INTRODUCTION
ThisrepairmanualprovidesthetechnicalinformationneededtoproperlyservicetheNewHolland MC22,MC28,andMC35tractors.Usethismanualin conjunctionwiththeoperator’smanualforcomplete operation,adjustment,andmaintenanceinformation.
OnNewHollandequipment,leftandrightare determinedbystandingbehindtheunit,lookingin thedirectionoftravel.

HARDWARE
GENERAL
TheMC22,MC28,andMC35tractorshavebeen builtusingmetrichardware.
NOTE: Besuretousethehardwarespecifiedwhen usingtappedholes,astryingtoinstallametricboltin aninchthread,oraninchboltinametricthread,will damagethethread.
Certainhardwaremustbetightenedtospecific torquespecifications.Ifspecifictorquespecifications arenotnoted,tightenthehardwaretothestandard torquechartspecificationlistedinthismanual.
PLATING
HardwareusedonNewHollandbalersisplatedwith zincchromate(goldcolor).Goldcoloredhardware hasdifferenttorquingrequirementsfromunplatedor zincplated(silvercolor)hardwarebecauseofthe differenceinthecoefficientoffrictionoftheplating material.Thetorquechartsinthismanuallistthe correctspecificationsforgold,silver,andunplated bolts.
NUTTIGHTENING
Wheneverpossible,thenutshouldbetightened,not theheadofthebolt.Whentighteningusingthebolt head,theclamploadcanbelostbecausesomeof thetorqueappliedtwiststheboltinsteadof tensioning(stretching)it.Thetensionontheboltis whatholdsthejointtogether.
Approximately90%ofthetorqueappliedduring assemblygoestoovercomingfrictionbetweenthe parts.Theother10%isusedtotension(stretch)the bolt.Afterassembly,thefrictionalforcesdisappear, whichisthebasisforthesaying“Ifitdoesnotfail duringassembly,itwillnotfailinservice.”Thebolt maylaterfailduetootherfactors,butnotfrombeing overtightened.
LOCKNUTS
Mostlocknutsarecoatedwithaspeciallubricantthat isdrytothetouch.Anytimealocknutisused,alower thannormaltorqueisrequired.Refertothetorque chartsinthismanualforspecificvalues.
JAMNUTS
Whenusingajamnuttolockaregularnut,thejam nutshouldbeinstalledfirstandtightenedtoonehalf therecommendedtorque,thenheldinplacewhile installingaregularnuttotherecommendedtorque.
THREADLUBRICATION
Theadditionofantiseizecompound,Molykote,oil, graphite,oranyotherlubricanttoaboltdecreases thefrictionbetweenitandanut.Thismakesit necessarytoreducetherecommendedtorqueto preventovertensioningofthebolt.Whenusingthe torquechartsinthismanual,decreasethevalueby 20%wheneveralubricantisused.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
Thefollowingprecautionsaresuggestedtohelppreventaccidents. SEESPECIFICINSTRUCTIONSINTEXTFORDETAIL.
Acarefuloperatoristhebestoperator.Most accidentscanbeavoidedbyobservingcertain precautions.Readandtakethefollowing precautions,beforeoperatingthecommercial mower,topreventaccidents.Equipmentshouldbe operatedonlybythosewhoareresponsibleand instructedtodoso.
Thiscuttingmachineiscapableofamputatinghands andfeetandthrowingobjects.Failuretoobservethe followingsafetyinstructionscouldresultinserious injuryordeath.
COMMERCIALMOWER
1.Allpersonswhowilloperatetheunitshouldread theOperatorsManualcarefullybeforeusingthe equipment.Lackofoperatingknowledgecan leadtoaccidents.
2.Permitonlyproperlytrainedandqualifiedpersonstooperatetheunit.
3.Usethestepplateswhengettingonandoffthe unittopreventfalls.Keepstepsandplatform clearedofmudanddebris.
4.UseanapprovedRolloverProtectiveStructure (ROPS)andseatbeltforsafeoperation.OverturningaunitwithoutaROPSandseatbeltcan resultindeathorinjury.IfthestandardROPSor seatbelthasbeenremoved,seeyourNewHollandDealerforareplacement.
5.AlwaysusetheseatbeltwithROPS.IftheROPS hasbeenremoved,donotusetheseatbelt.
6.Donotpermitanyonebuttheoperatortorideon theunit.Thereisnosafeplaceforextrariders.
7.Replacemissing,illegible,ordamagedsafety decals.
8.Keepsafetydecalscleanofdirtandgrime.
ServicingtheCommercialMower
1.Thecooling system operatesunderpressure whichiscontrolledbytheradiatorcap.Itisdangeroustoremovethecapwhilethesystemishot. Alwaysturnthecapslowlytothefirststopandallowthepressuretoescapebeforeremovingthe capentirely.
2.Donotsmokewhilerefuelingtheunit.Keepany typeofopenflameaway.Waitfortheengineto coolbeforerefueling.
3.KeeptheCommercialMoweringoodoperating conditionforyoursafety.Animproperlymaintainedunitcanbehazardous.
4.Keepopenflameawayfrombatteryorcold weatherstartingaidstopreventfiresorexplosions.Usejumpercables,accordingtoinstructions,topreventsparkswhichcouldcauseexplosion.
5.Beforeservicing,parktheunitonafirm,levelsurfaceandapplytheparkingbrake.Removethe keytopreventaccidentalstart-up.
6.Escapinghydraulic/dieselfluidunderpressure canpenetratetheskin,causingseriousinjury.
• Donotuseyourhandtocheckforleaks.Usea pieceofcardboardorpapertosearchforleaks.
• Stoptheengineandrelievepressurebeforeconnectingordisconnectinglines.
• Tightenallconnectionsbeforestartingtheengineorpressurizinglines.
• Iffluidisinjectedintoskin,obtainmedicalattentionimmediatelyorgangrenemayresult.
7.Donotmodify,alter,orpermitanyoneelseto modifyoralterthisunitoranyofitscomponents, oranyunitfunctionwithoutfirstconsultingyour NewHollandDealer.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
8.Thefueloilintheinjectionsystem isunderhigh pressureandcanpenetratetheskin.Unqualified personsshouldnotremoveorattempttoadjust apump,injectornozzle,oranyotherpartofthe fuelinjectionsystem.Failuretofollowtheseinstructionscanresultinseriousinjury.
9.SomecomponentsonyourCommercialMower, suchasgaskets,maycontainasbestos.Breathingasbestosdustisdangeroustoyourhealth. Youarethereforeadvisedtohaveanymaintenanceorrepairoperationsonsuchcomponents carriedoutbyanauthorizedNewHollandDealer. If,however,serviceoperationsaretobeundertakenonpartsthatcontainasbestos,theessentialprecautionslistedbelowmustbeobserved:
• Workoutofdoorsorinawellventilatedarea.
• Dustfoundontheunitorproducedduringwork ontheunitshouldberemovedbyextraction,not byblowing.
• Dustwasteshouldbedampened,placedina sealedcontainerandmarkedtoensuresafedisposal.
• Ifanycutting,drilling,etc.,isattemptedonmaterialscontainingasbestos,theitemshouldbe dampenedandonlyhandtoolsorlowspeed powertoolsused.
10.Continuouslongtermcontactwithusedengine oilhascausedskincancerinanimaltests.Avoid prolongedskincontactwithusedengineoil. Washskinpromptlywithsoapandwater.
11.Donotworkunderaraisedattachmentunlessit issecurelysupportedbyasuitablehoistorfloor jackandmultiplejackstands.
12.TheROPSandseatbeltmustbeproperlymaintainedandmustnotbemodified,drilled,oralteredinanyway.IftheROPSisdamaged,ifmust bereplacedandshouldnotbestraightenedor welded.
DRIVINGTHECOMMERCIALMOWER
1.Watchwhereyouaregoing,especiallyatrow ends,onroads,aroundtreesandlowhanging obstacles.
2.Toavoidupsets,drivetheCommercialmower withcareandatspeedscompatiblewithsafety, especiallywhenoperatingoverroughground, whencrossingditchesorslopes,andwhenturningcorners.
3.Keeptheunitinthesamegearwhengoingdownhillasusedwhengoinguphill.Donotcoastor freewheeldownhills.
4.Whentheunitisstuckortiresarefrozentothe ground,goupforwardtopreventupset.
5.Alwayscheckoverheadclearance,especially whentransportingtheCommercialMower.
6.Avoidquickstops,especiallywhenanattachmentisraisedornotinstalled.Quickstopscan causeupsets.
7.DonotattachchainsorropestotheROPSfor pullingpurposes.
OPERATINGTHEPOWERTAKEOFF(PTO)
BeforeinstallingorusingPTO-drivenequipment, readthemanufacturer’smanualandreviewthe safetylabelsattachedtotheequipment.
1.WhenoperatingPTO-drivenequipment,shutoff theengineandwaituntilthePTOstopsbefore gettingofftheunitanddisconnectingtheequipment.
2.Donotwearlooseclothingwhenoperatingthe powertake-offorwhennearrotatingequipment.
3.WhenoperatingstationaryPTO-drivenequipment,alwaysplacethegearshiftleverinneutral, applytheparkingbrakeandblockinfrontwheels frontandback.
4.Toavoidinjury,donotclear,adjust,unclogorservicePTO-drivenequipmentwhenthetractorengineisrunning.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
OPERATINGTHEMOWERDECK
1.ReleasetheCommercialMowerHSTfootpedal, applytheparkingbrake,placePTOleverinthe “OFF”position,theliftcontrolleverinneutral positionandthetransmissioninneutralbefore startingtheengine.
2.Donotstarttheengineoroperatecontrolswhile standingbesidetheunit.Alwayssitintheseat whenstartingtheengineoroperatingcontrols.
3.Donotbypasstheneutralsafetystartswitch. ConsultyourNewHollandDealerifyourneutral safetystartcontrolsmalfunction.
4.Usejumpercablesonlyintherecommended manner.Improperusecanresultintheunitrunningaway.
5.Avoidaccidentalcontactwiththegearshiftlever whiletheengineisrunning.
6.DonotgetofftheCommercialMowerwhileitis inmotion.
7.DisengagethePTO,shutofftheengineandapplytheparkingbrakebeforegettingofftheunit.
8.DonotparktheCommercialMoweronasteepincline.
9.Donotoperatetheengineinanenclosedbuildingwithoutadequateventilation.Exhaustfumes cancausedeath.
10.Iftheengineoperateserratically,stoptheengine immediately.
11.Donotleaveequipmentintheraisedposition.
12.DonotoperatetheCommercialMoweroranyattachmentswhileundertheinfluenceofalcohol, medication,controlledsubstancesorwhentired.
13.Donotoperatenearditches,holes,embankmentsoranyotherterrainwhichmaycollapse undermachineweight.Theriskofmachinetipoverincreaseswhenthegroundislooseorwet.
14.Whenworkingincooperationwithotheroperators,alwaysletothersknowwhatyouaredoing aheadoftime.
15.Nevertrytomountordismountfromamoving unit.
16.DonotoperatetheCommercialMowerwithbare feet.Keephands,feetandclothingawayfrom power-drivenparts.
17.Donotdrivethemachineonstreetsorhighways. Watchfortrafficwhenyoucrossroadsoroperate nearroads.
18.Looktotherearbeforeandwhenbacking.You mustdisengagebladesbeforeshiftingintoreverse.Makesurethattheareaimmediatelybehindyouisclearofobstructionsorholesand smallchildren.Useextracautionwhenthemachineisequippedwithagrasscatcher.
19.DonotcrossgravelroadswiththePTOengaged.
20.Donotoperatethemowerdeckwithoutlocking thehoodandseat.
21.Disengagepowertothemowerdeckwhentransportingorwhennotinuse.
22.Disengagepowertothemowerdeckbefore backingup.Donotmowinreverseunlessabsolutelynecessaryandthenonlyaftercarefulobservationoftheentireareabehindthemower deck.
23.Whenmowingproceedasfollows:
a.Mowonlyindaylightoringoodartificial light.
b.Nevermakeacuttingheightadjustment whiletheengineisrunningiftheoperator mustdismounttodoso.
c.Checktheblademountingboltsforproper tightnessatfrequentintervals.
d.Shutofftheenginewhenremovingthe grasscatcherorclearingthechute.
24.Watchforholesintheterrainandotherhidden hazards.
25.Donotstoporstartsuddenlywhengoinguphill ordownhill.Mowupanddownthefaceofsteep slopes, nevercrosstheface.
26.Disengagepowertoattachment(s)andstopthe enginebeforeleavingtheoperatorsposition.
27.Neverleaveequipmentintheraisedposition.
28.Alwayskeepthedischargesideofthecutterdirectedawayfrompeopleandobjectswhichcould bestruckbydebristhrownfromthecutter.
29.InstallCommercialMowerweightstoincrease stabilitywhenoperatingonslopes.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
30.Avoidquickstopsespeciallywhenthemower deckisraised.Quickstopswillcauseupset.
31.Keepallshieldsinplace.
32.Replacesafetyandwarningdecalswhenthey becomeillegible.
33.Thevehicleandattachmentsshouldbestopped andinspectedfordamageafterstrikingaforeign objectandthedamageshouldberepairedbeforerestartingandoperatingequipment.
34.Donotlubricateormakemechanicaladjustmentswhiletheunitisinmotionorwhentheengineisrunning.However,ifminorengineadjustmentsmustbemade,applytheparkingbrake securely,blockthewheelsanduseextremecaution.
35.Periodicallymaintainthemowerdeck.Tighten nuts,boltsandfittingsperiodicallyforsafeoperation.Checkthebladefortightness.
DIESELFUEL
1.Undernocircumstancesshouldgasoline,alcoholorblendedfuelsbeaddedtodieselfuel. Thesecombinationscancreateanincreasedfire orexplosivehazard.Suchblendsaremoreexplosivethanpuregasolineinaclosedcontainer suchasafueltank.Donotusetheseblends.
2.Neverremovethefuelcaporrefuelwiththeenginerunningorhot.
3.Donotsmokewhilerefuellingorwhenstanding nearfuel.
4.Maintaincontrolofthefuelfillerpipenozzlewhen fillingthetank.
5.Donotfillthefueltanktocapacity.Allowroomfor expansion.
6.Wipeupspilledfuelimmediately.
7.Alwaystightenthefueltankcapsecurely.
8.Iftheoriginalfueltankcapislost,replaceitwith anapprovedcap.Anon-approved, proprietary capmaynotbesafe.
9.Keepequipmentcleanandproperlymaintained.
10.Donotdriveequipmentnearopenfires.
11.Neverusefuelforcleaningpurposes
12.Arrangefuelpurchasessothatwintergradefuels arenotheldoverandusedintheSpring.
AVOIDHIGH-PRESSUREFLUIDS
Escapingfluidunderpressurecanpenetratetheskin causingseriousinjury.Relievepressurebefore disconnectinghydraulicorotherlines.Tightenall connectionsbeforeapplyingpressure.Keephands andbodyawayfrompinholesandnozzleswhich ejectfluidsunderhighpressure.Useapieceof cardboardtosearchforleaks.
IfANYfluidisinjectedintotheskinitmustbe surgicallyremovedwithinafewhoursbyadoctor familiarwiththistypeofinjuryorgangrenemay result.

ENGINE
DESCRIPTIONOFOPERATION
General
MCmodeltractorsareequippedwiththree-cylinder inlinedieselengines.Theseenginesareallfour cycle,overheadvalve,liquidcooledengines.These enginesaremechanicallyfuelinjectedbyaninjectionpumpandfuelinjectors.Eachcylinderhasaninjector,foratotalofthree.Duetotheplacementofthe fueltank,asmall,inlineelectricfuelpumpassistsfuel deliverytothefuelinjectionpump.Thecoolingsystemutilizesandenginemountedwaterpumpthatcirculatescoolantthroughtheengineandradiator.A thermostatisusedtodirectcoolantflow.Theengines intheMCmodeltractorsaresimilarandthereforeutilizesimilarrepairprocedures.
Eachmodel’sengineisidentifiedbyacode,1,which iscastintothelowerrightsideofthecylinderblock.
NOTE: Thenumericvalue,2,listedundertheengine codeindicatesthedisplacementoftheengine,in liters.

CylinderBlock
Thecylinderblockassemblyhousesthepistons, connectingrods,crankshaft,timinggears,camshaft, andtheengineoilpump.Thecrankshaftissupported byfourmainbearings.Thefirstbearingispositioned inaboreinthefrontoftheblock.Thesecond,third andfourthbearingsaresplitandareheldinplaceby holdersboltedtotheengineblock.Theconnecting rodsareboltedtothecrankshaftandspinonsplit bearingsbetweenthecrankshaftandconnecting rods.Theconnectingrodsareattachedtothepistons,whichmoveupanddowninsidetheblock.The camshaftutilizestwoballbearings,oneoneachend ofthecamshaft,whichrideontheinsideoftheblock.
CylinderheadandValveTrainComponents
Thecylinderheadcontainsthevalveassemblies,the rockerarmsandrockerarmshaft,pushrodsandlifters.Thefuelinjectorsandglowplugsarealso housedinthecylinderhead.Aswirlchamberlocated betweentheinjectorassembliesandthemaincombustionchambersofthecylindersprovidesimproved startingandbetterfuelefficiency.Initialfuelcombustionbeginsinthepre-combustionchamber,whichin turncreatesastrongswirlpatternintothemaincombustionchamber.Thisaidsincompletecombustion oftheair-fuelmixture.TheMC22valvecoveralso servesasapre-combustionchamber/airintakemanifold,whereasthevalvecoverontheMC28and35 isseparatefromthepre-combustionchamber/airintakemanifold.Theexhaustmanifoldisboltedtothe leftsideofthecylinderhead.
Thecylinderheadalsousesintegralvalve guidesandstandardsizevalvesonlyforeaseof replacement.

COMPRESSIONTEST
8.Disconnectthewiringharnesslead,1,fromthe fuelshutoffsolenoid,2.
NOTE: Besureallglowplugsareremovedfromthe enginebeforeproceedingwiththecompressiontest.
NOTE: TheMC28andMC35modelshown;theMC 22modelissimilar.
9.Removetheglowplugbusbar,1,fromtheglow plugs,2.Removetheglowplugsfromtheeach cylinder.
NOTE: Itmaybenecessarytoremovesomeinjector fuellinestobeabletoinstalltheadapter.
10.Installtheadapter,1,ofspecialtoolFNH00120 intothefirstcylinderandattachthegaugeand hosetotheadapter.

11.Crankthetractorengineandobservethepressuregauge.Cranktheengineuntilpressurestabilizes.Thegaugeshouldindicate29.4 ± 3.5bar (427±50psi).
12.Performsteps3and4foreachcylinder.The compressionshouldnotdiffermorethan3.5bar (50psi)betweeneachcylinder.Ifresultsofthe testindicateadifferencegraterthan3.5bar(50 psi),theheadgasketmaybeblownortheremay beinternalenginedamage.
13.Aftercompletingthetest,installtheglowplugs andbusbarbackintothetractorengine.

ENGINEOVERHAUL
IMPORTANT: Itisadvisabletolabelparts,hoses, electricalconnections,etc.,whenremovingtheenginefromthetractor.Thiswillensurethattheinstallationoftheenginegoessmoothly.
1.Disconnectthenegativebatterycablefromthe battery.
2.Lifttheenginecoverandremovethetwo(2) bolts,1,whichsecurethecover,2,tothetractor.
3.Draintheengineoilfromtheengine.
4.Placeasuitablepanundertheradiatorpetcock, 1,andopenthepetcocktodraintheenginecoolantfromtheradiatorandengine.

5.Removethebolts,1,thatsecurethemuffler,2,to thetractorengine.Removethemufflerfromthe engine.
6.Removetheairintakehose,1,andairfiltercanister,2,fromthetractorengine.

NOTE: Whenremovingtheradiatorhosesfromthe engine,residualenginecoolantmayleakfromthe tractorengine.

2.Lifttheinjectionpump,3,fromthemounting bolts,2,andremovethecotterpin,1,thatretains thegovernorlinktothepump.
3.Removetheinjectionpumpfromthepumpbody.
NOTE: Itmaybenecessarytouseapullertoremove thecrankshaftpulley.
4.Removetheretainingnutandwasher,1,that securesthecrankshaftpulley,2,tothe crankshaft,3.Removecrankshaftkey,4,from grooveincrankshaft.
5.Removethebolts,1,whichsecurethetiming cover,2,totheengineblock.Liftthecoverfrom thelocatingdowels.
