Welcome to the Summer Edition of the Abbey Manor Newsletter Welcome to the Summer edition of the Abbey Manor newsletter.

The Summer term is the busiest of the year with Year 11 sitting GCSEs and completing their vocational studies. I am really proud of the progress our students have made over the year, and despite the anxiety that surrounds exams they have persevered and look forward to receiving their results in August.

Sports Day involved students and staff across all key stages and was an enjoyable day. This is a great opportunity for Year 9 students transitioning over to the Broadoak Campus to get to know their KS4 peers.

The Celebration of Achievement moved to the Colfeian Grounds in Eltham. This venue was chosen as it allowed students to be creative and decorate the hall. The girls were particularly excited and all looked stunning in the evening.

I am extremely proud of all our Year 11 students and wish you all the best for the next Chapter in your lives.

Finally, it has been an interesting and exciting first year as the Headteacher of Abbey Manor College. I would like to thank staff, students, and parents for their support this year. We would not have been able to implement the many changes without you.

Professional Sports On 21st of June, MMA fighter and professional boxer, Michael ‘Venom’ Page visited Abbey Manor College. During his visit he talked to us about his career and told us he was preparing to join our Sport staff from September.

ally inspirational. After lunch with us he came and gave a question and answer session for the Sports group. We asked him about his fights and he told us about his unorthodox fighting style and why he chose fighting from a young age.

running MMA self-defence classes once a week for all students. This is exciting as he is a world-class athlete and fighter and can teach us a lot about how to defend ourselves. Overall, it was a really good experience having Michael in the school and we are all looking forwards to seeing him in September.

WHAT IMPACT DOES SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE ON Mental health is becoming more common amongst young people in the UK. This topic is very personal to me because I have friends that suffer from anxiety and depression.

Through my research, I found that this so common that everyone will experience it at some point in their life.

Social Media, especially platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat can play a big role in our self-confidence and consequently how we perceive ourselves.

For my Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), I have painted a self-portrait that will be a stepping-stone for a discussion around this issue.

Social media is a powerful tool that provides young people with a platform where they can share their voice and be heard.

The new media offers access to unlimited information, as well as an easy way to connect with people from all over the world.

We can contact friends and make new ones.

What happens if you don’t have any friends or find it hard to make new ones? How would that make you feel? Social media could be the worst thing to do for someone in that position.

Not only does it remind them that their life is not as fascinating as others, but it could also make them withdraw from society. This might lead young people to have a huge sense of anxiety when posting media, if they are in fear of what others might think.

However, over the past few years’ research has shown that it can also have negative effect on young people such as

Most young people are developing an addiction to their phones, to the point where they deprive themselves of sleeping time. The addiction is caused by the need of confirmation from other people about how cool or pretty they are. This can cause them to feel like they are in competition with their social media followers. Being too active on social media can cause low self-esteem and lead to anxiety, poor sleep patterns, and depression.

THE SELF IMAGE OF YOUNG PEOPLE? Social media can really make you feel worse about yourself if you build your confidence around how many likes you get.

In my own experience, I feel that platforms like Instagram make girls think they need to look a certain way. If you are not mentally resilient, this might cause anxiety.

The new beautiful is now “big bum, small waist, and a face full of makeup”. Everyone is trying fit into this stereotype, due to the Kardashian’s phenomena on Instagram.

Is this healthy? Young women force themselves to eat to get their bum bigger, or not to eat in order to get a smaller waist.

This can lead to psychosis around nutrition as well, such as bulimia or anorexia. I believe celebrities that set the “example” on social media are responsible for this. Given the fact that they are very wealthy they can do whatever they need to easily achieve their looks. But for the majority of people, this is not the case and this can be fatal for some.

Through my painting, I deliberately wanted to expose the dif-

ferences in the image people show on social media in comparison to how they really look in their normal daily life, without tricks. I did this by showing pictures of me I posted on Instagram alongside some pictures I took at home of myself that I would never show anybody.

Which one is the real me? It’s hard to say because neither of them is a true representation of myself. Therefore destroying the picture with the paint was a way to make a statement about this. The splashes symbolise the idea that all images are lies in one way or another, and therefore, we shouldn’t give them so much importance.

I would like to share this message amongst my peers to make them think they should not rely on social media to build their confidence but rather meet people in real life and develop true positive relationships with each other.

WHERE Writing College Applications This is the time in the academic year when we have completed most of our exams and we are fast approaching the summer holidays. September seems like a long way away, and it is. It is also the start of something new and something big for both Y10 and Y11.

I have completed quite a few college applications and they all ask you to write something about yourself.

It is quite difficult to write about yourself and to try and sell yourself, but you need to develop skills to do this as you will do this many times; in applications for university and college, as well as job applications.

nEXT? Life after School What will you be doing after School?

You should try and think of all the possibilities, College, 6th Form or apprenticeships.

Look around the College or School.

Do your research and go to open days, find out all you can about the College, job or apprenticeship.

Making the application Read the application form thoroughly and complete it in full. Create an email address that is sensible, elephantears@gmail.com does not sound professional.

Experience You do not need to include a lot of experience, no one is expecting you to have completed a lot of voluntary work, or to have worked in lots of places, but if you have worked before or won prizes this is relevant.

Check your form before you send it off You want to present your best self so make sure you check the form for grammatical and spelling errors.

Health and Social Care Netball is a seven-a-side game mainly played by females. It was founded in August 1927 in Australia. Netball attributes its roots to basketball, however, the rules of Netball do not allow you to travel around the court when you are in possession of the ball.

Netball was first played in England in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg’s College. In the first half of the 20th century, Netball’s popularity continued to grow, with the game being played in many British Commonwealth countries.

The objective of the game is for each teams to pass a ball around the court and shoot it into the goal ring to score points.

During play, a player with the ball can only take one step before passing it. She must also pass or shoot for goal within three seconds.

The assigned players can only score goals.

What is Netball?

Netball Rules: • The hoop is smaller than a basketball hoop and there is no backboard.

• Players must not run or dribble with the ball.

• The ball is smaller.

• The possession time for the ball is 3 seconds and this applies to all players.

• Playing areas are restricted to players and each has their own position • Only two players are allowed to shoot goals, Goal Attack and Goal Shooter.

Netball was introduced in Jamaica by an English woman who was teaching at a secondary school how to play.

Since 1959 the game has become part of physical education programme.

The first Jamaican netball team to play was formed in 1959. They were finally invited to a West Indies tournament in Montserrat in August of the same year.

The Jamaican netball team is known as the Sunshine Girls. Since the first international game in 1959, the Sunshine Girls have participated in every world netball championship, finishing no lower than sixth.

Fairnes The Thought for the Week at Abbey Manor College was fairness. Last week’s thought was justice. The Construction group thought deeply about these words; was there fairness and justice in the world, or was that a fairy tale that parents told their children?

We were wondering if fairness and justice were only for the rich, and poor people were left to rot. We know that many people may disagree, but if that is not the case, how do you explain Grenfell.

It is coming up to a year since the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire, which caused 71 deaths and over 70 injuries. The question we kept asking ourselves? Were the residents treated fairly?

In school we are taught to treat everybody fairly which makes sense in our small community, but what about fairness in the wider

ss community. We wanted to know why the fire spread so quickly through the building killing so many people. We had a class discussion about the different reasons why the fire spread. Once a `fire has started, it is likely to spread until all the fuel has been used up. Fire experts have claimed that cladding on the building was a possible reason why the blaze spread so quickly. An alternative cladding with better fire resistance was refused due to cost. The tower is in an area with a big gap between rich and poor.

Are poor people treated the same way as the rich, because in England we are meant to have a fair system?

The Grenfell disaster has taught us that even though we have come a long way, we must still fight for equality and fairness. We as people want a society that treats its entire citizen with dignity.

Music Are drugs glorified in modern-day rap music?

I’ve recently been looking into the link between HipHop and drugs.

Is it glorified in today’s HipHop music?

How many artists are really about living that life?

By us buying this music, does it glorify it?

Do we as normal people have any part to play??

Unfortunately, I can’t get through all of this in this one newsletter post but I would like to give you my thoughts on it.

The number of drug references in rap music has risen since the genre revolutionised pop music.

Researchers who analysed the lyrics of hundreds of songs say rap has been transformed from one, which warned against the dangers of drug abuse to one that routinely glorifies it.

And because many of the references are coded, many parents are unaware of what their children are listening to.

Rappers use different slang referring to drugs to attract listeners due to the types of drugs the listeners take. This will intrigue people because they like to hear someone talking about something they do and the way the drug makes them feel.

These Rappers do this in their lyrics such as, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Future, 21 Savage, Meek Mill, etc.

Young Thug lyrics say, “28 floors up I feel like I could F.Y.L.E.E”. The real meaning of him saying this is, He’s so much “higher” than his competition – it is also a reference to him being high in general. Furthermore, Future says, “And I keep a pint of cup of purple like Whoopi”.

This is referring to a drink that involves codeine mixed with sprite. Artists make a reference to their favourite drink,

“Dirty Sprite” often used in the movie CHAMPAGNE & DIRTY SPRITE.

There are a lot of references that back the idea of HipHop and drugs being one of the same cultures but on the flip side, you have my artists in Hip-Hop who do not condone this.

A well know person, for example, is an artist called ‘Akala’. He is British born but is very conscious of what is going on around the world.

He states in his song – Amazing “Drugs are nothing but the systems way of dividing our unit, They wanna leave us with no manhood like a eunuch.”

This implies that the government is fully aware of how this is affecting us as a community but still don’t do anything about it, to the point where we lose our manhood once we are incarcerated.

I could go on all day about this but however you view HipHop, it is relative to that person. That goes for any entertainment. We are all responsible for ourselves.

Business Studies Business Studies this year has really pushed me to think about life and what I want to achieve later on. It has even helped me complete my HPQ which was on the food chain McDonald’s and its popularity with consumers.

Business Studies inspired my thinking for my HPQ because we looked into all the different ways businesses use promotional mixes and marketing to target customers to make more money.

I wanted to investigate how popular McDonald’s really was, and to find out if it wasn’t just my age group that was addicted to the taste of their food.

I also wanted to find out if there were any other reasons people liked McDonald’s. For example, do they go to McDonald’s because of the chains branding, slogan or customer experience?

From my conversations with my fellow students and other adults, I found that people go to McDonald’s just because it is a quick and easy option. One person told me: “When I am hungry I don’t have to cook anything or hunt for food, I can

just go to McDonald’s and get something in less than 5 minutes.” I found that McDonald’s is not really what people want, but because it is so easily accessible as people buy their food because of the convenience.

I would not have been able to think critically about my HPQ if it wasn’t for all the work I had been doing in Business. My Business Studies course taught me to think about the marketing and product placement behind McDonald’s, it really helped me to think outside of the box, and because of this, I was able to pass my HPQ which I am really proud of.

Outstanding achievement Since joining Abbey Manor College in April, all the BTEC Business Studies students have made significant progress – with 88% of them being on track to complete their Level 2 by the end of the academic year.

However, there are a few achievers who I feel deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions over the past 6 weeks. I would like to congratulate Aterah Williams for completing unit one in record speed and Raj Clarke for making significant progress across all units. Both of these students are great role models and I am excited to see how well they do in their exams.

Catering This term the Catering department has been researching and experimenting with different types of dishes with nutrition and healthy eating as the main focus but also related to their coursework. We have used vegetables in desserts and salads to make them healthier dishes but, still giving that impression that you are treating yourself with something different.

The experiments have been hit and a miss, but one recipe has stood out above the rest through a group discussion with students. The overall winner was a Nicoise salad, which contains protein, dairy, fresh salad, and vegetables. This dish can feeds a variety of different diets from older people who enjoy choosing the healthier option to younger people who are advised by the Government to follow their 5 a day recommendation and staying fit &healthy.

The Catering department now feels that this recipe could soon make an appearance on the school menu.

Science Since the mapping of the human genetic code, there has been an increase in the use of genetic data in many sections of our lives. The Human Genome Project was mainly focused on the use of genetic information in the treatment of diseases whose treatment had been very challenging in the medical field.

For just a few pounds a bit of spit in a tube could take you on a journey of genetic self-discovery. There are companies like (23andme.com) offering to analyse your DNA, or parts of it, to let you in on everything from your health risk and ancestry to more dubious traits like intelligence and athletic ability.

The results of these tests can be very enlightening, (See Momondo’s 2018 YouTube video “Let’s open our world”).

But consumer genetic testing also comes with inherent risks, privacy loss being one of them.

Many of the consumer genetic testing companies will provide lengthy, yet vague, privacy statements written at

Privacy risk for some people lies in the ancestry testing. Consumers often don’t

realise that their genetic data could be combined with the personal information they share on various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat unintentionally revealing more about themselves and unsuspecting family members. For instance, people conceived through anonymous sperm donation have tracked down their biological fathers through paternal relation found via ancestry testing, even if the donors themselves haven’t had their DNA analysed.

If there is ever a data breach at these testing companies, and there is a data dump on a public website, then this information could be used by security agents like the police to solve crimes or by individuals to achieve their own objectives.

Travel and Tourism Currently, Travel and Tourism students are busy completing coursework and planning a study trip to London Southbank to collect data for project work.

Planning a trip is a great responsibility. There are a lot of essential elements to remember. How you are traveling there? What is the location of the venue? and what the reason you are going there?

The most important things to consider are, making sure the destination you are going to is safe and that you are knowledgeable about the area.

This minimises risks and safeguarding concerns if you are taking students on the trip.

Before you go on a trip teachers should ask the students what they think could go wrong so they can avoid it when they go on a trip. By doing things this way you place some responsibility on the students so that they are aware of and remember the dangers whilst on a school trip.

First Story 2017-2018 The First Story programme had another successful year when we were privileged to work with author in residence Michelle Madsen. Michelle is a well-established writer, journalist, poet and performer who has worked and performed across the globe in countries including Belgium, America and Argentina.

The First Story students took part in exciting and educational trips: the Young Writers’ Festival at Oxford University where they listened to famous authors including John Agard, Grace Nichols, William Fiennes and Juno Dawson, and participated in various workshops, and the Tate Modern Gallery to look at and discuss work by Marina Abramovic – a Serbian performance artist.

One of the First Story students has been accepted for a residential in July. This will be an amazing opportunity to meet with writers and young people from all over the country, building writing and life skills and making friendships by working as part of a team, all set in the

beautiful English countryside.

The First Story group completed and edited their anthologies including a design for the book cover which has now been sent to print for publishing. The much anticipated book, of which the students are extremely proud of, will be available to purchase at our Celebration of Achievement Evening in July.

LADYWELL DEMENTIA CENT Welcomes The Lord Mayor of Lewisham Ladywell Dementia Day Centre Summer Party Let The Sunshine In! On Friday 13th July the students from the JE5 Explorer group teamed up with the Ladywell Dementia Day Centre to throw a wonderful summer garden party for the residents of centre.

The party celebrated three months of hard work as the students pruned, weeded and made the garden safe for the residents to enjoy during the blistering heatwave.

To add to the razzle dazzle of the occasion the party was attended by the newly elected Mayor of Lewisham Damien Egan, Chief Executive Ian Thomas and lead Councilor for Adult Social Care Councilor Chris Best.

To prepare for the party the students baked 50 red,

John Evelyn Campus is Proud white and blue cupcakes for the guests. Needless to say, these cakes went down a treat. When the party got under way, JE5 students Sarah Jane Ferguson and Joshua Ellison charmed the guests with their tales of how the garden was transformed and received high praise for the group’s efforts.

The project was a long, labour of love. We had our moments. We got stung by nettles. We filled over five bags of leaves and twigs every session. We shared smiles. We learned about empathy. We made the residents happy.

We did a good thing. And that makes us proud.

Professional Sports Trips to TNG give us a chance to get a change of scenery and routine from our normal day at Abbey Manor.

Firstly, we get to travel on the minibus which many of us haven’t had the chance to do before. This is fun as it allows us to have new experiences off site. TNG have a range of activities that are fun. We get to play indoor table tennis, this is fun because it is a competitive game and several of us get to play at once. This is good because we only have one table tennis table at Abbey Manor so only two people can play at one time. TNG also have an outdoor football facility as well as a gym.

We have both these things at Abbey Manor but it is nice to be able to play in a differ-

ent environment, outside of the school.

TNG also has a games room with consoles and the latest video games. This is fun as they have many multiplayer games so several of us can play at once, with our friends. We don’t have any consoles at Abbey Manor, so again this is a chance to experience something we wouldn’t get to do at school.
