01 | PERCEPTION OF SPACE

WHAT MAKES A SPACE?

Usual elements that define space such as columns and walls do not necessarily have to be directly connected to the floor plate in order to provide a sense of space.

Open field can still feel divided into different spaces but it will be defined differently by people who look at the space.

By having diverse interpretations of same space from different perspective allows for continuous transformation and fluctuation of defined space.

Phenomenal transparency is conceptual transparency which deals with a quality inherent in the spatial or volumetric organization.

By perceiving that one element is in front of another, we can assume a space that is not seen. We are used to spaces that are defined by ceiling, walls, and floors creating a direct boundary.

De Stijl is two-dimensional, flattened art that suggests depth into the space by layering of geometry. Geometry defined by colors red, blue, yellow, black, and white - can be interpreted as walls, columns, floors referring to the possibility of developing into threedimensional occupied volume.

01 SKETCH

: studying relationship between line and plane This sketch is an exploration of the perception of space by playing with thickness and continuity of lines. Lines can be read as plane, volume, or both depending on perception.

02 VOLUME

: studying change in perception of space by viewpoint Volumes are differently defined based on the two-dimensional sketch.

Graphic on the right shows thin line can have deeper volume while thick line is hollow.

This is contradicting naturally perceived interpretation of thickness of lines.

Color is added to define uniformed element into different elements. Imaginary spaces are created by pushing and pulling of colors. This questions the gap (imaginary spaces) between colors and elements by forming “scalelessness�.

03 VISUAL

: studying change in perception of space through phenomenal transparency Layering of elements intrigues people to define possible spaces. Colors are introduced to provide another way to define spaces differently. This shows “space” can be interpreted differently by definition.

Transparency is used to create spaces with depth. It shows relationship among elements through arrangement. This brings up a question “what is defining spaces - color, plane, people, or all?”

04 PATH

: studying the effect of color on perception of three-dimensional space and creation of new path This graphic is thinking transparency in three-dimensional space. By adding colors, original space can be read differently by blurring the boundary.

Graphics on the right are combinations of different parts from the three-dimensional spaces. This combinations form new spaces and show that different parts can be read as one by following color as pathway.

celebration of De Stijl route De Stijl magazine publication historical + important buildings canal parks

01 SITE

: Leiden, Netherlands World War I brought artists back to Netherlands since Netherlands was neutral during the war. Artists who wanted to create Utopian world gathered and formed De Stijl.

The red building is where De Stijl magazine was published. Canal is in front of the site, acknowledging the historical importance. The site, marked in pink on the right, is closed off and narrow by surrounding buildings.

The pathway leading to the site is 5 feet wide. Therefore, adjacent commercial buildings marked in yellow are demolished in order to create easier access to the site from both side of the street. The site was chosen to highlight the significance of De Stijl and the history of Netherlands in thesis designing.

Coffee Shop

06 PROGRAM

: studying how different programs can fit into this iteration and how overlapping, shared spaces can blur the boundaries This graphic is trying to keep phenomenal transparency in three-dimensional building form by having screens and layering system.

The coffee shop is placed on ground level to make public space - everyone has to enter through. Another side of the coffee shop is cantilevered to canal side for the view.

Garden is formed with number of open framed volumes for trees to grow through - blurring the boundary between exterior and interior. De Stijl art Workshop is placed towards where De Stijl magazine was published to have visual connection. The gallery is main vertical element that connects all programs, functioning as circulation. People can walk up the building while enjoying exhibited art work.

07 SECTION

: visualizing how the volumes overlap and interact to create phenomenal transparency This graphic shows how people can actually occupy the volumes with floor plates and screens interrupting the movement.

Making building form iteration into sections suggests improvements to be made for next iteration - circulation, exterior envelope, structure, and material of the building.

OVERVIEW

Design a gallery that displays De Stijl artworks and other artworks that townspeople created at the public library art session. The gallery should contain the perspective of space idea studied as thesis concept.

Creating a space that can be defined differently by individuals experiencing the gallery. Ultimately allowing a rigid building to have continuous fluctuation of movement in terms of every individual’s interpretation and definition of space.

Inspired by the idea of phenomenal transparency and De Stijl movement, gallery for De Stijl related art exhibition is designed by questioning the definition of space.

The gallery is divided into four different thresholds - frame, structural grid, circulation, and screens or walls.

The frame gives emphasis to the art work while also blurring the boundary between spaces, possibly working as a dividing line.

The structural grid punctures through the entire building suggesting that every movement happening inside are being framed and become De Stijl art.

Circulation enhances the experience of the blurred boundary between inside and outside.

The screens and walls also blur the boundary between spaces by limiting the views but allowing sounds to filter through.

Interior perspective on the right is portrayed with primary colors that De Stijl artists used in order to represent gallery in terms of De Stijl.

People can walk into the gallery and can have their definition of space differently - by looking at floor plate, steel grid structure that punctures through the building, beams crossing over the head, wall or screen hanging above, etc.

Introducing different elements not necessarily directly touching the floor provides numerous options for people to experience the gallery.

Design a winery for research and visitors by using primarily steel in a challenging but sensible and ecological fashion while thinking about facade

Tempered storage space and tempered operation space with research exhibition/lecture room, research lab that can be also used for grape pressing, office space, primary and secondary fermentation, bottling and bottle storage, tasting and sales/gift shop, and machine storage

Creating a little village of winery by grouping spaces with similar operating functions and focusing on the hanging rooms and revealing structure in the tasting building

The tasting building is supported by steel truss structure on the roof, one side where circulation occurs, and the floor creating "C" shape.

This allows interior to be structurally independent from the exterior envelope.

The structure is revealed to people in three different ways. First by having open roof structure in order to hang four tasting rooms.

Secondly by placing number of glass-covered openings on the main floor for people to look into ground structure. Lastly, locating transition space inside the truss structured wall creating "cageness".

One side of the building has exterior envelope of perforated aluminum screening system which continues to the roof creating a flow while contrasting with other three sides of the heavy concrete walls.

OVERVIEW

Design an urban climbing gym that will offer dynamic and diverse experiences for climbers of all ages in a facility that fosters a sense of community

CRITERIA

At least 3 bouldering walls or islands, minimum of 3 perches on multiple levels, kiosk for gear sales with associated storage, small workshop for equipment repairs, administrative suite, changing rooms with showers, event space with storage, co-working space, outdoor bouldering space

Creating continuous dialogue between exterior and interior which promotes interaction and communication between townspeople and students

The only public space that allows both townspeople and students to interact is Farmers Market & Market Square Park (shaded circle).

Focusing on people’s flow, locations of bus stops (dots) and parking lot (shaded areas) are studied. There are enough parking lots and meter parkings for visitors from the far.

Additionally, the closest parking lot is located right next to the site. People without cars can still have easy access by using Blacksburg Transit.

Design a sailing school that involves classroom instruction and hands-on lessons on the water by using primarily wood

CRITERIA

Unconditioned spaces with covered storage for sailboats and secure storage for equipment. Conditioned spaces with two classrooms, conference room, computer lab, library, kitchenette, office, storage, laundry, and restrooms with showers. Outdoor meeting/instructional space, vehicular access for loading/ unloading, and dock for launching and mooring sailboats

The wooden deck crosses the sailing school creating connectivity and fluidity of the movement.

Spaced wood screen walls that are screwed to wooden framing structure are used in public area. Also translucent roofs are used on boat storage and main pathway. Both screens and roofs create open and light atmosphere.

roof top activity area Making two layers of roof connected by wood framing created the main pathway roof to also act as a guardrail on the roof top activity area. The translucent roof is created by using polycarbonate panels. Polycarbonate panels are screwed to wood framing. Each panels are connected by putting narrow profile caps and joiner caps over the screws.

The wooden deck is connecting land to lake by stretching throughout the sailing school.

Continuous deck allows people to move boats easily from the storage to the lake.

On the first level of the sailing school, there are two classrooms, conference room, office, kitchenette, restrooms, and laundry. The boat storage is attached to the sailing school and is connected through office area.

Second floor has computer lab and library with outdoor space to the right, and roof top activity area to the left.

From the outdoor activity area, people can look into translucent roof of main pathway of the first floor. floor 01
