Movies 10 to close permanently on Aug. 23 by Josh Whitener josh@matthewsminthillweekly.com

MATTHEWS – A movie theater that has been a staple in the Matthews community for two decades will close its doors permanently next weekend. Cinemark Movies 10 recently announced its official last day will be Sunday, Aug. 23. The theater, at 9508 Northeast Court, offers discounted ticket prices on “sub-run” movies – films that have left their initial, fullprice runs at other theaters. This month marks the 20th anniversary of the theater, which opened in August 1995. Movies 10 is currently showing films including “San Andreas,” “Tomorrowland,” “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Furious 7” and Dreamworks’ “Home,” for $3 per ticket. The theater will add “Ted 2,” “Max” and “The Vatican Tapes” on Friday. Cinemark is the third largest movie theater circuit in the U.S., with 334 theaters and 4,491 screens in 41 states, according to its website. The company also has 169 theaters and 1,229 screens in 14 Latin American countries. Cinemark has three additional theaters in North Carolina – Cinemark Asheboro in Asheboro, Cinemark Brassfield

Coming next week Pick up next week’s edition of Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly for an update on the Charlotte Area Transit System’s attempts to increase transit options for Matthews. CATS was in town Aug. 11 asking residents where they would like to see buses, express buses, street cars and light rail.

Work begins on superstreet Cinema Ten in Greensboro and Cinemark Tinseltown USA in Salisbury. Movies 10 management declined to comment, and representatives from Cinemark’s corporate office did not return phone calls by Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly’s press deadline.
