As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of our CASA volunteers, donors, and community partners. Your dedication has given a voice to the most vulnerable children in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, ensuring they have a strong advocate by their side during life’s most challenging moments. This year, we have seen remarkable growth not just in the number of children served, but in the strength of our organization and the support we ’ ve received from the community We’ve increased the number of trained advocates, enhanced volunteer programs, and strengthened resources to better serve children in need. At the same time, we ’ ve witnessed a surge in community support, with more individuals and organizations stepping forward to invest in our mission. This collective effort has allowed us to make an even greater impact, ensuring more children receive the consistent, compassionate advocacy they deserve. As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding our reach and deepening our impact Our vision is that every child who needs a CASA advocate will have one and with your continued support, we are confident this vision can become a reality Thank you for standing with us and believing in the power of advocacy. Together, we are changing lives one child at a time.
Sarah Lauck, 2024 Board President
As I sat and watched the recognition of volunteers, staff and supporters of CASA of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties at the annual meeting in December, I was deeply moved by the overwhelming goodness that still exists in our world Every individual affiliated with this incredible organization embodies the mission – to provide a meaningful voice and connection that instills hope and builds resilience for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. Those honored at the meeting, along with the countless others who work tirelessly, united over the past year to support 405 children in our community. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough. And like any passionate organization, we aspire for more.
More volunteers, more generous donations, more attendees to our fundraising events – all aimed at serving more children and making a profound impact As we step into 2025 amidst a constantly changing world, I urge you to reflect on two questions: What change am I making? What impact am I having? If your answers are a desire to create more change and have a greater impact, please reach out to the team at CASA. Together we can make a difference. And most importantly, you will touch the lives of children who are undeniably our future!

This story begins back in 2010, when a mother was struggling with substance use resulting in h newborn twins being placed in foster care In 2 mom gave birth to another set of twins, Micha Cameron, and in 2019, she gave birth prematu another baby boy, Zayne. All of the children w placed in foster care and referred to CASA for
In June 2019, mom was admitted to the hospit due to concerning behaviors that were determ to be caused by an overdose. The doctors even declared her brain dead, and on June 20, 2019 all five boys went to say goodbye to their moth in the hospital.
By 2020, Michael and Cameron, just 3 years old, had experienced 6 different foster care placements. Zayne, at 1 year old, was on placement number 5 They were never placed with their older brothers who have since been released from care and adopted by another family. Not long after, their father’s rights were terminated.
On October 14, 2020, the boys’ path led them to a new placement. Michael, Cameron, and Zayne moved into the home of foster parent, Terence. Finally, the boys’ futures started to look a little bit brighter as they adjusted to their new home and started to connect with their new foster parent.
With CASA’s support, their advocate’s guidance, and Terence’s love, Michael, Cameron, and Zayne finally found stability. Their journey is a powerful reminder of the lifechanging impact of advocacy and compassion.

In December 2024, CASAJWC hosted its Annual Meeting at the Gathering Place in the Longhouse Visitor Center at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. In recent years, CASA has restructured this event, listening to feedback from volunteers and community members about what they would like to see. Over the past two years, the Annual Meeting has been completely transformed. No longer limited to staff and board members, it now welcomes our entire community, bringing together the dedicated supporters closest to our mission
With attendance nearly tripling, this event has evolved into a powerful tradition one that now features an educational keynote and an award ceremony to honor our remarkable advocates, volunteers, and supporters. It was truly a morning of reflection, connection, and inspiration as attendees gathered over a delicious breakfast and explored meaningful ways to deepen their involvement in the year ahead.
The morning began with CASA President & CEO Natalie Julien sharing CASA’s strategic vision, followed by an inspiring keynote from Tim DeWeese, Director of Johnson County Mental Health Center, on how social determinants of health shape the mental well-being of the children CASA serves.
Guests also experienced a heartfelt mission moment from CASA advocate, Mike, and mom, Teena, as they shared their journey navigating the foster care system. And of course, we were thrilled to once again have KSHB 41’s Taylor Hemness as our event emcee bringing his signature warmth and energy to guide us through the morning.
We are also deeply grateful to our incredible sponsors WellSky, Empire Candle Co. LLC, and Holmes Murphy whose generous contributions helped make this event a success.

CASAJWC Awarded Growth Grant from National CASA
In 2024, CASAJWC was honored to receive a Growth Grant from the National Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association. This critical funding enabled us to hire two new Program Coordinators, significantly enhancing our ability to recruit, train, and support more volunteer advocates. With a stronger volunteer network, we will expand our capacity to serve more children in need of court advocacy directly advancing our mission to provide a meaningful voice and connection that instills hope and builds resilience for children who have experienced abuse or neglect.
This grant is a vital investment in CASA’s future, allowing us to strengthen our advocacy efforts and extend our reach to more children in need. By increasing our capacity, we ensured that more youth have the dedicated support of a CASA advocate someone who stands by their side, speaks up for their best interests, and helps them navigate the complexities of the child welfare system. With this growth, we remain steadfast in our commitment to building stability, resilience, and hope for the children we serve.
Though CASA’s partnership with Cornerstone Bank is relatively new, its impact has been significant. In 2024, Cornerstone Bank demonstrated a deep commitment to our mission by generously supporting our Back-to-Basics and Holiday Drives through both monetary contributions and in-kind resources Their dedication didn’t stop there Cornerstone Bank further strengthened its support by committing to our strategic plan. Partners like Cornerstone Bank are essential to the work we do, and we are profoundly grateful for their generosity and commitment.
QuikTrip has been a valued supporter of CASAJWC for many years, consistently demonstrating their commitment to the children and families we serve. In 2024, QuikTrip continued this tradition of generosity by contributing financially to our organization and hosting an internal holiday drive, collecting gifts to brighten the season for the children in our program. Their dedication to giving back has made a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve, and we deeply appreciate their ongoing partnership and support.
Garmin has been a steadfast supporter of CASAJWC since 2018, contributing over $50,000 to advance our mission. Their commitment extends beyond financial support, with consistent sponsorship of our annual fundraising events and generous employee contributions through donor designations. Since 2019, Garmin’s impact has grown even deeper with a company representative serving on our Board of Directors, helping guide our vision and strategy. Thanks to Garmin’s unwavering support, we can continue to provide a voice for children who need it most.
At CASAJWC, we know that children in foster care need more than just school supplies when starting a new school year they also need the basics to feel confident and cared for. That’s why, in 2023, we launched the Back-to-Basics Drive, shifting the focus from traditional school supply collections to essential items like new undergarments, hygiene products, and hair care essentials for the children we serve.
Flash forward to 2024 our drive’s second year and it was a resounding success. Thanks to the generosity of individual donors and corporate partners, we collected over 3,000 essential items, ensuring more than 90 children and youth had access to these critical resources.
For over a decade, the pinwheel has symbolized the importance of child abuse prevention, representing the joy, hope, and potential of every child. Each April, pinwheel gardens take root across the country, serving as a visible reminder that all children deserve safety, stability, and support.
In 2023, CASA of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties introduced Pinwheels for a Purpose, a fundraising and awareness campaign held during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Now in its second year, the initiative has continued to unite individuals, businesses, and organizations in a shared commitment to advocating for children in foster care.
To distribute donations, CASA staff and volunteers transformed our office into a welcoming "store," where children, their families, and advocates could select the items they needed most
This initiative not only meets immediate needs but also fosters empowerment and choice for the children we serve The overwhelming response from the community underscores the importance of filling gaps often overlooked in foster care Back-to-Basics is more than a donation drive it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we come together to support vulnerable youth
Through the campaign, supporters received pinwheels as a symbol of their dedication, displaying them in homes, offices, and community spaces to spark conversations about the importance of child welfare. Many also shared photos of their pinwheel gardens, amplifying awareness and encouraging others to get involved.
With the campaign’s growing impact, CASA is proud to make Pinwheels for a Purpose an annual tradition. In 2024, nearly 250 pinwheels were distributed throughout the community, reinforcing our mission and ensuring that every child we serve feels seen, supported, and valued.
Fourteen CASA advocates took a significant step forward in their advocacy by completing Fostering Futures, an advanced training designed to prepare them for the complexities of teen advocacy In 2024, this program deepened their understanding of adolescent development, the foster care experience for teens, and the challenges of aging out of the system Advocates also explored the resources available in Kansas to help teens transition into adulthood and strategies to empower them along the way
Guided by Program Manager, Sarah Emanuels, the training covered key topics such as social media awareness, cultural competency, and interactive role-playing exercises that allowed advocates to apply their learning in real-life scenarios With aging out presenting unique obstacles, Fostering Futures equips CASA advocates with the tools and knowledge to provide meaningful guidance, ensuring teens are better prepared for their next chapter
In 2024, CASAJWC strengthened its Peer Mentor Program, which provides peer-to-peer support for new and current advocates. Navigating the foster care system can be overwhelming, but experienced Peer Mentors offer guidance on court reports, home visits, technology, resources, and emotional support.
Led by Associate Program Director, Julie Kingsley, the program fosters community and builds advocate confidence. Each mentor is carefully selected, trained, and matched by their Program Supervisor. Last year, 32 advocates gained the confidence to move forward independently, while 18 Peer Mentors continued providing vital support. By empowering advocates, the Peer Mentor Program enhances CASA’s mission and strengthens outcomes for the children we serve.
CASA’s Divorce/Custody Program supports children involved in high-conflict family situations, ensuring their voices are heard in the courtroom. Led by Program Manager, Amorita Johnson, who celebrated her 26th anniversary with CASA in 2024, this program assigns trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children, gather objective information, and report findings to the court.
In Johnson County, about 85% of divorce cases are resolved through cooperative efforts, but in 12-15% of cases, intense conflict requires additional court services such as home studies or mediation. When communication breaks down and a child’s needs go unmet, a judge may appoint a Divorce/Custody CASA to advocate on the child’s behalf. In 2024, 23 advocates in this program supported 57 children, helping ensure their well-being during difficult family transitions.
