“ASML has so much to o er, there’s always something that ts your pro le,” says Swen Sekha. Swen and his colleague Ward Dijkman are two new graduates who recently joined ASML’s management traineeship in Veldhoven. Besides working on technological challenges, Swen and Ward experience rst-hand how the company also takes social responsibility and cares for its employees.
Ward obtained his master’s degree in High Tech Engineering, withaspecializationinMicro&NanoScience.Swengraduated inAppliedPhysics,withaspecializationinRenewableEnergy.Ward: “Iwantedtoworkinthehigh-techindustry,therewasnodoubtabout that.ButIdidn’twanttohavetochooseasingleareaofspecialization rightfromthestart.Iheardabouttraineeshipsasawayofgettingto knowcompaniesanddiscoveringwhatpossibilitiesareavailableforme. Withitsmanagementtraineeship,ASMLofferedaterrificopportunity in this context.”
You’ve both been at ASML for a few months now.
How have you found it so far?
Ward:“It’sabigcompany,whichcanfeelabitoverwhelmingatfirst. Butyousoonsettlein.Everyoneiswillingtohelpyou,andthere are lots of tools to support your success in your role. For example, thereisabuddysystem:someonewhoanswersallyouron-boarding questionsandwhoisalwaystheretolendanear.”
Swen:“Ithasstruckmehowthe‘threeCs’–whichstandfor‘Challenge’,
‘Collaborate’and‘Care’–areembeddedintoeveryone’sbehaviour withinASML.Youhavevariousmentorstohelpyououtatthetechnical level.Andintermsof‘Challenge’,justaswelearnedtododuringour studies,wechallengeeachothertoseeourworkthroughfresheyes.”
‘Challenge’ is indeed very important within ASML. So are you also made responsible for challenging yourself and taking new steps?
Ward:“Myfirsttraineeshipassignmentisrelatedtothesupplychain.
Mybuddytaskedmewithmakingsurethatthewarehousesdon’t stocktoomanyparts,andIamheldtoaccountonthat.Iwasgiven thenecessaryresponsibilityandtrustquitequickly,eventhough you’re supposed to have more experience and training for this task. SoIfeellikeafully-fledgedemployeeratherthanatrainee.”
Swen:“Proactivenessishighlyappreciated.Duringmyfirstassignment Istartedtolookforadditionalchallenges.NowIampartofmultiple projects,whichshowsjusthowmuchtheyrewardproactivenesshere. Peoplearecomfortablewithgivingyouresponsibility,andIlikegettingthat responsibility. We have to arrange our next assignments ourselves too.”
Social responsibility is important within ASML. How do you notice that in practice?
Swen:“Oneofmyprojectsrelatestoeliminatingplasticbagsfrom oneofourplants.We’reworkingonreusablepackagingtoincrease sustainabilityandreducecosts,whichisasizablechallengeforASML.”
Ward:“Therearevarioussocialimpactinitiatives.Forexample,every employeeisallowedtospendoneworkingdayperyearvolunteering.”
Swen:“Anddiversityandinclusionisanimportantthemewithinthe company.AtASML,peoplefrommanydifferentnationalitieswork together.Tomakesurewefeelathome,therearemanycommunities for different groups. Education efforts ensure that as many employees aspossiblecomeintocontactwiththesecommunitiesandlearn whattheystandfor,sotheycanjointhemwhentheyfeellikeit.
”Ward:“Eveninmyownteamof14people,wehavesevendifferent nationalities.Onenicethingaboutdiversityisthatsomepeoplewant to be free at Christmas and others prefer to take time off for Ramadan orChineseNewYear.That’susefulindepartmentsthathavetobe staffed all the time.”
Have you already discovered first-hand that you can make a real impact with your projects?
Swen:“Yes,thankstobeinggivenresponsibility,youcanalsomakean impact.AtASML,itisnotsounusualtobeabletomakeamarkwithin such a short space of time. Colleagues in the factory have told me they’re happythatwe’reworkingtoreducethenumberofplasticbagsweuse. Moreover,thenewsolutionismorepleasantforthoseemployeesto workwith.It’sverynicetohearfeedbacklikethat.”
Ward:“Notallprojectsmakeiteasytoseeyourpersonalimpact,but formycurrentproject,Iseemyweeklyimprovementsreflectedinthe data.Itfeelsverygoodtoseethatwereallyarereducingstocklevels.”
Do you have to be a certain type of person to fit in at ASML?
Ward:“Definitelynot.Therearesomanydifferentrolesthatsuitso many different types of people. Proactiveness is important during a traineeshipliketheonewe’redoing,butthatactuallyappliestoall ofASML.It’shighlyvaluedhere.”
Swen:“ASMLisverydynamicandcreative.I’vealreadyseensomany ideasemergeinthefactoryI’mbasedatoverthepastfewmonths. It’s constantly changing, and things move very fast.”

I particularly like the fact that they take students very seriously. They asked formyfeedbackontheworkshoptheyhadpreparedandIwasquite critical in my response. They incorporated all of my suggested changes anditbecamethebestworkshopofthatconference.Thatreallymade an impression on me.”
“IsubsequentlydidmygraduationprojectatCanon,andIwasoffered ajobimmediatelyafterwards,on1June2023.IthinkCanoncould benefitbyrecruitingevenmoreyoungerpeople,butthefactthatit listens to employees so closely is a very positive step. Moreover, the companyhassignificantlyincreaseditscollaborationwithstudents in recent years.”
“BeforeIjoined,CanonProductionPrintingwasstillmakingrelatively little use of data in certain production processes. By demonstrating howimportantdataisforprocessimprovements,Iwasgiventhechance tostarttacklingthis.Howmanyothercompaniesallowyoutodefine yourownjob?ThefactthatIreceivedsuchapositivereactionwasthe decidingfactorforme.I’mnotgoingtofindthatelsewhere.”
“If you have ideas and can explain them clearly, Canon’s management isveryopentohearingthem.Intheirview,youshouldtakethe initiativeandcomeupwithyourownprojects.Thingsaren’thandedto you on a plate, but you’re encouraged to speak up about improvements you think could be made.”
“The atmosphere at Canon Production Printing is very informal, and personally I like that a lot. There is a hierarchy here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t speak to certain people. The company is making an efforttorejuvenateitsworkforce.Alotofpeoplehavebeenworking hereformanyyears–butIcanunderstandwhy,becausetheprospects forcareergrowtharereallygoodhere.”
“During my studies I did an internship at an insurance company, and duringthepandemicIspentsixmonthsworkingasademandplanner inthesoftdrinksindustry.SoIknowthatdataanalystsatothercompanies spend most of their time behind a computer screen. In contrast, here atCanon,Ialsoregularlyventureoutontotheproductionfloor,such as to test my analysis out in reality. My friends from university are often much further removed from production in their jobs.”

“IwoulddefinitelyrecommendCanonProductionPrintingtocurrent students. As I said, they take students very seriously here. And Canon isalwayshappytocreatestudyassignments;therearesomany departments,theycanalwaysfindaplaceforyou.Asastudent,you’re assignedtwosupervisorshere.That’sverybeneficial,becausethey complementeachother.Iactuallysupervisestudentsmyselfnow. Andpeoplewhocomeonboardasstudentsoftenstaywiththe company after they graduate. I think that speaks for itself.”

“During my master’s, one of my lecturers told me about the possibilities offered by an EngD. The idea really appealed to me, because after doingamaster’syouhavealotoftheoreticalknowledge,butyoustill lackpracticalexperienceandknowledgeofhowtoputthetheoryinto practice.Besidesthat,Ireallywantedtodosomethingwithasocial impact. I’m not so interested in making marginal improvements at a large manufacturer. I’m much more concerned about climate change, andIwouldliketocontributetotacklingit.ButbackthenIdidn’tknow howIcouldutilizemyknowledgetodoso.”

Inhisfirstyear,Maasworkedonanumberofsmallerprojectsatvarious organizations.Nowinhissecondyear,heisstartingonabigproject atresearchinstituteDiffer,whichconductsfundamentalresearchinto materials, processes and systems for sustainable energy.
“AtDiffer,Iwillbeinvolvedinthediscoveryofnewmaterialstooptimize theefficiencyofhydrogenproduction.Thisisanimportantpartof the energy transition in terms of the storage and usage of energy. Ultimately,wearecontributingtothesetupofalabthatcanautonomouslysynthesizenewmaterials,conductexperimentsonthemand usetheresultstodecidewhichmaterialitwillsynthesizenext.Rightnow, we’recreatingthefirstbuildingblocksforthat.Myprojectentails workingonasimulationenvironmentforthatfuturelab.”
“For me, the EngD program is the ideal next step after my master’s degree. I’m learning a lot, gaining practical experience, discovering wheremytalentslieandwhichprojectrolessuitmebest,andI’m workingatvariousorganizationsandgettingexposuretodifferent company cultures. After my EngD – assuming that everyone is still happy, and budget permitting – I could imagine myself staying on here at Differ. Itwouldbeagoodplacetopursuemycareer,becausetheoverall project is expected to run for seven to ten years.”

‘We’re pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology’
Walking across ice elds in temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius with wind speeds of 160 km per hour. These are just two of the challenges of performing research in Antarctica. Team Polar, a team of 42 students from the Eindhoven University of Technology, is developing an autonomous rover to make Antarctic operations more sustainable, safe, a ordable and e cient. TNO is helping the team realise their second rover, called Gentoo, which is set out to be deployed in Antarctica in 2026.
From TU/e to TNO
AndresDiazAguilarfinishedhisbachelor’s mechanicalengineeringatTU/e.Hewaspart of Team Polar in 2024 and is currently interning at TNO in Helmond.
‘Iwaslookingforanextrachallengeandwhat appealedtomewasTeamPolar’ssustainable mission. Climate change is threatening our future,andtofacethiscrisisheadon,weneed to understand its underlying mechanisms. This can only be achieved through research in pristine environments like Antarctica. Team Polar’ssolar-poweredandfullyautonomous rover is designed for this very challenge, helpingresearcheffortswhileoperating withoutemissionsandleaveitsenvironment unaffected.
Forme,TeamPolarwasanopportunitytogo beyond the tech and delve into the business side of technological innovation. Managing
theteam,buildingpartnershipswithindustry… thesewereamongstthetypesofexperiences IgainedatTeamPolar.Throughthiswork, IlearnedaboutTNO’sworkonbatteryresearch, pavingthewayformyinternshipatTNO. Forthelastsixmonths,Ihavebeenworkingin
theTNOpowertrainsdepartmentinHelmond, workingonbatterymodeling.I’mcurrently conducting research on physics-based electrochemical models for fast charging, whichiscrucialforreducingbatteryageing. I didn’t expect to be able to make such a significantimpactatTNOinthisshortamount oftime!IamveryhappytosaythatIhadthe opportunitytopublishtwopapersduringmy internship, including one as a primary author. Iwillgettopresentthisinanupcomingconference.Thiscouldnothavebeenpossiblewithout my supervisors. They not only offered great guidance, but also gave me a lot of trust and responsibilityandthechancetoworkhandin-handwithleadingexpertsinthefield. SeeingtheworkthatthepeopleatTNOare doing–makingtheworldbetterthrough technological development and research –mademerealisethatthisiswhatIwantto doaswell.’

At TNO, the students have access to various labs and facilities,likeclimatechambersinwhich temperaturescanbedroppeddowntowell belowzero.Helpfulwhenyouwanttoknow whichcellsperformbestatextremelylow temperatures. TNO experts have also providedmodelsandknowledgein autonomous routing and solar load modelling to ensure the rover crosses the terrain on target, and as effectively as possible. Team Polar has a very ambitious goal and TNOispressingfastforwardontheirdesign. Ourknowledgeandexperiencesavesthem hours of experiments and increases their chances of success. The students do this voluntarily and are so enthusiastic and passionate,itiswonderfultohelpagrouplikethis.

Team Polar’s Rover has to be an all-rounder. “Duringmymaster’s,whichIcompletedinFebruary2024,Irealized thatlabworkwasn’treallymything.Iwantedtobepartofateamand workonthemoretechnicalsideofthings.Afriendfrommyhometown ofHulstwasworkinghereandpointedoutavacancyforenvironmental engineer.Iappliedforthatposition,butwasunsuccessful.Thenaweek laterIwasofferedanotherrole,asprocessengineer.”
What appeals to you about Zeeland Re nery?
“A lot. Even though I didn’t have precisely the right educational backgroundtobeaprocessengineer,theywerestillpreparedtohireme forthisposition.Thatdemonstratestrust.Additionally,Ilikehowopen and friendly everyone is; I even noticed it during the application process.It’snotexactlyclosetoBreda,whereIlive,butthegood atmosphere more than compensates for that.”
How were your rst few months?
“Iwasimmediatelythrowninatthedeepend.Theheatexchangers were‘fouling’veryquickly,whichmeantthatwehadtotakecareof alotofthingsandthinkupnewwaystotacklethebuildup.That’s whatIfocusedon.Beforelong,Ialsohadtoholdpresentationsfor managementteam.Mynextprojectwillinvolvemoreengineering,
and I’ll have to learn a lot for that. My colleagues are already helping metoprepare.Thankstothatkindofsupport,I’mgrowinginmyrole.”
What do you love most about your work?
“Theinteraction.Asaprocessengineer,youengagewithPlanning, withMaintenanceandwithOperations.Youcomeintocontactwith lotsofdifferentdepartmentsanddifferenttypesofwork.Besidesthat, thecolleaguesinyourowndepartmentarehappytohelpyouwithall kindsofthings.Additionally,werotatebetweenthedifferentprocesses, whichenablesustolearnfromeachother.PlusProcessEngineering is a fairly young team here, and that’s pretty nice at the beginning of your career.”
How would you describe the atmosphere?
“Relaxed and approachable. We have around 500 employees here and Ilikethefactthatmyworkbringsmeintocontactwithalotofthem.
There atmosphere is friendly, but perhaps that’s easier at a smaller company like ours. Many of the process engineers are young, but there arealsoplentyofpeoplewhohavebeenherefor30years,inallkinds of roles. That speaks volumes about the atmosphere too.”
Sustainability and exibility are two important pillars for Zeeland Re nery. How do you see them re ected in your work?
“Foronething,wehaveastrongfocusonenergyrecycling.Weareone ofthemostenergy-efficientrefineriesinEurope.Therearelotsof possibilitiesforenergyrecoverynowadays.We’realsostudyingbiofuels andgreencarbon.Wemonitorourenergy-efficiencyperformanceevery daysothatwecanmakechangeswhenourconsumptionistoohigh. Myworkrevolvesaroundoptimizingtheprocess,andminimizing pollution is currently a hot topic in that context.”
“Thecompanyexpectsitsemployeestobeflexible.We’rearoundthe-clockoperation,andsometimesthat’snotperfectlyalignedwith yourworkingday–youmighthavetostartabitearlierorstaylate. Butinreturn,thecompanyisalsoflexibletoyourneeds.”
Zeeland Re nery is also known for being innovative and a close-knit family. Is this true, in your experience?
“Yes it’s very innovative, particularly in the area of sustainability. AnotherthingIlikeisthatthecompanyisveryopentohearingnew ideas, including from young employees. And it’s also a close-knit family.DuringtheapplicationprocessIheardthateveryoneknows eachother,andnowI’vebeenworkinghereforawhileI’vediscovered that it’s really true. The company also funds various fun initiatives and team outings such as sports, skiing trips, festive parties or a day at the Winter Efteling.”

What opportunities are available at Zeeland Re nery?
“Thereareplenty!I’mcurrentlyworkingasaprocessengineer, but you could also go into Planning, Maintenance, Safety, Energy.... Therearemultiplerolesinwhichyougettoseealotofthecompany. Butbecausesomanyrolesinvolvecontactwithotherdepartments, good social skills come in handy.”
