2025 - 2026 CARTHAGE THEATRE PRESENTS

February 25, 27 | 7:30 pm

February 28 | 3:00 pm

Studio Theatre

“Dear Elizabeth” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

Though American poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell lived worlds apart from each other, they exchanged hundreds of letters with each other over the course of three decades. Sarah Ruhl compiles these letters in a heartfelt story of these two poets’ friendship. about the show

I began working on “Dear Elizabeth” in November 2024, and it has since blossomed into something truly special. It is not only my first full production as a Director, but I also took on the roles of Scenic and Sound Designer. It has been a blessing to create a place to share this story with the world. It’s not just my passion project, it has been a collaborative effort on all sides. My production team is made up almost entirely of incredibly talented Carthage students, and I am honored to give them the space to share their work as well. The music throughout this show has been specifically curated for each moment, and I invite you to scan the QR code on the letters attached to your seat to access the ““Dear Elizabeth”” playlist. Special thanks to Jacob Muller, a fellow Carthage student, for letting us use his music in our production. Go check him out on all streaming platforms.

“I do think free will is sewn into everything we do; you can’t cross a street, light a cigarette, drop saccharine in your coffee without really doing it. Yet the possible alternatives that life allows us are very few, often there must be none.”

Robert Lowell, Letter 161, August 15, 1957

The Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
