Helping to make a difference in a child’s life.
Every 45 seconds a child enters foster care. We know most children in foster care experience multiple foster homes, schools, social workers and teachers, while dealing with the trauma of abuse or neglect Research supports having a CASA/GAL volunteer can help improve the odds for these children and make a life-changing impact.
Consider donating and volunteering today. Your gift can make a difference in the life of a child. Get involved.

The CASA Volunteer Board has the critical role of partnering with the Summit County CASA Program to raise and administer funds for enhanced programming, personnel support, promoting public awareness of the CASA Program, and recognizing the efforts of CASA’s heroic volunteers In 2024, 152 CASA/GAL Volunteers advocated for 745 abused and neglected children in Summit County These numbers speak for themselves This program is critical to our community
2024 was an exciting year for fundraising. In the spring, we sold-out our inaugural “Key Up for CASA,” a dueling pianos fundraiser featuring the Cleveland Keys. This will become an annual event, and it is moving to a larger venue to allow for more guests In November, we held our annual breakfast where honored a graduating class of CASA/GAL Volunteers and featured the incredible speaker, Gaelin Elmore Elmore shared an important message on belonging through sharing his own experiences and trauma It is safe to say that everyone that attended that breakfast walked out feeling empowered to make a difference in a child’s life though simple acts of kindness
There has been a long-standing need and initiative to recruit more diverse volunteers. Specifically, males and minorities. In 2024 The CASA Board was awarded a grant that will allow us to initiate our male recruitment campaign. The work for this has already begun and I look forward to watching it transpire
It was an absolute honor to serve as Chair of the board for the last two years I am proud to say that every single board member is extremely active and provides a unique contribution It feels great to be a part of such an active group of “go getters” I have greatly enjoyed working with my Vice Chair and friend, Meredith Davis, and I am pleased to pass the torch to her to serve as the board for the next two years. She will be joined by Kim Miller who will serve as Vice Chair. These ladies are going to lead our group to continue to do great things.
When the problems of the world become overwhelming, I like to remember this quote “ As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person” (Paul Shane Spear)
Thank you for your support Together, we can change a child’s story

In 1993, the CASA Board Volunteer Association, Inc. was established to further the mission and support the work of the CASA/GAL Program of Summit County The Board partners with the Program by raising and administering funds for enhanced programming, personnel support, promoting public awareness of the CASA/GAL Program, and recognizing the efforts of heroic volunteers.
Our Vision is that the CASA/GAL Program of Summit County be a model for how very well the program works to protect the most vulnerable citizens of a community: children who have suffered abuse and neglect The CASA Board Volunteer Association, Inc is committed to ensuring that the local CASA program provides a thoroughly trained and well supported CASA/GAL volunteer to every child in Summit County who needs one Through the work of these caring and dedicated volunteers, we will advocate for all children in need, until they receive safe, permanent and nurturing homes
In order to guarantee the on-going success of the program, we will continually generate awareness of the plight of abused and neglected children, and will cultivate strong partnerships with individuals and organizations committed to bettering children’s lives. We will do this with integrity, compassion and devotion to our children
When a child welfare case begins, the courtroom is crowded with a judge, a representative from a children’s services agency, biological parents, family members, attorneys, other courtroom staff and, of course, the child. Even though the child should be the priority in the room, judges, caseworkers and service providers who determine the child’s future simply do not have adequate time or resources to understand the specific needs of each and every child.
By speaking for the child, a CASA/GAL volunteer is the voice of the child in the courtroom that ensures the wishes and needs of the child are not overlooked by the many competing interests at play.

At this year’s 12th Annual CASA Breakfast Fundraiser, we celebrated the theme of belonging and honored the commitment of those who make a difference in the lives of children across Summit County The morning included a powerful keynote by Gaelin Elmore, who shared insights on belonging and the importance of supportive communities for children in need

Key Up for CASA
The Key Up for CASA spring fundraiser was an evening full with laughter, networking, and music, thanks to the Cleveland Keys, who delivered an energetic dueling pianos performance featuring song requests from Bruce Springsteen to the Backstreet Boys
CASA/GAL volunteers, staff, board members, supporters, and community members came together at House 330 to enjoy lots of great food, drinks, and fabulous local items to bid on
Each year we look forward to the Toy Shop and the opportunity to spend time with our CASA/GAL volunteers, staff, and board members outside of court hearings and case conferences. This fun event allows volunteers to come and "shop" for the children on their cases, receive a gift from the CASA board, and mingle with other like-minded people.
The Toy Shop is made possible through the generosity of the Kimberly S. Denholm Charities, ensuring children with a CASA/GAL volunteer receive gifts and gift cards for the holiday season. On Black Friday, the Denholm family, joined by CASA board members, shopped for hundreds of children involved in Juvenile Court due to abuse or neglect allegations. This year, 354 children received gifts, bringing joy during a difficult time Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!

Alice Malik has spent her adult life striving to make a positive impact on children. After graduating from high school, she served as a professional dancer, performing on cruises and at Disney World Alice’s time as a performer led her to understanding the importance of children being able to “have a childhood” Alice went on to study Child and Family Development at the University of Akron where she learned about the Summit County CASA/GAL program. Alice was so moved by the program’s mission; she applied to become an intern. After completing her internship, Alice became employed with the CASA Program as a staff Guardian ad Litem. At the end of 2024, Alice made the difficult decision to leave the Juvenile Court; but not entirely. Alice is now serving as a CASA volunteer, continuing her desire to display “compassion in action”.
“I see a lot of the different possibilities and the different experiences that kids are going through, from a safety standpoint. It’s rattling, but it also drives me to be that much more motivated to help make as much of a difference as I can.”
“All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors--in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver”

With a generous grant from the Akron Bar Foundation, the CASA Board was able to send a ten person CASA team including the Director, Lead GAL, three staff attorneys, and five GAL volunteers to the Ohio CASA Conference. Funding supported registration, hotel fees, and mileage reimbursement so each could attend without any expenses. The Ohio CASA Conference was held in Columbus from September 25 - 27.
This team joined over 700 attendees from across the state to improve their knowledge and enhance their advocacy skills for abused and neglected children involved in juvenile court. Training sessions were offered by national experts on topics including foster children aging out of care, domestic violence, human trafficking, and the realities of living in poverty We are so grateful for the support from the Akron Bar Foundation!
