Lawrence River Station

About

4-9 fourth year studio project With a team of three we designed a Train Station for Lawrence with a park element.

My name is Carter Wiens, I am currently studying at Kansas State University pursuing my Masters in Architecture. While in school I have been heavily involved in AIAS FBD. I was in charge of a project we did for a local nonprofit here in Manhattan. Outside of school I have been working with my grandfather converting a concrete stave silo into a vacation rental. about the silo.

Apart of a design competition we designed a consulate + cultural center for ECOWAS in Topeka, Kansas

Located in Senegal, CERAAS works close with K-State agriculture to research farmland, theyn are looking to develop an Innovation Center to expand their research.

I lead a team of students through a design build project for a local nonprofit here in Manhattan.

During the summer of 2022 I assisted my grandfather in converting a 100 year old concrete stave silo into a vacation rental.

on the back side of the canopy another ramp down to the ground provides access to the community park where there is access to pedestrian walkways, a sculpture garden, and an amphitheater

concept CONNECT TRAILS To engage the other side of the river we connect the Levee Trail with the Lawrence loop through a large canopy roof that allows bikers and walkers to easily get across without being disturbed by vehicles.

The entire building was designed using mass timber.

Lowered ceilings were used to help define the main circulation throughout the building.

An outdoor space adjacent to the library allowed users to have a shaded, comfortable space to read and enjoy their book.

Off the sidewalk circulation, is a covered seating space for the public to enjoy and allows them to engage with the site.

Carved on the east side of the building is a light well bringing light down to the second floor.

Early in the design process, the examination of the relationship between spaces in section were looked at. Primarily at the space at the front of the building, this is where nature connects the entry to the cultural center above. The relationship of

these spaces were both functional in the building but meaningful in the architecture.

The tree symbolized the importance on trees and central gathering spaces within African culture. This tree allows these spaces to connect through section.

Upon entry into the building a visual connection is established to the tree. The user is interested in what the space above is. Inside the vertical circulation is placed directly adjacent to the entry for easy access to the second and third floor, those being the most public spaces. On the second floor the tree is still visible and allows people to gather in the

double height space. This can serve as a resting space or a waiting space for the theater and gallery located on the second floor. Moving up to the third floor the connection to the tree is overlooking the space below. The third floor houses the library and access the theater from above.

Gathering Space on Second Floor This view of the gathering space is located on the southwest side on the second floor. The gathering space is interior but has a direct connection to the tree allows people to overlook the capital through the perforated screen that wraps the second and third floors of the building.

Reading Exterior Patio for the Library Located on the west side of the third story the exterior reading space adjacent to the library allows users to comfortable relax outside in a shaded environment. Along the screen is a space for planting. Allowing for spaces like this one appear around the design further connects the user to green space.

A detailed wall section of the third story exterior reading space is shown to the right. Shown is the construction of the perforated metal screen and the structure tying it back to the mass timber structure. A roof paver system is used for the exterior patio space. To accommodate the plants, the paver were removed and dirt was filled in.

Located on the north side of the design is a courtyard below grade to provide a cooler space for employees to enjoy.

For a good portion of the day the building itself provides shade.

The cafe cantilevers over a stepped planting system helping to cool the lower courtyard

Between each greenhouse a space is carved for a connection between the greenhouse and cafe to be established.

On top of the green houses a slated green roof pointing toward the south shading the interior spaces. Clerestories are added to the north to allow light in. An operable skylight can open or close depending on the need of the greenhouse

Reading Exterior Patio for the Library Ceraas campus is a walk only campus with a parking lot on the east side.

The entry of the site is adjacent to the Mbolo Plaza and is pushed back behind the Admin and the Atrium building to allow the user to engage with the building.

Public vs Private circulation of the Innovation Hubs are important to give the scientists a easy entry to their labs but allow the public or the rest of the campus to enjoy the amenities of the cafe and forum.

In the hot-dry climate of Senegal, shading and green roofs were utilized throughout the building to help cool the building.

On the second floor, the Innovation hubs are surrounded with exterior relationship of either a courtyard or a green roof. This provides the users to feel like they have a connection to nature.

The forum is a central space of the building.

Able to hold large team meetings are all of campus events.

The elevator and bathrooms are held in a core to separate the public vs private spaces of the building

Innovation Hubs are open spaces that promote a collaborative work environment but is still sectioned off to hot spot work spaces, mixing spaces and the technology space

Wonder Workshop is a Manhattan area youth program that aims to promote an education in the arts, sciences, and humanities through various hands-on activities and lessons.

Founded by Richard Pitts in 1989, the organization began as an after-school program called “Hooked on Clubs”. In 1994, the organization opened a museum where members of the community could view interactive exhibits.

Both the after-school program and the museum are made possible by high school and adult volunteers from the Manhattan area.

Before, the space was separated in a layout that focused the teens and the activity space. This was functional but the client wanted a teen space that was separate, private from the activity space.

After, shifting the teen space to the most private area allowed the activity space to be the main focus of the basement. When you go downstairs this is the first thing you see. It is right next to the beautiful murals that were existing in the space.

After a fresh coat of paint and the construction of the storage shelves, the craft table and the teens work station the project is complete. Providing wonder workshop with a new space to bring new life to their basement space is a great opportunity for us at Freedom by Design.

Along with being in charge of the project, I also took responsibility to the construction of the craft table. This very simple table provides Wonder Workshop with a table that gives the kids a nicer space to work on. The table is also on wheels to allow WW to move the table if they ever need to adjust the table. The table was constructed using 2x4 and 3/4 inch plywood.

The silo is located on my grandparents farm. In 2018 they built a cabin where they rent out as a vacation rental.

The silo has been on the land for an estimated 100 years and have stayed in good condition. My grandpa has dreamed of turning it into a vacation rental but has debated on whether or not he should do it. He could not find any resources or other people that have done this before so it worried him.

During the summer of 2022, I spent my time working with him to construct this. I helped him visualize the design through drawings and diagrams along with learning a ton about construction.

Gaining the experience of how things are built is a very valuable skill to have as an architect and one we might not gain enough experience in school.

Construction of the Addition

Second Floor - Bedroom

After the opening of the silo was done, a steel frame was inserted into the space to keep the strength of the bands. An addition was needed since the opening wasnt wide enough for a sandard 36” door. This gave us more square footage where we placed all of the electrical and water tanks. The kitchen along with the washer and dryer is also placed this is addition.

The first bedroom is placed on the second floor where it will sleep three people through a bunk bed.

A double sized bottom bunk and a twin top bunk will be used to maximize the space. A small closet will be placed under the stairs to allow the guests to place some of the belongings away.

Progress of Construction on the Third Floor

Octagon Roof Construction

Looking up into the third floor where the full bathroom will be placed is the progess of the construction. Every floor is constructed the same and we just repeat it on the way up. We start with painting the concrete walls with a waterproof paint to keep condensation to build up on the interior structure. Next we place floor joists on the wall sections from the floor below then the sub floor is placed on top of that. Once we have that done 32” wall section are built and placed around the primeter. We then repeat the process until we are to the top of the silo.

Looking up at the crane lowering the octagon roof onto the silo. We did this becuase it prevented us from having to finish the exterior of the roof 50’ up in the air.

The roof is sitting on the wall sections we constructed so we are not relying on the 100 year old concrete blocks.

Custom Circular Stair Construction The stairs wrap around the interior of the silo trying to maximize the space within the rooms. All of the stairs are angled back to the center of the room to keep the treads the same size. Stringers are attached to the walls and 2x4 blocks support the treads.
