SBNC is Santa Barbara's largest safety-net healthcare provider, serving over 20,000 unique patients each year across all our clinics. Last fiscal year, we provided 88,000 billable visits, and throughout our history, we have delivered nearly one million patient visits-an extraordinary milestone that reflects both our capacity and the growing need in our community. Many of our patients face significant barriers to care: 20% are uninsured, and 80 percent rely on Medi-Cal, Medicare, or private insurance. Seventy-Six Trombones and All that Jazz to Light Up SB Symphony’s New Year’s Eve Concert

T IS SAID BROADWAY ALWAYS WEARS A SMILE, and so will the Granada Theatre as it welcomes hundreds of music lovers for the Santa Barbara Symphony’s annual New Year’s Eve concert. Led by guest conductor Stuart Malina and starring soprano Madison Claire Parks, the night will ring in 2026 with champagne, laughter, and a lineup of hit show tunes and songs from the silver screen.

Malina is celebrating his 25th season as the Music Director and conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. He has made a name for himself in the realms of classical music and Broadway, having won the 2003 Tony award for orchestration along with rockstar Billy Joel for the musical Movin’ Out.

“This New Year’s Eve, on the brink of our nation’s 250th birthday, we salute two great American contributions to the world of music,” said guest conductor Stuart Malina to VOICE. “The composers of Hollywood and Broadway are among our country’s greatest creative artists. Flower Girl Bodega: SB’s Newest, Sunny Corner Shop

ELCOMING ALL WITH A ROTATING RAINBOW OF PRODUCE, flowers, and homemade meals, Flower Girl Bodega has recently blossomed at the former site of Elizabeth Gordon Gallery on Gutierrez St. Headed up by local culinary creative Emma West Roldan, the shop embodies and elevates all that a traditional corner store has to offer with a fun focus on vegetarian and specialty items.

“It’s vegetarian because of our resources here. I feel like I have really strong connections with a lot of local growers and farmers,” shared West Roldan, who stocks her inventory from the Tuesday and Saturday farmers markets downtown each week.

She has planted deep roots in Santa Barbara’s restaurant scene, with her resume spanning working as a chef with The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Elements, and Hungry Cat. Her business ventures include helping launch Julienne and co-founding State Street’s popular wine bar/restaurant, Satellite.

N A CHORAL PROGRAM DEDICATED TO THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICA, the Santa Barbara Choral Society performed the debut of Winter’s Window, composed by Julia Marie Newmann, an ASCAP award-winning composer recognized for her work in both television and film.

Lyrics were created by local poet Elizabeth Spies. The concert was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Santa Barbara last weekend.

Adaptation and Resilience Program

NOWING THAT FLOODING, ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS, AND SEA LEVEL RISE are inevitable ways global climate change will hit home in Santa Barbara, the City of Santa Barbara has released its draft Wastewater and Water Systems Climate Adaptation Plan. The first plan of its kind in the state, it outlines preventative steps that can be taken over the next 20 years to secure coastal infrastructure, including El Estero Water Resource Center, as well as reduce Santa Barbara’s flooding problems.

The draft plan went before the City Council last week, with community members invited to review the plan and submit public comment between now and February 10, 2026.

“We are looking at the bigger picture rather than just being reactionary or temporary,” said Councilmember Eric Friedman during the December 9 meeting. “We’re looking longer term to get ahead of projected changes.”

The wastewater and water systems-specific plan is born out of the city’s larger Adaptation and Resilience Program that focuses on ways to protect the city from climate change. To date, this program has been largely grant-funded, with the city receiving over five million in funds from the California Coastal Commission and Coastal Conservancy to study and implement initiatives that address sea level and stormwater concerns.

These concerns are only growing in light of the area’s intensified rainfall patterns. As evidenced by November’s last storms, Santa Barbara now receives greater amounts of rain in shorter periods of time, with city staff reporting that our area is twice as likely to experience what is known as a “ten-year storm.” When this happens, stormwater infrastructure is overwhelmed and flooding occurs, especially in the low-lying neighborhoods and streets between the waterfront to north of Highway 101.

This flooding proves especially dangerous to the wastewater system, as floodwaters entering the sewers can lead to unsanitary overflows. Sea level rise also increases the threat of seawater entering sewers during storms, which would disrupt the system as saltwater kills the bacteria used to treat wastewater.

The draft Wastewater and Water Systems Climate Adaptation Plan prioritizes actions that can be taken against these threats in the next 20 years. Primary recommendations include installing a floodwall system at the El Estero facility, as well as addressing the surrounding streets’ tendency to flood and limit access to the site.

The draft plan also calls for taking steps to protect or relocate the city’s desalination intake pipeline weir box as well as utilities located under Cabrillo Boulevard.

Additional recommendations to prevent residential flooding include sealing manholes and protecting sewer pipes in regions prone to flooding.

The most complex recommendation outlined calls for transitioning neighborhoods in low-lying, floodprone regions away from their present, gravity-fed sewer systems to low-pressure systems. As it stands, the gravity-fed system presents greater risks for intaking rainwater and seawater. Installing pumps and pressurizing the system would prevent sewer overflow and limit chances of saltwater harming the wastewater treatment process.

However, the transition to a low-pressure sewer would also rely on all private residential and business connections to make infrastructure adjustments before connecting to the main, public lines.

Accordingly, the draft plan recommends that the city investigate incentive programs to help city customers convert their existing connections over the course of the next 20 years. City Councilmembers stressed the need for ensuring financial support is provided during these transitions.

“It’s new to us but not new to the wastewater industry,” said Joshua Haggmark, Santa Barbara’s Water Resources Director. “These are some significant investments. We certainly will be looking for opportunities to leverage or how to offset those costs.

The critical part is we need private investment done first and then we’ll come in.”

The plan also calls for the city to consider an ordinance in the next five years that would mandate any new connections to the sewer system in that area to include the necessary pumps for pressurization.

City of SB Offices Close for Holidays MOST NON-EMERGENCY CITY OF SANTA BARBARA OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED from Monday, December 22nd, 2025, through Friday, January 2nd, 2026, over the course of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The City Hall building will undergo fumigation from Monday, December 22nd, through Wednesday, December 24th. A perimeter fence will be installed around the building for the duration of the work. Normal operations will resume on Monday, January 5th, 2026.

Police, Fire, and Harbor Patrol emergency services will be fully staffed throughout the office closure. The 9-1-1 emergency service will continue to dispatch calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

City of Santa Barbara Plans Infrastructure Changes to Protect Wastewater and Water Systems

Flooding and sea level rise are emerging as increasing threats to Santa Barbara’s wastewater and water systems, especially in the low-lying areas bordering the waterfront to north of Highway 101

An additional two to three million in funding needs are expected for studies and designs over the next 20 years as the plan progresses. Proposed infrastructure modifications are estimated to cost between $50 to $130 million, with more staff resources such as engineers and project managers also anticipated. While additional grant funding will be sought, the City of Santa Barbara will need to provide some matching funds. Precise financial details will become known as plans are finalized.

All projects will proceed with a phased approach, meaning that subsequent steps will be pursued when triggered by certain events or data.

Long-term topics of interest include a cost-benefit analysis of opting to either elevate and protect El Estero in its current, waterfront-adjacent location, or potentially relocating the facility. If necessary, this latter option would occur closer to the end of this century, with an identified possible relocation site being the cityowned municipal golf course.

Moving forward, the draft plan will go before the Sustainability Council Committee, Planning Commission, and Water Commission between January and February. It is projected to go before the City Council for approval in spring 2026.

Santa Barbara City Council Majority Backs Moratorium on Rent Increases In a dramatic shift in policy, Santa Barbara City Council on Tuesday night showed support for a rent increase moratorium, while it crafts a separate rent stabilization ordinance.

The council will come back in January to formally vote on a rent moratorium, as well as update its Just Cause eviction ordinance. The vote was 4-3, with councilmembers Oscar Gutierrez, Meagan Harmon, Wendy Santamaria and Kristen Sneddon supporting the moratorium.

Among the speakers was renter Hillary Blackerby. She said the city is fully capable of creating an ordinance that is legally defensible.

“It seems that landlords always threaten lawsuits, but remember the real threat in our community, there are several, but one of them is on the first of the month, or whenever a lease renewal comes up,” Blackerby said. “The fabric of our community tears just a little bit more, people are priced out.”

Although he opposes the proposed rent stabilization ordinance, Councilman Mike Jordan said he would work to create the best policy for the city.

Blackerby said there is a power imbalance between tenants and landlords.

“In my mind it is a benefit only to the current tenant,” Jordan said. “The subsequent tenants don’t get the benefit.”

“It is a business,” Blackerby said. “If you own property, if it doesn’t work out for you, you can get a job like the rest of us.”

The council directed staff to craft a rent stabilization ordinance, a process that could take up to a year. In the meantime, it also supported a halt on rent increases while the city works on the details of the ordinance.

Councilwoman Santamaria also pushed for the moratorium to have a unspecified retroactive date.

The city staff will work on the ordinance over the next few weeks and present a formal plan in January.

Renters and property owners filled the council seats and an additional overflow room.

As the meeting stretched into its third hour, tenant advocate groups ordered pizza and ate dinner while watching the proceedings on a large screen TV from the secondary room.

Renters and their advocates have pushed hard for a rent stabilization ordinance, citing rising rents, which force people out of the community. Property owners called the proposal “rent control,” and contended that it is

He said the proposal is punishing those housing providers who stepped in to fill the void and built housing during a prior slowgrowth era by the city.

Katich told the City Council to look at other cities in California that have tried to pass rent control and have been sued by property owners.

“Why put the city’s legal finances in jeopardy to adopt a more restrictive plan that has not been proven in any location to provide longterm stability, increasing overall housing affordability or inspiring additional housing supply,” Katich said.

Ana Arce, policy advocate for CAUSE, encouraged the council to help tenants while the city drafts a rent stabilization ordinance.

Jordan said rent caps contribute to the loss of housing stock and degradation of units.

Jordan added “The cost to administer this will be crippling.”

Stanley Tzankov, co-founder of the Santa Barbara Tenants Union, urged the council to pass the strongest rent stabilization ordinance possible.

“I beg you, don’t just pass any policy to get it off your list,” Tzankov said. “We need to get it right. We have a moral obligation to show that our city can care for our people.”

Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse said the ordinance was “burdening,” the city staff.

He said local voters opposed Prop 33, the statewide ballot measure to create rent control, last November.

Hillary Blackerby, a Santa Barbara renter, urged the City Council to support a rent stabilization ordinance.

“These are partnerships,” Rowse said.

“Landlords and tenants have private partnerships.”

He said both parties know the contracts they sign.

“They don’t need us in between to function,” Rowse said.

He also said rent control ordinances defy economics.

“The market is not the Easter Bunny,” Rowse said. “You don’t get to believe or not believe. The market is going to win in the end.”

He worked at the News-Press as an intern in 1995 and became a full time journalist at the newspaper in 1999. During his career he has worked for the San Jose Mercury News, Pacific Coast Business Times, Joshua Molina Hispanic Business Magazine, Santa Barbara Daily Sound, and Noozhawk. He has received three awards for his reporting from the California News Publishers Association.

The Santa Barbara News-Press, was founded in 1868. A Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, it went bankrupt and closed in 2023. This year, it became part of NEWSWELL, a nonprofit whose mission is to transform local news.

In Memory of Past SBMM President Llewellyn “Llew” Goodfield Jr.

T IS WITH DEEP SADNESS that we share the passing of Llewellyn “Llew” Goodfield Jr. on November 29, 2025, in Santa Barbara. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and steadfast community leader, Llew was also a past President of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, and his leadership helped shape SBMM into the institution it is today. As SBMM Executive Director Greg Gorga shared, “Llew was President in 2000, when the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum opened its doors, and his leadership helped lay the keel for what SBMM is today. Volunteering at SBMM was a family affair too, his wife Marilyn and daughter Francie also served on the museum’s board and various committees. We are forever thankful for Llew’s contributions.”

A proud descendant of Santa Barbara’s historic Rogers family, Llew’s roots ran deep in our coastal community. He grew up between Santa Barbara and

Carpinteria, working alongside his family at their Ivy Oaks property and later at Rogers Furniture on State Street. After serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps aboard the USS Los Angeles, Llew built a successful career in commercial development while never losing his connection to the waterfront and to local history.

Friends knew him as “Big Llewie,” a true gentleman whose booming laugh and twinkling eyes lit up every room.

OR THE FIRST TIME ON THE CENTRAL COAST, cutting-edge monarch butterfly research is taking place right here in Goleta. Scientists from Althouse & Meade, in coordination with the City of Goleta, with funding from the USFWS and support from Ellwood Friends, are deploying ultra-light tracking tags on monarchs, offering an unprecedented look at how these iconic butterflies move, migrate, and survive. Watch this short video to learn more and see for yourself how exciting this research is!

The tags weigh about as much as a grain of rice and transmit data via Bluetooth through the Project Monarch app and the Motus network. This allows tagged butterflies to be detected as they travel through the landscape, providing detailed insights into migration patterns. Once the monarchs are tagged and active, the public can follow them on the Project Monarch app created by Cape May Point Science Center and Cellular Tracking Technologies.

Monarchs naturally experience variable survival during the overwintering season, and some butterflies will not survive the overwintering season. Every tagged butterfly, however, provides meaningful data to help scientists better understand and protect the species. Tags were recently deployed and activated, with the possibility for more tagging in January/February as monarchs disperse the overwintering sites.

Ellwood Mesa has long been a critical overwintering site for monarchs.

With fewer butterflies arriving this season, scientists are expanding the study north and south along the Central Coast to collect more comprehensive data on overwintering movement and spring dispersal. The work is fully permitted and science-based, contributing directly to long-term habitat protection and species recovery.

This project represents a rare and inspiring moment in conservation science, bringing cutting-edge research to Goleta and giving the public a chance to connect with monarchs in a meaningful way.

Police Blotter Alaniz Convicted of First-Degree Murder IN A TRIAL BY JURY, Alfredo Junior Alaniz, 25, of Santa Maria, was convicted of first-degree murder. He will be sentenced on January 13th, according to an announcement by Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch. Alaniz was also convicted of special allegations that he committed the crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang, and he personally used a firearm as well as personally discharged a firearm causing death. According to the court report: In the early morning hours of May 16, 2021, Alfredo Alaniz, a Santa Maria gang member, shot Mario Merino Gonzalez 16 times, including 15 times in the back, on North Lincoln Street in Santa Maria. At the time of his death, Mario Merino Gonzalez was 19 years old. District Attorney John T. Savrnoch stated,“This case involved the senseless and brutal killing of a young man.I want to thank the jury for their service. I also want to thank the Santa Maria Police Department for their tireless work in investigating this case, especially Santa Maria Police Detectives Ryan Preast and Joshua Yee. Their efforts made today’s verdict possible.”

Sentencing is scheduled for Santa Barbara Superior Court, Santa Maria Division, Department 6. Alaniz faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison.

Neighborhood Disturbance Arrest IN RESPONSE TO A 911 CALL on December 6th, at approximately 12:55pm, Santa Barbara Police Communications received information regarding a female allegedly throwing items at vehicles near the intersection of El Camino De La Luz and Oliver Rd. Santa Barbara Police officers located a female holding a belt in each hand as she walked away from the location where vandalism had just occurred. The subject was later identified as Chelsea Haffeman, 28. Haffeman did not comply with officers’ orders and instead challenged the officer with the weapon in hand. The officer deployed their conducted energy device, which was ineffective. Haffeman ran into her residence on Elise Way and would not surrender. Further investigation revealed that Haffeman had threatened to harm another victim prior to vehicle vandalism. After numerous failed attempts to gain Haffeman’s compliance in exiting the residence, Santa Barbara Police detectives assisted in obtaining a search and arrest warrant for Haffeman at her residence. At approximately 6:32pm, officers served the warrant and safely took Haffeman into custody. She was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for assault likely to produce great bodily injury, criminal threats, and vandalism.

Hoffman Sentenced to State Prison for Fatal Hit-and-Run BROCK HOFFMAN OF SANTA BARBARA was sentenced to two years in state prison on November 3, 2025. The defendant pled guilty to a felony violation of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death or serious permanent injury, according to Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch. The charge stemed from a fatal collision on June 29, 2024, on Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara. On this date, the defendant struck Juan Lopez with his vehicle resulting in Mr. Lopez’s death. The defendant then fled the scene of the collision.

District Attorney John Savrnoch stated in a press release, “The defendant was held accountable in this case due to the outstanding work, dedication, and collaboration between the Santa Barbara Police Department and the prosecution team led by Deputy District Attorney Michelle Mossembekker. The pain associated with this tragic loss of life was exacerbated by the defendant’s criminal decision to leave the scene without contacting the authorities or attempting to render aid.”

City Finalizes Purchase of 816 Cacique Street Shelter Facility and Announces Interim Service Provider IN A MILESTONE MOVE TO EXPAND ACCESS TO SHELTER SERVICES, the City of Santa Barbara has officially approved the purchase of the emergency shelter facility located at 816 Cacique St. from People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) for $3.75 million, funded through Measure C allocations. The total investment, including appropriations for inspections and immediate life safety and accessibility upgrades, brings the overall cost to $4.06 million.

Mercy House, a nonprofit organization based in Santa Ana, brings over 34 years of experience in operating emergency shelters and housing programs across California and Arizona. Their approach integrates trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and a housing-first philosophy. Mercy House will provide a full spectrum of services, including shelter, health care, employment assistance, housing navigation, and neighborhood outreach.

Renovated in 2002, the 24,423-square-foot facility currently serves approximately 100 clients and has long been a vital resource for individuals experiencing homelessness. The site offers shelter, meals, hygiene services, healthcare access, case management, and more.

“This acquisition ensures that the City can maintain and improve a critical resource for our unhoused neighbors,” said Barbara Andersen, Senior Assistant to the City Administrator. “We are proud to partner with Mercy House to provide compassionate, comprehensive care during this transition and beyond.”

With PATH formally announcing its departure from the site in August 2025, the City moved to ensure uninterrupted services, recently naming Mercy House Living Centers as the interim service provider. Mercy House will work alongside PATH staff throughout December to provide a smooth transition.

The City is also working with regional partners to develop a Request for Proposals for a long-term service provider, expected to be released in March 2026. Mercy House will be eligible to apply, and their performance during the interim period will be considered in the evaluation.

Santa Barbara artistic director María Bermúdez, Andalusian singers Pilar Moreno and Pepele Méndez, the lyrical voice of the violin masterfully played

by David Morales Boroff, the rock-solid flamenco guitar of Kambiz Pakan, and dancer/teacher Timo Núñez accompanied on palmas.

Moreno, resplendent in her bright red silk mantón, translated Pepele’s instructions to the crowd, “La Zambomba is all about participation, it’s about singing, dancing, and drinking wine.” The enthusiastic public followed those instructions.

The infectious bulerías beat inspired Mateo and Ale dancers to their (Timo’s nephews) feet. Among those who jumped onto the dance floor to improvise were children as young as three years old; former Spirit of Fiesta Jack Harwood; Tink Gerthoffer and Chely Sagastume, who arrived straight from performing at the Granada Theatre for the Grace Fisher Foundation; and local veteran artists, like the storied dance teacher Ana Galindo and dancer German Brignole.

David Morales Boroff grew up in San Diego in an extremely artistic family. He received a Presidential scholarship to the Berklee College of Music to pursue a film scoring degree. He plays bluegrass and jazz in addition to flamenco, participating in festivals and contests mainly in California, including touring with gypsy swing band Red Skunk.

Guitarist Kambiz Pakan was born in Iran and raised in California and Spain, with a deep passion for flamenco that shines in each note. He’s performed worldwide, with an apparent ease for the difficult flamenco palos or rhythms that bears proof to his decades of practice.

SBCC Condemns ICE Activity on Campus AFTER ICE ENTERED SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE LAST WEEK - The SBCC Board of Trustees President is making it clear they were not given any permission to be there. Jonathan Abboud writes: “I want to make it crystal clear as the SBCC Board of Trustees President: SBCC has absolutely nothing to do with ICE staging in our parking lots. We did not communicate with them beforehand, they did not ask for permission, and they did not pay for parking as anyone else would. Our Campus Safety employees who regulate parking/access were no longer working for the day when ICE arrived, and ICE entered the West Campus when our Campus Safety kiosk was closed. SBCC does not support the use of our campus for ICE activities for many reasons; most importantly, it disrupts ALL people’s educational experience on campus. SBCC has asked our congressional member to communicate this to ICE, requesting that they no longer use our campuses, and we have also asked additional elected leaders at the county and state levels to advocate and support us. We will continue to provide information about these matters as required by state law.”

AT GUNPOINT, TWO ARRESTS WERE MADE following a brief standoff at a Santa Barbara motel Saturday, December 13th. Police followed a GPS tracker on a stolen bike. They reportedly found other stolen items. The suspects were booked on suspicion of theft, narcotics-related offenses, and resisting arrest. They also had warrants.

“This project will increase the overall connectivity for the City, allowing bicyclists and pedestrians both access to a safe, reliable route between two of the City’s major commercial and hubs and residential communities,” shared Autumn Glaeser, Assistant Goleta Public Works Director, with VOICE. “Additionally, the southern route will improve Goleta residents’ access to Goleta Beach Park, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), and the rest of Santa Barbara County.”

Construction is taking place along the segment of the path that follows San Jose Creek from Calle Real to Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park. Work will begin with the removal of vegetation and trees to prepare the site for path construction. After this initial phase, construction will pause for the remainder of the winter and resume in spring 2026. As part of the path’s environmental restoration, trees and vegetation will be removed in accordance with all applicable permits. For every tree removed, multiple new trees will be planted. Mitigation planting will take place along the path, including sites at: San Jose Creek at Jonny D. Wallis Neighborhood Park; Old San Jose Creek near Ekwill Street; and Devereux Creek within the Ellwood Mesa Open Space Preserve.

“The project is subject to the mitigation and restoration requirements of its various permits with regulatory agencies,” said Glaeser. “These requirements require replanting trees at higher ratios to re-establish and enhance the aquatic native vegetation with the goal of returning natural functions and value to a degraded aquatic resource. HE MUCH DELAYED ‘OFFICIAL’ U.S. UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT FOR NOVEMBER was actually close to earlier industry predictions from private payroll surveys. A total of 64,000 private payroll jobs were created in November, but just 116,000 jobs have been created since Trump’s April 2nd retaliatory tariff announcements—17,000 jobs per month.

This is the train wreck that Trump’s economic policies have created from the combination of DOGE government job and spending cuts, and immigrant roundups.

So why have Trump and his Republicans done this to American workers and the American economy?

Because the real reason for the tariff wars and government downsizing is to accumulate and centralize all power and wealth to Trump’s oligarchs and the White House.

And Congress hasn’t yet approved any of the tariff agreements that are causing prices to soar on everything.

In November, both the unemployment rate, at 4.6 percent is a four-year high, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.8 million, were higher than last November, when the jobless rate was 4.2 percent, and the number of unemployed people was 7.1 million.

Wall Street’s optimism is keeping stock indexes at record highs because it is betting on next year when consumers see higher tax refunds and corporations higher profits as their new tax benefits (from Big Beautiful Tax Bill) and AI productivity gains kick in.

But who benefits? It’s not hard to guess. It’s the same K-shaped, trickle-down economy once again. A good way to look at it with +three percent inflation is that it hurts lower and middle-income folk without assets like homes and stocks that can afford less, while it boosts uppermiddle and upper-income folks because rising inflation increases value of the assets they own.

So, the economy will continue to grow, but only for those near the top. Trump is bringing back the Gilded Age

of the 1890s that created the corruption and self-dealing of the original robber barons. That is the America he wants to make greater again!

“Those at the bottom are living with the cumulative impacts of price inflation,” said Peter Atwater, an economics professor at William & Mary in Virginia, as cited by MarketWatch. “At the same time, those at the top are benefiting from the cumulative impact of asset inflation.”

A Fascinating Biographical Film: Blue Moon

The story takes place within a claustrophobic setting in New York City on the same night that the 1943 musical Oklahoma! premiered on Broadway. IRECTOR RICHARD LINKLATER (BOYHOOD, SCHOOL OF ROCK) HAS RELEASED TWO ACCOMPLISHED HISTORICAL FILM PROJECTS THIS YEAR, Nouvelle Vague (about the making of the 1960 French New Wave classic Breathless) and a dramatic story of a night at Sardi’s spotlighting the last days of legendary Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, Blue Moon. Of the two, the most accessible is Blue Moon, a dialogue-rich story fictionalizing the clever/bitter ruminations of Hart.

Cynthia Erivo accepts the Kirk Douglas Award

Erivo has continually amazed audiences with her powerful voice and presence, most recently starring as Elphaba in the Wicked films. Jon M. Chu, the films’ award-winning director, presented Erivo with her award. Tony, BAFTA, and Emmy-award winning producer Marc Platt also celebrated Erivo’s filmography, stressing that Wicked would not have been possible without her. SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling shared that from the moment he saw Erivo in The Color Purple he was “in awe of her strength, her beauty and her expressiveness… Knowing I had witnessed something historic – not just a great performance – but the birth of a star like I’d never seen before.”

Since 2006, the Kirk Douglas Award has been presented to lifelong contributors to cinema, whether that be before or behind the camera. Past recipients include Will Ferrell, Ryan Gosling, Michelle Yeoh, and others. The annual gala raises funds for SBIFF’s educational programming for students and community members.

President of the SBIFF Board Ernesto Paredes highlighted SBIFF’s latest ongoing project: a new five-plex film center to revitalize and reimagine the Fiesta Five movie theater in downtown Santa Barbara. The McHurley Film Center will allow SBIFF to expand their year-round programming of independent, foreign, documentary, retrospective, and family-friendly films, to grow educational programs, and offer greater accessibility to the community.

Dappled rays light aquatic paradise

A

S DAYS GROW SHORTER, and the year nears its turn, the Santa Barbara art scene offers beautiful moments of respite full of color, light, and life.

At the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, one such exhibition that shines presents the photography of Ralph A. Clevenger, in Redwoods of the Sea: Life in the Channel Islands Kelp Forests. Nearing the end of its run, the exhibit lights up the upper level of the museum and will be on view through January 4th, 2026.

The Maritime Museum, a treat in and of itself to visit, hosts regular art exhibitions.

This one features the living creatures of the deep that inhabit the environs of the kelp forest.

The extraordinary photography of renowned naturalist and underwater photographer Ralph A. Clevenger opens up underwater vistas and brings viewers face to face with colorful Garibaldi and baby harbor seals.

where shafts of sunlight flicker across the seafloor and schools of fish weave through a towering underwater landscape are especially evocative of the other world existing right next to ours.

“Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) can grow up to two feet a day, reaching lengths of over 100 feet,” according to exhibit information. “These towering Kelp fronds flowing in a current near the ocean marine forests protect our coastline surface Photo © Ralph A. Clevenger from erosion, provide vital habitat for nearly a thousand species of plants and animals, and play a crucial role in sequestering millions of tons of carbon each year. Kelp forests even contribute to everyday products like ice cream and cosmetics,” it continues.

The exhibit legend elaborates with a quote from Norah Eddy, associate director of The Nature Conservancy’s oceans program in California: “Kelp is both an organism and a habitat. As an organism its benefits are many. Kelp forests can store 20 times more carbon per acre than forests on land and help mitigate ocean acidification caused by climate change. They generate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic value through commercial and sport fisheries, recreational activities, and harvesting for the compound alginic acid, which is used as an ingredient in ice cream, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. All of these are ecosystem services provided by our giant kelp forests.”

Submissions are now open. To participate: email up to three images to artcall@voicesb.art by end of day, December 28th.

Sculpture and 2D work is welcome.

Label images with artist name.title of the piece. Entry email must also include: artist’s name, telephone number, material, dimensions, price.

ACCEPTED entries pay fee at the ingathering $40 - 1st piece; $35 - 2nd piece; $30 - 3rd piece.

All pieces must be wired or pedestal ready. NO brackets, saw tooth, etc.

Sales: 70% to artist / 30% to gallery.

Ingathering: Accepted art must be dropped off between 11am-1pm, Sunday, January 4th.

Exhibition Dates: January 5th to 31st, 2026 Unsold Art Pick Up: Saturday, January 31st - 3 to 5pm

• Be sure to visit A Crimson Holiday, now celebrating 13 years of seasonal gift galleries with over 40 Santa Barbara area artisans participating in the show .This year it features wearable art, a selection of items for the home, hand made jewelry, designer scarves and shawls, plus toys, books, clothing, stuffed critters, and fairy costumes for children. A special book of Santa Barbara holiday memories is also available.
