With the most winning trophies in the National Women’s Soccer League (in fact, they have seven) and as the only club in history to win both a NWSL and Women’s International Champion Cup in the same year, and the NC Courage is only getting started.

As Coach Sean Nahas enters his third year as head coach, his infectious enthusiasm for the game, the players, and the fans is visible. He approaches each year as an evolution and a blank slate, always striving to step up their game.

“I’ve been here for 20-plus years and came through the youth club, so having the ability to start at the youth level and now end up as first team coach, being able to coach in my backyard in my hometown, that’s a pretty cool feel,” Coach Nahas said. “I don’t take it for granted. I try to put my best foot forward for the players, the club, and the fans, so they feel as if they have something to be proud of.”

“Come to the stadium. Come watch. Come observe. Come watch training. Come see the work the players put in,” Coach Nahas said. “Some of the best players in the world are in Cary, North Carolina.”

The NC Courage remains committed to championing the role of women in sports, enhancing soccer accessibility, and nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment. To continue to forge meaningful bonds, they participate in community events, organize camps for underprivileged youth, and invite organizations to be a part of their game-day experiences. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, Raleigh Parks & Recreation, Harmony NC LGBT+ Allied Chamber of Commerce, 100 Black Men, Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Food Bank of Eastern and Central NC are among their network of community partners.

“Building relationships with community organizations provides an avenue for fans throughout the Triangle to connect with the Courage. Whether it’s participating in Out! Raleigh or hosting clinics for underprivileged youth, being engaged in the community is integral to who we are as an organization. We look forward to building upon existing and establishing new community partnerships,” said Francie Gottsegen, president of the North Carolina Courage and North Carolina Football Club.

WHEN DID YOU START SOCCER? I started playing soccer at 3 years old, and my mom was my first coach! Still to this day my mom always reminds me to have fun and enjoy the journey!

WHAT’S THE MOST EXCITING PLACE SOCCER HAS TAKEN YOU? Soccer has taken me not only all over the country but world, and has introduced me to so many people from such diverse backgrounds and cultures. I think one of my favorite places to play was La Manga, Spain, with the U23 USWNT in 2017.

With most Wake County residents getting their news from TV, and nearly 70 percent turning to WRAL, Morgan’s is a familiar face. FOR TONDALAYA PEARSON, owner and director of Cary Dance Productions, the last 29 years have been a cakewalk.

Jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, ballet, and acro classes are offered to dancers of all levels aged 2 and older; the studio’s ballet, tap, and tumble classes for younger dancers continue to be a step ahead.

The studio features five dance rooms and an acro room, all of which are equipped with hardwood professional spring floors, observation windows, and closed-circuit monitoring.

A facility of 8,000 square feet also allows for several homework stations and a café/birthday room, as well as a welcoming lobby with six flatscreen TVs to keep families engaged in their dancer’s education — which may explain why, as Pearson shared,

“we have so many thirdgeneration families at CDP today.”

The Anglins have certainly followed this lead, with their two daughters dancing at CDP for over 20 years. “Not only have they had the benefit of learning to be incredible dancers,” their parents Pam and Michael recognized, “but more importantly, to us, incredible leaders, role models, and people.”

On and off the dance floor, it’s clear that Pearson’s moves won’t be slowing down anytime soon. With the Cary Dance Productions stage set for an impressive milestone of three

decades in business in 2025, Pearson reflected on her “absolute joy and privilege to share her and her staff members’ love of dance” over the many years with several thousand Trianglearea dancers.

You’ve been dancing since you were a young child. When — and why — did you decide to open your own studio?

After my parents enrolled me in dance at 3 years old, they continued to foster my love for the arts by supporting me in music, singing, acting, and theater. Though my first love was performing on stage, I realized I also loved teaching dance; I spent most of my high school and college days teaching in local studios, as well as a lot of time studying and writing my own curricula. It was my dad who encouraged me to follow my dreams and open my own studio, and I will be forever grateful that he did.

Some of your instructors grew up dancing at CDP. How does this benefit your students?

We are so lucky to have the world’s best staff — they are incredible! Though a couple grew up dancing through the CDP program, our staff is extremely tenured. Many of our teachers have been at CDP for 10-plus years, which allows them to work seamlessly to benefit our dancers.

Can you share some of your current and former students’ successes?

Oh, if only I had the room to list them all! There are so many incredible accomplishments, from CDP students becoming collegiate dance members, dance teachers, Pilates and athletic trainers, professional dancers, and business owners. I’m grateful for social media, as it allows me to follow their lives and celebrate their careers and new families!

What are some upcoming CDP performances?

The spring season is filled with dance competitions and preparation for the spring recital, which is being hosted in downtown Raleigh at Duke Energy Center, a beautiful and professional venue for our dancers. Readers may have seen our famous CDP Sugarplums in the Cary or Apex parades, and we’ve just finished our 20th annual community benefit show (with proceeds being donated to a local charity). Our dancers also enjoy performing for local retirement homes and in special local performances.

CDP is again the proud recipient of a Maggy Award, in addition to years of hardearned choreography, prop, costume, and sportsmanship awards. But if you were to ask anyone on our staff about their favorite achievement, hands-down it is seeing the smiles on our students’ faces and receiving their big hugs. Feeling Stuck?

IF YOU FIND YOURSELF facing a “stuck” phase in your professional or personal life, you aren’t alone. It’s a common experience that many people face at some point, so don’t get discouraged. While feeling stuck can be frustrating and challenging, it also presents an opportunity to reassess your goals, make changes, and grow.

I’ve been there, and I’ve learned some great strategies to help work your way through when you feel stuck. Give them a try, and get ready for career and personal growth.

1. Reflect on your values and goals: Take some time to reflect on what truly matters to you. What are your core values? What are your long-term goals? When you take all the busy stuff away, what is it that you really want for yourself?

Finding the answers may take some time. Journaling your thoughts can help. Once you have clarity, it helps guide you in making decisions that align with those values and goals.

2. Identify areas for growth: Think about the areas in your career and life where you feel stuck. Is it a lack of challenge in your current job? Are you feeling unfulfilled in your personal life?

When you identify specific areas for growth, you can take targeted actions to address them and move forward. I, for example, like to be in rooms where decisions are being made, so I started being more present in planning meetings and found increased fulfillment.

3. Seek new opportunities: If you feel stuck in your current job, consider seeking out new opportunities within your current company or in the job market. This could involve taking on new projects, seeking a promotion, or exploring a career change altogether. By embracing new opportunities, you can open new possibilities for growth and development.

However, remember the grass is not always greener on the other side. Sometimes opening our minds and hearts to what’s already in front of us can make a big difference, too.

4. Invest in learning and development: Continuous learning is essential for personal and professional growth. I never want to stop learning! Look for opportunities to expand your skills and knowledge through workshops, courses, certifications, or online learning.

Investing in your own development can not only increase your value as an employee, but also provide a sense of accomplishment.

Learning to fly is a personal growth opportunity on my to-do list. Will I use it for work purposes? Who knows, but it’s

a personal accomplishment that can start many future conversations.

5. Network: Seeking mentorship can give you the support and guidance you need to get unstuck. Connect with people in your industry who can offer advice, share their experiences, and provide insight. A mentor can also provide a different perspective and help you navigate challenges.

Something I read years ago: Surround yourself with the type of person you want to be, and learn from them. Find people who embody your goals, and aim to follow their example.

6. Take on new challenges: Look for opportunities to take on projects that push you out of your comfort zone, expand your skills, and provide a sense of accomplishment. Stepping outside of your usual routine can bring renewed energy and motivation to your work and life.

Ignore imposter syndrome, another sneaky symptom many of us experience from time to time. You have many hidden talents that you have yet to discover, but you have to challenge yourself to let them shine.

7. Focus on personal well-being: Sometimes the stuck feeling is a sign you need to focus on yourself. Take care of your physical and mental health, practice self-care, and find ways to reduce stress. When you feel balanced and healthy, you’re better equipped to handle challenges and pursue growth opportunities.

One of the first steps I take when I feel stuck is making time every day to focus on my own happiness. I get my nails done, catch up on reading, or check something off my personal growth checklist. After all, who is going to show up for you if you don’t make time to show up for yourself?

8. Set clear intentions: You can’t make changes without a clear plan. Define specific goals and use them to create an action plan. Make a vision board — and put it up where you can see it!

Consistent, focused steps — even if they are small — will help keep you moving

forward. Promise yourself you will mark off a certain number of steps per week/month. I recently started with a list of my old bios and websites that needed updating. One by one, I completed them and felt proud to finish these overdue tasks.

9. Embrace failure and learn from it: Failure is a natural part of growth and development. I just saw this on social: “Successful people FAIL more than most people TRY, so keep going!” Instead of fearing failure, look at it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

10. Think positively: Filling your mind with gratitude and positivity can help shift your perspective and get you out of a mental rut. I know that seems like something every self-help book says, but it’s true. Focus on the things in your life that you’re grateful for, and practice positive affirmations to reinforce a mindset of growth and abundance. Not only will it help you, but others will see that positive mindset. It’s contagious!

Remember that feeling stuck happens to all of us — even when you love your job and life. It’s a temporary state, and it’s within your power to take positie steps forward. I’m excited for the growth ahead for you! Keep me posted and share your journey @EricaDeLong t

AS OF 2023, Apex has cemented it status as a boomtown, making headlines for its explosive growth and achieving star power as one of America’s best places to live.

The latest economic crown jewel is Veridea, a $3 billion mixed-use development containing over 1,000 homes and a large campus for business and education.

In the middle of the excitement for the future, the community has spent the last year celebrating the town’s sesquicentennial and reflecting on the Apex of 1873, which was a much different place to live and work than it is today.

That year, the North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the Town of Apex, then a small farm-to-market community, on the southwestern end of Wake County. On May 5, 1873, H.C. Olive was elected to serve as Apex’s first mayor.

On a recent damp late-winter evening, the Halle Cultural Arts Center in downtown Apex was a hub of history, with displays lining its hallways and first-floor meeting room for a reception — one of the final events in the yearlong celebration.

Longtime residents mingled with newcomers and gathered to swap stories and reflect on a place that is still part of small-town America in their hearts.

The town also created a booklet called The Passport to the Peak. Residents received stickers for their completed activities and traded their passports for commemorative gifts.

“Our celebration was based on the simple concept of building understanding, creating unity, and challenging our community to go all in with Apex,” said Kerrin Cox, communications coordinator with the Town of Apex and the staff leader for the celebration.

During the year, 170 volunteers working behind the scenes planned events and activities to showcase the town.

An oral history project called What Makes Apex Home features videos of 117 community members describing their love of the town.

“Apex means something unique to every single person who lives here, and we wanted that unique love to unify us, bring us together, and make us all proud to call this place home,” Cox said.

The town also created a series of banners describing different aspects of Apex’s history, from the Tuscarora populations and African American communities to the roles churches and schools played in shaping the town of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

The videos, banners, and other artifacts and materials will live on long after the celebration ends. The Apex 150 website and the Halle Cultural Arts Center will continue to display them, Cox said.

Apex officially closed out its observance with a commemorative play titled Forged in Fire , by writer and Apex native Warren Holleman.

Holleman, who now lives in Houston, recalled the Apex of his youth, when the town encompassed one square mile and the population was less than 2,000. He graduated from Apex High School in 1973 with 98 of his classmates.

“I am thrilled that the town is marking this anniversary and putting such an emphasis on honoring the past,” he said.

Forged in Fire tells the story of Apex through the eyes of two leading ladies: Mary Baldwin, who built schools and churches in town and whose sons built a Black Wall Street in Martinsville, Virginia; and Julia Montgomery Street, who became a beloved children’s book author.

The play is based on Warren and Toby Holleman’s award-winning book, Pluck, Perseverance, and Paint: Apex, North Carolina Beginnings to 1941

The Holleman brothers’ lives intersected with history when they were young men.

They recalled the day their father, who was the Apex town attorney, approached Toby and asked him to write the history of Apex for the town’s centennial in 1973.

“That year, I was a junior in college, and my father had come to me during the summer of 1972 and asked me to write a book on the history of Apex,” Toby Holleman said. “Dad helped me line up interviews with local townspeople, and that’s just what I did, along with Warren and Mama, and we wrote a book for the event.”

For the 150th Anniversary, the brothers updated the 1973 book and published its second edition last year.

At the February reception, Ashlee Taylor Layton enjoyed the exhibits and reception with her family. They had moved to Apex from Durham seeking a place with a small-town vibe. She has attended the street festivals, become acquainted with local government, and learned about the inner workings of the town.

“When I come to events like this, I actually recognize members of the town council and the mayor and the police chief,” she said. “I can’t believe I’ve lived here only two years because it feels like I’ve lived here forever.”

Mayor Jacques Gilbert is a lifelong resident of Apex and was elected the town’s first Black mayor in 2019. He was re-elected to his second term during the sesquicentennial year.

“The pace was a lot slower then, and despite the growth, I don’t think we’ve lost our small-town feel,” he said. “People still care for each other and look out for each other like in the early days.”

Today, Apex is home to more than 75,000 people and growing. The Apex Economic Development Commission estimates that more than 120,000 people will live in Apex by 2030.

Gilbert hopes that despite the changes coming, the town will continue building on the small-town values its founding fathers built when Apex was first chartered.

“We are making rapid changes, and for some it may be too fast,” he said. “My goal is to make people in the community feel a part of things, and I believe we’re moving in a positive direction.” t

At True ABAlities Preparatory School, success is defined differently. For Founder & Executive Director Lauren (Brennan) Womble and her teaching team, it’s the 11-yearold child who — for the first time — blows out the candles on their birthday cake.

Working for two decades with neurodivergent children has taught Womble that learning environments are failing to ask: “What are we trying to get to?”

After being introduced to a program based on a functional application of Applied

Behavioral Analysis designed to apply to students with various needs, Womble discovered that “When services are set up to serve learners in a way that result in long-term adult outcomes, it’s night and day what you see.”

So, when she returned to North Carolina and found nothing similar in existence, Womble “wanted to create it.”

And create it she did.

Relying on the Pyramid Education Approach, which, as Womble said, “roots us all,” TAPS teachers use a teaching strategy

that breaks complex topics into smaller and more manageable parts for their neurodiverse learners between the ages of 4 and 18.

The Cary private school is Womble’s answer to the critical yet unasked question. As she explained: “The goal is for these learners to develop into adults who are happy and healthy and able to live a well-rounded life — and that’s all neurodiverse individuals, regardless of impact of their neurodiversity.”

When it comes to the long-term outlook for TAPS learners, “We want them in jobs,” Womble said. “We want them to live as independently as possible. We want them to have a community that they’re a part of. We want them to have hobbies. We want them to have health and wellness, exercise, knowing how to eat well. We want them to have everything that all of us want for ourselves.”

For TAPS’ 21 current learners, placement is based not on age but on level of language. “We look through the lens of language” when it comes to placing and serving students, Womble explained, as “language drives everything.”

As such, the school comprises four different programs and two tracks, with the social-emotional track suited for fully developmentally appropriate learners with their language who require support with highlevel social skills and emotional regulation.

The second track is functional communication, which occurs in 4–8 and 12–18-yearold classrooms and serves learners who are nonvocal or may have a communication system that isn’t being used in a functional way to convey their basic wants and needs.

“A hundred percent of the time,” Womble asserted, learners and their families come to TAPS frustrated and fearful.” Parents have often gone to multiple places and trusted multiple people with their learner, only to end up distraught when things don’t go well. “It’s a trauma,” Womble said. “And their children are getting traumatized.”

Indeed, from disliking school to distrusting teachers, TAPS teachers find that much of their initial attention is focused on repairing the student-teacher relationship and helping learners feel safe in their educational setting.

“It breaks my heart to tell parents there’s a wait list,” Womble said. “We have so many families waiting for us to open that next room” — which would fill the current unserved 9–12-year-old group.

About TAPS’ word-of-mouth recognition, Womble shared: “There’s not a truer measure of whether we’re doing what we set out to do than what people are saying in the community about us.” After all, “We’re not here for the successes that we see in our classrooms every day,” Womble said. “We’re here for the successes that happen at home because that’s where it matters: out in the community.”

“We want to broaden a child’s life,” Womble explained about TAPS’ long-term approach. Often, for families with neurodiverse children, their world has become quite small. “Everything we do is to expand and open that world back up.”

For the TAPS teachers doing so, “It has to be a calling,” Womble said. “This feeds their soul. This is purpose for them.” With TAPS teachers using their own vehicles to transport learners out into the community every week, an activity integral to learners’ adult outcomes, Womble shared: “It would be amazing to have some sort of transportation for the kiddos.”

munity will require funding — people feeling what Womble described as a “tugging on their heart” that compels them to act. Having outgrown their building, TAPS’ 9–12-year-old room — along with a “laundry list of services” she’s eager to unveil — is on hold.

Itdidn’t take long for locals to wholeheartedly embrace SAAP, Chef Lon Bounsanga’s bustling new Laotian restaurant in downtown Cary. Perhaps to no one’s surprise, the readers of Cary Magazine just voted it Best New Restaurant for 2024.

“We’re so grateful and honored to be selected to receive this award,” said Bounsanga recently during an afternoon conversation at SAAP, which means “delicious” or “yummy” in Laotian.

Located on the ground floor of The Walker upscale apartment community near the Downtown Cary Park, the 70-seat eatery has quickly become a sought-out dining destination. Bounsanga, a native of Laos and the erstwhile executive chef at Raleigh’s popular Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana, opened SAAP in November 2023.

For his latest venture, Bounsanga encouraged immediate family members to join him — from his wife and co-owner Annmarie Bounsanga to the couple’s four adult daughters, several of whom work as servers while one helps bartend and another handles general manager duties.

“The reason my family is here is because they want to be here,” the chef-owner said. “We are all family oriented, and we love being together.”

Annmarie agrees but adds that her husband isn’t the only family member with extensive experience in professional food service.

“All the girls grew up in the restaurant industry, so it comes second nature to them,” she said. “I work in the medical field, so this is new to me.”

Inside SAAP, a modern 2,600-square-foot space features sage-colored walls, natural wooden tables, stylish light fixtures, and copious windows that span from floor to ceiling.

Chef Bounsanga indicates that Laotian cuisine is influenced by Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, and Thai cultures.

“It’s all about using fresh ingredients and spices,” he explained. “Laotian food is very savory, and we’re serving a lot of street food like I grew up eating.”

Elements like fish sauce, Thai chilis, and galanga — a root similar to ginger — are primary components in many of the eatery’s dishes.

While SAAP sources its provisions from various Asian markets, the restaurant also will receive some donated produce from sustainability-minded Burkett Farm in Cary and will in turn give back to a local charity.

“We plan to give some proceeds from sales to a designated nonprofit, which this spring will be Haven House,” Annmarie said.

The menu at SAAP features an equally tempting assortment of small and large plates. Chef Bounsanga suggests ordering a variety of dishes to share with others at the table.

Popular lunchtime options include Green Papaya Salad with charred pork chop or the Crying Tiger version involving grilled beef steak. SAAP’s Banh Mi sandwich comes piled with pickled daikon and carrot, pate, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapenos, and either lemongrass chicken, grilled pork belly, or tofu.

When it comes to small plates, order the irresistible Ginger Chicken Satay served with sweet peanut chili sauce or the perfectly chargrilled BBQ Pork Skewers. Or, for a decidedly different umami experience, try the lemongrass-infused Lao Herb Sausage accompanied with an earthy Jeow Bong chili paste sauce and staple side item sticky rice.

Best-selling large plate selection Pad Lao features caramelized fried noodles brimming with shallots, bean sprouts, peanuts, cilantro, egg crepe, garlic, and soy sauce. Protein options for the dish include pork belly, tofu, chicken,

plump tiger shrimp.

“This dessert is like an Asian version of pumpkin pie,” Chef Bounsanga said with a winsome smile. “Every part of it is edible, even the skin of the kabocha squash.”

Consider pairing your meal with a Southeast Asian-inspired specialty cocktail like the rum-based Ube Colada, the Mekong River Rush with habanero-pervaded mezcal, or The Mantra with vodka, lychee, elderberry liqueur, and lemon juice. Zero-proof offerings include Hibiscus Spritz, Sparkling Rose Tea, and Laos in Chai, which comprises chai with fresh pineapple, coconut cream, and lime.

White and red wine is offered by the glass or bottle. The restaurant’s bar also dispenses local craft beer on draft or from cans.

The Edible Oddity: Patty Pan Squash

FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN BOTH LOOKS AND TASTE, GROW PATTY PAN SQUASH IN YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN THIS YEAR.

VETERAN VEGETABLE gardeners will tell you that summer squash is an easy edible to grow, whether you start from seeds or purchase young plants. But opinions split over the best type to try. Crook-neck connoisseurs stand by their squash, while straight-laced straight-neck growers disagree. Then, there’s the zucchini zealots just waiting their turn.

I’ve grown and enjoyed all three, but if asked for my favorite, I would check the “None of the Above” box. Instead, the squash that has turned my head and tingled my taste buds for years is a lesser-known delight: patty pan.

Patty pan squash — also called scalloped squash — takes the prize for weird summer squash looks because it is flat, round, and has wavy edges, like Grandma’s pies or a flying saucer.

It is easy to think such an odd squash must be a 21st century genetically modified Franken-veggie, but patty pan was actually an easy find in Colonial America, with the heirloom ‘Early White Bush’ variety common in 18th century vegetable patches.

‘Early White Bush’ is still readily available today, but it has competition for garden space from newer cultivars such as ‘Peter Pan,’ an AllAmerican Selections winner producing squash awash in a pleasing green hue. Want snazzier? ‘Sunburst’ (another AAS winner) shines in sizzling yellow cooled by splotches of rich green.

This unusual squash is grown the usual squash way, with mid-April being a good time to start planting patty pan. But first, gardeners, prepare thy soil! Pick a sunny, well-draining site and turn over the dirt, mixing in gobs of organic matter such as compost, rotted manure, or enriched commercial topsoil. To allow sunshine to

continue warming up the growing ground, hold off on mulching the site until mid-May.

Patty pan plantings should be spaced about 2 to 3 feet apart. If you keep this strange squash healthy and happy, expect to begin the harvest in a little over a month for set plants and about two months if grown from seed. For the best flavor, pick the patty pans when they are about 3 to 4 inches in diameter.

To me, patty pan tastes just a tad sweeter than other squash. I have also found it to be a very versatile veggie because, whether sautéed, grilled, fried, or steamed, it’s a treat. There are plenty of tempting recipes to be found online, too, with many hollowing out the centers and refilling with goodies such as onions, mushrooms, cheese, herbs, or bacon. Yummy! t

Cast iron plant (Aspidistra sp.) is as advertised: a tough evergreen perennial that can provide a constant verdant color to shady areas, even in winter. However, cold, arid winds can dry leaves to the point they become ragtag with streaks of brown splotches. Such damaged foliage can be pruned out early this month to perk up this handsome plant. In fact, if the entire clump of your established cast iron plant looks worn, go ahead and clip all the old leaves down to about 2-inch nubs. Such a severe pruning will encourage new foliage to come roaring back by midsummer. 12 3 9 6

To Do in the GARDEN April

• Along with patty pan and typical squash types, the middle of this month is also a good time plant other summer edibles such as lima beans, cucumbers, green beans, peppers, and tomatoes.

• Can’t wait until the middle of this month to get growing in the veggie patch? Early April works for planting cool-season goodies such as Swiss chard, spinach, radishes, mustard greens, leaf lettuce, leeks, kale, and collards.

• If you noticed an established daffodil bed has begun to sputter with its spring flower shows over the last few years, it could be a classic case of overcrowded plants. Let their leaves wither and turn brown before clipping them back. Then, wait until July to dig up, separate, and replant the dormant bulbs farther apart.

• Your fine-feathered garden friends will be working overtime with spring activities this month, so don’t forget to clean the birdbath and refill it with fresh water at least once a week.

The fifth annual Folds of Honor NC Scholarship Fundraiser will take place at Prestonwood Country Club on April 22. The golf tournament gives six-person teams a chance to win hole-in-one prizes on an 18-hole par 3 course, including trips, $10,000 in cash, and a $1 million hole.

The Folds of Honor Foundation grants scholarships to children and spouses of fallen and disabled military service members and first responders. Teen Morrisville 101, an annual class aimed at familiarizing students with local government, will take place Wednesdays in May at the Morrisville Town Hall. Participants will look at career options available in local government, chat with local employees about their jobs, participate in group activities, and more. Enrollment is open to all area students, with preference given to Morrisville residents.

April kicks off BANDS, BITES & BOATS, a free monthly event with music, food, and after-hours boat rentals at the Bond Park Boathouse. Each month features a different local band and food truck along with beverages from a local brewery. The series runs on the first Friday of each month through October. The Town of Morrisville celebrated Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, with a festival at the Cedar Fork Community Center March 16. Holi is celebrated worldwide and is open to all faiths and cultures. The event had a theme of unity and featured dancing, Holi powders, food and artisan vendors, and musical performances.

“The Holi festival is celebrated as a way to welcome in spring and to give people the chance to release their inhibitions and enjoy a new beginning,” according to the Town of Morrisville.

As part of Women’s History Month, Apex hosted

on March 10. The event featured a panel discussion with local engineers, designers and professionals who contributed to the Apex Senior Center, Apex Friendship Middle School, Rodgers Family Skate Park, and other landmarks, followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of Pleasant Park.

Apex will celebrate Earth Day with EARTHFEST on April 20 from noon to 4 p.m. at Apex Town Hall. Skilled helpers will host a Repair Café, where attendees can bring broken household items like appliances, furniture, toys, jewelry, and more to learn how to repair them.

Love Pimento Cheese? You’re in luck! Cary is home to the only festival in the nation devoted to the Southern specialty. The 2024 PIMENTO CHEESE FESTIVAL will fill Downtown Cary Park on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering novel dishes like pimento cheese ice cream and fried shrimp with pimento cheese grits, as well as traditional menus from local food trucks. The event will also feature live music, activities, and beverages from local breweries, plus a pimento cheese sculpting contest.

FOOD WASTE DROP-OFF SITE AT MILLS

PARK in February, one year after the pilot location became a permanent service. A 2019 study showed that food waste made up 27.4% of Cary’s single-family residential waste. The first drop-off site opened at Citizen’s Convenience Center in 2022. So far, the pilot site has had more than 27,000 drop-offs and collected 80 tons of material, which is composted and returned to Cary’s Good Hope Farm.

“Cary continues to develop long-term strategies and is taking an adaptable approach to make food waste diversion easy and accessible for citizens,” said Assistant Town Manager Danna Widmar. “This commitment is crucial in extending the landfill’s life and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and is supported by local partnerships and community collaboration.”

Students at Kiddie Academy of West Cary celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day with 500 acts of kindness on Feb. 17. They delivered flowers and thank-you cards to first responders and created a paper chain to show how much kindness they spread.
