RE-VISITING THE SUBLIME

A Framework for Modern Sublime Landscapes Spring 2020 - Winter 2021 Online : www.cplaseniorshow.com We exist in a resource driven world, and the products of evolving industry and resource extraction often include abandoned spaces littered with decomposing trash, useless structures, and/or toxic soils.

Common approaches defaulted upon by landscape architects include clean slate redevelopment or naturalization. While the environment should remain at the forefront of what professionals consider, there is a disconnect in the social importance of sustainability : if people care about a place and feel impacted by their experience, it is much more likely they will engage in long-term sustainable behaviors. So, what happens when instead of designing away from decay and ruination, we design alongside it?

The sublime is one aesthetic theory which describes human relationships to nature particularly when it comes to evoking deeper, darker emotions. Ruins intrinsically bring about deeper human connections and eight design elements in particular were found to contribute most towards these feelings. Re-Visiting the Sublime translates sublime theory into a modernized framework for landscape architects to use when approaching both the analysis and design of ruined, decaying landscapes.

The definition and applications of the sublime have changed drastically over time. Understanding past interpretations of the sublime illuminate the importance and relevance of the sublime today particularly within landscape architecture. Starting off as a reference to inspiring rhetoric which moved individuals through ‘lofty language’, historic influences have translated sublime ideals into art, literature, psychology, phenomenology, propaganda, ethical dilemmas, and finally, theory-based design in landscape architecture.

This diagram summarizes research done on translating ‘sublime’ experience and emotions into spatial analysis and qualifiable attributes. The sublime is commonly attributed to the balance of Pleasure derived through Terror as well as emotions of Awe and Astonishment. Connecting interpersonal experiences to design and landscape architecture, eight design elements play a key role.

Klau mined opened in 1868 and was one of 150 mercury mines established in San Luis Obispo county.

Mercury mining played a critical role in SLO’s economy during this time.

Due to decreases in mercury demand, the mine closed in 1964 and environmental hazards began to be reported as early as 1970.

By 1990, all mercury mining in the US ceased due to health hazard awareness.

The EPA began clean-up efforts on-site in 1999 due to studies showing mineacid leaking into Las Tablas Creek. $6 million has since been spent on cleaning up mercury pollution and industrial impacts are estimated to still be visible until the year 11850.

This collage captures the essence of the site through color. The base of the collage is an aerial view of the site and establishes the site’s general “base” color.

Site imagery is then layered on top to call out where outlying colors exist on the site on a more personal level of experience. The bottom portion of the collage is an abstract section view of the site to portray the general colors users see as they walk through the site. To capture the potential dynamic layer of natural lighting and its effects on the site, the sun path tracks the color of the sky and its changes during the site visit.

KLAU MINES FOCUS AREAS COLOR Orange LED lights on top of the posts reflect the same orange hues left behind by acid trailings which are one of the many consequences mercury mining left behind. These stains can be found tracing drainage paths on-site as the acid trailings polluted nearby creeks and local water supplies.

TEMPORALITY Converting existing warehouses into enclosed gardens creates sanctuary for users while displaying natural healing processes as natural elements break down man-made interventions.

VASTNESS Remaining original structures and equipment acknowledge the site’s history while reminding users of processes which occured on-site and led towards current conditions.

SALTDALE SUBLIME ANALYSIS Color + Texture

1.

Scale + Temporality

Texture exists as a key component to users’ experience of ruins.

Everything has texture and this texture is directly correlated to the passage of time. Materials carry the most immediately recognizable representation of temporality and even clue users into processes occurring onsite including water collection, animal or human interactions, sun patterns, etc.

Burke directly discusses the significance of scale in sublime landscapes in ‘A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful’ and ranks the sublime effects of length, height, and depth. Length is established as the least sublime and depth as most.

The greater the length, height, and depth, the further away these elements move from the ease and familiarity of human scale. User perception of the landscape becomes boundless and infinite.

Reflecting Saltdale’s industrial past, the metal structures also CONTRAST the expansiveness of the desert landscape.

Due to Koehn Lake being a ‘moist’ playa, users may fall through the sand sinking as deep as thigh level in various areas. No obvious visual cues exist differentiating these spaces from walkable ones. To increase site accessibility and safety, wooden boardwalks and paths will be implemented.

Exhibited : 2019 Geodesign Summit in Redlands, CA Published : Steinitz, Carl et al. The International Geodesign Collaboration: Changing Geography by Design. Esri Press. 14 April 2020.

In Collaboration with Bryce Turk on Design Research collaboration with LA studio 402 Historically, Paso Robles has relied on groundwater for 95% of its water supply to support its viticulture economy; however, facing drought in California, sustainable groundwater management is critical. Dealing with a complex and large scale environmental issue, our studio followed the Geodesign framework to understand Paso Robles in its entirety and propose the best water saving innovations to implement.

The designed site aims at leveraging greywater to be recycled and reused in surrounding areas. A public, engaging space invites unique educational experiences further enriching the surrounding community.

In time, this will ease the depletion of Paso’s underground aquifer and inspire future sustainable development.

Geodesign Large-Scale Contextual Analysis Larger contextual analysis of the parameters of our study were completed through rigorous group collaboration and research to comprehensively understand Paso Robles through all lenses. Six questions are cycled through three iterations of categorical models of analysis. We then collectively established possible sustainable groundwater related innovations to consider for implementation within our designs.

INNOVATION ADOPTION MAPS Through the lens of all possible stakeholders, a series of land use maps were compiled showcasing how each stakeholder would like to see innovations be adopted in the future. Comparing a future with no changes, changes starting in the year 2035, and changes beginning immediately, we were able to establish complications, impactfulness, and how opportunities disappear the longer Paso waits. The maps pictured below are compilations of all stakeholders projecting what Paso’s land use will look like in the year 2050. Early adoption of sustainable groundwater management practices provide the best opportunities and living conditions for Paso’s residents while saving ag land, conserving open space, and networking water systems for open communications and education.

To protect the city of Paso Robles and surrounding areas from experiencing water deprivation, the design aims to leverage greywater through the implementation of a series of retention ponds.

These retention ponds utilize phytoremediation reed beds.

This cleansed water may then be reused within agriculture districts and traded at lowered prices to prevent over draft of the aquifer basin. A second pipe will extend to an existing lake at Barney Schwartz Park where overflow will release into a nearby dry creek bed to naturally replenish the aquifer.

A Floodable Park Encouraging Community Resilience in Lower Hutt, NZ Study Abroad Program Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand Analysis research in collaboration with Keegan Barnett-Bates, Isaac Beetham, Stevie Bracken & Alexa Hozouri Susceptible to a myriad of natural disasters, the Great Wellington Region is currently in the process of planning to strengthen the region’s resiliency in preparation for when these disasters occur. This project narrows in on Lower Hutt after a series of regional scale mapping and analyses as one of the most vulnerable communities in the region.

As climate change builds, sea level rise continuously increases, and 100 year flood events become more frequent, resilient design is needed to adapt communities to the inevitable changes. This floodable park transforms the abandoned brown field of Hutt Rail Workshops into a community space with water conveyance and retention capabilities.

These changes intertwine flood damage mitigation with inviting community spaces for connection and rehabilitation.

Lower Hutt exists as one of the most highly susceptible districts within the Greater Wellington Region to natural disasters. It is prone to both flooding, sea level rise, and liquefaction. Community resiliency from these disasters is notably low due to impermeable surfaces, lack of ecology, low income neighborhoods being low of recovery funding priorities, and one of the most polluted streams in the region spilling out into surrounding houses during almost any significant storm event. This district also sits atop the region’s aquifer, where streams such as Waiwhetu threaten the quality of Wellington’s drinking water supply.

Historically a train workshop, the existing soil is now polluted by metals and chemicals and has led to the area being blocked from community use. These chemicals also drain off-site into Waiwhetu stream during storms.

Located along the bay, this graded trail design emphasizes drainage solutions and site engineering. A designed outlook cantilevers over the edge of the highest point of the trail and a sweeping corten steel path comes off the cliff to create a more private lookout space.

THE CONCEPT: Building onto the past and into the future.

The piece is meant to emulate inspiration from the past being continuously built upon and reinvented to inspire future student creativity.

THE HOW: Steel from the existing structure will be recycled to form the bases while various other pieces will float along the top seemingly coming together to form singular beams. the second type of steel will be raw steel, so overtime it will corrode eventually matching the look of the recycled steel.

Galvanized steel will be the third type of steel conveying newer ideas represented by the silver but still duller pieces. Finally, the top will be made of small stainless steel components to continuously shine and reflect the inspiration of growth and new generations.

This courtyard is also centralized between architecture and engineering studios, so many students who use the area major in these studies.
