You might be wondering why I've dedicated a whole issue towards facial cleansing. In short, most people get this part of their skincare routine totally wrong.

Finding the perfect cleanser can be so overwhelming that many people settle for using bar soap, body wash, or even shampoo to cleanse their face. Some people don't bother to wash their face at all.

Wait, what?

Yep, you read that right. Can you even imagine? Ha! And those who know what to use don't always cleanse properly and adequately.

When my facial cleanser runs out, I can't just reach for any old bar of soap to wash my face.

I use a cleansing formula that suits my skin type and it's unique personality.

BEST FACE FORWARD: HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT CLEANSER FOR YOUR SKIN'S TYPE AND UNIQUE PERSONALITY So you're ready for a new facial cleanser, but you have no idea which one to buy? Don't fret! Here's a quick guide to help you choose the best cleanser for your skin and your goals.

First, ask yourself, "what am I looking for in a cleanser?"

Do you want a product that removes makeup?

Are you interested in oil control? Or do you simply want something that will leave your skin feeling fresh and clean?

Then consider your skin type.

Having a general understanding of your skin type can help you choose the best cleanser and make you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

Skin type is determined by the amount of oil (sebum) that's secreted over your skin's surface. Sebum secretes from our glands and is controlled by genetics and a network of hormonal activity.— If you're not sure of your skin type, don't worry. It's easy to figure that out.

Try this quick & easy test to figure out your skin type: Wash your face and let it air dry.

Then wait 25-30 minutes before looking closely at your skin in a mirror.

A sheen throughout your whole face (mainly your forehead) can mean oily skin. If it feels tight and uncomfortable, that's a big sign of dry skin. If you notice separate areas of dryness and oiliness, you probably have combination skin— most people fall into this category.

If you don't see any of these concerns, you are blessed with normal skin, which can be drier during the winter and sightly oily during the summer months.

Now let's look at the chemistry behind the perfect cleanser.

The exact science and specificity that create game-changing serums, masks, and face creams also formulate high-quality cleansers.

To name a few of the cleansing formulas, there are cleansing oils, oil-based cream cleansers, water-based creamy cleansers, gel-cleansers, water-based (i.e., micellar water), and foam cleansers.

Using the wrong kind of cleanser or over-cleansing can traumatize/sensitize any skin type.

For some people, their skin type changes from day to day depending on their hormones— so even if you think you have dry skin all the time, it's possible that your skin needs more hydration on certain days versus others. #moodyskin The truth is, most of us have a combination of different types of skin at any given time.

The typical skin type classifications— normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive can only tell you so much.

Your skin type is rarely as simple as what the primary categories represent. These categories also don't consider the degree of each skin type, for example, dry to very dry, oily to very oily, oily and dehydrated, or dry and dehydrated.

Hot Water And Steam Will Open Your Pores! the most common forms of clogged pores

Most people think using steam or hot water to wash their face helps because it opens the pores, but in reality, that's just a myth.

Let's set the record straight right here and right now so that you're not wasting valuable time, energy (or money) on a lost cause.

•

Boosts blood flow to nourish your skin and deliver oxygen.

•

The pores are very tiny openings in our skin.

But these openings don't have muscles and technically can not open and close.

Warms the skin to aid in product penetration.

Hot water (steam) can make the outer layers of skin swell, making pores look more "open."

The pores are not temperature sensitive and don't respond to the heat or cold.

And not least of all, softens the skin so that blackheads are more easily removed by the esthetician during treatment.

Ultimately, whatever your skin type, the best time to wash your face is when you'll actually do it. So try to incorporate your cleansing into the daily routines you already have to make it as simple as possible to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

Most people can get away with washing their face once a day, but others need to do so twice.

You should wash your face twice per day if you have oily skin. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you will probably be better off only washing your face once per day. And lastly, If you have combination skin, you likely fall into the once or twice a day camp depending on how oily your T-Zone is.

Everyone's skin has it’s unique personality and is affected by a combination of factors, including your genetics, hormones, environment, seasonal changes, and even your workout habits. The most important thing is to be diligent about taking care of your skin and finding the routine that works for you.

CT : While it might seem to go against everything you've ever heard or read in other beauty magazines, the truth is that harm can be done by washing your face too frequently.

Over-washing your face can strip away your skin's natural barrier (which holds in moisture). Or it can cause more oil production, which can contribute to acne flare-ups. You should identify your skin type and use that as a guideline for face-washing frequency.-- You'll need to pay close attention to make sure your skin does not become irritated, too oily, or dry from too much of a good thing.

CT : If you lead an active lifestyle, whether you walk for exercise, run, jump rope, bike, or hiking, be sure to wash off the sweat after your workouts.

Sweat serves the purpose of keeping your body cool during exertion. Due to the high sodium content, any sweat left on your face for extended periods can dry out your skin and irritate its upper layers. So never "ever-ever" let the sweat dry and sit on your skin!

CT : Those with normal, dry, or sensitive skin may only need to wash their face once a day in the evening. Adding in a quick once-over with a warm washcloth in the morning to refresh the skin before starting the day.

If you have oily or combination skin, it's best to wash your face in the morning and at night before bed. However, if you can only manage to cleanse once per day, it's more critical to wash at night to clear away all traces of your makeup, oil, SPF, dead skin cells, or environmental pollutants that have accumulated throughout the day.
