Opera Santa Barbara: interview with Artistic Director/Conductor Kostís Protopapas

Carmen – Temptress or Modern Woman? Protopapas: I did Madame Butterﬂy with him a few years ago at Opera Columbus and Harold’s career has been growing by leaps and bounds. He made his Met debut last year and he’s been getting into some bigger repertoire, like Don José. He’s done that role several times. He is a great combination of someone that has a sturdy, mature voice but very young, handsome presence, and he’s a terriﬁc actor. I think he’s going to be a great foil for Leann’s Carmen. VOICE: The action of Carmen takes place in 19th century Seville. Will OSB’s staging be traditional or do you have a different setting in mind? Protopapas: This is a traditional production. The set comes from Opera San Jose. There’s a lot of scenery, it’s a big show, it’s grand opera. There are a lot of walls and mountains to move around, so we do need the two intermissions. The costumes are from Baltimore. I’ve done the show with those costumes before and they are my favorite. Really colorful, from the soldiers’ uniforms to the big mantillas and fancy town peoples’ costumes, the matador’s costumes and all that. It’s spectacularly beautiful, traditional, and grand.

How do you two work through any �� artistic differences you may have �� preparing a work like Carmen? �� Kostís Protopapas: Before I hire a �� director we have pretty extensive �� conversations about our visions for �� the piece, what we think the piece is about, also about what we think �� will work at this particular time with �� this particular audience. Different �� audiences like different kinds of �� productions. As Artistic Director, �� my job is to calibrate what is just right for our audience. Octavio and I �� Kostís Protopapas understand each other very well. He �� and I have been friends for a while now and this �� is our biggest production yet. He’s an incredibly �� talented, passionate young director. This is his first Carmen which is something he’s been trying �� to do for several years. He’s knowledgeable; it’s �� going to be an explosive production.” �� VOICE: This is an all-star cast with singers you �� have worked with on previous occasions. Mezzosoprano Leann Sandel-Pantaleo will be your MUSIC INTERVIEW �� Carmen. Why did you choose her? �� Protopapas: It is the first time she’s singing in �� Santa Barbara but it’s certainly not her first �� time doing Carmen. In fact, she is one of the finest Carmen’s I know. She’s done the role �� extensively. She did it for me once before, two �� years ago at Tulsa Opera and she’s an iconic �� Carmen; terrific, big, beautiful voice - she �� inhabits the part, she’s the real thing. �� VOICE: And tenor Harold Meers who will sing the �� role of Don José, Carmen’s jealous lover. Where �� did you first work with him and why is he perfect for this role? ��

VOICE: The character Carmen is in many ways a nineteenth century prototype for modern, liberated, self-aware women. What are your thoughts on the character? Protopapas: In any production I do, I think the characters have to be relatable, the audience has to develop empathy. Carmen is a realistic opera. It was written during the time of literary realism in France; Emile Zola talking about real people in very direct and sincere terms. In a way, it belongs more to the verismo tradition than the French opera tradition. Any Carmen I think should be very realistic production. There are no gods and kings in Carmen. They are working class people. They are soldiers, they are gypsies. So Carmen is a controversial character as is just about everybody else in the show and she has to make some choices which most of us probably wouldn’t make. But considering where she’s coming from, she didn’t have a lot of choice. I think she is a proud character, a very sincere character, one of the things that she says at the end, one of her famous lines is ‘Carmen was born free and will remain free.’ So, very sincere, makes her choices and lives up to them. Of course there is some tenderness, and there is some real humanity in her, as in any really good opera character. VOICE: Just about everybody can hum a tune or two from Carmen even if they aren’t sure quite where the tune came from or what it’s about. Is that part of the joy of presenting Bizet’s masterpiece – giving the public an opportunity to become familiar with the entire opera, sometimes for the ﬁrst time?

Protopapas: There still are people who haven’t seen Carmen. That’s why it’s important to do some of these classic operas with some regularity so that new people will see them. There are a lot of people who have heard about it, certainly heard the music and seen ﬁlm clips here and there, but there are probably a lot of people, even in Santa Barbara, that have never seen the entire show, which is always a very impressive show. We can all hum probably three or four tunes from Carmen even if we haven’t seen it, but it’s such a feast of melody. There’s just great tune after great tune and you don’t really realize that, until you see the whole opera from beginning to end. The little bits and pieces that we hum in the shower are only the tip of the iceberg; a lot of really fantastic music, and a dramatic piece of stagecraft as well.
