Returns to Santa Barbara!

ASANTA BARBARA INSTITUTION, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is a perennial fan favorite. Featuring the world’s best films and videos on mountain subjects, the tour awes viewers with thrills and grandeur captured in exotic locations the world over. The Festival World Tour returns to Santa Barbara at the end of the month with two nights and two programs – on Tuesday, February 28th and Wednesday, March 1st at 7:30pm at the Arlington Theatre.

The show’s wide variety of film subjects – from extreme sports to mountain culture and environment –will amaze audiences. Curated and hosted by Roman Baratiak, A&L Associate Director Emeritus, audiences will view an entirely different program of films each night.

Program, Tuesday, February 28th

FLOW (2021, France, 5 minutes) Director: Maxime Moulin

Flow is an aerial and symphonic journey with skier Sam Favret, in the heart of a closed resort during the winter of 2021 –with doses of unreality, serenity, powerful skiing, and above all, the pleasure of rediscovering a playground in its wild state.

A BAFFIN VACATION (2022, Canada, 12 minutes) Director: Erik Boomer, Sarah McNair-Landry

Erik Boomer and Sarah McNair-Landry set off on a bold multi-sport 45-day expedition traveling through the remote landscape of Baffin Island in search of stunning cliffs to climb and unexplored rivers to kayak.

NUISANCE BEAR (2021, Canada, 14 minutes) Director: Gabriela Osio Vanden, Jack Weisman

Manitoba is famous as an international destination for photographing polar bears. We’ve seen the majestic images and classic wildlife series captured here, but what do these bears see of us? Through a

shift in perspective Nuisance Bear reveals an obstacle course of tourist paparazzi and wildlife officers whom bears must navigate during their annual migration.

WILD WATERS (TOUR EDIT) (2022, Switzerland, 45 minutes) Director: David Arnaud

Adventurer, competitor, daughter, friend, pioneer, hero, and badass human are all words used to describe French kayaker, Nouria Newman. In Wild Waters, we follow Nouria as she prepares to become the first female to run a 100-foot (30 m) waterfall; we watch her grow from a young, keen Olympic hopeful to one of the greatest kayakers of all times – male or female. However, running some of the world’s hardest whitewater isn't Nouria's biggest life challenge. Realizing that the expectations placed upon her as both an athlete and as a woman weigh heavily on her decisions and ambitions, she pushes back to make her own path. It is this central aspect of her life – this refusal to conform to others’ expectations – where Nouria is able to use kayaking as a way to transform into her truest self, and become a once-in-ageneration kayaker.

During the summer of 2021 some of the best highliners in the world head for the iconic Lapporten Gap just outside Abisko in Northern Sweden. The plan is to put up a two-kilometer-long highline 600 meters above the deck and then walk across. If they succeed it will be a new world record.

A young papaya farmer discovers the pure joy of climbing in the crystalline limestone sinkholes of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

ECO-HACK! (2022, United States, 17 minutes) Director: Josh Izenberg, Brett Marty Biologist Tim Shields has watched desert tortoise populations in the Mojave Desert plummet since the 1990s. The latest threat? Ballooning populations of ravens, thanks to increased human activity in the desert. Tired of taking notes on a quiet catastrophe, Tim quits traditional observational biology in exchange for direct intervention.

WOOD HOOD (2021 United States, 17 minutes) Director: Alexander Cullen DeVaughn is a 15-year-old kid from New York City who loves skateboarding and craves a "quiet place" to escape the chaos of his home, the city, and kids that steal from him. The film follows a weekendlong group camping trip, and as we weave between the city and the woods, a place that is unfamiliar and historically inaccessible to many, we witness the joy and growth that is possible when kids have an opportunity to find that "quiet place."

BALKAN EXPRESS (2022, Germany, 40 minutes) Director: Philipp Becker, Max Kroneck, Jochen Mesle, Johannes Müller German mountaineers Max Kroneck and Jochen Mesle book a one-way train ticket from Munich to Thessaloniki – and start their 2500-kilometre journey back home by bike and ski. They explore the mountains of the Balkans, looking for the most beautiful ski runs and sharing good times with locals along the way.

THE PROCESS (2021, United Kingdom, 15 minutes) Director: Matt Hardy, Matt Pycroft Tom Randall is a rock climber known for his commitment to training and the courageous and, at times, outrageous challenges he sets himself. This time,

Tom has set his mind on becoming proficient and efficient in the sport of fell running. He has a madcap idea to try and complete the previously un-attempted Lakes Classic Rock Challenge and a Bob Graham link-up in 24 hours. That’s 15 classic Lakeland rock climbs, 42 summits, and 142 kilometres. What lengths is he willing to go to achieve his goal and when is enough, enough? At this watershed moment of reckoning around equity and inclusion for the industry, Sheri’s life story will both warm audiences, and ask them to grapple with important questions about who belongs.

In the city of Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, Rafael Bridi attempts the highest highline record in the world by setting his line above the clouds.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour was born from Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival which began in Banff, Alberta. In 1976 a tight-knit group of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts conceived The Banff Festival of Mountaineering Films. This was a one-day gathering that became the renowned international Festival it is today. Over 30 years ago, Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival began an outreach program to bring the Festival to other communities. This has become known as Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Like the first festival in Banff, the tour began small, in three cities across Canada. Angela Bassett’s incredible legacy

Bassett to Receive SBIFF Montecito Award

WITH OVER A HUNDRED CREDITS TO HER NAME, Angela Bassett’s acting career is the definition of prolific. In addition to having received multiple nominations and awards, she has made history this month by after becoming the first actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to receive an Oscar nomination for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

For her years of powerful and memorable performances, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival will present Bassett with the Montecito Award, which is given to a person in the entertainment industry who has made a great contribution to film. The tribute will take place on Thursday, February 9th at 8pm at the Arlington Theatre.

“Ms. Bassett has had an illustrious career as an actor, director, and producer and Wakanda Forever reminds us why she’s so greatly revered,” said Roger Durling, SBIFF executive director in a statement.

“She’s regal, fierce, and commanding as Queen Ramonda. We bow down.”

For almost four decades, Bassett has carried a dignified aura with her on the screen, first garnering acclaim for her roles in Boyz n the Hood and Malcom X. She received her first Academy Award nomination for her breakthrough role as Tina Turner in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It. Thanks to Bassett, some of history’s most iconic and noteworthy Black women have had their stories shared on the silver screen.

Born in New York City, Bassett moved with her family to St. Petersburg, Florida when she was four years old. Her experiences in her own life were not that far from those of Civil Rights leaders she would eventually portray: Bassett was bussed to a middle school outside of her neighborhood because she started in 1970, the year before schools were integrated in Florida.

Bassett then enrolled in Boca Ciega High School, where she became the first AfricanAmerican student to join the National Honor Society. Her academic success carried her to Yale University, where she received a B.A. in African American Studies and an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama.

As Queen Ramonda of Wakanda, Bassett’s portrayal of grief over the loss of her son was palpable. In her character’s mourning, she provided audiences with a

That sense of tenacity is one of the landmark features of any of her roles from a standout performance as Amanda Waller in the forgettable 2011 Green Lantern movie, to the immediately iconic Marie Leveau in 2013’s American Horror Story: Coven Bassett is always a stunning and believable actor.

“The audience is family to me, and theater is sacred to me,” Bassett said to IndieWire in November 2022. “And so I always think about how it’s going to last. It’s gonna last on celluloid or digital or whatever you want to call it. It is going to last when I’m long gone.”

Guillermo del Toro To Host Screening and Q&A for Local Students

MUSIC, QUESTIONS, AND LAUGHTER will fill the Arlington Theatre this February when thousands of local students participate in the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies. A festival highlight for 20 years, this educational program invites elementary-aged students from across Santa Barbara County to attend a private film screening and Q&A with critically-acclaimed filmmakers.

“This year we’re super excited to announce that Guillermo del Toro, the Academy Award-winning director hailing from Mexico, will be the marquee event for third graders and sixth graders with his Pinocchio,” announced SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling at SBIFF’s January 18th press conference. “It just shows you the trajectory of Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies — we started at the Museum of Natural History with 250 kids, and now we’re up to 5,000 students and a filmmaker of the caliber of Guillermo del Toro.”

Named for cinematographer Mike DeGruy, Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies prioritizes reaching students from underserved communities and Title I elementary schools. Approximately 30 schools from across Santa Barbara County participate, bringing thousands of students to the Arlington Theatre for an unforgettable afternoon celebrating the art of film and learning directly from industry professionals.

Ultimately, SBIFF hopes that this program inspires the next generation of filmmakers. Students view an Academy Award-nominated animated feature before experiencing an in-person Q&A with the film’s director.

“The questions asked during the Q&A by our Executive Director, Roger Durling, are all questions sent in by the students, so they are getting to hear their questions read and answered by some of the top filmmakers in the industry,” said SBIFF Education Manager Claire Waterhouse. “We want to give underserved students access to films and provide them with an understanding of how they are made and also show them that film is something they can pursue. We want students to know that they can be filmmakers too and that it is never out of reach.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is an unusual twist on a familiar classic. Set in Mussolini’s Italy, the film utilizes music and comedy to explore serious topics such as father-son relationships, war, morality, and ultimately, mortality. Viewers are left with a moving story and a beautiful work of art that demonstrates the full potential of stop-motion animation.

Bookworm Corner: The Invention of Hugo Cabret

ROCKETS LANDING IN THE EYE OF THE MAN IN THE MOON, a mysterious automaton, and other wondrous creations from the mind of renowned filmmaker Georges Méliès adorn the gorgeously illustrated pages of The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Published with the subhead “A Novel in Words and Pictures” in 2008, this beautiful adventure tale became the first novel to win the Caldecott Medal, which is typically reserved for picture books. With over half of the book relying on intricate drawings to further its story, however, young readers would be hard pressed to find a novel that better understands the inspirational power of images and film.

Set in the 1930s, The Invention of Hugo Cabret follows Hugo, a young orphan who lives in a Parisian train station, secretly tending to the station clocks. One day, he is caught stealing gears and equipment from a toy booth manned by an old man named Georges. Georges confiscates Hugo’s notebook filled with detailed illustrations of an automaton. With the help of Georges’ goddaughter, Isabelle, Hugo begins working at the toy booth, hoping to earn back his notebook.

Through a series of flashbacks and delicate drawings, readers learn that Hugo’s father died in a museum fire while attempting to fix the automaton portrayed in the notebook’s drawings. Now, Hugo is determined to finish his father’s job and reveal what the automaton was trying to draw. This adventure is quickly connected to the story of silent filmmaker Georges Méliès, who is ultimately revealed to be Isabelle’s godfather.

Ideal for students in the fourth grade and up, The Invention of Hugo Cabret epitomizes historical fiction’s power to enchant and inform readers. While Hugo’s story is fiction, elements of truth, including actual photographs from silent films, educate students about the early days of cinematography. The details about Méliès’ life are also rooted in truth, as Méliès actually did face bankruptcy and a new life as a toy stand owner before achieving lasting public acclaim. This blend of history, art, and storytelling provides endless opportunities for students to explore how the movies they know and love today differ from the special effects of the early 20th century.

Selznick’s black-and-white illustrations transform The Invention of Hugo Cabret into a reading experience that imitates the movie-going experience. Clips of dialogue and written narrative interrupt pages of sketches and images that convey profound emotion, suspense, and intrigue. The result is a charming story that celebrates the creativity of cinema, making it a meaningful read to prepare for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s return next week.

SBIFF to Open with World Premiere of Miranda’s Victim

APOWERFUL STORY OF JUSTICE AND COURAGE will kick off the 38th Santa Barbara International Film Festival when the Arlington Theatre hosts the sold-out world premiere of Miranda’s Victim on Wednesday, February 8th.

With a star-studded cast including Abigail Breslin, Luke Wilson, Andy García, Donald Sutherland, and more, the film chronicles the story of Patricia “Trish” Weir, who was raped by Ernesto Miranda in 1963. Miranda’s subsequent Supreme Court trial led to the creation of the Miranda warning, permanently altering America’s law enforcement landscape.

“The thing that grabbed me is how difficult was it for a woman in 1963, what were all the obstacles, what were all the constraints?” explained director Michelle Danner in an interview with VOICE. “What was it like to live in Phoenix, Arizona in 1963, to come forward and speak the truth and then confront your feelings? I just feel that it’s such a particular kind of courage that really spoke to me.”

A longtime lover of crime stories, Danner jumped at the chance to tell Weir’s story. The founder of the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, her past films include The Runner and Bad Impulse

Spanning from 1963 to the mid-1970s, Miranda’s Victim outlines how Weir’s life was overturned amidst her decision to confront her attacker. The film is centered on Weir’s

perspective, incorporating information about America’s legal system to show the origins of the Miranda warning.

“I was very surprised that the story hadn’t been told how the Miranda rights came about,” said Danner. “From the very beginning, everybody that we went out to, all the actors, agreed and felt that this was an important story. I’m hoping audiences will come out with the fact that this was an important story and ruling.”

Danner’s mind quickly turned to Abigail Breslin, best known for her performance in Little Miss Sunshine, to play the role of Weir. Her casting then took on a personal note as she was inspired to work with her mother’s favorite actor, Donald Sutherland, and one of her former acting students, Enrique Murciano.

In a fortunate turn of fate, Danner was met with an eager “yes” from the majority of her first choices for the film’s actors, including Josh Bowman, Emily VanCamp, Andy García, Ryan Phillippe, Nolan Gould, Dan Lauria, and Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Chief Justice Earl Warren.

The real Patricia Weir also has a cameo in the film as a wedding guest. Danner shared that she told Weir that her story will continue to inspire and help people today.

“I thanked her for her courage and I told her that I believe she’s going to help people because people have to be reminded,” said Danner. “Aside from the fact that it’s a story that people don’t know about, it’s a beautiful story about courage.”

Danner added that she feels Miranda’s Victim will especially resonate with audiences in light of the #MeToo movement and the difficulties sexual assault survivors continue to face when coming forward today. The film’s release also precedes the 60th anniversary of Weir’s assault.

Hallelujah! – The Master Chorale is Reborn

LAST WEEKEND’S FIRST PERFORMANCES by the Santa Barbara Master Chorale in nearly two years, Haydn’s monumental oratorio, The Creation, revealed an organization that has completely reinvented itself. Sunday’s performance, abetted by a crackerjack professional chamber orchestra, was first-rate. Shimmering with collective synergy, the Master Chorale is smaller now, leaner, and well prepared. The result, a handsome realization of Haydn’s gloriously imaginative, colorful, and complicated masterpiece.

The Master Chorale has snagged a worthy new Artistic Director and Conductor for its 39th season, David Lozano Torres. His résumé reveals a broad conducting interest and capability, easily visible at last Sunday’s performance. Neither faux bravado nor maudlin angst clutter Torres’ conducting dance card. Rather, his is a solidly dependable, focused, and importantly, calm helm. It’s a strategy, together with clearly masterful preparation skills, that has elevated the Master Chorale’s artistic ambitions. The results of Torres’ leadership Sunday were magical; a performance that was as light on its musical feet as it was powerful and nuanced. Torres clarified and fine-tuned Haydn’s complicated narrative patchwork stitched together from Genesis, the Book of Psalms, and Milton’s Paradise Lost with admirable skill and finesse.

Soloists, soprano Christine Hollinger, tenor Lorenzo Johnson, Jr., and baritone Matthew Peterson sang the English language text with clarity of diction and unanimity of style. The Master Chorale enjoyed excellent ensemble balance and blend, spot-on pitch, clean articulation of difficult fugal and contrapuntal passagework, and above all energy. Considering the long hiatus before rehearsals resumed this past fall for The Creation, and acknowledging

this is a community choir, the quality of performance on Sunday represented an important artistic transformation for the group; musical light years now separate then from now.

Haydn (1732-1809) composed The Creation at the zenith of his career, 1797-1798, after two wildly successful trips to London to premiere his series of symphonies commissioned by the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. He is known to have heard Handel’s narrative oratorio, Israel in Egypt during one of those trips. Inspired, Haydn decided to compose a similarly large canvas for chorus, orchestra, and soloists, this time with no less a narrative story than the origin of the universe, and the creation of life on planet earth.

The orchestral opening, Representation of Chaos, is a test of conducting stamina and pacing, that can make or break the spell of the work. In unskilled hands, Haydn’s carefully imagined, orchestral imagery for the creation of the universe can be lost. Torres understood the task and followed the composer’s orchestral roadmap clearly, beginning with a tasteful, Late Classical Period notion of the Big Bang chord which opens the work and launches Haydn’s epic journey.

Throughout its three sections and nearly two-hours, The Creation is bejeweled with several orchestral interludes, each a wealth of musical imagination, energy, and compositional genius. The Master Chorale Orchestra, made up of some of the region’s best professionals, performed these gems and additional colorfully orchestrated moments that pop up throughout the oratorio with tight dispatch and tasteful period stylings. Special salutations to timpanist Jonathan Palmquist and contrabassoonist Emilia Banninger.

Beginning with his first aria Rolling in foaming billows, and continuing through the entirety of his performance, Peterson engaged, and was engaging.

Pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at UCSB, tenor Lorenzo Johnson, Jr.’s mellifluous voice and malleable temperament as archangel Uriel, master of knowledge and archangel of wisdom, bound Haydn’s complicated narrative journey together nicely from his first aria, Now vanished by the holy beams,

through various connective recitatives and a brief, colorful stint as Adam, culminating in the radiant aria, And God saw everything that he had made

Santa Barbara-based soprano Christine Hollinger’s delicate voice proved a good match for her role as the guardian of Israel, archangel Gabriel. Projection initially a problem, Hollinger found her acoustic niche in the large sanctuary by her second aria, Now robed in cool refreshing green. Her duo as Eve to Lorenzo Johnson’s Adam, By thee with grace, and her trios with Johnson and Peterson, In fairest raiment now, and From thee, O Lord, doth all proceed, confirmed her collaborative skills and sense of balance, tone, and color.

for festival audiences encountering its international programming, part of a web of a rich variety of features and short films, from over 43 countries. The film lineup highlights the global reach of the festival, showing that creativity is ever present and offering distinct perspectives of society, family culture, and political spheres.

For the first time, SBIFF will be offering an International Director’s panel, scheduled for Sunday, February 12th at the Arlington, and free of charge. The panel will be comprised of helmers yet to be determined but mostly drafted from the filmmakers of the Oscar-nominated foreign films, who very well may include: Jerzy Skolimowski, who directed the celebrated EO, a dramatic tale of a doneky’s journeys, from Poland; Lukas Dhont, who directed Close from Belgium; director/ producer Santiago Mitre for Argentina, 1985 a historical drama; Irish writer-director Colm Bairéad for the emotionally impactful

Irish Gaelic language film with subtitles, An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) which will be screened at the Festival on both February 15th and 16th; and German director Edward Berger’s vivid re-make and expansion of All Quiet on the Western Front, one of the most accomplished war movies of the past few years. Panelist appearances will be confirmed closer to the event.

Many tightly focused international stories will appear in the Animated Shorts programs with artistic works from Iran (Broken); France (Christopher at Sea); South Korea (Epicenter); the Netherlands (It’s Nice in Here); Serbia (Money and Happiness, directed by Ana Nedeljković and Nikola Majdak; and Oskar from Canada as well as Recontres Nocturnes Silencleuse (See You in My Dreams). Additional foreign titles also can be found in the Narrative Shorts 1, When Life Feels Out of Control; the Narrative Shorts 2, When a Moment Changes Everything; Narrative Shorts 3, In the Hope of Love and Connection; and Narrative Shorts 4, The Fear & Truths We Avoid programs. Titles chosen include screenings of short narratives from Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, France, Colombia, Norway, and Sweden, among others.

Additional highlights will most likely be found among a variety of full-length feature titles and plot lines, including from the Nordic based film sidebar which includes films from Sweden with the world premiere of Bullets (a hardhitting drama that grapples with the importance of being allowed

to remain a child) and Second Act (a story about friendship and hope). From Denmark, Fathers & Mothers and Tove’s Room are programmed; and three features from Iceland look intriguing including A Letter from Helga, and Summerlight... and Then Comes the Night (Directed by Elfar Aðalsteins) and Woman at Sea. Other titles that look promising include The Chambermaid from Slovakia, The Hotel from Hong Kong, Ibizia Blue from Spain, Retreat from Switzerland, and another feature from Ireland, Lakelands

Also, look for the documentary about the masterful filmmaker from Germany, Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer from director Thomas von Steinaecker on February 9th and 12th, a project that cannot be missed. Of course there will be many more thrilling discoveries to be made on the fly during the festival for audiences who will no doubt will find amazing filmmaker perspectives of foreign lands and interpersonal or political dramas.

Harbor Dredging Begins

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29TH - The blue light beaming in Montecito Saturday night was for the fifth anniversary of the Bucket Brigade, a non-profit that has been helping with volunteer labor for those in need after a crisis, and also building community projects such as walking trails.

Santa Barbara Features Local Talent Hits the Silver Screen

POIGNANT, POWERFUL, AND HISTORICALLY POETIC, photographer Roman Vishniac’s images captured the resilience and culture of Jewish communities leading up to and aftermath of the horrors of World War II. Now, Vishniac’s work as well as his relationship with his daughter, Santa Barbara resident Mara Vishniac Kohn, will take center stage when local director Laura Bialis hosts the world premiere of her new documentary, Vishniac, at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Vishniac will show at 2:40pm on Friday, February 17th and at 8:40pm on Saturday, February 18th at the Metro 4 Theatre, Auditorium #3.

MAUREEN BHAROOCHA, having her film, The Prank, shown at the 38th Santa Barbara International Film Festival closes the loop on a full circle moment. Bharoocha, a Santa Barbara local, fondly recalls taking in SBIFF programming as a child where events like the animated shorts started her love for film.

“The seeds were planted for me as a kid just from that,” explained Bharoocha.

Bharoocha was a student at Bishop Diego High School, and spent her years practicing theater, acting, and photography—all of which she says contributed to her developing her directorial voice. She spent much of her adolescence with friends and family organizing plays and making home videos at spots around town. Bharoocha studied film at Boston University and began working in the industry, including segment direction for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and shorts for Sprinkles Cupcakes.

The Prank, starring Rita Moreno, Ramona Young, and Connor Kalopsis, is a dark comedy in which two students take revenge on a teacher by accusing her of murder on social media. Blending comedy and seriousness allowed Bharoocha to have the creative flexibility to create something she refers to as “visually fun,” and offer homage to genre movies. Working with experienced stars like Moreno and Keith David made for an exciting directorial experience, as she got to witness them “having fun going toe-to-toe with each other.” She also highlighted the film’s score, which features a 16-string live orchestra.

“I just want people to enjoy it,” shared Bharoocha in reference to what viewing experience she hopes to offer festival goers. “I hope they enjoy the ride.”

The Prank will screen at 1:20pm on Thursday, February 16th at the Fiesta 5 Theatre, Auditorium #4, and at 8:20pm on Friday, February 17th at the Metro 4 Theatre, Auditorium #2.

A San Marcos High School alumna, Bialis’ film career is inextricably linked to Santa Barbara. She studied filmmaking at USC, where she created a short film about a student from Carpinteria who was accomplished in sports and music while being blind and physically disabled. The film screened at the 1997 SBIFF, where Bialis met Holocaust survivor and Santa Barbara resident Judy Meisel, who became the subject of her next film.

“It’s funny, the Santa Barbara Film Festival kind of launched my career,” said Bialis.

Bialis went on to create additional documentaries, including Refusenik and View from the Bridge – Stories from Kosovo. Upon moving back to Santa Barbara after living in Israel for eight years, she grew motivated to create a film about Roman Vishniac.

She began interviewing Mara Vishniac Kohn, who unfortunately passed away while Bialis was creating the film. Through their conversations, Bialis realized that any film on Vishniac had to include Mara’s story and her relationship with her father.

“Every week, I’d go over there and it just became this really intimate conversation,” explained Bialis. “She really opened up to me. At the beginning, it was sort of the story she had always told, and then as we became closer friends... I started really cracking into the story.”

In creating Vishniac, Bialis realized that many of the issues prevalent in Vishniac’s lifetime are emerging today in a different form. The result is a thoughtful documentary that will offer intimate insight into both his and Mara’s experiences. To learn more visit www.sbiff.org

Housing Market Swoon – Part II

SENTIMENTS, privately‐owned housing starts were down in December at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,382,000. This is 1.4 percent below the revised November estimate of 1,401,000 and is 21.8 percent below the December 2021 rate of 1,768,000.

An estimated 1,553,300 housing units were started in 2022. This is 3.0 percent below the 2021 figure of 1,601,000, so housing construction is also in a “swoon.”

And existing-home sales faded for the eleventh straight month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.02 million. Existing-home sales totaled 5.03 million in 2022, down 17.8 percent from 2021, as last year’s rapidly escalating interest rate environment weighed on the residential real estate market.

6.15 percent as of January 19th, according to data released by Freddie Mac. That’s down 18 basis points from the previous week — one basis point is equal to one hundredth of a percentage point.

Last week, the 30-year was at 6.33 percent. Last year the 30-year was averaging at 3.56 percent. Rates are now at the lowest level since September 2022.

It is causing a surge in mortgage applications, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Joel Kan, MBA’s Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist, said “This week’s builder sentiment index from the NAHB reflected an improving outlook and increased buyer traffic, as mortgage rates have backed off from recent highs. The housing market is still in need of more starter and entry-level homes, especially when current demographic trends point to the potential for more younger households to enter homeownership in the near future.

Mortgage rates should continue to decline, aided by homebuilders who are now offering initial interest rates as slow a four percent to entice buyers. They can do this by buying down a fixed rate and adding its costs to the purchase price, or offering shorter term fixed rates or even an adjustable rate loan.

Will this end the housing “swoon?” There is lots of pent-up demand, and we still have a housing shortage.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA BARBARA DECLARING ITS INTENTION TO MODIFY THE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT PLAN OF THE SANTA BARBARA SOUTH COAST TOURISM IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT.

WHEREAS, on May 17, 2022, the City Council of the City of Santa Barbara (“City Council”) adopted Resolution No. 22-038 adopting the Management District Plan and renewing the Santa Barbara South Coast Tourism Improvement District (SBSCTBID); and

WHEREAS, the Property and Business Improvement District Law of 1994, Streets and Highways Code §36600 et seq., allows the City to modify the Management District Plan (MDP) at the request of the owners’ association; and WHEREAS, the SBSCTBID owners’ association, Visit Santa Barbara (VSB), has requested modification of the MDP. The Vow from Hiroshima: Resilience of the Hibakusha Women

THE MEMORIES, STORIES, AND VOICES of those lost in the 1945 atomic bombs live through Setsuko Thurlow, one of the last surviving victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ever since losing her classmates and loved ones, Thurlow has dedicated her life to nuclear disarmament, pledging to ensure that this tragedy never happens again.

Now, Thurlow’s powerful testimony is documented in The Vow from Hiroshima. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a nonprofit based in Santa Barbara whose mission is to create a peaceful world, free of nuclear weapons, will screen The Vow from Hiroshima at Santa Barbara Community College Fé Bland Forum on Friday, February 10th from 6 to 7:30pm. Director Susan Strickler and Producer Mitchie Takeuchi will join the screening afterward for a Q&A about the film.

“It’s very special when people sit in a room together for any film and have that experience together,” said Strickler. “Some activists start off their talks by thanking people for being brave enough to be willing to do a deep dive into the subject matter. We also ask that people not walk out the door and forget about it.”

The Vow from Hiroshima follows Thurlow’s fearless activism with Hibakusha Stories and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) as she shares her story around the world to raise public awareness about the dangers of nuclear warfare. Thurlow was only a 13 years-old when she looked outside and saw a blinding flash of light––the first detonation of nuclear weapons in warfare. Although she miraculously escaped death when a soldier pulled her unconscious body out of a burning building, Thurlow awoke to a horrific nightmare. In the film, Strickler’s compassionate lens lets Thurlow’s story speak for itself, carefully illustrating the insurmountable loss through artwork and family portraits.

“It’s almost impossible to hear [Thurlow] speak and not be emotionally moved,” shared Strickler. “She’s not only a great speaker, but she’s also a great listener. I think that a lot of students who hear her story are so moved because she was close to their age [when the bomb struck].”

The film also explores Thurlow’s friendship with second-generation survivor Mitchie Takeuchi, demonstrating the resiliency of hibakusha, the survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima. As the child of Hiroshima survivors, Takeuchi knew little about her family’s history because of the emotional trauma that silenced her mother from speaking about such horrors. However, Thurlow’s courageous humanitarianism inspired Takeuchi to reconcile with her family’s complicated history and finally tell their story. In an intimate portrait of healing from generational trauma, The Vow from Hiroshima intertwines these two accounts with care to create a touching film about emotional bonds.

“So many of the people who are pursuing nuclear disarmament are women, and they’re powerhouses,” said Strickler. “We wanted to show [Takeuchi’s] growing understanding of her mother, and I think that part really pulls on a lot of heartstrings…It’s a classic story of realizing the valuable lessons that our parents were trying to impart to us after they are no longer with us.”

Strickler ultimately hopes that viewers consider the consequences of nuclear warfare and engage with Thurlow’s call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Even though the issue may be intimidating or uncomfortable at first glance, Strickler believes that it is never too late to begin advocating for justice.

“Until the public engages, there’s only so much that civil society and diplomats can do,” said Strickler. “If [nuclear warfare] is just an abstraction, people can keep putting

it on the back burner. We want people to see our film because once people are moved, then things happen.”

“It’s one thing to sit through a discussion about [atomic warfare],” added Strickler.

“It’s another thing to keep it with you, think about it, and talk about it with other people so we can continue to build on this movement.”

Regenerate: THE WORKS OF J. BRADLEY GREER & LYNDA WEINMAN

AS TECHNOLOGY GROWS AND IMPACTS THE WORLD

AROUND US, people turn to the natural world for reprieve and inspiration. Regenerate, the latest exhibition at Sullivan Goss, is bursting with figures that reference but also morph natural figures, shaping them into something that are as familiar as they are unrecognizable. Featuring the artworks of J. Bradley Greer and local artist and SBIFF Board of Directors President Lynda

Weinman, Regenerate asks viewers to consider their position in between nature and technology and if these things are as far apart from each other as one might initially believe.

“It all has to do with biomorphics— shapes from nature,” said Gallery Director Jeremy Tessmer.

The shapes and visual motifs Greer uses are similar throughout his work. Kaleidoscopic flowers, circles, and dotted lines populate his spreads but manage to avoid feeling repetitive due to the intricate background details, textures, and layering he creates. Some even feature exaggerated silhouettes of bodies with giant legs and tiny torsos. Others have bodies with long, curvy arms that seem to sway despite their fixed position on the canvas.

“I enjoy working texturally,” Greer said. “I’m very into scratching and scraping.”

Though these pieces may be inspired by the natural world, they appear to be anything but—with his new work sourced from doodles in his personal sketchbooks and his garden rather than trying to capture poses from clothing catalogs, Greer has been able to find fun in his creative practice again, and now finds himself excited to get his ideas onto a canvas.

“It’s kind of the antithesis to my previous portraits,” said Greer about his recent creations. “It was tedious work. I found myself having to spend a lot of time in my yard.”

With Greer’s interest in biological shapes and forms, it comes as no surprise that Tessmer was able to draw a connection between his and Weiniman’s work. The pieces in Regenerate speak so strongly in conversation with each other that Weinman’s vases look as if they could have been treasures discovered in one of Greer’s paintings. Each remarkable in their own right, these pieces have

developed a beautiful relationship that comes from witnessing them in such close proximity.

“I had been thinking, ‘Who can I put this with?’ and it was serendipitous when I realized how well they work together,” said Tessmer.

Layered, colorful, and metallic, some of Weinman’s pieces look like fresh pieces of bismuth that have been mined straight from the earth, while some look like otherworldly clams tucked inside a section of a coral reef. Others still reference intricately woven baskets.

As one of the world’s leading technology and software entrepreneurs, Lynda Weinman spent over two decades authoring books that provide tutorials for web graphics and design, as well as programs like Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

“When I was a 14-yearold high school student, ceramics were my refuge,” shared Weinman in her blog, Claybottress. “I realized then, as I do now, that ceramics had therapeutic powers over me.”

Weinman is also the founder of lynda.com, a now-defunct online resource containing courses and tutorials for creative and business skills. After selling lynda.com to LinkedIn in 2015, she rekindled a lifelong passion for pottery and ceramics.

“I was no longer the person who had created a company, or taught computer graphics,

or had earned awards or accolades. I was completely naked in my lack of knowledge,” said Weinman in a blog post.

Typical applications of 3D printing technologies generally require people to steer clear of things like gaps in the figures or crooked lines. Prints are often rigid, structural, and stiff. However, in Weinman’s work, she seems to reject that expectation, and instead emphasize elements like curves, circles, spheres. Even for printed pieces that collapse or fail, Weinman will sometimes keep them to glaze for a series.

There’s a comforting playfulness in Greer’s and Weinman’s works. Both of them arriving at these new modes of creating after having established styles and practices creates a sense of hope for viewers that they can find life and joy if they search for it. Sometimes, all it takes is a look outside.

$265,000 to Mission Scholars from Grant Matching

DONORS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE posed by Tim and Ginny Bliss—if Mission Scholars were able to raise $75,000 from other sources, then the Bliss Family Foundation would match it dollar for dollar. The Bliss family offered a similar deal last year, where they offered $50,000 in a matching grant that raised $172,000 for Mission Scholars. This year, local community members donated $190,000, which equates to a total of $265,000 raised.

“We are honored and proud to be part of Mission Scholars,” said Tim Bliss. “They are making such a tremendous difference in these young people's lives.”

Mission Scholars, a program that helps create equity in college admissions for high-achieving, low-income students has a near-perfect record of four-year college attendance. Additionally, they have a record of assisting students gain scholarships that have covered up to 85 percent of the cost of attendance—something critical for the low-income population that Mission Scholars seeks to serve.

According to Mission Scholars’ Executive Director, Cassie Lancaster, this support will allow them to expand their service area down into Carpinteria, devote more time to helping the Scholars find summer jobs and internships, and support students through College Success programs. Lancaster also shared that Mission Scholars students are currently lining up paid summer internships with General Motors, Electronic Arts, Khan Academy, The Salvation Army, among others. www.missionscholars.org.

LUIS RAMIREZ has been named the new Public Education Manager for WM, formerly Waste Management. Born and raised in Santa Ynez, Ramirez will be in charge of public education on recycling programs throughout the region. Specifically, he will act as the public liaison in educating community members on new policies and WM’s transitions to better recycling practices, including the recent creation of an organic waste program and partnering with local organizations and partners involved in Food Recovery and Resource Recovery. Ramirez is an alumnus of Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, and he and his wife are now raising their two children on the Central Coast.

Sunday, February 5th!

ENJOY FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY ADVENTURES at over 30 museums across Southern California when SoCal Museums hosts its Museums Freefor-All day on Sunday, February 5th! Participating museums celebrate and share a broad range of subjects, including art, cultural heritage, film, natural history, and science.

Local participating museums include: Museum of Ventura County, Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and the Santa Paula Art Museum. VITA Tax Help for Mid-Low Income County Residents

TAX SEASON IS HERE and so are resources to help low-to-moderateincome Santa Barbara County residents, thanks to United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).

From February 6th to April 18th, free tax filing services will be provided at multiple locations county-wide by VITA volunteers for local residents making $67,000 or less annually. These volunteers are IRS-certified and will provide free basic income tax preparation with electronic filing for individuals who qualify. Last year, VITA volunteers filed 2,784 tax returns.

Make sure to bring a copy of prior year federal and state tax returns for years to be done, a copy of a photo ID (driver’s license or passport) and your spouse’s if filing jointly, and a copy of a social security card or Individual Taxpayer ID Numbers for each family member. Nominations Open for 80th Person of the Year Awards

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS MADE A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE in the Santa Barbara community? Nominations are now open for the Santa Barbara Foundation’s 80th Person of the Year awards. All community members are invited to nominate individuals, couples, or families by 5pm on February 24th.

The Person of the Year awards recognizes those who have significantly contributed to the community’s quality of life, shown an exemplary sense of commitment, or displayed great kindness, generosity, or innovation in Santa Barbara. Nominees are determined by community members’ submissions.

Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative Welcomes New Board Members

COMMITTED TO UPHOLDING THE ARTS in our community, the Santa Barbara Arts Collective has welcomed four new board members to help kick off 2023: Sharyn Main, Vanae Rivera, Dug Uyesaka, and Joseph Velasco. Together, they will contribute meaningful experience and connections. www.sbartscollaborative.org

SHARYN MAIN has given back to regional nonprofits for close to 40 years. Currently working as a consultant for nonprofit organizations and community groups, Main’s past experiences have included serving as Senior Director of Community Investments at the Santa Barbara Foundation. She also helped develop the Community Environmental Council’s new Climate Resilience program. Beyond her nonprofit work, Main performs in local theater and dance, appearing on local stages for over 20 years.

VANAE RIVERA is a skilled tattoo artist and the owner of Mary Tattoo. A self-taught artist Rivera, works with ink, acrylic, pencil, block-printing, assemblage, and more. Rivera has organized many beloved local art shows, pop-ups, and community curated events since 2007.

DUG UYESAKA has been an active member of Santa Barbara’s arts community since the 1970’s. Currently, he teaches art at Laguna Blanca School, with his past experiences including teaching at the Center for Life Long Learning and acting as a SB County Arts Commissioner from 2007-2019. His work was highlighted at the Westmont Ridley Tree Museum of Art in 2016 in the show “Long Story Short.” Uyesaka is a recipient of the The Arts Fund’s Individual Artist Award for Assemblage and Collage, and Laguna Blanca’s Faculty Excellence Award for the Middle School.

JOSEPH VELASCO teaches English with an emphasis in Ethnic Studies at Santa Barbara High School. A UCSB alumnus, Velasco holds a rich background in theatre, co-founding the BOXTALES Theatre Company in 1994 after serving as Resident Director of renowned Chicano theater company, El Teatro Campesino, for a year. He is also the former Artistic Director for City at Peace Santa Barbara. Velasco continues to perform and be a storyteller in his free time.

Tanja Heitman Named Assistant SB County Executive Officer

TANJA HEITMAN, Chief Probation Officer, has been appointed to serve as an Assistant County Executive Officer. In this role, she will oversee and coordinate the County’s health and human service and public safety departments. Heitman has served as Santa Barbara County’s Chief Probation Officer since December 2017, previously working as a juvenile institutions officer at the Santa Barbara Juvenile Hall. Over the past 30 years, she has worked extensively with local government and community groups for the planning and implementation of realignment and juvenile justice reforms in Santa Barbara County. www.countyofsb.org

San Marcos HS Athletic Director Retires

ABE JAHADHMY, San Marcos High School’s Athletic Director, has retired after devoting 35 years to the school’s athletic programming. He began coaching the school’s soccer team in 1987, winning five Channel League Championships over the course of 14 years as well as a CIF Championship in 1998. Jahadhmy became Athletic Director in 2004, going on to oversee fundraising drives that supported the improvement of school facilities, including a turf field in the stadium, track renovation, sand volleyball courts, and more. Jahadhmy was inducted into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame in 2019. The Athletic Director position will now go to longtime coach and Activities Director Aaron Solis. www.sanmarcos.sbunified.org
