Dr Death & the Medi-Evil Medicine Show

Room in the Sky When Mr Rossi does this show with Mr Lynch it always goes wrong. Mr Rossi hasn’t learned his lines and doesn’t even speak English. As they struggle with each other to get somewhere they take us on a fantastic journey, passing by shrinking desert islands, some frantic Shakespeare and a storm at sea. They invite everyone on stage as the show spills out into the auditorium, collecting them up for a giant-size instant photograph. From the company that brought you The Fish’s Wishes.

By Simon Watt, presenter of the hugely successful Channel 4 series Inside Nature’s Giants

Sneezes, wheezes, sickness and diseases are never welcome. But in the past some of the so-called treatments could be worse than the underlying illness. Join the time-travelling Doctor Death to see if he can ‘cure’ you. A scientifically and historically accurate panto, complete with costumes, animations, puppetry, silly voices and audience participation.

It’s not always easy making friends, especially when you live in a lighthouse surrounded by dangerous rocks, towering waves and troublemaking seagulls. An exciting opportunity for a tea party with a friend arises when the supply boat comes, but the lighthouse keeper’s nervousness turns what could have been a delight into a disaster. It’s only when a storm blows in and real disaster looms that he can find the courage to save the day and rebuild his friendship. Horse + Bamboo Theatre make visual theatre in which music and story-telling is central, using masks, movement, puppetry and film.

Elmer was different. Elmer was patchwork. He was yellow and orange and red and pink and purple and blue and green and black and white. But he was not elephant-coloured. One night Elmer couldn’t sleep for thinking, and the think that he was thinking was that he was tired of being different. So off he set in search of the elephant-coloured berry bush. And this is where our story begins...

Based on the best-selling children’s book by author David McKee this brand new, fun-filled version of ‘Elmer’ bursts to life with jungle characters, catchy songs, and beautiful handcrafted puppets. From the company that brought you Giraffes Can’t Dance and The Dragon’s Daughter.

Leeds-based, multi-award-winning The Paper Birds return to The Carriageworks following their 2010 sell-out success. Paper and pens offer peepholes into strangers’ worlds, where secrets, self portraits and confessions are shared through a series of armchair interrogations. Based on a six-month exchange of letters and emails with prisoners, a celebrity and an Iranian artist, this new show uses live music, movement and verbatim text to represent three absent women and question if it’s possible to better understand them, or indeed ourselves.

Bane

Based on the true story of the artists Sir Terry Frost and Adrian Heath, who met in a POW camp during World War II and became great friends and a creative inspiration to one another. The show is set to a soundtrack of much-loved 1940s songs and was devised by Edward Elks and Dan Frost, grandson of the late Sir Terry Frost.

Someone’s gonna pay… A black comedy written and performed by Joe Bone with a live soundtrack from Ben Roe. Following the eponymous anti-hero as he goes about his business on the mean streets of pulp fiction, this sharp parody of film genres creates entire worlds from the simplest of staging.

200 years ago, far off the Welsh coast, one man faced an ordeal so diabolical that it would go down in maritime legend, changing the way lighthouses were run forever. Using original live music and little more than a ladder and a trapdoor, Keepers conjures up the confines of the infamous Smalls Lighthouse and the stormy companionship of its two keepers. Based on an extraordinary true story, an enchanting tale of sudden loss of life and drawn-out loss of sanity unfolds between the flashes of the lamp that the pair must tend each and every night. Keepers is a lyrical piece of stripped-down physical storytelling, layered with stunning visual imagery, intricate movement and ingenious use of sound.

This evening of anecdotes and witty conversation brings to life one of the most colourful figures of the eighteenth century: irritable, generous, depressive yet hilarious. Appearing as Dr Johnson is Ian Redford, praised for his performance as the same character in the hit comedy A Laughing Matter at the National Theatre. Director Max Stafford-Clark has directed acclaimed productions at the National Theatre, RSC and the Royal Court.

Optimism

My Darling Clemmie

The Gospel of Matthew

Another tempting and toothsome assortment of short sharp pieces from new theatre writers. Sweet and sour, soft and hard centres; plenty of chewy, thought provoking entertainment to sink your teeth into.

You want to be loved. People love lambs, so... become a lamb. Most people know when they’ve made a wrong decision. But what happens when someone is convinced theirs is the right one? Optimism is a twisted tale of desire and self-worth told through the eyes of an idiot. Blending dark clown with multimedia and unusual physicality, this production is both brutal and dreamlike, presenting a constant stream of unlikely characters, peculiar situations and striking visuals. Fuzzy Logic is a new company co-founded by Total Theatre Awardwinner Matt Rogers (Chotto Ookii Theatre Company) to create bizarre yet touchingly human stories with a darkly comic edge.

By Hugh Whitemore with grateful acknowledgments to Lady Soames

A virtuoso delivery of the greatest story ever told. Award-winning actor George Dillon presents an unforgettable vision of Jesus in his highly intense, very human and sometimes humorous performance of the first Gospel. Inspiring, startling and challenging, this Jesus is no meek and mild lamb to the slaughter, but a contemporary raging fighter for God.

Off she goes again, proving that there’s life in the old dog and, what’s more, she’s got some new tricks! Having dug up some fresh new comedy bones, Jenny Éclair is back, wagging her arthritic tail and resisting the urge to sniff lamp-posts. Yes, the old dog of the circuit is trotting once more around the block, proving yet again that she’s got what it takes to be an award-winner (Crufts 1982). Jenny Eclair has been a stand-up comic since the last millennium; she is a Grumpy Old Woman team captain, author and actress (Skins and The Bill). She is also fifty years old and trying not to mind.

Most people have a crush at 16, a relationship by 32, and sex in between. Not me and Susan Boyle (allegedly). What happens when you don’t follow the obvious path? A brand new show from international award-winning stand-up comedian and Guardian Weekend Magazine columnist. As seen on Beautiful People (BBC), Have I Got News For You (BBC), Last Comic Standing (NBC), My Brilliant Britain (Blighty) and heard on Muslim Driving School (BBC) and The Now Show (BBC).

Tim Key (chubby/stylish) will wear a suit and drink lager for an hour or so. This show – a combination of poetry, film and athletic clambering – won him the Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly the Perrier) in 2009. LIDOS presents

Barbershopera: Apocalypse No!

Jack and The Beanstalk

By Rob Castell and Tom Sadler in collaboration with and directed by Sarah Tipple

LIDOS return to The Carriageworks to present their annual family pantomime. Enjoy plenty of sing-along songs, booing and hissing, cheering and clapping in this exhilarating ride through Jack’s adventures. Dreamer Jack sells his cow Daisy for a handful of beans. Once planted, the beanstalk takes him way up into the clouds to the giant’s kingdom, where he finds the goose that lays the golden egg, rescues Jill and chops down the beanstalk to escape the giant.

Barbershop’s funniest quartet are back, in a double award-winning new show that follows international tours and a BBC Radio 4 broadcast. God summons four dastardly horsemen to unleash total destruction, but unfortunately Beth turns up instead of Death. Cue mistaken identity, four-part harmony and at least one hobby horse. Barbershopera played to rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and in London’s West End. They won Best Lyrics in the Musical Theatre Matters awards three years running.

It’s the dirty weekend from hell. Eddie and Crystal are two lonely people, hoping to find romance in a shabby seaside resort. He’s a stationery salesman who lives with his mum; she’s a croupier and Sean Connery fan. But when they get to their hotel, disaster follows disaster and it looks like love will never bloom. A funny and heart-warming tale of the eternal search for love, and the bizarre things that try to stop it. An amateur production in association with Josef Weinberger Ltd

When the well-to-do Alfredo offers her a respectable life in the country she grabs it, but soon discovers that the past has a nasty habit of catching up... From the celebration of life and its pleasures in the famous Brindisi to Violetta’s final, heartbreaking aria, Addio del passato, La Traviata explores the full range of human emotion, expressed through some of Verdi’s most popular and enduring music. Ladies’ Day

The Yeomen of the Guard

By Amanda Whittington

Work, love and life are just one long hard slog for the four likely lasses from the Hull fish factory. But their fortunes look set to change when they find tickets for Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot as it relocates to York. Out go the hairnets, wellies and overalls as they ditch work, tart themselves up and head off to the races for a drink, a flirt and a flutter. An exuberant and heart-warming comedy full of Yorkshire heart and soul. An amateur production in association with Nick Hern Books Ltd

Colonel Fairfax is imprisoned in the Tower and sentenced to die on Tower Green for sorcery. But as the execution bell tolls, it is revealed that he has miraculously escaped… This complicates things for innocent Elsie Maynard, who married him blindfold, so that his fortune would not go to his evil cousin. Elsie has never seen her bridegroom. What’s more, she is meant to be betrothed to the jester, Jack Point. Where is Fairfax now? Is she a wife or a widow? And can she resist the charms of handsome Leonard Meryll, who has recently joined the Tower warders?
