The overlapping of work and private spaces morphed “home” into a concept inclusive of life beyond dwelling, becoming wombs that nourish basic human needs, integrating its occupants to the metaverse as it supersedes reality.

In this future, “homes” are app rented mobile pods. No ownership.

The idea of microhome conjures up an image of an intimately scaled wooden box sitting in a field of grass (figure 1.a). A beautiful vacation cabin, but not a home connected to society. Living in nature does not equate to living sustainably. The commute into the city, and the need for more storage due to a lack of nearby shops would be harmful for the environment; there also exists the potential of urban sprawl if these small-scale housing becomes mainstream. LEVEL//UP is designed to further densify the city by fitting in its many disused spaces (figure 1.b). It reflects the urban verticality typology and enables its user to connect with otherwise neglected urban spaces. This is achieved by extending the circulation, allowing a “backdoor” access at a different, much higher, elevation (figure 3.). The new urban frontier this multi-elevation typology opens would change the urbanscape. These homes can butt-up against the hideous blank walls of big box stores and take advantage of their under-utilized roof spaces (figure 6.a), activating these spaces beyond normal business hours, and thus becoming the new “over-the-shop” homes.

They can attach to abandoned office complexes, providing a private access to spaces primed for adaptive reuse (figure 6.b). Or they could simply attach onto steep hillsides or fit into alleys and overpasses (figure 6.c).

To stack modern comforts vertically within the confines of microhome sizing would result in a house of stairs (figure 2) - especially if these stairs are not a compromise of the standard stair dimensions.

LEVEL//UP embraces this condition and tucks its programs underneath the stairs (figure 1.c). Dynamic configurations of the stair treads allow the spaces to tranfigurate into multiple uses (figure 4).

Being within the city, these units can easily plug into the city infrastructure. However, the structure itself is self-sustaining - the steep slope that wraps around the stairs provides a large surface for solar energy and rainwater catchment (figure 3). Water collected are filtered and stored in cells within the wall - acting as a trombe wall for thermal regulation. The building height would also be beneficial in thermal regulation, acting as a cooling tower, allowing heat to dissipate from the skylight as well as catching wind into the domicile. Any extra resources can be feed back to the neighbourhood via public infrastructure (if connected). The insulation and facade of sustainably sourced cork would be ideal to keep the city noise out as well as regulating temperature.

Creating urban oases, and provide more housing opportunity in cities that caters to the lifestyle of young professionals; thus, leveling up our society.

a restored medieval facade Yet, unplanned ‘hot mess’ are the charms of Europe; visible stories told through palimpsest. Thus, as hideous as it might seem, the post-war building will not be dismantled, but modified and used as a scaffold to be built upon.

The proposal here is to package life as part of one’s everyday journey: a multi-modal transportation hub + a one-stop-shop on your daily commute. It is to be a place where journeys engage each other at the heart of a city.

the Spanish Steps is a nice parallel as a place meant for transport/ circulation cum a place to linger.

Lets pretend the proposed Cascadia High Speed Rail exists, linking Vancouver, BC to Eugene, OR. The elevated track (not my design) will run parallel to the interstate highway - further dividing the two sides of highway. The site, across downtown Portland, is currently a ‘transit hub’ - but its design is a messy knot of roadways catering only to vehicular needs. The surrounding stadium/convention centers create a chance for life that is not utilized.
