WELCOME... ... to our jam-packed Autumn season.

It’s time to celebrate as our building is 100 years old this year! The Theatre was originally an Electricity Works (hence our name) built in 1913 and some of the original features can still be seen in our Auditorium, the oldest part of the building.

Our Autumn season promises to be very busy, packed with a whole variety of events including comedy from the quick-witted Lee Hurst (p13), an all male Christmas tale in Nativity in Creakebottom (p15), musicals, concerts and plays from talented local companies and our annual Christmas production from resident youth theatre The Man In The Moon (Excalibur p18). We’re particularly looking forward to our two week art house and world cinema festival in September (p6) plus the exciting Guildford Book Festival in October (p9). Peter James, Kate Mosse and Sebastian Faulks are already lined up to appear so it promises to be a fantastic week of literary treats.

After several sold out events, our programme of jazz music continues, in partnership with Guildford Jazz. Look out for the four fantastic Jazz Café events this season (p5, 8, 11 and 16), but please book quickly to avoid missing out.

If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also extended our family programming by introducing an October Family Festival (p10). As part of the national Family Arts Festival we will be hosting six days of family friendly theatre and workshops during the Autumn half term. GATA is an umbrella organisation with 23 societies and groups including theatre and opera companies, singing and youth groups, as well as dancers and film makers. The Association works towards advancing public education in the dramatic arts in and around Guildford and has been a major ally of The Electric Theatre, having been instrumental in its founding. Many of the groups perform at The Electric Theatre year in, year out – why not drop in and see what they’re up to, and maybe join in too? Keep an eye out for auditions, or other ways of getting involved behind the scenes.

In the heart of Guildford and close to transport links, the Theatre provides bright and contemporary spaces ideal for parties, meetings, workshops and performances. JAZZ CAFÉ with the Georgia Mancio/Nigel Price Trio Vocalist and lyricist Georgia Mancio and guitarist Nigel Price combine their award winning talents in this joyous and intimate programme of jazz and Latin songs.

Both regular performers at the world renowned Ronnie Scott’s Club, their show was initially inspired by the musical partnership of the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald and guitar virtuoso Joe Pass. Georgia’s spellbinding storytelling and fiery Italian/Uruguayan roots and Nigel’s deep blues groove and soulful accompaniment are stamped with their own sound and personality. Accompanied by the highly respected bassist Julie Walkington, this trio present a fantastic evening for all ages and musical tastes.

HERITAGE OPEN DAY We are celebrating our centenary this year and there will be a display chronicling our interesting history from Electricity Works, to becoming derelict right through to the present day. Housed in the former 1913 Electricity Works on the banks of the River Wey, The Electric Theatre opened in 1997. The combination of exposed original brickwork and glass walled foyer create a striking juxtaposition between old and new.

SURREY MOZART PLAYERS Music Director Kenneth Woods This first concert of the Orchestra’s 2013/14 season includes a middle period Mozart symphony (No. 33, written in 1779), one of Britten’s best known works for voice and string orchestra (his 1939 setting of a selection of Rimbaud’s poems Les Illuminations) with soprano soloist Louise Alder (sponsored by the Countess of Munster Trust) and Mendelssohn’s First Symphony.

SUN 29 SEPTEMBER THE ELECTRIC COMEDY CLUB We’re thrilled to introduce YouTube sensation and festival darlings, Men in Coats. Hyperactive and most certainly hypothermic, these bad boys break all the rules, denying themselves the benefit of wearing their coats outdoors by (wait for it) wearing them indoors! Expect some wonderfully surreal comedy with plenty of *ahem* ‘jerkin’ around.

JAZZ CAFÉ with the Simon Allen Quartet After being a finalist in Young Jazz Musician of the Year, saxophonist Simon Allen gained a place at the Royal Academy of Music and was selected to join UK drummer Clark Tracey's acclaimed Quintet. Simon is a member of the Laurence Cottle Big Band and Colin Towns' Mask Orchestra and has appeared at major UK venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott's and the Barbican. He has worked with an astonishing array of top musicians including Jamie Cullum, Beverley Knight and Florence Rawlings, as well as releasing an album under his own name Any Minute Now - Simon Allen Quintet. A magical playful children’s show with breathtaking puppets, so enchanting that everyone will want to sail away with Arthur in his dream boat! This brand new show is brought to you by the makers of Shoe Baby and Penguin.

TUE 29 OCTOBER: THE MAN IN THE MOON PLAY IN A DAY Learn, practice and perform Roald Dahl’s brilliant Revolting Rhymes in just one day.

We will be screening George A. Romero’s cult classic Dawn of the Dead. This epic sequel to his legendary Night of the Living Dead is without doubt one of the greatest zombie films of all time. Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

JAZZ CAFÉ with Allison Neale on alto sax and the Marianne Windham Trio Born in Seattle USA, altoist Allison Neale’s beautifully crafted lines evoke the spirit of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper with whom she has a particular affinity.

One of the UK’s most talented saxophonists, and a strong advocate of the melodic West Coast style, she has performed alongside leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall and Bud Shank, as well as featuring in both the John Dankworth Generations Band and the Back to Basie Orchestra. She frequently tours the UK with her current quartet, which also features acclaimed jazz pianist Leon Greening, bassist Julian Bury and drummer Steve Brown and has two CDs to her name - Melody Express and Blue Concept with trumpeter Gary Kavanagh.

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL The Shakespeare Schools Festival works with 1000 secondary, primary and special schools all over the UK, making it possible for them to stage abridged Shakespeare productions in their local professional theatre.

In his new tour, stand up comic Lee Hurst is travelling throughout Britain to find out what really winds you up. Mostly people get on with living their lives, but everyone has at least one thing that pushes their button and sends them over the edge.

What's yours? Come along for a night of laughter and letting off some steam.

Lee is known throughout the comedy business as someone who can pull laughs out of thin air with his razor sharp ability to improvise and ad lib comedy on the spot. Everyone witnessed this when he first hit our TV screens on Have I Got News For You and They Think It's All Over. He is also a regular guest on Channel 5's The Wright Stuff.

JUNCTION 4 BIG BAND Sedac Productions are proud to present the Junction 4 Big Band at The Electric Theatre for the first time. “Cuddle up and dream along” Empire

THE POLAR EXPRESS (U) Dir. Robert Zemeckis - 2004 - USA - 1hr 40min.

One Christmas Eve, a boy lies in bed, listening hard for the bells of Santa’s sleigh, which he has been told by a friend do not exist. Later that night he hears not bells but a very different sound. He looks out of his window and is astounded to see a billowing steam train parked outside his house. The conductor invites him to board The Polar Express, a train filled with children on their way to the North Pole. This heart warming tale is perfect for the whole family, and with free hot chocolate and arty fun, will make children young and old feel all Christmassy. A graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music, and winner of the Young Jazz Player of the Year Competition in 1991, Mark Crooks has worked in a wide range of musical settings including classical work and shows but he is most at home in the jazz world, having played at all of London’s top jazz venues and festivals across the country. Mark’s own group features his clarinet and tenor with the brilliant guitar playing of Colin Oxley and is featured on his highly-rated CDs I Won’t Dance and How My Heart Sings.

Colin is a graduate of the Guildhall School who has pursued a highly successful musical career and was voted Jazz Musician of the Year by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in the year 2000. In between touring and recording Colin is a professor of Jazz Guitar at the Guildhall.

Ghosts, formerly the Guildford Hospitals Theatre, are celebrating their 30th anniversary in style.

As a final tribute to all the members, friends, family, performers and backstage production crew, Ghosts intend to go out with a bang with this, their last cabaret performance.

Fame or infamy? Celebrity or pariah? In post war London, acclaimed actress Irene Trevarrick treads a fine line between the two as revelations about her past threaten to destroy her reputation forever.

Guildburys are delighted to conclude their 50th anniversary year by presenting the world premiere of this scorching new play.

All profits from this production will be going to charities associated with the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

WEEKLY DRAMA WORKSHOPS With the emphasis on fun and performance, our after school drama workshops are designed specifically to develop skills that will benefit children for life. Activities include an exciting mix of; improvisation, role play, drama games, movement and teamwork, fuelling the imagination whilst working towards performance opportunities with new friends. Above all, they're great fun.

All children need to bring with them is enthusiasm. It doesn't matter if they’ve never done any drama before; we all have to start somewhere. PARKING Parking at The Electric Theatre is strictly for disabled patrons. Bedford Road Car Park is just a few minutes walk from the Theatre on Onslow Street. Parking is £1.20 an hour during the day and £1 per evening visit after 6pm. On Sundays parking is £1.50 per visit. For further information and up to date charges visit Guildford Borough Council’s website at www.guildford.gov.uk TRAIN Guildford mainline Station is only a short walk from the Theatre.

BUS An extensive local bus service (including Park and Ride) is available from the Friary Bus Station, again a short distance from the Theatre.

ON FOOT From the town centre, there is an underpass between New Look and TK Maxx in Friary Street. Alternatively, if you are coming from the Friary Shopping Centre, Bus Station or Train Station, there are pedestrian crossings.

CYCLISTS Bike racks are located alongside the main building, just by the main entrance.
