studio is an experience that leaves you slightly intoxicated. I like to look at Nava’s paintings so closely that my nose practically touches the canvas, taking in every brushstroke. But, with his monumental tapestries, I cannot resist the temptation to touch their woven surface with my hands. Guilty me... Among the good news of the last few weeks was the announcement that The Getty Villa reopened its galleries and gardens to the public. For me, The Getty Villa is a cultural temple where we can communicate with ancient Gods and Muses. I visited the Villa last weekend to say hello to some of my favorite objects in the permanent collection. Take a look at this nearly 5000-year-old Cycladic sculpture, The Harp Player. If you didn’t know its ancient origins, wouldn’t you think this work came straight out of Picasso’s studio? And here are two more of my favorite pieces from the Villa permanent collection, both about 2,000 years old; beautifully preserved bronze sculpture of Infant Bacchus and the Fayum Mary, by John Nava, 2021 Mummy Portrait of a Bearded Man, whose thoughts and character still speak to us many centuries later. Not to be missed is the current exhibition Mesopotamia: Civilization Begins, which covers three millennia of artworks and artifacts from some of the earliest cities in 3200 B.C.E. to Alexander the Great’s conquest of Babylon in 331 B.C.E. I’ve been familiar with the art of well-known LA based photographer Mona Kuhn for quite some time, but her current solo exhibition at Galerie XII at Bergamot Station gave me a whole new perspective of her work. This exhibition, titled Works, is a retrospective spanning two decades of Kuhn’s work with an emphasis on the nude, predominantly female body. As always, to meet with the artist and to hear the stories behind her work deepened my understanding and appreciation of Kuhn’s photography. The multiplicity of the nude bodies in the photos speaks beyond sensuality and transcends into the spiritual John Nava in his studio, Ojai, CA realm. Alongside the opening of the show, Thames & Hudson released Kuhn’s first monograph entitled Works. The exhibition runs through May 29th. A few weeks ago I talked about the solo exhibition, Better Days, at Luis De Jesus Gallery by Dallas based artist Evita Tezeno. Her collage paintings on canvas and rag board introduce you to a variety of characters in everyday life. And what interesting characters they are... Sunday was the last day of the exhibition, and Tezeno flew to Los Angeles to hold a private reception for its closing. I asked her if the characters in her paintings are based on real people. Does she photograph them first? To my surprise, her answer was no. She paints from memory, inspired by family, friends, and neighbors. Local Artists to Unveil New Earth Day Mural By Daisy Scott / VOICE

N EYE-POPPING NEW MURAL CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY AND PLANET will soon adorn an exterior wall of the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara. While the painting just began on April 19th, local artists Adriana Arriaga and Claudia Borfiga will reveal the final work to the public during the Community Environmental Council’s Virtual Earth Day Festival this weekend. “We really wanted to emphasize the importance of community building and how we need each other to protect the earth,” shared Arriaga. “We really need each other to balance the work that we have to do to protect our earth, and most importantly to make sure that we protect it for the next generation, and teaching them those skills and the knowledge to protect the environment.” Titled Nurture Our Mother, Arriaga and Borfiga’s mural concept was chosen from over 25 submissions for the 2021 Earth Day Mural. Sponsored by CEC, MCASB, Paseo Nuevo, and other community partners, the call for entries asked Mural artists Claudia Borfiga and Adriana Arriaga in front of the then county artists to respond blank mural wall. to the 2021 Earth Day Festival theme of “climate leadership.” Arriaga and Borfiga, who met through a local organization called Friends of Public Art, decided to combine their unique skills and subject matters to realize a mural that would highlight our planet’s beauty and inspire viewers to protect it. Arriaga, who also goes by “adriana la artista,” is a born and raised Santa Barbara local. A contemporary Xicana graphic designer, Arriaga utilizes her experiences as a Xicana person and cultural references to connect with people through her art. With her work having been shown in exhibitions across the state, she has recently returned to her hometown after earning her bachelor’s degree in Art/Design studies with a minor in Chicano studies at San Jose State University, and her MFA from UC Davis. Borfiga, who moved to Santa Barbara from London four years ago, creates fine art screen prints. Her work predominantly centers on nature, excluding human elements like buildings and individuals. She also teaches local art workshops, and launched a group named Print Power to help people who have experienced trauma express themselves through printmaking. To date, the group has worked with local organizations Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA) and Domestic Violence Solutions. While the mural’s exact details will remain unknown until the artists and community volunteers finish painting it, Arriaga and Borfiga have expressed that it will celebrate Earth and its ecosystem as a collection of all its elements. Utilizing bright, bold colors, the mural will feature different creatures, plants, and human symbolism and imagery in order to emphasize the interconnectedness of our world and inspire viewers to take action and preserve it for generations to come. “[We’re] trying to pick things that are symbolic in ways that are native to us but translate as a message for looking out for the environment and looking out for the ecosystem,” explained Borfiga. “So really wanting to tell a story about how we have to care for all of these things and we have to consider all of these things. We’re lucky enough to live on it, so we have a duty to look after these things that are a part of Earth as well.” The mural, located on the MCASB exterior wall on the Paseo Nuevo Arts Terrace Parking Deck, will be revealed on April 24th during the CEC’s Virtual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival, which can be accessed at https://sbearthday.org. Extinct from the Earth: Captured in Art

ROWING UP SURROUNDED BY ART AND ANIMALS in Santa Barbara, Nina de Creeft Ward is the daughter of sculptors Jose and Alice de Creeft. She holds fond memories of caring for her family’s farm animals, pets, and learning about wildlife on school field trips to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Today, she continues to use her sculpture, drawing, and printmaking to cultivate appreciation for all animals, especially those that are extinct and endangered by human actions. “If you really appreciate something, you want other people to appreciate it too,” shared Ward. “And I really do appreciate animal life, and I hate to see people destroying nature and taking over natural space.” Ward attended Scripps College and earned her MFA from Claremont Graduate School of the Associated Colleges. Later, she moved to Chicago, where she enjoyed drawing animals at the local zoos. She started to think about the concept of extinction during one of these visits, coming across a display featuring a mirror coupled with the message, “You’re looking at the most dangerous animal alive.” “That was sort of a wake-up call,” she commented. She and her husband lived in Iowa for over 20 years before returning to Santa Barbara in 2001. Throughout her career, Ward has continued celebrating her passion for animals, portraying any and all creatures that spark artistic inspiration. This is especially true of hoofed animals, which Nina deCreeft Ward she can compare to the goats and horses of her childhood. This open approach, combined with the works she completes per the requests of family and friends, has resulted in a portfolio that encompasses the animal kingdom from beloved pets and farmyard companions to endangered and extinct members. “They say the kind of work you do shows what’s nearest to your heart, and I think animals are awfully important to me,” she said. Ward has held multiple shows focused on her work depicting endangered and extinct animals. The series consist of sculptures of fallen bodies of kudus, sable antelopes, rhinos, and Etching of Fakudu from zoo drawings by Nina deCreeft Ward blaauwboks, an antelope species that became extinct in the 19th century. Another work, titled E for Extinct, shows an old wooden desk, its open drawers overflowing with horns and hooves. As with all her sculptures, Ward strives to capture each animal’s unique attitude and gestures to make them feel alive to viewers. She largely utilizes soft slabs of clay, shaping them with piles of t-shirts before practicing raku firing or a smoking process to acquire the desired finish. She further uses block prints and ceramic slabs with rope impressions to create distinctive and deeply

meaningful textures. “I have the feeling that humans have affected a lot of animals and sort of encircled them and trapped them, so the rope seems to me to be somewhat appropriate,” explained Ward. Recently, Ward also honored animals native to the Santa Ynez Mountains with her 2020 Animal Ties exhibition at the South Willard Gallery in Los Angeles. Along with showcasing some older works, the exhibition featured her new series of delicately sculpted deer and coyotes resting against forested backdrops. Though smaller than previous sculptures, the pieces are a powerful reminder of the natural beauty surrounding Santa Barbara. Looking forward, Ward hopes that viewers enjoy her work and subsequently respect Buck and Doe by Nina deCreeft Ward animals more. She shared that while it’s not always overt, her work is largely channelled in the direction of Earth Day’s message. “It’s about appreciating the natural world and preserving it for our children and grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and not fracking and not doing things that spoil the water,” she By Nina deCreeft Ward said about Earth Day’s significance. “In general, having the least impact on the natural world. A Discussion with Organizers “Abolitionist struggle seeks to release the hold that the racial and racist carceral state has on our lives, both inside and outside the prison walls.” — Steve Wilson Most universities in other countries do not have their own police forces. Yet, in the US, university police forces are the norm. Why is this the case, and how are students and staff organizing against it? Abolitionist formations have expanded and deepened at universities and schools across the US in the past decade in response to police killings. As student workers and staff have organized against anti-Black racism and police violence, they have also articulated the relationship between policing and the neoliberalization of higher education, and the university’s role in tuition hikes, rising student debt, militarization, gentrification, and settler occupation. What does the project of police and prison abolition have to do with the project of the university and public institutions of higher education? How has the UC system been historically complicit in the expansion of mass incarceration, anti-Black policing, and the suppression of student protest? This panel features student and faculty organizers from the California Cops off Campus coalition. Join us as we discuss how university campaigns connected to broader struggles for abolition, and to learn more about the Cops Off Campus Coalition and how to get involved.
