PRECEDENT STUDIES
Year: 2011
Summary: The goal of this design was to seamlessly integrate the natural surrounding environment into the built environment of the rehabilitation center in order to elevate both patient and staff experience. This design is successful as full height glazing along the central space connnecting the various different internal elements of the building ensures an almost seamless continuity between interior and exterior. The meandering facade in the restaurant results in a building in between trees and invites the forest inside the building. The surrounding nature has a strong visual and tangible presence everywhere in the building. Rehabilitation Centre Groot Klimmendaal was awarded Building of the Year 2010 by the Dutch Association of Architects, winner of the first Hedy d’Anocona Award 2010 for excellent healthcare architecture, winner of the Arnhem Heuvelink Award 2010 and winner of the Dutch Design Award 2010 public award and category commercial interior.

Design Implications: - The use of natural materials brings warmth into the space and helps eliminate the association of healthcare facilities as cold and sterile. - Views to the outdoors are not only aesthetically pleasing but also aid in patient healing. Integrate views to the outdoors in public spaces whenever possible. - Design of the facility should be accessible to not only patients, but their families and the surrounding community. Summary: The Egmont High School holds a position as Denmark’s leading institution for people with physical disabilities. Multifaceted accessibility characterizes the schools entity, and everybody is dedicated to this responsibility. The new rehabilitation centre provides a statement, a landmark that exposes the functional needs of the school architecturally and thus provides a renewed identity to the school’s old buildings. An identity that will be visible towards the main thoroughfare of the small town of Hou. Vandhalla breaks with existing standards and help to develop state of the art within the disability field. It gives the school much needed and important facilities, with the opportunity to combine training of cognitive and social skills with physical training.

Design Implications: - Create spaces that are easily accessible to all users, regardless of physical ability to create a truly inclusive environment. - Design spaces that are flexible in use to accomodate both cardiac and physical therapy patients as well as gym members. - Design of the facility should encourage independance of all users through careful implementation of ADA standards, clear wayfinding, and total accessibility. Design Implications: - Providing for staff comfort leads to better performance and patient care. - Provide appropriate circulation to accommodate the activities of different stakeholders. Many of the stakeholders are constantly circulating throughout the space. - Calming lighting, cool colors, and easy wayfinding will minimize stress in all stakeholders. - Provide proper spaces to assist staff in developing and maintaining the centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs and business. - Provide visual access to all potentially dangerous, unstaffed spaces. - Create an interior design environment that supports the energy and activity of each of each of the potential stakeholders. - Appropriately separate gender-specific areas as well as private therapy rooms to ensure a sense of privacy for those in need. - Provide proper fitness equipment and flexibility in their arrangements for patron comfort and high functionality

- Consider the seasonal shifts and their effects on the interior. During the summer, harsh sunlight through the windows can potentially damage sensitive materials and irritate users. Heavy rainfall can lead to wet floors, so incorporate slip/ water resistant flooring.

Design Implications: - Provide proper impact flooring for each space for fall attenuation and appropriate cushioning for bone and joint health. - Designing for loss of mobility with inclusive and properly spaced equipment. - Limiting dark corners and dead end corridors for proper flow and providing alarms or call buttons in key remote spaces such the therapy rooms, group fitness areas, locker rooms and restrooms. - Ensure good indoor air quality, proper ventilation and plenty of natural light.
PROBLEM ASSESSMENT 10
PROBLEM STATEMENT The current location of the previous Toys R Us at 1625 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee Fl lacks a tenant, and therefore functionality and visual representation. We are proposing a Fitness and Rehabilitation space to fill this vacancy and revitalize this area of Tallahassee. The space needs to address the needs of the community, in that, there are no similar rehabilitation or fitness centers in the Tallahassee area that are purposefully inclusive for all ages and abilities. With no similar centers in the area, there is a definitive need for a space like this. Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adult obesity rate is currently 28.4%, up from 18.4% in 2000 and from 11.4% in 1990, while the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s obesity rate is at 16.9%. This center will aid in solving this issue by providing a place of health enhancement, one that reaches a higher level of accessibility for the community than the current centers in Tallahassee. It will be a center with unlimited access to programs and equipment, an inclusive community for all ages and abilities.

CONCEPT STATEMENT In nature, the forest canopy serves as the protective layer above the diverse plant community below. The canopy filters sunlight and rainfall, provides protection from storms and strong winds, and promotes the diversity and growth of the lower layers. The design of the new Wellness Center is inspired by the idea of the surrounding Tallahassee forest canopies with the goal of promoting connections between visitors and staff as well as their overall health and wellbeing. Clear wayfinding, accessible equipment, biophilic elements, open space planning, a nature inspired color palette, and flexible spaces will accommodate these goals. Users of the space will find comfort, encouragement, assurance, and hope while within the space.

PROJECT GOALS - To design a space in which patients, gym members, staff, family members, caretakers, and all other visitors feel welcome, comfortable, assured, uplifted, and at home even beyond their visit.
