Students help Beds for Kids with move
CHARLOTTE – Ardrey Kell Marine Corps JROTC cadets performed community service recently at Beds for Kids. Students provided assistance in getting the furniture moved from the nonprofit's old location to a new larger warehouse. The cadets packed and unloaded four truckloads as well as assisted in putting the storage bins together for better accountability. They were asked to return to help the following week at the new warehouse. Atrium Health, Charlotte Fire Department and Factory Church in Concord are among organizations that have assisted Beds for Kids in recent days. Beds for Kids is holding a grand opening for its new warehouse and office space from 9 a.m. to noon at 4200 Barringer Drive. On the web: https://bedsforkids.org/

Mosquito with West Nile virus found in Mecklenburg County CHARLOTTE – The State Laboratory of Public Health identified West Nile virus in a mosquito collected in central Mecklenburg County on July 14. No residents have been identified with neuroinvasive West Nile virus in 2021. Mosquitoes are responsible for circulating West Nile virus within the wild bird population and can transmit the virus to humans through a single bite. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

the majority of people who become infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms to a mild, flu-like illness. However, about 20% of people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. In about 1% of infections, West Nile virus can cause a severe illness affecting the central nervous system, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of
the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). There are no West Nile vaccines licensed for use in humans and no medications to cure West Nile disease once a person is infected by a mosquito. Individuals should take steps to minimize their exposure to mosquitoes during outside activities, especially during morning and evening hours. Gibbie Harris, the county's see VIRUS, Page 5A
