This year see’s the Rugby Festival of Culture celebrate its fifth birthday. It’s amazing to see how in such a short space of time it has grown and gained in popularity. It continues to provide a wonderful showcase for the rich and diverse range of cultural activities within the borough… and of course a brilliant platform for the local and wonderfully talented creative individuals and groups that continue to support the festival. These along with the businesses are the face and life-blood of the event and make it extra special - something we all should be very proud of within the borough. A heart felt thank you to all those involved along with our advertisers, sponsors and of course Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council for their continued enthusiastic and committed support.

Northlands Primary School will sing songs written for them by local musicians Jen Elvy and Jo Foote. The words of Lewis Carroll’s poems in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ have been set to music in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the book’s publication. This event, organised by Northlands School and St Andrew’s Church, is directly followed by the exciting Rugby Theatre ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ which is advertised immediately alongside.

photography? See Rugby is a local arts project offering two practical workshops, run by an experienced local artist and teacher, to learn creative photography skills using your mobile phone; DSLRs or compacts are also welcome!

As part of the workshop, you will: - Have the opportunity to submit your photographs for exhibition during the Rugby World Cup 2015 - Gain understanding of a range of basic photography techniques such as depth of field, the rule of thirds and using filters - Learn how to apply these techniques to compose a successful photograph Be prepared to get out and about: part of the event includes a short walking tour around Rugby town centre in which we will be going to key locations and looking for sights to take in and to practice our photography skills with.

If you know your scenes from your subplots, this workshop for adults interested in writing children’s fiction will help you craft powerful prose that’s sure to captivate your readers like a penalty shoot out!

Julia Wills is the author of Fleeced! and Rampage! (Piccadilly Press), comedy-adventures for readers of ages 8 and upwards. Both stories feature Aries, the fabulous ram whose golden fleece was stolen by Jason and the Argonauts of Greek mythology. Fleeced! was chosen by a nationwide panel of librarians and children for last year’s Arts Council Summer Reading Challenge and has gained several great reviews on Amazon, The Guardian Children’s website and from other children’s authors. It has also been translated and published in Germany. The sequel ‘Rampage!’ was published in April 2015.

conversation with Edward Seckerson That Patricia Routledge - best known for TV comedy roles like Hyacinth Bucket - trained not only as an actress but also as a singer remains one of the best kept secrets in showbusiness.

Yet not so long ago she enjoyed huge success in musical theatre on both sides of the Atlantic, winning a Tony for her Broadway performance in ‘Darling of the Day’ and a Laurence Olivier Award for her West End role in Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide’.

24 MICRO FILM FESTIVAL The Micro Film Festival encourages

film makers of all types to submit their short masterpieces for a chance to have them showcased in front of an audience on the digital BIG SCREEN! There are two categories: under-16s and over-16s. Each category has its own evening to showcase the shortlisted films. Submissions will be viewed by a panel of judges and the top 10 films from each category will be selected to be showcased during the Rugby Festival of Culture.

TEA LEAF THEATRE Showcasing the talents of Tea Leaf Tales, a

local drama group for independent adults with learning difficulties.

Listen, smile, laugh and be inspired by their telling of The Moon, a story collected by The Brothers Grimm. This is the culmination of a project funded by an Awards for All Lottery grant in which the group received training in the skills of telling stories and worked alongside professional Storytellers and Musicians to develop their unique version of the

story. Using storytelling, drama, live music and original songs, their performance will have the perfect backdrop of the beautiful setting in St Andrew’s Church.

The audience will be encouraged to stay and chat to the performers over refreshments provided by the Church after the performance.

THE ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC The Academy of Ancient Music, renowned as one of the world’s finest orchestras, thrilling audiences with its fresh, engaging performances of baroque and classical music will present a programme entitled Angelic Baroque: Music for Soprano and Trumpet on Tuesday 30th June at 7.30pm in TSR. Playing on period instruments and inspired by the soundworlds composers might have known, the AAM has changed the perceptions of a generation of musiclovers through its concerts and recordings of music from Monteverdi to Beethoven.

Blackadder who is widely regarded as the world’s greatest baroque natural trumpet player. Both Philippa and David regularly perform with AAM and also teach in the music department at Rugby School. The programme will be packed full of baroque classics, culminating in the ever popular Let the bright Seraphim from Handel’s Samson.

Members of The Bliss Sinfonia, Rugby School’s professional orchestra-in-residence, will join with pupils from the school’s Symphony Orchestra in a programme of orchestral classics to include Beethoven’s Symphony no. 8, Conga del Fuego Nuevo by Marquez and Symphonic Suite from The Lord of the Rings. STEPHEN RAINE - PIANO RECITAL British pianist Stephen Raine graduated from the

London College of Music with First Class Honours in 2013. He was born in Durham and began studying music at the age of 6 before moving to London to pursue a career as a pianist. SCIROCCO WIND ENSEMBLE In 1995, a group of local

instrumentalists formed The Scirocco Wind Ensemble. They just happened to play flutes, clarinets and saxophones and have stuck with this combination ever since, producing their unique sound. The ensemble has gone from strength to strength and its 20 members have performed at many events in and around Rugby and beyond.
