2. Keep to the marked navigation arch when negotiating bridges. Use the arch on your right when more than one arch is navigable.

3. Keep a good distance off all navigation markers. Keep clear of weirs.

4. It is an offence to exceed 5 Km/h within 200m of a bridge or jetty, within 100m of a lock, in a canal or harbour or when passing within 100m of a moored vessel.

Reduce speed when passing swimmers, anglers and small boats.

5. Ensure that you have adequate headroom when passing under bridges. If in doubt at Roosky and Tarmonbarry, request that the bridges be raised.

Portumna Bridge must be opened and the Lough Allen Canal footbridge must be raised.

6. When crossing the major lakes, establish your position by checking the numbers on the large buoys in Lough Ree and the letters on the similar buoys in Lough Derg with those on the accompanying charts.

7. When proceeding from one navigation marker to another, keep an eye on the one behind as the wind may cause you to drift inside the line.

8. Ensure that mooring ropes do not trail in the water as they may foul the propeller.

9. Unless it is open, undecked and carrying an engine not exceeding 15 h.p., your vessel must be registered.

10. If your vessel has a draft in excess of l.7m you may not navigate without permission.

11. It is an offence to navigate a vessel when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

12. Always keep a good look-out and navigate with care and caution and with reasonable consideration for others.

13. When meeting an approaching vessel, keep to the right of the channel so that you pass each other on the left side.

14. If you meet a vessel crossing from your right and there is danger of collision, you must give way.

15. When going upstream at a bridge, give way to vessels coming downstream.

16. When overtaking, leave the other vessel on your right hand side. You must keep out of its way when doing so and it must leave you sufficient room to overtake.

17. You must give way to vessels under sail.

18. Approach locks slowly and keep out of the way of vessels exiting. When in a lock do not refuel and do not light a cooker or any appliance with a naked flame. When there is more than one vessel in the lock, switch off your engine.

When leaving the lock, do so at a slow speed.

19. You may not berth at a particular quay or harbour for more than 5 consecutive days nor more than a total of 7 days in anyone month.

20. It is an offence to moor at any navigation mark.

21. When navigating at night, your vessel must be equipped with lights as specified in the Bye-laws.

Remember Make sure if you hand over the cruiser, even for a minute, to someone else they also understand the rules and system of markers.

Smart cards are used to operate the locks, access the service block, to use the pump-outs and for accessing electricity on the moorings where it is available along the waterways. Further information is available at www.waterwaysireland.org Card readers are attached at each service block to enable users to check the number of units remaining on the smart cards. Cards are available in either 10 units or 20 units and a full list of stockists can be found on the Waterways Ireland website by searching for "Smart Card Outlets" in the search function. Smart cards and Waterways publications can also be ordered online from www.shopwaterwaysireland.org

Man Overboard Prevention is better than cure. * Keep decks tidy, clean and free from trailing ropes. * Watch out for slippery or wet decks. Wear proper shoes. * Check that guardrails are an adequate height and secure. * Children should always be supervised while on deck. * Never work on deck while underway. * Always hold onto the boat while walking around on deck.

Recovering a person from the water. * This can be difficult so it helps to have thought it through before it happens. * Once alongside the person in the water they can use the bathing platform or boarding ladder to get aboard. * If the person is unable to help themselves you may need to get them aboard by using the dinghy, or by improvising some form of lifting gear. * Once aboard they should be made warm and dry. Medical assistance may be needed, particularly if the person has been in the water for any length of time.

If you cannot get back to the person on the first attempt, get help immediately.

What to do if it’s you who falls overboard.

If you fall overboard, make sure your lifejacket is on tightly and look for any lifebuoys or other floating objects, which may be close by. Remain calm, keep your legs close together and restrict your movements to stop flushing cold water under your clothing.

We cannot emphasise enough the importance of wearing a lifejacket on deck in poor conditions.

If someone falls overboard: Don’t panic - follow these steps WIND

Before you go Cruising Before starting off it is best if you are quite sure that you are happy with the instruction that you have been given. Although really skilful boat handling normally only comes with lots of practice, it is normal for most people to be able to understand and control a cruiser within a relatively short time. Most problems occur with excessive speed, lack of common sense and/or with bad or no planning. Before getting under way, give your crew members specific jobs to do. There is more to cruising than just steering the boat. There must be a set drill, when entering a lock for instance, with persons deputed to handle the bow and stern ropes and to watch the dinghy. Someone should check the mooring lines for knots etc. Someone should keep the decks clean and free from mud and wet.

Lifejackets should be available for everyone on board and it important that you have one that fits you properly. Our advice is that they should be worn anywhere there is a possibility of falling in the water. Going through locks, crossing lakes and entering harbours are times when it is essential to wear a life jacket. Children should wear lifejackets at all times - even when the cruiser is docked and they are near the shore.

Lifejackets must be worn by law by: l Anyone on board an open craft that is under 7 metres in length. l Anyone on deck on a craft that is under 7 metres length. l Anyone under the age of 16 on board an open craft or on deck of any other type of craft.

Check the engine panel at regular intervals. The most important gauge is the engine temperature gauge. If this rises at any time beyond the normal level it is usually a symptom of a blocked water inlet or blocked filter.

If you only learn one knot on your holiday - this is the one!

Keep the Navigation Guides handy and make sure that you know where you are at all times. Do not cruise in waters where you see a lot of weed as this may get sucked into your cooling water intake and cause overheating of the engine. For the same reason, do not moor the cruiser to the riverbank.

Whilst it is acceptable to use the anchor for temporary stops during the day do not trust the anchor for night mooring. The 'bed' of the River is mainly rock and it can be difficult for the anchor to get a firm hold. The depth of the water varies so much that it will not be possible to anchor everywhere.

Keep an eye on your mooring ropes. Make sure that they are safely stowed at all times. A trailing rope can easily get wrapped around the propeller and this will cause the engine to stop and may cause damage. Always pay attention to the dinghy in locks and when leaving a mooring that it is not trapped under a jetty.

If you make a bad approach or the wind has blown you off course do not be afraid to back off and try again. It is safer to do this than expect your crewmembers with the ropes to undertake an Olympic jump ashore! In fact, never jump from a boat at any time, especially a moving boat, and never onto a floating wooden jetty.

Useful hints for Captains Make sure that your engine has run for a few minutes to warm up and that water is flowing from the exhaust before casting off lines.

Remember that a boat does not steer like a car; it pivots from the rear; a lot of damage is caused when the rear of the boat connects with a jetty or other boat during a turning manoeuvre.

You should consider the traffic in the area and the direction of wind and current when leaving and entering a mooring. Be aware of current and wind direction, and whenever possible, dock facing into the current or wind.

Always prepare for docking and entering locks well in advance, having two of your crew waiting with bow and stern ropes at the ready. Reduce your speed and line up your approach. Slow the boat speed down to idle but always keep it in gear until a few boat lengths from the jetty or wall, engaging reverse gear with a quick burst of throttle to stop.

Always, always keep the charts in front of you when underway; it's amazing how many boats go off navigation just because of lack of concentration and not paying attention to the charts.

Be aware of your safety at all times by wearing lifejackets on deck. Never fend off the boat with arms or legs. Be careful with ropes and avoid getting your hand between the rope and the mooring cleat.

Do not assume that everyone onboard can read your mind. Be specific and give positive directions if you ask for their help.

Be aware of the weather conditions when crossing lakes and make sure the visibility is good enough to see the markers.

NAVIGATING FROM KILLALOE TO LIMERICK Before navigating on these waters advance notice should be given to the Lock keeper at Ardnacrusha, who controls Parteen lifting bridge and Ardnacrusha lock.

Two main factors can impact on the navigation from Ardnacrusha lock to Sarsfield lock.

1. Water velocity Water velocity is influenced by the following factors: rainfall, amount of turbines on and tides.

Check with the Lock keeper at Ardnacrusha for advice on the number of turbines in operation. For advice on the tides check with the Lockkeeper at Sarsfield lock (see phone number below) 2. Airdraft Relevant airdraft gauges are placed upstream and downstream of all bridges (see positions on chart). Check airdraft on all bridges before passage through bridges.

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters and owners that they should NOT undertake a passage on the Limerick to Ardnacrusha stretch of the Shannon Navigation if the output from the Ardnacrusha hydroelectric power station is above 20 Megawatts due to high flow rates and water turbulence in the navigation.

Note that 20 Megawatts is equivalent to the output from one turbine at Ardnacrusha.

As part of the Blueways Ireland network of multi-activity trails for paddling, walking and cycling, there are defined paddling trails along the Shannon and Shannon-Erne.

These trails extend from either Lough Key or Lough Allen to Carrick-onShannon, and onwards along the Shannon to Lanesborough.

22 LOCK CONTROL PANEL (Shannon - Erne Waterways) There are no lock keepers on the waterway but there are a number of Patrollers with responsibility for controlling the waterway. They may be contacted in cases of difficulty by telephone on the number shown in this guide at each lock.

Lock operation cards and tokens may be purchased from outlets displaying the waterway logo.

Observe the correct procedure when passing your boat through a lock. The inexperienced should use the operation system extremely cautiously; nothing should be done unless the consequences are understood.

24 Automatische Schleusen - Shannon-Erne Waterway Es gibt auf dem Shannon-Erne-Kanal keine Schleusenwärter, sondern mehrere Beamte, die für den Wasserverkehr zuständig sind. Diese können Sie bei Problemen telefonisch unter der Nummer erreichen, die in diesem Gewässerführer bei jeder Schleuse steht.

Schleusenkarten sind in Geschäften, wo das Logo des Shannon-Erne-Kanals zu sehen ist, erhältlich.

Beachten Sie das Verfahren beim Durchfahren der Schleusen mit großer Aufmerksamkeit. Unerfahrene Skipper sollten das Betriebssystem sehr vorsichtig benutzen und die Bedienung nur durchführen, wenn Ihnen die ganze Prozedur klar ist.

A feature of Enniskillen is the number of small bars and hostelries which appear on the Main Street, providing welcome relief from the shops!

The town centre is firmly built along the long, narrow Main St, which actually changes name six times along its length! This gives the town a real sense of bustle and life as well as imbuing the shops with their own unique character.

There is no new, anonymous, development to be found on the Main Street and the established High Street Stores sit comfortably beside small independent traders, creating a special atmosphere for the place. For grocery shopping and general topup of victuals, moor at the Erneside Shopping Centre (beside marker 43A2 on map) and it is a very short walk to a good choice of shops. For craft and local produce, visit the Butterworth Centre (shown as Craft Shops on map).

Enniskillen is the County Town of Fermanagh, located almost exactly in the Centre of the County on the natural island which separates the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne.

The town is home to a population of approximately 14,000, by far the largest settlement in the County. As one would expect, the town is a retail centre for the County, and beyond, but it has yet to succumb to the blandness which infects many modern towns.

Navigationsregeln Die Navigation auf Shannon und Erne ist einfach, aber dennoch gibt es Regeln die Sie unbedingt beachten müssen wenn Sie nicht auflaufen wollen oder in schwierige oder gefährliche Situationen kommen wollen. Dazu muß man verstehen, dass Shannon und Erne natürliche Flüsse sind, die nicht wie ein Kanal tief bis an beide Seiten ausgebaggert sind. Genauer gesagt sind die Flussufer und die Ufer der Inseln normalerweise ein ganzes Stück weit sehr flach und oft auch sehr felsig.

Stellen Sie sicher dass Sie die Karte immer vor sich haben und jederzeit Ihre genaue Position kennen.

Seezeichen Alle irischen Binnengewässer verfügen über ein System von „Markern“, das anders ist als das international gültige System. Durch diese Seezeichen wird die sicher navigierbare Fahrrinne gekennzeichnet. Dies geschieht dadurch, dass ein Pfahl oder eine Schwimmboje am Rande des Flachwassers und auf Felsen, wo die Gefahr des Auflaufens besteht, gesetzt wird. Ihre Gewässerkarte zeigt beinahe alle dieser Seezeichen, Pfähle, Fass- oder schwimmenden Bojen und dadurch dass sich der Bootsführer an den markierten Flussverlauf hält, kann ein Auflaufen vermieden werden. In Schwierigkeiten können Sie eigentlich nur kommen, wenn Sie die markierte Fahrrinne verlassen.

Halten Sie genügend Abstand zu allen Seezeichen, da diese oft auf einem Felsen oder an der Kante einer Untiefe sitzen.

Fahren Sie niemals dicht am Ufer entlang. Halten Sie sich immer in der Mitte des Flusses wenn Sie keine Bojen sehen und halten Sie einen Abstand von mindestens 100 Metern zu Inseln, falls es keinen Anleger gibt Halten Sie sich fern vom Flussufer, schneiden Sie nie die Kurven und kreuzen Sie nicht zu dicht an den Inseln.

Am Shannon wird ein System von runden, roten Markern und grüne, eckigen Markern benutzt.

Wenn Sie Richtung Norden (flussaufwärts) fahren oder in Häfen oder Seitenarme einfahren, muss der rote Marker zu Ihrer linken sein, der grüne zu Ihrer rechten.

Wenn Sie in Richtung Süden (flussabwärts) oder aus Seitenarmen herausfahren, muss der rote Marker auf Ihrer rechten Seite sein, der grüne links.

Auf dem Lough Ree gibt es eine Reihe von Schwimmbojen, die von 1 bis 9 durchnummeriert sind, auf dem Lough Derg gibt es Schwimmbojen die von A bis J gekennzeichnet sind.

Sie können so Ihre genaue Position auf der Seekarte abgleichen.

Am Erne wird ein System von Tafeln auf Pfählen benutzt. Diese Tafeln sind halbrund und zur Hälfte rot und zur anderen Hälfte weiss gestrichen. Boote müssen auf der weißen Seite vorbeifahren.

Brücken und Vorfahrtsrecht Benutzen Sie immer den rechten Brückenbogen, falls an einer Brücke mehrere Bogen markiert sind.

Seien Sie besonders vorsichtig wenn Sie unter eine Brücke fahren, stellen Sie sicher dass Sie genügend lichte Höhe für Ihr Boot haben manche Brücken haben einen Teil der für die Passage angehoben wird. Wenden Sie niemals innerhalb von 100 Metern oberhalb einer Brücke, denken Sie an die Strömung.

Achten Sie immer auf entgegenkommende Boote, besonders wenn Sie flussaufwärts fahren und gewähren Sie Vorfahrt an Brücken.

Wenn Sie flussabwärts fahren haben Sie Vorfahrt, allerdings nicht vor Segelbooten oder schweren Bargen, die nicht so leicht anhalten können.

Machen Sie im Zweifel lieber Platz.

Sehen Sie sich bei der Annäherung an Brücken Ihre Navigationskarte an und beachten Sie die Einzelheiten.

Die Vorfahrtsregel gilt auch bei engen Kanälen und an Brücken.

Fahren Sie rechts wenn Ihnen andere Boote begegnen und gewähren Sie Booten, die von rechts kommen, die Vorfahrt. Überholen Sie andere Boote immer links.

Schleusen Nähern Sie sich Schleusen möglichst langsam und verlassen Sie sie auch langsam und halten Sie sich beim Verlassen der Schleuse fern von anderen Booten. Machen Sie in der Schleuse den Motor aus.

Geschwindigkeit Fahren Sie langsam wenn Sie an anderen liegenden Boote oder Anglern vorbeifahren. Ebenso gilt langsame Fahrt wenn Sie sich Häfen, Brücken oder Schleusen nähern. Langsam bedeutet keine Bug- oder Heckwelle zu verursachen und eine Geschwindigkeit bei der Sie zu keinen Notfallmanövern gezwungen werden könnten. Stellen Sie grundsätzlich sicher dass durch Ihre Heckwelle anderen Benutzern der Gewässer kein Schaden enststeht und die Uferböschungen nicht beschädigt werden. Die Behörden überwachen die Geschwindigkeit von Booten. Bitte beachten Sie dass am Shannon-Erne-Kanal eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 5 km/h gilt.

Seen Der untere Erne, Lough Allen, Lough Ree und Lough Derg sind große Seen, die bei stürmischem Wetter schwer zu überqueren sind. Beachten Sie die Wettervorhersage bevor Sie einen der Seen überqueren. Versuchen Sie immer, die Seen bei ruhigem Wetter zu überqueren und lassen Sie sich genügend Zeit um vor dem Einbruch der Dunkelheit über den See zu sein. Es ist immer am besten, die Seen in Gesellschaft eines anderen Bootes zu überqueren, doch wenn Sie einem anderen Boot folgen überzeugen Sie sich bitte dennoch auf Ihrer Karte vom korrekten Kurs. Beachten Sie die Seezeichen die hinter Ihnen liegen genauso wie die noch vor Ihnen sind es passiert sehr leicht dass man durch den Wind vom richtigen Kurs abgetrieben wird. Die gerade Linie zwischen zwei Seezeichen garantiert keine sichere Passage.

Anlegen Es ist grundsätzlich einfacher, gegen die Strömung anzulegen.

Denken Sie an andere wenn Sie festmachen und stellen Sie sicher dass Sie nicht mehr Platz als nötig belegen. In vollen Häfen sollten Sie darauf gefasst sein, daß Sie längs an einem anderen Boot festmachen oder anderen dabei zu helfen bei Ihnen längsseits zu gehen. Fahren Sie sehr langsam wenn Sie an einem anderen Boot längsseits gehen und stellen Sie sicher daß die andere Besatzung weiß was Sie vorhaben. Es ist am besten wenn Sie an Booten festmachen die größer als Ihr eigenes sind und stellen Sie sicher daß Sie genügend Fender haben sodaß keine Schäden beim Längsgehen entstehen. Machen Sie Ihr Seil immer an der Hafenmauer fest, falls die Klampen auf dem Boot an dem Sie festmachen nicht stark genug sind.

Machen Sie möglichst nicht an der Aussenmauer eines Hafens fest und auf keinen Fall wenn Wind vorhergesagt ist - beachten Sie die Detailansichten auf Ihrer Seekarte. Machen Sie niemals an einem Seezeichen fest.

Denken Sie daran Stellen Sie wenn Sie einmal das Ruder, auch nur für eine Minute, aus der Hand geben sicher, daß derjenige der übernimmt alle Regeln weiß und auch Ihre genaue Position auf der Navigationskarte kennt. © Shannon Leisure Development Company Ltd 2018

Bevor Sie in See stechen Bevor Sie ablegen sollten Sie noch einmal darüber nachdenken ob Sie bei der Einweisung alles verstanden haben und Ihnen alles erklärt worden ist. Obwohl der richtig gute Umgang mit einem Boot erst mit der Erfahrung erlernt wird, kommen die Meisten innerhalb kurzer Zeit mit dem Boot ganz gut klar.

Die meisten Probleme treten durch zu hohe Geschwindigkeit, Unverständnis und/oder schlechter oder fehlender Planung auf. Bevor Sie sich auf den Weg machen, sollten Sie jedem Mannschaftsmitglied eine bestimmte Aufgabe zuteilen. Zum Bootfahren gehört mehr als nur ein Boot zu steuern. Es muß zum Beispiel eine eingeübte Vorgehensweise bei der Einfahrt in eine Schleuse geben, bestimmte Mannschaftsmitglieder müssen für die Bug- und Heckleine und das Beiboot zuständig sein. Jemand sollte die Taue auf Knoten überprüfen und jemand sollte darauf achten daß das Deck sauber, frei von Matsch und Nässe und aufgeräumt ist.

Rettungswesten sollten für jeden an Bord vorhanden sein und es ist sehr wichtig daß jeder eine passende hat. Unser Rat ist, sie immer zu tragen wo die Möglichkeit besteht daß man ins Wasser fallen könnte. Während des Schleusens, beim Überqueren der Seen oder bei der Einfahrt in Häfen ist das Anlegen der Rettungsweste unabdingbar. Kinder müssen die Rettungsweste immer tragen, auch wenn das Boot angelegt ist oder sie nahe am Ufer sind.

Alle Insassen (Erwachsene und Kinder) eines Beibootes müssen Rettungswesten tragen, so lautet das Gesetz.

Sehen Sie regelmäßig auf die Armaturen des Bootes. Die wichtigste Anzeige ist die für die Motortemperatur. Wenn diese über den normalen Wert steigt, ist das in der Regel ein deutliches Zeichen für einen verstopften Kühlwasserstutzen oder filter.

Die Seekarten sollten immer in Ihrer Nähe sein und Sie sollten jederzeit wissen wo genau Sie sich gerade befinden. Kreuzen Sie nicht in Gewässern, wo sich eine große Menge Gräser befinden diese könnten in das Kühlsystem gesaugt werden und ein Überhitzen des Motors verursachen. Aus demselben Grund sollten Sie nicht an der Uferböschung anlegen.

Wenn Sie auch nur einen Knoten in Ihrem Urlaub lernen wollen das ist der eine !

Palstek

Obwohl es akzeptabel ist, den Anker für einen kurzen Aufenthalt während des Tages zu verwenden, sollten Sie ihm für eine Übernachtung nicht vertrauen. Das Flussbett ist hauptsächlich felsig und es ist schwer einen guten Halt für den Anker zu finden. Die Wassertiefe ist so unterschiedlich, daß Ankern nicht überall möglich ist.

Achten Sie immer auf Ihre Taue. Stellen Sie sicher daß die Taue jederzeit sicher verstaut sind. Ein Seil das im Wasser schleift kann leicht in die Schraube geraten und das wird dafür sorgen daß der Motor stoppt und kann Schaden verursachen. Denken Sie immer an Ihr Beiboot, vor allem in Schleusen, und achten Sie darauf daß es beim Ablegen nicht unter einem Steg verklemmt ist.

Wenn es beim Anlegen nicht auf's erste Mal klappt oder der Wind Sie abgetrieben hat, sollten Sie keine Scheu davor haben es einfach noch einmal zu versuchen. Das ist auf jeden Fall sicherer als von Ihren Mannschaftsmitgliedern einen Olympia-reifen Sprung an Land mit dem Seil in der Hand zu erwarten ! Tatsache ist, daß niemand jemals von einem sich bewegenden Boot springen sollte, und schon gar nicht auf einen schwimmenden Holzsteg.

Zusammennehmen & ziehen

Hilfreiche Hinweise für den Kapitän Stellen Sie vor dem Ablegen sicher daß der Motor Ihres Bootes einige Minuten warmgelaufen ist und daß Kühlwasser aus dem Auspuff austritt.

Denken Sie immer daran daß ein Boot sich nicht lenken lässt wie ein Auto das Heck schwingt aus und großer Schaden kann entstehen wenn das Bootsheck bei einem Drehmanöver in einen Steg oder ein anderes Boot kracht.

Bedenken Sie beim An- oder Ablegen immer anderen Bootsverkehr in der Gegend sowie die Windrichtung und die Strömung. Wenn möglich immer entgegen der Strömung und in den Wind anlegen.

Bereiten Sie sich rechtzeitig auf das Anlegen und das Einfahren in Schleusen vor. Zwei Mannschaftsmitglieder sollten an Bug und Heck mit den Tauen bereitstehen. Bremsen Sie ab und nähern Sie sich möglichst parallel. Bremsen Sie dann das Boot bis zum Leerlauf ab aber lassen Sie dabei den Gang drin bis Sie nur wenige Bootslängen vom Steg oder der Kaimauer entfernt sind. Geben Sie dann einen schnellen Gasstoss rückwärts um das Boot zu stoppen.

Ihre Navigationskarten sollten Sie immer, immer vor sich haben wenn Sie unterwegs sind; es ist erstaunlich wie viele Boote schlicht wegen mangelnder Konzentration oder Unaufmerksamkeit vom Kurs abkommen.

Denken Sie an Ihre eigene Sicherheit und legen Sie an Deck Ihre Schwimmweste an. Stossen Sie niemals das Boot mit den Armen oder Beinen ab. Seien Sie vorsichtig mit den Seilen und vermeiden Sie es unbedingt, Ihre Hand zwischen das Seil und die Festmachklampe zu bekommen.

Gehen Sie nicht davon aus daß Ihre Mannschaftsmitglieder Ihre Gedanken lesen können. Drücken Sie sich genau aus wenn Sie Ihre Crew bitten etwas zu erledigen.

Beachten Sie die Wettervorhersage. Bei starkem Wind und schlechter Sicht nicht hinausfahren. Fragen Sie Ortskundige.

Rettungswesten muessen fuer alle Personen mitgebracht werden. Tragen Sie sie wenn Sie sich auf dem Boot oder im Beiboot befinden.

Achten Sie auf oertliche Gefahren, wie starke Stroemungen, Wehrs und niedrige Bruecken.

Ueberladen Sie niemals das Boot oder Beiboot. Benutzen Sie die Sicherheitsleine am Aussenbordmotor.

Keinen Alkohol wenn Sie fahren.

Bei anbrechen der Daemmerung sollten Sie sicher fuer die Nacht angelegt sein.

Fahren im Dunkeln ist gefaehrlich.

Fahren Sie immer mit der Navigationskarte. Meiden Sie Untiefen, Felsen und fahren Sie immer durch die angegebenen Markierungen.

Achten Sie auf die Gefaerhlichkeit eines Feuer auf dem Boot, vor allem wenn Sie mit Benzin und Gas hantieren.

Versichern Sie sich das das Boot in Ordnung ist , das der Motor regelmaessig kontrolliert wird und das Sie genug Diesel haben.

Besondere Vorsicht ist geboten wenn Sie Schleusen benutzen.. Wenn Sie unsicher sind fragen Sie den Schleusenwart.

Tragen Sie sorge zur Umwelt und achten Sie auf andere Wasserbenutzer.

Werden Sie Mitglied in einem Verein oder Club und lassen Sie sich richtig ausbilden.

Mann über Bord Vorsicht ist besser als Nachsicht. * Das Deck aufgeräumt halten, sauber und frei von herumliegenden Seilen * Vorsicht bei rutschigem oder nassen Deck. Tragen Sie die richtigen Schuhe. * Überprüfen Sie die Höhe und Sicherheit der Reling. * Kinder sollten nicht unbeaufsichtigt an Deck sein. * Arbeiten Sie nicht an Deck während Sie unterwegs sind. * Immer mit einer Hand festhalten während Sie sich an Deck bewegen.

Rettung einer Person aus dem Wasser. * Dies kann eine schwierige Aktion sein. Deshalb macht es Sinn, sich vorab schon einmal Gedanken gemacht zu haben, bevor es passiert. * Wenn das Boot längsseits zu der Person im Wasser liegt, kann das Mannschaftsmitglied die Badeplattform oder die Badeleiter benutzen um wieder am Bord zu gelangen. * Falls die Person es alleine nicht schafft, müssen Sie zur Hilfe eventuell ins Beiboot steigen oder provisorisch eine Hebehilfe zur Verfügung stellen. * Nachdem die Person wieder an Bord ist, sollten Sie dafür sorgen, daß sie ins Warme kommt und sich abtrocknet. Ärztliche Hilfe kann erforderlich sein, insbesondere falls die Person länger im Wasser war.

Falls Sie es beim ersten Versuch nicht schaffen, zu der über Bord gegangenen Person zurückzukehren, holen Sie unverzüglich Hilfe.

Navigational Guide to the Shannon and Erne Waterways The navigation system runs from Belleek in the North to Limerick in the South, covering some 400km of navigable waterway. Taking in the lakes of Lower and Upper Lough Erne, the waterway passes into the Ballyconnell/Ballinamore Canal, reopened in 1994 as the Shannon-Erne Waterway to connect the Erne to the Shannon.

From here, the mighty Shannon can be navigated south to Limerick, taking in the large lakes of Lough Ree and Lough Derg. A small detour adds Lough Key and Lough Allen, as well as numerous small tributaries and bays.

This guide is intended for use by novices and experienced boaters alike, giving details of places to visit and services available at harbours and jetties. Navigation is simple and no depth information is given apart from “deep” and “shallow”. Navigation markers, buoys and barrels are shown, along with photographs of the most confusing parts to navigate.
