José Hernández’s Merry-Achi Christmas

ELEBRATING THE FESTIVE CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS OF MEXICO, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, led by one of the foremost masters of mariachi music, Jose Hernandez, will return to the Arlington at 7pm on December 6th, in a UCSB Arts & Lectures presentation.

United States. The marriage of the styles is so seamless that it seems natural now.

“The audience can expect our unique Mariachi renditions of the Christmas classics intertwined with the most popular Mexican songs written by Mexico’s greatest composers. Also a tribute to Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite,” commented Jose Hernandez.

Experience Merry-achi holiday magic in a performance that includes elements of Las Posadas alongside traditional Christmas carols.

Sol de México has played to sold out halls from New York’s Lincoln Center to Viña del Mar in Santiago, Chile. Not only were they the first mariachi group to play concerts in Beijing, China and Pyongyang, North Korea; the shows were sold out! They have also played for four U.S. presidents (Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush). From the beginning of his career, Hernández has been an innovator, as evidenced by creating a cohesive collaboration with symphonies throughout the

“Everybody in Latin America serenades their girlfriend or their wife with mariachi music – because they see it in the movies. But it has evolved so much over the last 20 years it’s almost like a classical art form,” Hernández noted.

The romance of Mariachi songs is that all things are possible. The humor, the spirit, and even the bittersweet inspire us to a world where we live out our dreams. In that same way, much of the excitement of José Hernández’ Mariachi Sol de México is that all things mariachi are possible. While his family tree is rooted in five generations of mariachi musicians that hail from La Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco, Hernández built on that foundation to grow mariachi music in new lands, in new musical genres, and in the hearts of new audiences. Unprecedented, unrivaled, and uninhibited, the impact of Hernández and Sol de Mexico on mariachi and all music is undeniable. After forming Mariachi Sol de México in

1981, Hernández’ charismatic arrangements and signature trumpet playing made the group an instant and lasting success. Indeed, the theatrical aspect of Sol de México’s performances has been an attraction to Hollywood for soundtracks, where Hernández has provided music since the 1980s. The group’s music was featured in the movie Glory Road and in the Academy Award-nominated film Seabiscuit.

to play at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards.

Also under Hernández’ guiding hands, the art form has taken on many other successful, fun, and creative styles – bringing more generations into the mariachi family. He created Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, America’s first all-female mariachi ensemble. In 1991 he formed a children’s music foundation, the Mariachi Heritage Society, because the importance of maintaining the spirit of culture is only equaled by the importance of giving children the tools for success in any endeavor.

“I am a fifth-generation mariachi musician – my dad came here in the 1940s when there was one place in Los Angeles that had mariachi music and the band had to pay the restaurant owner 25 cents per song to make up for the lost jukebox quarter. But my father always said that the day mariachi music is work is the day you die.”

The versatility of Sol de México to expand to new audiences has led to fabulous, unexpected collaborations, such as with the Beach Boys and Willie Nelson. Within the world of Latin music, Sol de México has played alongside stars such as Vicente Fernandez, Selena, Jose Feliciano, and a recordbreaking concert tour with the one and only Luis Miguel. Hernández’ records have been nominated for multiple Grammy awards, and Sol de México was invited

But more than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the mariachi tradition that courses through Hernández’ veins into audiences’ hearts. Although he has played for heads of state, it is not surprising to see Hernández perform at his famous mariachi restaurant, Cielito Lindo. Arranging and writing mariachi music is a legacy that he respects and loves.

ITIZENS FOR THE CARPINTERIA BLUFFS recently elected Patrick Crooks as its board president for a term of two years. Crooks has pledged to lead the 26-year-old nonprofit in its work to preserve two parcels west and adjacent to the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve totalling 27.5 acres, where a developer has proposed constructing a large-scale resort and apartment complex. “Realizing places like Carpinteria don’t happen by accident, that it takes people getting involved, has inspired me to join groups like Citizens for the Carpinteira Bluffs,” said Crooks, who works as a Project Scientist at Langan Engineering & Environmental Services.

Sortis Holdings has proposed constructing a large development that would include a restaurant, spa, events center, and nearly 300 parking spaces on the property, which spans the bluffs from Carpinteria Avenue to the Carpinteria harbor seal rookery overlook — totaling nearly 125,000 square feet of new buildings. www.carpinteriabluffs.org

OSPICE OF SANTA BARBARA encourages our community to not just “get through” the holidays, but to embrace the season as a time for healing. Here are a few tips we hope will be helpful to you:

As the holidays near, you should acknowledge that there will be hard times ahead as you mourn your loved one. Remember that everyone grieves differently, and that it’s okay to not feel okay. If there are children in your family who are also coping with loss, focus on their needs and help them process through their grief. Make a conscious decision when it comes to carrying on your holiday traditions, or considering starting new ones. Continuing the old traditions may help keep your loved one’s memory alive, but setting new ones may help you to move on. Honor your loved one’s memory, whether it is through a beloved holiday tradition, or by sharing stories about them with your friends. Remember that although they are gone, their memory will always live on in your heart. Don’t forget to take care of yourself by getting a proper amount of sleep, eating healthy and exercising when you can, but without forcing too much of your energy. Taking care of your body will help alleviate stress and improve your overall wellbeing. Surround yourself with a supportive community that will be with you every step of the way as you cope with your grief. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. And, in hopes of making the holidays brighter for you and your family, we cordially invite you to celebrate and honor the lives of your loved ones at Hospice of Santa Barbara’s 40th annual Light Up A Life ceremonies. Visit Hospiceofsb.org for dates and locations or see page 14 of this week’s VOICE Magazine.

Ruffalo’s commitment extends beyond the silver screen, as exemplified in his lead role in Dark Waters, a film which leveraged the power of storytelling to shed light on the urgent need for environmental protections. His advocacy for clean energy and environmental and social justice aligns seamlessly with the stories and characters he brings to life on screen. “Ruffalo has been such a remarkable performer for years—deserving all the honors year after year—but his go-for broke acting in Poor Things is a revelation. An extraordinary talent that just keeps outdoing himself,” remarked SBIFF’s Executive Director Roger Durling. The American Riviera Award was established to recognize actors who have made a significant contribution to American Cinema. Previous recipients include Brendan Fraser, Kristen Stewart, Delroy Lindo, Renée Zellweger, Viggo Mortenson, Sam Rockwell, Jeff Bridges, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Robert Redford, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Annette Bening, Sandra Bullock, Mickey Rourke, Tommy Lee Jones, Forrest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kevin Bacon, and Diane Lane.

48th Annual SB Festival Ballet production of The Nutcracker

The Magic of the Holidays Begins!

T

HE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN for Santa Barbara’s favorite traditional production of The Nutcracker, performed for the 48th year by Santa Barbara Festival Ballet. A cherished holiday tradition, it is returning to The Arlington Theatre for three performances on Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th. Promising to be as heartwarming and festive as ever, it’s an event suitable for dreamers of all ages. Four internationally recognized guest artists hailing from renowned ballet companies in the country will be featured. Principal dancers Alexandra Hutchinson and Kouadio Davis with Dance Theatre of Harlem, and principal dancers Misa Kuranaga and Esteban Hernandez with the San Francisco Ballet, will grace the stage alongside gifted students from UCSB and Santa Barbara Festival Ballet. “We’re thrilled to welcome back Alexandra, Kouadio, and Misa and eagerly anticipate Esteban’s debut in our production. It’s an honor to be able to showcase these accomplished performers,” shared Valerie Huston, SBFB’s Resident Choreographer and Board Advisor. With a live orchestra, mesmerizing stage sets, and dazzling costumes, the audience will embark on a captivating journey into a magical winter wonderland and the Kingdom of Sweets. Accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, the cast, including characters Clara, the Nutcracker, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Mouse King, will bring this iconic tale to life. Audiences can expect enchanting scenes, including dancing snowflakes and flowers, an army of mischievous mice, and much more! Friends of Clara, Santa Barbara Festival Ballet’s community outreach program for children facing economic challenges, ensures that the show is accessible to all. Through partnerships with community service agencies, financially disadvantaged students and their families can enjoy complimentary tickets and participate in an educational program on the music and history of the Nutcracker ballet. To support this initiative as a sponsor or donor and become a Friends of Clara partner, call 805899-2901. Performances are set for Saturday, December 9th at 2:30pm and 7pm, and Sunday, December 10th at 2:30pm. For tickets ($30 to $65) visit https://santabarbarafestivalballet.com/buy-nutcracker-tickets or call 805-899-2901.

Deirdre on the Art Walk N A SUNNY AUTUMN DAY, IN AN ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE THE BLACK FRIDAY (in this case ... Saturday!) crowds, I decided to seek refuge in a more comfortable location. After having left several parking lots trying to locate the desired retail outlets, I found myself on Cabrillo Boulevard and happy to see the some of the Sunday vendors with umbrellas, comfy seating, and arts and crafts decked out on display a day early. The Channel Islands plus crystal clear ocean view lured me on to the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show for a look-see. Strolling past the crafts and clothing vendors, my eye caught an artist’s booth with a variety of interesting images, each very different from the other. One particular image, the largest of the entire collection, was especially compelling. It was painted with a glorious spectrum of mixed colors from bright blues and greens to pinks, reds, oranges: a ray of solid black was included appearing to divide the canvas into two parts. I was curious at to its meaning and to know more about the artist.

The most astonishing fact was that Deirdre Stietzel, originally from New Jersey, has actually been a working artist for a very short period of time. Although from an artistic family she earned a degree in psychology at Rutger’s University and soon after moved to Colorado where she worked as pre-school teacher.

leaving I admired another of her images titled “Silence”, the focus being a wild florescent pink superimposed on a field of blue green with highlights. There was a poem attached to the back of the canvas that I’d like to share with you. The motion of love Like a dance The colors move Across the canvas A Melody I move In the stillness In this silence I dance Let’s dance Sigrid Toye volunteers for the Breakwater Flag Project. She is on the board of directors of the Maritime Museum and participates in Yacht Club activities. An educational/behavior therapist, Sigrid holds a Ph.D in clinical psychology. “My passion to create never waned, so I fashioned elaborate classrooms that included lots of art to enhance the learning experience,” she shared. Her priorities were forced to shift when, in 2005, she was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, after which she experienced a lengthy period of physical well being with a renewed focus on the arts and crafts, including an Etsy Shop. The turning point came in 2018 when she developed metastatic breast cancer. “This came as a shock and I was forced to change how I lived my life,” she continued. “My focus became art and poetry not only for therapy and expression but as a direct pathway to spirituality. Drawing and writing became a daily mediation practice for me with full release of emotion on paper in a space of flow and freedom. The resulting designs simply unfolded organically. As I continued to practice this “Sacred Art” all traces of cancer disappeared.” During the pandemic, in 2021, Stietzel made the courageous move to travel way across the country to Santa Barbara to pursue a life in art and poetry. She added, “You know, I just threw up my hands and went with the message I felt was from the Universe... and here I am!” “The painting that you liked,” Stietzel revealed, “is actually mixed media and includes a variety of materials.” She added with a chuckle, “Wondering what I should bring along today, a friend suggested that I take this one off my wall and show it off!” The meaning of the intersecting black ray was also explained. “The black area represents an internal meditative space, a place of total calm, like the sacred, healing space of rejuvenation that nothing outside of it can penetrate.” The meaning became completely clear to me in the context of Stietzel’s encouraging story of courage and recovery. safe, convenient, and affordable shopping experiences with the products and services consumers needed, and at great prices.” Consumer confidence also increased. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® increased in November to 102.0 (1985=100), up from a downwardly revised 99.1 in October. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions— ticked down slightly to 138.2 (1985=100), from 138.6. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—rose to 77.8 (1985=100) in November, up from its downwardly revised reading of 72.7 in October. “Consumer confidence increased in November, following three consecutive months of decline,” said Dana Peterson, Chief Economist at The Conference Board. “This improvement reflected a recovery in the Expectations Index, while the Present Situation Index was largely unchanged.” Higher confidence was concentrated primarily among householders aged 55 and up but confidence among householders aged 35-54 declined slightly. Top this off with a revised estimate of third quarter Real GDP growth that rose to 5.2 percent from its initial estimate

of 4.9 percent. But a sign of slowing inflation was the fact that households spending rose 3.6 percent in the third quarter, down from an original four percent. And Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) prices that are part of the GDP growth estimate rose just 2.8 percent, 2.3 percent with food and energy prices excluded. Business profits, meanwhile, increased for the second quarter in a row. They rose 3.3 percent to mark the largest gain in five quarters, suggesting that higher labor costs are not weighing much on earnings. Government spending was also a strong contributor as spending rose at a 5.5 percent rate, versus 4.6 percent initially. All of this news has stocks and bonds rallying—stocks because business profits have increased, and bonds because interest rates have declined precipitously. The yield on the ten-year Benchmark Treasury note that sets mortgage rates retreated 4.7 basis points to 4.288 percent from 4.335 percent Tuesday afternoon. This will give a huge boost to the housing market in the coming months. So why shouldn’t we be enjoying the holidays? Just maybe the Fed can stop worrying that it isn’t being taken seriously. Inflation is being tamed without causing a recession!

The Spirit of Flamenco!

A

By Dacia Harwood / Special to VOICE

REVERED GROUP OF GYPSY FLAMENCO SUPERSTARS, Maria Bermudez’s Sonidos Gitanos (Gypsy Sounds) was presented by Flamenco! Santa Barbara at the Lobero Theatre on Sunday, November 26th. The incredible group of artists from Andalusia, Spain provided varied vignettes of fiery music and dance throughout the magical evening. Dancer, choreographer, and part-time local Maria Bermudez, moved to Spain nearly forty years ago to embrace the art of flamenco. In the process, she fell in love with the deep-rooted “Gitano” culture and met her husband, Pelé De los Reyes, a Grammy-nominated Gypsy singer and composer. Maria’s company hails mostly from the flamenco (and sherry!) cradle of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. In addition to Maria and her husband, the show featured dancer José Maya, percussionist Ané Carrasco, multi-instrumentalist and singer Diego Amador, guitarist and singer Diego Carrasco, guitarists Curro Carrasco, Manuel Valencia, and singers Carmen Grilo, Coral de los Reyes, and Ana de los Reyes. “Flamenco is ever evolving and always full of surprises, but a sense of community is always at its core,” related Maria. Embracing both traditional and modern styles of flamenco, a UNESCO-heritage art form, the playful performances made it clear this group is family. In addition to serving as artistic director for Flamenco! Santa Barbara, Maria was named Ambassador of Flamenco by the city of Jerez and shares her art with a new generation of performers at Maria Bermudez Flamenco Performing Arts. Flamenco! Santa Barbara is a local nonprofit that creates authentic performances at various venues throughout the year, organizes workshops by visiting artists, and provides a tuition assistance program for local dancers. About a year in, and finding too much free time, he bought a paint by numbers kit. Finishing it, he turned it over and did his own painting, and he’s been creating

After receiving a bachelors and masters degree, he taught art for eight years on both the elementary and college level, “before I burned out. I realized I would rather make art than teach it,” he said. His next career move was starting a jewelry company, where he worked 14 years designing, manufacturing, and selling his work nationwide. However, the desire to paint and sculpt called... “I sold my jewelry company. Yet I was reluctant to dive deep into the water.” “Then 30+ years ago, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and it was a real wake-up call for me,” Jim shared. “My desire to create was screaming at me by this point: FIND YOUR PASSION!”

His story continues, “with the unflinching support of my wife, Dianne, along with the excellent medical care I continue to receive, I have discovered an abundance of creative outlets. Together we’ve enjoyed totally renovating several houses, extensive traveling,

gardening, and making art.” Jim and Dianne arrived in Santa Barbara in 2005, after a period with his grandchildren on the East Coast. He attributes his longevity to his “curiosity and wild imagination,” adding “Then throw in a dash of healthy living and lots of good loving.” Jim says, “These are definitely the best years of my life. I continue to love painting and making sculpture. Cancer may eventually prevail, but I’ve never felt more alive!”

During the 1st Thursday reception Organic Soup Kitchen will provide soup... and there will be birthday cake. “Jim is an extraordinary artist, and we are honored to be the recipient of such a generous gift,” shared Andrea Slaby, Chief Operating Officer at Organic Soup Kitchen. “As a cancer survivor and long time Organic Soup Kitchen client, Jim knows first hand the impact proper nutrition has on healing. We are incredibly grateful for his support of our mission.” Dianne tells me there will also be art given away during the reception.
