The Lighthouse summer camp kids review Sardis Park Students from The Lighthouse summer camp at Matthews United Methodist Church visited Sardis Park this summer. Children in third through fifth grade were responsible for writing the following review of the park from their perspective.

MATTHEWS – On Tuesday, June 21, The Lighthouse at Matthews United Methodist Church visited Sardis Park at 1 p.m. Once we got there, the park was empty so we had it all to ourselves. That’s good, because if the park was crowded, we would not have been able to experience all of the fun things they have there.

The park was very spacious and full of all different types of animals and wildlife. The teepee in the park was tucked back in the woods, making it feel more realistic. When you climbed to the top of the rock wall, you could see the entire park. We did think that it was eerie that there was an industrial building located right next to the park.

The spacious park was shaded with many great choices of seating. The road was so tucked back that it was almost like it didn’t exist. To us, it was like a secret treasure! Unfortunately, there was no water fountain and summer can get very hot so we advise you to bring a water bottle.

The park is safe for young children because it is tucked back, far away from the main road. On a busy day, you might not be able to park because there are approximately seven parking spaces. It would be smarter to car pool on a busy day if you are planning to go with a group.

There was a paved trail available, but we did not go down that way. Be aware that this park is relatively small (minus the woods) so they have a port-a-john and the soap was gone, so be sure to bring your own.

If you like slides, this is the place to come because there are multiple slides. You also might want to be careful on the spinning equipment.

If you want to have a picnic, they have numerous picnic tables conveniently placed in the shade. Be aware that this park has a few rotten chairs that could break and lead to injuries. We would suggest that you not sit on the weather damaged benches so that you don’t get a splinter.

MINT HILL – St. Luke Catholic Church will ask Mint Hill commissioners later this month to rezone 31 acres of vacant residential property at 9738 Fairview Road for its future campus.

The church has outgrown its 11 acres at 13700 Lawyers Road, holding as many as five masses over the weekends to accommodate large crowds. “We don’t have the capacity to grow at the current location,� according to Chuck White, chairman of the building and planning committee.

The church was designed for 625 families, but the congregation is approaching 1,400 families, White said.

St. Luke Catholic Church first held mass nearly 30 years ago in a movie theater before moving to the Mint Hill Festival shopping center. Since leaving the storefront for its own property in 1994, St. Luke Catholic has added administrative and education wings. Space has tightened in recent years.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte bought the 31 acres off Fairview Road in 2011. The campus is about a quarter mile from Exit 47 on I-485 and three miles from the existing church. Â The church held a building campaign to raise $985,000 through June 30, 2015. The effort generated $1.6 million, which will help prepare the site for construction, including road improvements and parking.

The church hopes to start construction in three years.

The sketch plan shows four buildings: a

sanctuary (27,544 square feet), multipurpose building (38,559 square feet), administrative building (3,968 square feet) and rectory (1,747 square feet).

The sanctuary will be designed to seat 1,200 people, allowing for less cramped conditions for mass.

The multipurpose room will include classrooms, a social hall, kitchen, library and offices.

The sanctuary, multipurpose and administrative buildings will provide frontage along Fairview Road. Off to the side will be recreational space for youth sports and large-scale events, like the fall festival.

Plans show two soccer fields, but White said the space will consist of multipurpose fields for various sports. A shelter also is shown on the plan.

The sketch plan details two driveways off Fairview Road. The church may be required to make traffic improvements to Fairview Road to mitigate traffic. The driveways will lead into enough parking to accommodate 550 vehicles.

Toward the back of the property lies a Stations of the Cross display built by a Boy Scouts troop. The Stations of the Cross follows the path of Christ from the Garden of Gethsemane to the crucifixion.

The church will leave a significant portion of trees toward the back of the property in place, White said. The town requires 15 percent of property in its natural state.

The project will head for public hearing at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 at town hall, located at 4430 Mint Hill Village Lane. The planning board will vet the plan Aug. 22. Town commissioners discuss it Sept. 8.

Matthews PD makes arrest, advises residents to lock cars MATTHEWS – On Thursday, July 21, Matthews Police Department officers responded to the English Knoll Drive area after receiving a report of suspicious persons looking into vehicles.

Upon arrival, officers located Austin Gilliard, 23, who was taken into custody and charged with several felony counts including first-degree burglary and breaking and entering of a motor vehicle stemming from eight different locations.

A K-9 officer attempted to locate a second suspect, who has not yet been located or identified.

Officers are encouraging the public to be aware of what’s located inside their vehicles when it’s parked overnight. All vehicle doors should be locked. Nothing of value should remain in sight.

Mint Hill to host ‘Afternoon in the Park’ on Sunday, Aug. 28 MINT HILL – The town of Mint Hill and the town’s Arts and Science Council will hold a “Sunday Afternoon in the Park” on Aug. 28 from 1 to 6 p.m. The festival will take place at Mint Hill Park, located at 5233 Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road and includes music, artist displays and traditional festival food. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Matthews collects school supplies for students in need MATTHEWS – The town of Matthews is inviting the public to help students in need receive school supplies for the upcoming school year through its “Matthews Gives Back to School” initiative. The town’s goal is to fill at least 200 backpacks with supplies for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

This effort is similar to the town’s “Matthews Gives Back” mission from last year where canned goods, toys and clothing items were collected and distributed to less fortunate families for Christmas.

The following items can be donated: notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pens and pencils, erasers, colored pencils, magic markers and folk out binders.

Donations can be dropped off through Aug. 15 at the following locations: • Matthews Town Hall, 232 Matthews Station St. (both in the town hall lobby and library lobby); • Matthews Police Headquarters, 1201 Crews Road; • Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, 100 McDowell St.; • Matthews Fire and EMS Station 1, 235 S. Trade St.; • Matthews Fire and EMS Station 2, 1201 Crews Road; and • Matthews Public Works, 1600 Tank Town Road.

Once items are sorted, they will be distributed at a community cookout on Aug. 18, a Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Matthews Sportsplex.

Business Bureau announces midyear ‘Dirty Half Dozen’ list CHARLOTTE – The Better Business Bureau announced its annual Dirty Half Dozen list of

the top six area businesses with the most unanswered and unresolved complaints in the first half of 2016.

In the first half of 2016, consumers filed 7,518 complaints with BBB against businesses in the Southern Piedmont area of North and South Carolina, a one percent increase over last year. Three of the top six businesses are repeat offenders.

• Gastonia Landscaping (BBB grade F): Complainants allege they paid deposits to the Gastonia-based landscaping service for jobs that were delayed longer than expected or they paid for work that was started, but not finished.

Complainants also allege the company will not honor warranty agreements.

• AFSCO (BBB grade F): Complainants allege that this Fort Mill-based collections agency called them about debts they did not owe and threatened to have them arrested if they did not pay the debt immediately.

• Auto City, LLC – (BBB grade F): Complainants allege that they bought a car from this Charlotte-based used car dealer and then had problems with getting the car’s title or registration and tags. Other complainants allege the car they purchased had undisclosed damage.

• Flat Rate Movers (BBB grade F): Complainants allege that this Fort Mill-based moving service damaged their furniture, damaged their homes, and/or would not deliver their furnishings unless additional money was paid.

Norelli wins lawyer award CHARLOTTE – The North Carolina Bar Association recently awarded Nancy Black Norelli with its 2016 Citizen Lawyer Award for her public service.

Norelli, a former district and emergency court judge, founded Norelli Law in Charlotte.

“I never considered that community service was optional,” said the Mint Hill native. “I undertake things that are important to me, where I can make contribution.”

Norelli, a breast cancer survivor, learned swing with a professional dancer and performed at the Charlotte Dancing with the Stars competition, raising $46,000 for Carolina Breast Friends.

Her pro bono work ranges from obtaining taxexempt status for the Good Friends charity to getting a woman out of a predatory loan.

She serves as vice president of the Legal Services of Southern Piedmont board of directors.

One of the most legally complex issues for divorcing couples is how their marital assets will be divided. In North Carolina, the division of marital property following a separation of the spouses is referred to as “Equitable Distribution.” Generally speaking, “marital property” is defined as all assets and debts that you and your spouse, either independently or together, acquired after the date of marriage and prior to the date of separation. “Separate property” is defined as assets or debts that one spouse acquired prior to the marriage or during the course of the marriage under very specific circumstances. Marital property is subject to Equitable Distribution; separate property is not.

NC law instructs the Court to divide marital property equally unless such division is not equitable, in which case, the Court may consider the following factors: each spouse’s income, property and liabilities; any support obligation from a prior marriage; the marriage duration; each spouse’s age and physical and mental health; the need of a parent with custody of a child to occupy a jointly owned home; a spouse’s contributions as a wage earner or homemaker; the tax consequences to each spouse; any acts of either spouse to maintain or waste marital property after the date of separation; any

separate property owned by either spouse; the difficulty of evaluating business interests; and any direct contribution to an increase in value of a spouse’s separate property.

The long list of factors demonstrates that Equitable Distribution isn’t always as simple as giving each spouse fifty percent (50%) of the assets and/or debts. In many cases, it may be more “equitable” for one spouse to be distributed more than fifty (50%) of either the assets or debts. It’s almost always within a divorcing couple’s best interest to have control over the division of their marital property and come to an agreement.

Otherwise, a judge will determine distribution based on the testimony in court. No matter how resolved, once an agreement is reached, you should leave the drafting of the Agreement to a licensed attorney with experience in Equitable Distribution. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education (BOE) got to work this week, planning how it will carry out the first phase of its upcoming student assignment plan.

In a four-hour work session Aug. 2, the BOE started defining potential models and courses of action CMS could take, based on information provided by CMS staff and its consultant, Alves Educational Consultants Group.

CMS board accelerates superintendent search

Residents could find out who will lead Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 2017, as the school board bumped up its timeline to name a finalist.

The CMS Board of Education (BOE) approved an updated superintendent search timeline at its July 26 meeting in a 7-1 vote, with Paul Bailey in opposition and Tom Tate absent. The timeline states the new superintendent would be announced at the Jan. 10, 2017 BOE meeting, provided CMS counsel has vetted the finalist in time.

The previous timeline scheduled an announcement for Feb. 22, but BOE members voiced concerns about not having enough time to focus on potential General Assembly legislation and its bond presentation to Mecklenburg County commissioners in early 2017, according to District 1 BOE member Rhonda Lennon.

The new timeline schedules the board interview and select a finalist on Dec. 14, and have counsel work with the finalist’s contract over the

winter break. The accelerated deadline allows for the new candidate to have a lengthier transition period Bailey was not pleased with the new timeline because he said it wasn’t posted until the previous evening, and didn’t initially lay out a specific date to announce the finalist.

At-large member Ericka Ellis Stewart made an amendment to add the December and January dates.

District 5 BOE member Eric Davis felt it wasn’t right to vote on the timeline with Tate absent. Lennon countered that she didn’t expect the board to wait for her when she was absent because of a breast cancer surgery and urged the board to continue its work.

Both Thelma Byers-Bailey and Ruby Jones felt the new timeline helped move the superintendent search along, something their constituents have requested. “When we first entertained the motion to extend (Superintendent Ann Clark’s) contract, I thought that we would start the search now,â€? Byers-Bailey said. â€œâ€ŚWhen we talked to the search firm (McPherson Jacobson), the

schedule was not a search now, it was a search later. I’m pleased this is coming forward, so the search can carry on.�

McPherson told the BOE in May that the search should begin in the fall because that’s when candidates are looking for a job, not sooner. The new timeline sets a start date for advertising the position on Aug. 5 and the position to close Sept. 30.

Jones said her constituents have questioned whether the board has abandoned the search and whether it was still continuing. “To keep moving the ball back and forth says that we are not steadfast in what we are appointed to do,� she said.

Stakeholder group meetings to obtain feedback of qualities the public wants to see in their new leader are slated for Sept 6 to 16.

The board will hear a comprehensive report on that feedback on Oct. 19, which was pinned down by an amendment by Davis.

Education Briefs CMS seeks bus drivers As the largest public school transportation district in the state, and one of the 10 largest in the nation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is looking to hire bus drivers for the coming school year.

Bus drivers will work full time for nine months, with an hourly range of $11.25 to $12.14.

Applicants must: pass the NC school bus driver written and road test; have a valid driver’s license for at least six months; at least six months of professional work experience; must be at least 18 years old; have a “good� driving record and work references; and have dependable transportation to and from work, among other requirements.

CMS is looking for new bus drivers for the upcoming school year.

CMS board approves policy changes

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education recently approved multiple policy changes at its July 26 meeting. Board member Tom Tate was absent and did not vote.

We’re here to break down what those changes mean for your students.

Policy: JJJ, “Extracurricular Activity Eligibility”

What it means: Students, particularly athletes, have flexibility to enroll in virtual classes and duel enrollment at local colleges without losing eligibility for extracurricular activities. The previous rule said a student had to attend 85 percent of instructional days from the previous semester.

Students are still required to attend at least one-half of the instructional day to practice, play in games or participate in out-of-season skill development.

What it means: The amendment doesn’t make substantive changes to the policy, but brings it into compliance with the Every Students Succeeds Acts (ESSA), which Congress and the President signed off on in December 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act and reauthorizing the Elementary Secondary Education Act. The policy talks about making family engagement a priority in Title I schools.

CMS recently announced its plans for Title I schools, which included the engagement piece, but BOE member Ruby Jones pointed out

the policy wasn’t much different than previous plans.

Policy: GBA, "Equal Opportunity," and JBA, "Harassment of Students by Employees"

What it means: CMS wanted to revise its nondiscrimination clauses to both policies. The notice is required by the Office for Civil Rights and arises out of a Title IX Compliance Review and Resolution Agreement.

The clause namely prohibits discrimination of “gender” and “sex,” as well as other criteria.

CMS announced another policy in June that allows students to choose the restroom and locker room they identify with and will be reflected in yearbooks and graduation ceremonies.

However, two community members urged CMS to reverse its transgender student policies at the July 26 meeting, stating transgenderism is a “mental disorder” and the bathroom policy could cause self-esteem issues.

What is could mean: Students in Pre-K to second grade can’t be suspended, and instead elementary schools will look at other ways to discipline these students, so teachers can retain a safe classroom. Communication with parents and additional mental health options have been discussed.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools wants to hear from community members regarding the district’s student assignment plan – specifically pertaining to Phase I, which includes magnet school options and requirements.

CMS staff and the Board of Education have already begun looking into expanding magnet school seats in existing programs, but want to hear from the community about what new programs parents are interested in.

The community is encouraged to attend engagement events from Aug. 8 to 18, based on their high school feeder pattern. However, if a parent cannot attend their high school’s session, they can attend others.

Superintendent Ann Clark said the sessions were broken into high school feeder patterns, so staff can gauge feedback from each geographic area.

Magnet school parents are asked to attend their home school’s engagement session, but some magnet forums will still continue as needed.

Sessions will run from 6:30 p.m. to about 8 p.m., including an open session in which community leaders and CMS staff will explain what Phase I entails and how community feedback will affect the process. The event also will include small

group sessions, in which facilitators guide groups to discuss preferences of lottery priorities and magnet programs, as well as the plan’s process.

If someone cannot attend any community engagement sessions, Clark said residents can follow the process on the CMS website and look at videos of board work sessions.

“We want to make sure our community can follow the process,” she added. “We really want them to be engaged in that process.”

My daughter’s wedding Part 1: The Sword Ceremony

My daughter’s wedding was held in a castle. Gone were the tuxedos.

The groomsmen wore cloaks similar to what a squire would wear in the days of Rev. Tony Marciano King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable. My son-in-law wanted a sword ceremony.

The internet only showed sword ceremonies similar to what is used for military weddings. The swords are held high in the air as the bride and groom walk under it. This is not what he wanted. He wanted me to present to him a sword, symbolic of our trust to take care of our daughter.

When we arrived at the rehearsal, Will asked to see the sword ceremony. I told him I wrote it in my head and he would hear it for the first time during the wedding. I then asked, “Do you trust me?�

The sword was at least 36 inches long and kept in a leather case.

Let me take you through the ceremony: After walking my daughter down the aisle, the minister started the ceremony by asking, “Who gives this woman in marriage?� I answered the question, and turned to my wife who was holding the sword. She gave it to me and I walked with it between the bride and groom and turned to face the congregation. The groom was not facing me. I looked at Will and told him to kneel. I withdrew the sword from its sheath and tapped him on each shoulder and said, “Will – I tap you on the left shoulder because when I walked down the aisle with my daughter, it was symbolic that my wife and I believe you are the man to marry our daughter. I tap you on the right shoulder because as I give you my daughter’s right hand, I believe you will protect her. Please stand.�

That was as much as he was aware of – the rest was a surprise to him.

I continued by saying, “Will, Maria comes from a long line of men who married well. Her great grandfather, Joseph Marciano, married well, as did her great grandfather, Raphael Meola. My father married well. I wished you had met Nana before she got ill. I married very well. It is my wife who taught me what it means to

marry very well. Your soon to be brotherin-law Anthony also married very well. I know the heart of my daughter. You are about to marry very well. You will be able to say with the wisest man who ever walked the planet, Solomon – ‘a good woman who can find, she is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her and she does him good and not harm all the days of his life.’ “Will – today on your wedding day, Maria will tell you she loves you. Like most men, you are good for 30 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Maria is different. She is a woman. She will awake each day and wonder, ‘If he had to choose me again, would he choose me over every other woman on this planet?’ You are about to make vows to our daughter. Right now I need you to make a pledge to my wife and me. If you accept this sword, you pledge to us that you will, with the best of your ability, let my daughter know that if you had to choose her again, you would choose her over every other woman on this planet.�

Will had a speech prepared. He completely forgot it and spoke from his heart.

It was moving.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Butler’s Erin Bader was integral to her team’s success during her final season with the Bulldogs. The outfielder and utility player maintained a .389 batting average, made 28 hits, recorded 15 RBI and 22 runs. She made the all-conference team.

Kendall Anderson buoyed Independence with her versatility as a utility player during her sophomore year. She finished the season with a .457 batting average and 15 RBI. She was named to the all-conference team.

Olivia Pauldin Independence

Paige Jacky sparked Butler with her stellar play from her spots at first base and in the outfield as a junior. She had a .423 batting average, 30 hits, 12 doubles, 15 RBI and a homerun. Jacky earned all-conference honors.

Independence’s Olivia Pauldin was an impact player during her junior year from her first and third base positions and with her bat. Pauldin was on fire at the plate with a .449 batting average, 18 RBI and 10 doubles to secure a spot on the allconference team.

Madison Thomas Butler

Cailyn Duncan Rocky River

Butler sophomore pitcher/outfielder Madison Thomas was effective on the mound and at the plate. She finished with a 2.97 ERA and a .412 batting average. Thomas was named to the allconference team.

Cailyn Duncan was one of Rocky River’s few bright spots as a junior. The catcher, who also was a team captain, shredded opposing pitchers for a .567 batting average, 17 hits, eight RBI, three doubles, a triple and a homerun. She earned allconference recognition.

Emma Swenson Butler Emma Swenson wrapped up a successful career at Butler with an impressive senior year. The shortstop, who signed with Wingate, recorded a .566 batting average, 43 hits, eight doubles, a triple, eight homeruns and 24 RBI to make the allconference team.

Jenna McCauley was one of Queens Grant’s team captains as a freshman. The do-it-all player saw action at pitcher, catcher and first base. She had one of the hottest bats with a .583 batting average, 21 hits and 24 RBI to make the all-district, all-conference and all-state teams.

Sadie Evans gave Covenant Day a major boost with her play as freshman phenom. She completed her rookie campaign with a .436 batting average, .492 on base percentage and .764 slugging percentage to earn all-conference honors.
