Using hats and clothing is the first line of defense from the sun. Sunscreen is recommended for the smaller areas that can’t be covered by clothing. Remember that babies can be well covered from the sun but be exposed to reflective light from the ground or water from a pool or the ocean It is a good idea to place a small amount of sunscreen on your baby’s skin before you plan to use it on wider areas. This is to enable you to check for any irritation or reaction that the sunscreen may have. Look for sunscreens labeled “sensitive” for babies and young children. Pram covers should fully cover the pram with no gaps, and be made of closely meshed material. When travelling with babies in a car, the front windscreen reflects 93% of UV rays, the side windows where children sit let far more UV rays in. Use a window shade to protect them while travelling. Look for shades or visors that are UPF 15 rated or above. Packing plenty of light long sleeved and long legged clothing, hat and sunscreen in your nappy bag will mean that you are always be prepared for the sun and your baby.
