Mornings Innocent

I wear your smile upon my lips

Arising on mornings innocent

Your laughter overflows my throat

Your skin is a fleece about me

With your princely walk I salute the sun

People say I am handsome

Arising on mornings innocent

Birds make the sound of kisses

Leaves flicker dark and light like eyes

I melt beneath the magnet of your gaze

Your husky breath embraces my ear

Alert and fresh as grass I wake and rise on mornings innocent

~ May Swenson

Confitemini Domini

Confitemini Domini quoniam bonus: Quoniam in saeculum misericordia ejus. Alleluia.

~ Psalm 118

The Open Hand

When the breath you take doesn’t reach deep enough, When you look outside, and it seems too bright, When nothing feels like your own, and you’re all alone, I will open my hand.

When you feel like you can’t, even though you’ve been told a thousand times that you can,

Confitemini Domini

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.

texts and

When your best attempts only result in cuts and bruises, When nothing feels like your own, and you’re far from home, I will open my hand.

If you hold your hand closed, nothing good can come in. The open hand is blessed, for it gives as it receives.

When the journey ahead feels impossible to face,

When you stand at the threshold, frozen by the weight of the steps you must take,

When nothing feels like your own, and you’re all alone, I will open my hand.

Will you open your hand? I will open my hand.

Ma Navu

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good tidings: of salvation and peace.

~ Isaiah 52:7

Thither Will I Go Light looked down and beheld Darkness.

Thither will I go, said Light. So Light came and shone.

Peace looked down and beheld War. Thither will I go, said Peace. So Peace came and gave rest.

What is this

What is this Makhanana (the boat keeper)

It is is a ship from Germany Look, look, look Makhanyana It is a ship from Germany

Note: The origin of this song is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to the sinking of the SS Mendi, a British steamship which carried black South African troops to France to fight against the Germans during World War I. On February 21, 1917, the ship was hit by another ocean liner during a terrible fog, causing it to sing and killing all 600 soldiers on board—most of whom could not even swim. As with many stories, over the decades the truth is bent and as a result we have the story of the Makhananan (the boat keeper) who is blamed (by angry passengers on board) for a German ship being full of holes.

~ Trans. Michael Barrett

Love looked down and beheld Hatred. Thither will I go, said Love. So Love came and brought Life.

My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord In the Lord, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Hallelujah!

Before I’d stay in hell one day, I’d sing and pray myself away. Goin’ shout an’ pray and never stop, Until I reach the mountain top. Do you love him? Oh yes!

Hallelujah! God almighty. Are you anchored? Yes I’m anchored. Will you serve Him? Oh yes!

Hallelujah!

Will you praise Him? Oh yes!

Hallelujah!

Lord, I’m anchored, Lord I love you. Yes, I’ll serve you. Lord, I’ll praise you.

My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Before the ending of the day

Before the ending of the day, Creator of the world, we pray That with thy wonted favor, Thou Would'st be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes, From nightly fears and fantasies; Tread under foot our ghostly foe, That no pollution we may know.

Leron, Leron sinta

Leron, Leron sinta, Buko ng papaya,

Dala-dala’y buslo, Sisidlan ng bunga.

Pagdating sa dulo’y, Nabali ang sanga. Kapos kapalaran, Humanap ng iba.

Gumising ka, neneng; Tayo’y manampalok.

Dalhin mo ang buslong, Sisidlan ng hinog.

Pagdating sa dulo’y, Lalamba-lambayog.

Kumapit ka, neneg, Baka ka maulog.

Ang iibigin ko’y

Lalaking matapang.

Baril niya ay pito; Sundang niya ay siyam. Ang lalakarin niya’y Parte ng dinulang.

Isang pinggang pansit Ang kanyang kalaban.

Leron, Leron, my dear

Leron, Leron, my dear Blossoms of the papaya tree, With a bamboo basket, He’d gather some fruits.

But when he reached the top (of the tree),

The branch broke.

Oh, what a trick of fate, He had to search for another.

Wake up, neneng*; Let’s pick some tamarind fruits.

Take the bamboo baskets, To put the ripe ones in.

Upon reaching the top (of the tree), The branches swayed heavily.

Hold on tight, neneng*,

As you might fall.

The one I will love

Is a fearless man. He has seven guns

And nine knives.

The journey he will take

Is the distance of a table.

A plate of noodles

Is his foe!

Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.

Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, Et nunc et semper, Et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

~ Luke 2:29-32

Lord, let now thy servant depart Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen.

The Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrived in this place—alive and strong, andthis calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
