Robert Munger, the gin's original owner is a figure of innovation His improved cotton gin design changed the industry, and spread his patents all over the country After adopting Birmingham as his new home, he gave charitably to the city, and left a lengthy legacy, rooted in creativity, striving for excellence, and an emphasis on family values. He and his wife, had a total of nine children, each who played a significant role in the story of the Continental Gin's success and preserving the Munger legacy in Birmingham. Their namesakes inspired many of the spaces throughout the Robley project, starting with their firstborn son, Robley himself.
The Continental Gin site in Birmingham is a physical representation of the city's character, its resilience, and its ever-evolving story. What was once a factory, buzzing with machines, populated by soot-covered workers, and contributing to the on-the-rise economy of early 20th century Birmingham, now sits quietly tucked away, with most of its story forgotten. The Robley reimagines this rich landmark at the heart of Birmingham's revitalization The intent is to create a mecca, where both locals and tourists alike draw together in curiosity & seeking connection.
BACKSTORY
Robley | Leo | Margot | Collett Ethel | Ruby | Rosa | Eugene | Mary 3
The purpose of The Robley is to activate the Continental Gin (a historic cotton gin) for the modern needs of growing Birmingham, while intentionally cultivating a brand identity that hinges on historical design elements that celebrate the site's character. The design intent is to cultivate a legacy of community-centered built environments that play a key role in Birmingham's renaissance. The character of the brand is rooted in Robert Munger's eye for innovation, creative spirit, and emphasis on family values. The project is designed to bring life back to the Continental Gin that spreads throughout the Avondale neighborhood, with an energy that spills into the greater Birmingham area.
The Robley is a collective of both public and private amenities cultivating community, engaging curiosity, and exhibiting a piece of Birmingham's history. Composed of four main spaces The Robley Hotel, The Margot Building, The Collett Market, and The Ethel Space The Robley compound invites tourists and Birmingham locals alike to explore, indulge, and commune.

Designed alongside Kari Baker, Sarah Burrow, Caroline Reeves, and Neely Turner.
It embodies the energy and welcoming spirit of the people it will serve.
It is accessible to everyone
It gives the community a sense of belonging

The meaning of this slogan is to think differently and to stand out. It is important to the company that people embrace individuality and encourage people to not always "follow the rules".

The form of 'Veer' is inspired by postmodernism, but also incorporates a black walnut wood material in order to remain true. The postmodern style started in 1970 and lasted till the1990s. The style embraces the idea of being "unconventional". The shapes throughout the era are unordinary and often prioritize form over function.
The design plays with the juxtaposition of a natural and traditional material with an unconventional postmodern form in order to create a transitional piece.

After designing 'Veer', it was noted that the chair back reclines approximately 13.5" in the center of the chair, so the seat is lower in the back than it is in the front in order to keep a correct angle when slightly reclined. The seat height is at 18". The more someone is positioned to the right in the chair, the more reclined they will be. The more they are positioned to the left in the chair, the more upright that will be. Show in diagram is the "T" line that shows the slight recline of one's upper body when positioned in the chair.

This is an existing apartment building designed by Mies van der Rohe in Chicago, IL. This project involves the designing of the common areas as well as a one of the residential spaces.
The design creates spaces in 860 Lakeshore Drive that don’t take your attention away from the detailed city view, but instead highlights what the view has to offer. The residential space will be a place that provides a simplistic yet expressive design in order to highlight the beauty of the city. The design will have an easy-to-follow orientation, that keeps functionality in mind. These spaces in this building will bring modern and international design aspects to the interior of the building in order to complement the architecture and surrounding city.
