“Complicating things is easy, simplifying them is hard. All you have to do to complicate things is to add more stuff, anything you want colors, forms, actions, decorations, characters, settings filled with things. Everyone is able to complicate things. Only few are able to simplify them.”
- Bruno Munari

I am Carson Ewing. I am a 5th year architecture student at the University of Arkansas. In my time as a student I have grown a passion to create spaces of meaning and purpose that aim to honor both creation and its creator. In the world there is chaos and brokeness, but spaces have the ability to bring order and generate opportunities for community and cultivation. My desire is to grow in my ability to create these spaces in ways that serve others and bring them together.

primavalle culture hub trellis for cultivation
This project is based in Primavallle, a periphery neighborhood of Rome, Italy in need of urban regeneration. Beginning with a masterplan proposal of an underserved Anna Bracci park, this scheme evolved into an attempt to revitalize the neighborhood through the idea of cultivation. This idea is enforced through the incorporation of a cultural center and museum. Both of these structures, paired with public space amenities such as piazzas, public gardens, and an ampitheater, aim to generate a new axis that creates a more permeable Primavalle and connects it to the rest of Rome. The trellis provides structure for culture to grow!

fayetteville prayer room
Within the urban context of Fayetteville exists the chaos of contemporary, fast paced, secularism. The aim of this project is to tap into the Christian ideaology of heart, mind, and soul in order to emphasize a meeting place with the God of creation. The design aims to implement spatial and formal strategies to create a space of simultaneous solitude and community that helps followers of Jesus to better connect with their Father in Heaven.

weaving ground little rock sports complex
This project began with group site analysis and concept proposals, which overall helped lead to a discovery of two “faces” of this site located on the Arkansas River. Through this discovery and the pursuit of incorporating multi-faceted design strategies (HVAC, structure, + landscape), the concept of the building as a continuous landscape emerged. Through the design process the ground and the building become one as the ground is seemingly pulled, pushed, bended, + folded. Overall, the main goal was developing a comprehensive understanding of building and ground through the use of building systems within the design process.

los angeles office center city void
The “City Void” is a project located within an underserved area of downtown LA, adjacent to a large public plaza (Pershing Square). The project is based around form and context, as the form derives from the desire to connect the program to its context. The ground opens up to create a permeable plaza for pedestrians, while the form of the office program aims to create a visual connection to the inner courtyard and the outer Pershing Square. After the form is established a louver system is added to control shading based on sun patterns. This creates a cloak over the existing form and suporting structure, allowing it to blend into the surrounding context.
