The Weekly will never stop telling stories

M

y first piece of writing was published when I was in second grade.

It was called, “Me A Cookie: If I Were a Cookie.”

It was bad. But when I saw my first byline on a printed piece of paper, telling a story only I could tell, I knew sharing stories was in my bones.

Since I first struck gold as an unassuming 8-year-old, my writing career has taken me on a journey I never would’ve guessed. From my time at UNC-Chapel Hill, to running a newspaper on the Isle of Palms, to first stepping into the Weekly office nearly four years ago, I’ve told stories. It’s all I’ve known.

As a 20-something journalist, the amount of times I’ve answered, “Wait, you work at a newspaper?” is too many to count. People look at me with pity, like I would’ve been smarter if I pursued a career in public relations, teaching, or even blogging.

“Aren’t newspapers a dying breed?” they’d ask.

I didn’t care, because I believe in telling stories.

That’s where the Weekly comes in.

What you find inside the pages of the Weekly, you can’t find anywhere else. We tell stories about the new shopping center coming next to your neighborhood, and how it will affect traffic.

We tell stories about local schools building mobile homes for disadvantaged Native Americans living in Dakota. We tell stories about couples celebrating 75 years of marriage, about the AllAmerican athlete, about the new stores and restaurants coming to Waverly. We tell stories that

young woman with three small children approached a bus stop outside our office the day after Thanksgiving. Her youngest child was missing a shoe.

A man old enough to be the child’s grandfather saw this. He opened an old suitcase and frantically searched through his belongings. He pulled out three pairs of small children’s shoes as if he were a magician.

He explained to the young mom that he collects things other people leave on the highway. He and his wife had endured a rough three years, leaving them homeless.

He was happy to bless the young mom with shoes.

This exchange moved me so much. Moments prior, the old man’s wife asked me if I could spare any money to help them buy food. I gave her an excuse instead.

Watching a couple with virtually nothing help someone else was inspiring, if not guilt-inducing. I reached into my pocket and gave them what little I had.

There are plenty of stories like this out there in our community that need to be told.

shape us as a community and make us realize that, despite our warts, our neck of the woods is a pretty great place to be.

That’s why when my own story took an unexpected turn and an opportunity to try something new fell into my lap, it was one Hannah Chronis of the hardest decisions I’ve made. Do I leave a paper I love and believe in, or do I take a leap of faith with an event planning company?

Last week was my final one at the Weeklies.

As your reading this, Justin Vick, our real estate and development editor, has taken on my role as managing editor.

Serving the community through our paper has been one heck of a ride, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. I miss it already.

My challenge to you, the reader, is this: Keep picking up the Weekly. I left one of the most talented groups of writers and graphic designers in the state. Justin will undoubtedly make the Weekly even better than it already is.

Even though I’m leaving journalism behind (for the time being), telling stories will always be in my nature. Thanks for trusting me for so long with yours. It’s been a pleasure.

Chronis and providing readers with content that will shape how they think about their community – warts and all.

It’s unreasonable to expect government to have all the answers. I’ve been impressed Justin Vick with the business and nonprofit sectors that are stepping up to address the region’s biggest problems.

The new leadership at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce is committed to tackling social issues plaguing the Queen City, such as affordable housing and upward mobility. Figuring this out can only enhance the quality of life, not just for Charlotte, but also surrounding towns and counties.

We should also take pride in SHARE Charlotte raising $7.2 million through its third annual #GivingTuesdayCLT. This two-week fundraising campaign was successful thanks to the combined efforts of 170 nonprofits, 80 businesses and the (see Justin on page 12)

Troop 39 celebrating 75 years of Scouting

MATTHEWS – Edward Joyner attributes the longevity of Boy Scout Troop 39 to the dedication of adults who continue to serve – even years after their children grow out of the program.

The troop dates back to the days following Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor. That was 75 years ago.

Joyner, who serves as Scoutmaster, recently told his troop that they’ve awarded Eagle Awards to 168 young men since 1941 and that only 4 percent of those who enter the program receive the rank.

“While the goal for Scouting is not focused on this achievement, but rather to help develop leadership skills and reinforce quality character traits; we do celebrate this as a significant milestone for each young man and hope it will inspire our younger Scouts to aim high,” Joyner told them.

Matthew Buttafuoco, Reece Devenney, Kenneth Gerrish, Patrick Greene, Andrew Lanier, Jackson McFarlane and Mark Schachner are this year’s class of Eagle Scouts.

Rich Alter, who serves as an advisor to the group, has had two sons become Eagle Scouts through Troop 39. Derek Alter earned his rank in 1999. Brett Alter followed five years later.

They’ve both grown into young men with families of their own. As their children become old enough to join the Boy Scouts, Alter believes his sons will be just as involved to instill citizenship, moral character and leadership in his grandsons.

Boy Scout Troop 39 will celebrate its 75th anniversary 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Matthews United Methodist Church.

The troop invites all past members, as well as the community to drop in. The troop meets 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at the Eagles Nest on the church campus

“These kids go on to become the leaders in our community and nation,” Alter said.

Committee Chairman Joe Culpepper’s son became an Eagle Scout 16 years ago, while Julie Cash is 11 years removed from celebrating her younger son’s achievement, Joyner said.

Others, such as Don Belcher, Scott Cammaryn, Charlie Clark, Derrick Hodge, Dan Latta, Carol Lawrence, Scott McFarlane and Frank Williams, continue to help out.

Joyner credits Scout leaders for investing the amount of time it takes to pitch in with organizing outings, helping youth obtain merit badges and engaging in service projects.

The troop raises money through events like its annual Troop Bar BQ, which dates back to 1975, as well as involvement in Matthews Alive.

Scouts clean up the highway and greenways, as well as collect donations for Loaves and Fishes through its annual Scouting for Food drive.

Then there’s the dozens of Eagle Scout projects over the decades that have enhanced Matthews.

“The rewarding thing is to watch those boys grow from young Scouts all the way to adults” Joyner said. “That transformation is pretty inspiring to watch.”

Matthews Rotary Club plans largest fundraiser MATTHEWS – The Matthews Rotary Club has kicked off planning for its eighth annual spaghetti dinner.

The dinner serves as the group’s largest fundraiser. Last year’s event raised roughly $15,000.

The dinner takes place May 12, 2017, at the Levine Senior Center. Ticket prices are yet to be determined; however the casual-dress dinner will include entertainment from local singer and Rotary Club member Jennifer Siebenaler.

Members will raffle gift baskets and larger-ticket items during the evening.

Rotary Club members will seek donations, gift certificates and prizes for the raffle, as well as corporate sponsorships. Other members will create flyers for the dinner, as well as plan other ways to get the word out.

James thanks district voters CHARLOTTE – Bill James thanked God, as well as his wife, family and voters of District 6 on Monday, Dec. 5, after being sworn in for his 11th term on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners.

“My wife, Julie, she is pretty long-suffering when you’re the wife of someone who has had my profile for 20 years,” James said. “That’s a lot of stuff to deal with.”

James, who represents Matthews and Mint Hill, didn’t provide any fireworks. Those came from Trevor Fuller when it became clear he wasn’t getting reappointed as chairman after three years.

Fuller believes appointing Ella Scarborough as chair was political considering the job he’s done.

Pat Cotham nominated Scarborough. James, Matthew Ridenhour and Jim Puckett supported it.

Puckett will serve as vice chairman.

“In any event, I always enjoy working with all of you,” James said. “I think we can do great things.

We just have to put others first.”

Police recruiting for academy MATTHEWS – The Matthews Police Department will host its annual Citizen Police Academy, starting Jan. 12, 2017.

The nine-week program will provide citizens with up to 19 blocks of instruction, ranging from the criminal justice process to how the agency is structured.

Classes will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the police department.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, live or work in the Matthews area, and pass a background check. The department is accepting the first 18 qualified applicants.

Applications are available at www.matthewsnc. gov. Turn them in by Friday, Dec. 30 to the Matthews Police Department.

Police have unclaimed property MINT HILL – The Mint Hill Police Department has issued a notice regarding found property in its possession.

State law says unclaimed property can be disposed or sold after 30 days from the date of notice.

The department has appliances, backpacks, cell phones/chargers, driver licenses, firearms, GPS, a jewelry box, MP3 player, purses, tools and wallets that have gone unclaimed.

Anyone who believes the items are their property must provide serial number verification and a photo ID. No walk-ins will be allowed.

MATTHEWS – Beltone fitted Ronald Tain with a free hearing aid Nov. 29 after the Indian Trail resident won its Veterans Day Hearing Aid Contest.

The company, located at 600 MatthewsMint Hill Road, encouraged Facebook followers to nominate veterans in need of a hearing aid between Oct. 11 to Nov. 13.

Lorraine Tain said she and her husband couldn’t believe he won. She called it a “blessing.”

Pet hospital bringing 25 jobs MATTHEWS – Piedmont Animal Emergency & Referral Center will open the doors to its 11,000square-foot veterinary hospital Jan. 12, 2017, at 2440 Plantation Center Drive.

The center is expected to bring up to 25 new jobs to the region, including veterinary technicians and receptionists.

Mint Hill to consider drive-thru MINT HILL – EVCO Construction is requesting the town allow Mint Hill Pharmacy to operate with a drive-thru at 7200 Matthews-Mint Hill Road.

The town has required permission since 2002 before companies could add drive-thrus in downtown. The building dates back to 1973 and consisted of a bank with drive-thru until the 1990s, according to a Town of Mint Hill memo.

The public can weigh in on the proposal during a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Mint Hill Town Hall, 4430 Mint Hill Village Lane.

The proposal could then go before the planning board for a recommendation on Dec. 19 and commissioners for a decision on Jan. 12, 2017.

Henderson adds to portfolio CHARLOTTE – Henderson Properties signed 13 new neighborhoods to its community association management portfolio, including Buckingham in Matthews.

Immortality Online: Death, Incapacity and Digital Assets

Do you email, have social media accounts, save photos online, use online banking, use streaming services, have domain names, use online paying services, or do anything else electronically? These online accounts and electronic data are called “digital assets.” Who controls these assets if you become incapacitated, incompetent, or die? If you have digital assets, you should update your Will, trust and durable general power of attorney to allow your Executor, Trustee and/or attorneyin-fact to handle, protect, preserve, or even delete these assets.

If you don’t address digital assets in your estate planning documents, those assets could be in limbo when you become incapacitated, incompetent, or die. What happens to them is determined by federal law, possibly state law, and by the companies who manage and store the assets.

Federal law may not necessarily keep pace with the digital world’s advances.

Federal law disallows any electronic communication services provider from divulging either the contents of a user’s account(s) or login credentials to others in all but a handful of exceptions (e.g., to an individual who has “lawful consent”).

Since June 30, 2016, North Carolina law allows people to use Wills, trusts, and powers of attorney to address their wishes for how these digital assets are managed during incapacity, incompetency or after death, and also to circumvent many of the privacy terms electronic service providers require when setting up an account.

Some basic things that you can do to ensure your digital assets are protected in the future: • Compile a written list of logins and passwords for your digital assets including, but not limited to, email, online banking, social media, etc.

• Create and keep an updated list of all hardware including computers, cell phones, tablets, and external hard drives used to access or store your data. Keep instructions for accessing data.

• Specify how you’d like your data (including social media accounts) to be handled after your death or during your incapacity or incompetency.

• Update or have your Will, trust and durable general power of attorney prepared to enable your fiduciary to handle your digital assets in any circumstance.

• If you own a business, discuss with an attorney what happens to your business’s digital assets upon a sale, transfer, or dissolution of the business.

Obesity rates increase for low-income youth across state National low-income youth obesity rates decrease

North Carolina’s obesity rate among lowincome children has increased, according to new national data, defying a national trend.

Yet, experts say North Carolinians might not have to worry too much, as change is coming.

Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation developed “The State of Obesity.” The report provides a comprehensive look at new data released by the Center for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the study, “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,” regarding individuals enrolled in the federal nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children.

The data demonstrated the obesity rate for low-income children, who are 2 to 4 years old, increased from 13.9 percent in 2010 to 15 percent in 2014.

North Carolina’s rate is the 17th highest across the nation, joining Nebraska, Ohio and West Virginia as states showing significant increases in obesity rates among that population.

The obesity rate for high school students across the state also increased from 12.5 percent in 2013 to 16.4 percent in 2015. The state ranks seventh highest out of 43 states.

The obesity rate for children 10 to 17 years old decreased from 18.6 percent in 2007 to 16.1 percent in 2011.

North Carolina now has the 22nd highest adult obesity rate in the nation, according to “The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America,” released in September.

North Carolina's adult obesity rate is currently 30.1 percent, up from 20.9 percent in 2000 and from 12.3 percent in 1990.

Nationally, the obesity rate among low-

income children has gone down in the past few years.

Thirty-one states and three territories demonstrated significant decreases in obesity rates among young WIC participants.

Eighteen states across the national have obesity rates at or above 15 percent among 2- to 4-year-old WIC participants, according to 2014 data. Twenty-six states had a rate at or above 15 percent in 2010.

“This data is encouraging because kids from lower-income families are especially vulnerable and often face higher risk for obesity,” said Donald Schwarz, vice president of RWJF. “We must continue to track and analyze child obesity and the programs that aim to reduce rates, especially among our nation’s youngest kids. This is critical for informing efforts to address disparities and ensuring that all children – no matter who they are or where they live – have a healthy start from their very first days.”

TFAH President Rich Hamburg said he feels confident the national trend will start to reach Southern states.

Over the past few years, federal programs that help alleviate food insecurity for lowincome families have enlisted stricter nutrition standards.

The WIC program has dedicated more resources in the last couple years to healthy living, Hamburg said, which specifically focuses on improving kids’ health.

Hamburg said there is not “one thing” that caused North Carolina’s increase, but he recognizes that low-income families are at higher risk for health problems.

High-poverty areas often experience food insecurity or live in food deserts, defined as an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.

Education Briefs Queens Grant High School hosts Mistletoe Madness MATTHEWS – The Queens Grant High School Musical Theater Group is hosting its fourth annual Mistletoe Madness 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in the Queens Grant Community School gym, located at 6400 Matthews-Mint Hill Road.

The free event includes a craft fair, featuring local art, home and Christmas décor, jewelry, gift items, food and natural skin care, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, calendars, as well as items from area vendors, such as Pampered Chef, It Works! and Mary Kay. The event also will have a raffle and auction baskets.

Children can buy inexpensive gifts from the Secret Holiday Shop, with items ranging from 25 cents to $12.

Young guitarist pursues music career

MATTHEWS – Johnny Zonstant, or how most people on stage know him, Johnny Z, remembers singing along to Rage Against the Machine when he was 3 years old.

Little did he know, those early years would lead him to a passion for music and the stage.

The Crestdale Middle School seventh-grader started playing guitar when he was about 8 years old. He initially practiced on the family’s old guitar. About a year later, he bought his first electric guitar. “We wanted to make sure this was going to last,� said Johnny’s father, Tom Zonstant.

Johnny appreciated not having everything handed to him. He saw the value in what he purchased and was able to work for it. He began practicing five to six hours daily and became pretty good at it. “I always really liked music (and) I started progressing really quickly when I started playing,�

Johnny said.

Tom Zonstant, who doesn’t have a musical background, said it’s unique to find a child Johnny’s age that would be dedicated to learning the craft.

He began writing his own music and songs, which typically are about love, but Johnny said some people have found different meanings to his songs.

The 13-year-old describes his musical style as heavy metal with an influence of rock and blues.

He also draws inspiration from Robert Cray, Jimmy Hendrix and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. “I think I get a lot of the scales and different ways of phrasing my music from (Darrell),� he said.

The 13-year-old began performing live on his own as Johnny Z, in September, singing his own music and covers. He has played across the state at Amos Southend, Festival in the Park and Greyson Skate Park. He has shows lined him in the next couple months in Hollywood and New York City. “My goal for my life is pretty much is to be a successful person in music. That’s where I’m trying to direct myself (through) touring and be-

coming well known,� he said. “I love music and I think I always will.�

Johnny loves the feeling of being on stage because he’s getting to do what he enjoys, while entertaining an audience.

Breaking into the local music scene took networking and as Johnny puts it, “being a good person.�

Tom Zonstant said. “I think people enjoy it more because they’re so surprised.

But Johnny believes it’s important to stay humble and support local bands, so he often attends local shows.

He’s enjoyed building relationships with other bands and considers the community a family. “You can’t be that guy that he’ll play first and right when he’s done, he leaves,� Johnny said.

The seventh-grader also believes it’s important to appreciate everyone and show thankfulness for their work, such as venue managers and sound operators. His kindness and respect for others has earned him some cool gear.

Johnny met MEDEA, an Italian-based guitar effect pedal company, at the National Association of Music Merchants’ trade show in Nashville. They were so impressed with his playing and gratitude toward the merchandise at the show, the owners decided to endorse Johnny and asked him to make a product demo video for one of their pedals.

He’s also earned the title of “VIP Ambassador� for the clothing company, Cali-Strong, based in California.

But you won’t find the Zonstant family as stage parents. Tom Zonstant feels it’s important to let Johnny explore his talents and passions on his own, but not to push him.

Johnny is most appreciative that his parents have given him the opportunity to pursue that passion. “(My dad) says pretty much every day, ‘Do something you want to do and that you like doing because if you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ That’s a part of my inspiration and me wanting to have that as a career,� he said.

Hamburg points to a lack of education and income as big factors toward someone’s risk for obesity and disease.

“What you also see is a correlation of being at risk with other health problems,” including higher rates of hypertension and diabetes and lower rates of physical activity, he added.

But Hamburg doesn’t feel discouraged that four states showed an increased obesity rate, as he believes the progress elsewhere will trickle into other states.

However, the state could see improvement with its standards regarding federal nutrition program Child and Adult Food Care Program. The most recent requirements for CACFP will take effect Oct. 1, 2017.

Hamburg feels optimistic about these programs and believes they’ll foster a pathway for more positive trends.

He estimates 8 million people are being help through WIC, including 2 million pregnant or post-partum women, 2 million infants and 4 million children under 5 years old.

Region stands to benefit from #GivingTuesdayCLT Two-week campaign generates $7.2 million for nonprofits

CHARLOTTE – A city still healing from divisive protests over the September shooting of an African-American man by a police officer is rallying behind a two-week campaign that raised $7.2 million for charity.

SHARE Charlotte announced the results of its #GivingTuesdayCLT on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Unknown Brewing Company with cheers from area charities. The hashtag was used to promote the third annual campaign spanning Nov. 15 to 29.

“We have had some challenges this year in our city,” Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts said.

“One of the reasons I know we're going to come through and be stronger, better, healthier and happier – the reason I know that is what we've seen in the last two weeks – that people care. There’s a compassion. There’s a hospitality. There’s giving here.”

Matthews charities Bright Blessings and Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts are among the 170 nonprofits across Mecklenburg County that promoted the initiative and stand to benefit.

Several other charities that serve the entire county received funding, including YMCA of Greater Charlotte, YWCA Central Carolinas, Susan G. Komen Charlotte, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region and Second Harvest Food

“I’ve never been more proud to call Charlotte my home,” said retired NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, whose Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation also participated in the campaign.

Gordon remembers when Kelly Brooks approached him several years ago with the idea for SHARE Charlotte. He recalls her passion for charity and her amazing vision, which is starting to take fruition.

“Giving back to the local community is so important,” Gordon said. “It brings people together.

It saves lives. It impacts lives in so many ways.”

Others attending the unveiling of the check included Wells Fargo Kristi Thomas, Google Fiber Jess George and Jamie McDonald, of the national Giving Tuesday team.

Charlotte raised more money than any other city in the history of the global #GivingTuesday initiative, McDonald said, noting the movement is only five years old.

Brooks emphasized that giving is not about just two weeks of the year. She encourages the community to maintain the same level of excitement to help others each day of the year.

“We all needed something good to rally around and the fact that so many wonderful nonprofits benefitted is the true meaning of it all,” Brooks said.

Senior captain Lydia Miller was one of the few bright spots for Queens Grant this season. She excelled in singles, going a perfect 13-0 on her way to her third conference title before losing in the regional round. Miller, an all-conference player, also earned team MVP honors.

Covenant Day junior Madison Wall sparked the Lions with her stellar play. She ended the season with an overall record of 20-7 in singles and doubles competition. Wall received all-conference recognition for her efforts.

Aleena Oakley gave Independence quite a boost with her performance this season as a junior. She had a singles record of 8-4. Oakley, who emerged as one of the better players in the area this season, was named to the all-conference team.

Sophomore Ivy Mathis, a co-captain, was the Bulldogs’ No. 1 player and is developing into one of the area’s top young talents. She completed her second season at the high school level with an impressive singles record of 9-3 to earn allconference honors for the second team. She was named team MVP.

They beat Myers Park, 52-47, Tuesday, Dec. 6, to improve to 7-1 (1-0 Southwestern 4A).

Rocky River appears to have what it takes to push Butler and Independence for the conference’s top spot. It visits Garinger Friday, Dec. 9.

Coach Oscar Walker has one of the area’s top backcourts. He has a dynamic trio of point guards in freshman Jaden Springer, sophomore Raquan Brown and junior Mikey Maddox.

This is a playoff-caliber team capable of making a deep postseason run.

For Rocky River, it’s just a matter of staying healthy and continuing to make those necessary strides throughout the season. The playoffs are a long ways off, but the ceiling for the Ravens appears to be high and they are just beginning to tap into their potential.

Sports Shorts Time Warner Cable to televise Indy at Butler game The Butler and Independence boys’ basketball rivalry will be on a statewide platform when the Patriots make the short trip to Matthews for the first of two regular season meetings.

Time Warner Cable will televise the game, which has been moved from Thursday, Jan. 12, to Friday, Jan. 13.

Both teams are the leading contenders for the Southwestern 4A Conference championship and might have what it takes to contend for a state title.

Butler remains undefeated with a perfect 7-0 (1-0 Southwestern 4A) start to the season, while Independence also is off to a solid 5-2 (1-0 Southwestern 4A) start.

Butler coach Myron Lowery has an array of talent at his disposal. Senior wing Zane Rankin (Lander University signee) is his primary weapon and scoring option (19.8 ppg), while junior big man Gerrale Gates has been a force in the paint (13.5 ppg and 10.2 rpg). Senior point guard Tarique Stowe is excelling as the team’s floor leader (11.2 ppg, 4.7 apg and 2.5 spg). Senior guard Omega Stitt also has provided a solid lift.

Hamilton, a sure double-night-in and night-out, is averaging 13 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 3.3 bpg. Senior point guard Chea Johnson also has improved significantly. The veteran ball-handler is averaging 13.5 ppg. Senior wing Matt Statile has been another consistent contributor thus far, too.

The Bulldogs and Patriots split last season, but Butler secured the regular season Southwestern 4A Conference crown when it won the second meeting. The Bulldogs also went on to win the conference tournament..

However, we’re in a new season. Both coaches have challenged their teams with difficult nonconference schedules. On paper, Butler might have an edge at this point, but records are thrown out the window when these teams clash.

Ravens’ hoops soaring early Rocky River boys’ basketball team is out to prove it’s better than last season’s abysmal 10-16 finish, and the Ravens are well on their way to erasing that frustration with their current success.

Lady Ravens, Bulldogs challenge Myers Park; Indy girls building The Southwestern 4A Conference has belonged to Myers Park in girls’ basketball since 2012 when coach Barbara Nelson took the helm. However, it appears the gap is beginning to narrow between the Mustangs (2-2, 1-0 Southwestern 4A) and the rest of the league.

Butler (5-2, 1-0 Southwestern 4A) and Rocky River (4-4, 0-1 Southwestern 4A) are the most likely candidates that are capable of challenging or dethroning Myers Park from its spot atop the conference. However, the Ravens got off to the wrong foot in that regard with a 63-61 loss to the Mustangs to start league play. (see Sport Shorts on page 17)

Butler title hopes dashed, offseason looms with questions

The sting of bitter defeat was all too real for Butler, which finished the season with a 12-2 (6-0 Southwestern 4A) record following a 50-49, overtime loss to Vance in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4AA state playoffs Friday, Dec. 2.

Butler seemed to be well on its way to accomplishing that goal after it dethroned its nemesis and defending state champion Mallard Creek the week before, but the Bulldogs finally met their match.

Vance senior quarterback Kingsley Ifedi ran in the game-winning two-point conversion to put his team over the top and break Butler’s hearts in the extra period.

It wasn’t supposed to end this way for the Bulldogs, who appeared to be a team of destiny after everything they had overcome.

They endured the disappointment of three consecutive playoff losses to Mallard Creek, a frustrating loss to the Mavericks in their second game of the season and the indefinite suspension of head coach Brian Hales following his arrest Nov. 5.

However, the postseason’s nature of singlegame elimination is a cruel reality to those who fall short. Couple that with sudden pain that comes in a season-ending defeat, and it makes for a crushing combination.

That feeling is similar to when your stomach drops after you hear bad news. Trust me. I know. That’s exactly how I felt after my last high school football game when my team lost to our archrival 10 years ago.

They will get another crack at the Mustangs when they visit Myers Park Jan. 20. Butler faces Myers Park Dec. 13 and Jan. 27. The Bulldogs and Ravens play Dec. 16 and Jan. 31. Those games will be critical in the race for the Southwestern 4A Conference regular season championship. However, Myers Park is in the driver’s seat with its win over Rocky River, but the season is still young.

Fortunately for Butler and Rocky River, it has proven talent and experience in critical spots to weather the storm and stay in the mix. Those most notable players are Butler junior combo guard Rinnah Green (14.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 2.6 spg) and Rocky River senior wing Ariana Nance (21.2 ppg).

but that’s the reality for 15, 16, 17 and 18year-olds and it hurts. It’s the moment they worked for all offseason, and it vanished like a vapor. Those players busted their butts during excruciating workouts and practices with the hope of reaching the pinnacle of their sport, while other kids their age were playing “World of Warcraft.” However, football similar to life doesn’t always go the way folks want it to, which is an important lesson to learn.

Independence’s girls’ basketball team (1-7, 1-0 Southwestern 4A) picked up its first win, a critical one at that, when it opened up league play Tuesday, Dec. 6, with a 44-41, victory over East Meck. The Patriots overcame a six-point deficit in the third quarter to pick up the win.

It is the program’s first conference win since 2013 and only its second victory in two years, making it quite a significant accomplishment for the Patriots.

Keep in mind, this rebuilding process is going to take time for Independence, but the win over East Meck is a step in the right direction and something to build on.

Independence coach Lauren Galvani’s talent reserve is limited, but she is making do with what she has and is getting the most out of her players.

Unfortunately for Butler, especially its senior class, that lesson couldn’t have come at a worse time.

It marked the final time guys like quarterback Davis Cheek, twins and offensive linemen Devin and Kedron Smith, offensive lineman Connor Reed, all-purpose back/ cornerback Dirk Cureton, wide receiver Kusegi Cureton, defensive tackle Maurice McClain, defensive end Tristan Quick, defensive end Nejuan Worthy, defensive end/ outside linebacker Jaylen Lesane, middle linebacker Christian Dixon, linebacker Anthony McGill, safety Aramis Algood, defensive back Brandon Brown and others will don the black and gray.

Cheek left it all on the field in one of his greatest performances, completing 23-27 passes for 445 yards and five touchdowns to one interception. He also rushed five times for 45 yards and a touchdown.

While the end was disappointing for Butler, the Bulldogs still have much to be proud of after securing their second consecutive conference title, going multiple rounds deep into the playoffs and recording double-digit wins.

Independence also has dates with Garinger and Charlotte Country Day before it enters the new year, giving the Patriots a couple of other beatable opponents along with the Pirates.

Other questions are who will fill the voids at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacking corps and in the secondary? Graduation will hurt Butler with a mass exodus.

At the same time, the Bulldogs return a strong nucleus of talent in offensive lineman Cam Taylor, running back Nijere Peoples, all-purpose back Keyon Lesane, wide receiver D.J. Little, tight end/linebacker/defensive back T.J. Cusick and linebacker Kaleb Simmons.
