CycleBar riding into Waverly

Charlotte’s second CycleBar studio will roll into Waverly on June 19, thanks to owner Lisa Palmer.

The indoor cycling center opened a studio in Midtown in 2016, but Palmer wanted to expand to south Charlotte due to the positive response from the city. “(CycleBar) is a different experience,” Palmer said. “Charlotte didn’t have anything like this.”

Palmer and her husband, Marc, have always been passionate about fitness. They owned a personal training studio in St. Louis before moving to Charlotte. While searching for something to occupy her time two years ago, she discovered the CycleBar franchise.

“With my passion for cycling, this is perfect,” she said.

The CycleBar studios have become a family affair. The couple’s two 16-year-old sons work in the studio.

When it comes to owning the studio, Palmer does it all, from running the front desk to connecting with community partners across the area.

studio opens. Until then, she will be at the Waverly location, overseeing the free classes taking place June 8 to 18 before the June 19 grand opening.

Advertising stadium seating in a concert-like atmosphere, Palmer described a CycleBar class as “50 minutes of fun.”

“When you get off the bike, you don’t feel like you had a workout,” she said.

Palmer hopes this new studio will bring traffic into Waverly. The up-and-coming development has no other fitness option,

The studio appeals to all ages and fitness levels.

CycleBar offers a sense of community with gatherings and events. The Charlotte studio raises money for the community’s charities through the “more than a workout” experience. “(That’s) exactly what it is,” Palmer said.

“It’s an experience.”

Business leader running for District 6 seat CHARLOTTE – Tariq Scott Bokhari plans to run for Kenny Smith’s District 6 seat on the Charlotte City Council.

Smith is running for mayor, while Bokhari will kick off his campaign June 22 at J.Sam’s in South Park.

Bokhari begins the race with more than $20,000 in funding and endorsements from prominent conservative leaders, including Pat McCrory, Robert Pittenger, Andy Dulin, Scott Stone and Matthews Ridenhour.

Bokhari is a leader in technology, strategy, risk and innovation for financial institutions, having worked for Wachovia, Wells Fargo, GE and FIS Global. He serves as CEO of financial technology firm Aggressant.

He previously ran as a Republican for the city council’s District 1 in 2007 and at-large in 2009.

“After focusing on my family and career since my last run for office, I was drawn back into local politics to make sure that District 6 continues to have proven leadership and a consistent voice from the business community on Charlotte City Council,” Bokhari said.

“I want to carry on the traditions of strong constituent service, conservative principles and real-time communication established

Don’t agree? Then you are poo!

N

oah Lieberman, of Charlotte, was 14 votes shy last year of becoming the Democratic challenger for Bill Brawley’s seat in the N.C. House of Representatives.

I think it’s only a matter of time before Lieberman gets elected to some sort of office, so I was surprised to see such a bold tweet from his @NoahFromNC Twitter handle Justin Vick on June 4.

“F--- you too, Donald,” peeped the tweet.

“How dare you politicize this tragedy to push an agenda that will get more people killed, you worthless sack of s---.”

Yep, he dropped the F-bomb and S-bomb while retweeting President Donald Trump. He didn’t use symbols to cover up the curse words.

Lieberman reacted to a Trump tweet following the London terror attacks. Trump tweeted, “Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now? That’s because they used knives and a truck!”

I’m not going to wag my finger at Trump or Lieberman for what they chose to tweet to their followers. After all, I view Twitter as a giant brain. This brain has the capacity to take its time to thoughtfully compose a rational response to a topic, but it can also blurt out reactionary ideas in the heat of the moment.

Tweets don’t define who we are, but bundle

enough of them and you have an idea of what we like to talk about.

A month from now, the Weeklies will report on who officially decides to run for office for upwards of a dozen municipalities. I hope the ugliness of national and state politics doesn’t trickle down into local races.

I hope that disagreements in what direction our towns need to go doesn’t lead to people being painted as good or evil. In theory, people run for office because they want their communities to thrive.

They volunteer their time, skills and ideas to saving their town money or improving a lingering problem. Rather than telling someone to f--- off, invite them to listen to why you view things differently. Let’s stop calling each other poo (or clowns).

Sports editor Ben Doster is on vacation this week. When he returns, he’ll roll out a series of Super Teams, highlighting the remarkable feats of our spring high school student-athletes.

In July, he’ll shift gears toward high school football. Our annual high school football preview is scheduled for Aug. 19. Also, be on the lookout for coverage of the 99th annual PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Golf fever hits the south Charlotte region on Aug. 7 to 13.

Animal hospital helps rescue find adoptive families WAXHAW – The South Charlotte Dog Rescue was the beneficiary of the Passionate Paws Animal Hospital’s Pups N' Pints adoption event Sunday, June 4, in downtown Waxhaw.

The rescue is going through the 15 adoption applications filled out at the event and notifying families that meet the requirements.

Golf course pays homage to late county manager CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg County has named the Renaissance Golf Course after the late Harry Jones.

Jones served for county manager for 12 years. He died in February after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bob Morgan, CEO of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, played golf with Jones. He remembers chatting with Jones about race relations and the challenges of creating unity in between strokes.

“Not only did he love the game but he promoted it and used it to bring people of diverse backgrounds together for quality time in the outdoors,” Morgan said. “I can attest

that the striking of a golf ball for Harry was a secondary pursuit. He was much more interested in the fellowship generated amongst his partners.”

Tri! Ballantyne offers bike, swim and run challenge CHARLOTTE – The eighth annual Tri! Ballantyne enters an exciting comeback year with the return of the USA Triathlon-sanctioned outdoor multisport event.

Three triathlons, including preschool and kids events, are packed into one Saturday with a mission to positively affect the lives of under-resourced children in the community.

Movers for Moms drive to help mothers in shelters CHARLOTTE – Two Men And A Truck Charlotte recently hosted its Movers for Moms col-

lection drive to provide critical gifts to women staying in shelters.

The moving company worked with local businesses to collect essential and comfort items. More than 10,000 donations were collected and delivered to Safe Alliance and Florence Crittenton Services.

This spring marked the 10th anniversary of Movers for Moms. Last year was the program’s most successful year to-date, with more than 285,000 items collected for donation to hundreds of shelters. This year’s goal was to collect 350,000 items for moms in need.

Mentoring organization changes name, website CHARLOTTE – To reflect its growing geographic reach, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte has changed its name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas.

It also launched a new website, www. bbbscentralcarolinas.org.

“It sounds like a small change, but it reflects something very big,” CEO Donna Dunlap said. “We now serve more than 1,500 children across Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and York counties. When we moved into York County in the fall of 2016, we decided we needed a name that better represented who we are.”

The organization is celebrating its 45th year in the region.

Pool inspections add to county health department woes Head of department announces resignation

Mecklenburg County’s health department is under more scrutiny after leaders learned some public swimming pools closed for violations were reopened the following season before inspections.

County commissioners discussed Tuesday, June 6, ways to improve the health department’s handling of pool inspections.

That same day, County Manager Dena Diorio announced that Dr. Marcus Plescia had resigned as public health director, effective Aug. 4.

“I want to thank Dr. Plescia for his leadership and for championing Public Health’s community wellness initiatives,” Diorio said in a statement. “However, Dr. Plescia realizes that new leadership is needed to improve our processes and produce better outcomes for the residents who depend on Public Health every day.”

Plescia’s resignation comes after the health department failed to notify dozens of women about abnormal Pap smear results and a Charlotte Observer story about county health employees unhappy with leadership.

Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour had supported the health department through

the recent firestorms, but he said the culmination of issues astounded him.

“When the public eye is closely watching the county, especially the health department, you would think we would be dotting every I and crossing every T, making sure there would be nothing viewed as improper or deficient,” Ridenhour said. “That was what was so frustrating and outrageous.”

The county could change the way it inspects pools by only allowing permits after inspections.

Lisa Corbitt, a program manager with the Environmental Health Division, said the county would have to evaluate the impact of such a move on staffing, other programs and customer service.

“Many pools expect to open on Memorial Day weekend,” Corbitt said. “With all prepermit inspections, we may not be able to meet that demand.”

The county inspects 1,095 seasonal pools and 292 annual pools a year, according to Assistant Health Director Cardra Burns.

Seasonal pools are inspected once a year, while annual pools are checked twice.

The state requires counties inspect seasonal pools within 60 days of issuing a permit. The county began offering pre-permit inspections in 2012 to meet the demand.

“We have a process in place currently that we believe is timely, fair and effective,” Corbitt said. “It takes into account the balance between our business community, expectation and our staff capacity while also meeting the rules.”

Ridenhour said this was an instance in which Mecklenburg County needed to exceed state law. He’d be happy to invest in more personnel or better technology within the health department to ensure it operated efficiently.

About Marcus Plescia Dr. Marcus Plescia arrived in Mecklenburg County in February 2014, after serving in roles with the N.C. Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He is credited with transitioning the health department into an entity separate from Carolinas HealthCare System, as well as promoting wellness.

Wellness initiatives include a farmers market on Beatties Ford Road and smoking ban on government property.

Now I’m getting lectures from my son-in-law

My external compliance and internal rebellion don’t always line up.

No, I’m not talking about my personal and public life. I am committed to being consistent and operating with integrity.

Externally, I come across as this very compliant person who follows rules and doesn’t rock the boat.

Internally, I want to color outside the lines. I’m a non-conformist. There is this voice that says, (as Frank Sinatra sang) “I did it my way.”

When I was 10 years old, my mother said to me, “You better work for yourself because you’ll never be able to work for someone else.” At 10, mom figured me out. I am grateful for the work I do, which gives me a lot of freedom to be me while being held accountable to a board of directors.

When my son, Ed, was younger, he questioned why I didn’t wear gloves while working on projects. Where were my safety goggles? I ignored him. Today, I can still hear his voice. I wear gloves and safety goggles. Just don’t tell him.

A few months ago, my son-in-law of less than 12 months (note the time frame)

called me out on something I didn’t want to do. The dynamics of my family is that my 90-plusyear-old mother who has Alzheimer’s lives with me. Rev. Tony It takes two home health aides, two daughters and one daughter-inlaw to provide 24/7 care for her. My sister took a job outside DC leaving us with one less person to care for her. While I knew she needed the job, I was annoyed she didn’t sit down with us to discuss its effect on our schedule. She was leaving “dodge” and we were left alone to figure it out.

My son-in-law asked me if I was going to talk to her. I said, “No.” That’s when I got the speech. He took five years’ worth of lectures from me and rolled it into one lecture from him. He reminded me how I said we should always do the right thing, even if it is not well-received. I said, “No.” He argued with me. I repeated, “No.” He was relentless. I changed the subject.

A few days later, I had to pick my sister up from the repair shop where she dropped off her car. I discussed with her that I was happy she landed this job and didn’t expect her to stay behind to take care of Mom. I did expect her to sit down with all of us and discuss the impact it had on our schedules.

She commented on it. Feeling I was on a roll, I brought to her attention that I felt she was treating me the way Dad treated me (we had discussed Dad’s style many times). She acknowledged my comments.

I’d like to tell you we held hands, frolicked through the fields and chased butterflies. We didn’t. I said what I had to say.

Her response was cool and aloof.

It reminded me of the phrase, “I’m responsible to you; I’m not responsible for you.” I was my responsibility to bring to my sister’s attention the tension in our relationship. I was to share with her my concerns. But I was not responsible for her reaction or lack thereof. I wasn’t responsible if she apologized or not. It wasn’t my responsibility if she made amends or not. I was responsible to her, not for her.

You’ll be happy to know I am getting better at taking suggestions. I just don’t like getting lectures from my kids.

I’ll be back in a few weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Providence Day’s Beatty learned work ethic from father

Athletics have been a significant part of Nancy Beatty’s life since she was a young girl, but the Providence Day athletics director has been shaped by something greater than sports.

Beatty grew up on a farm in a small country town in Ohio. She is the youngest of the late Laurence and Charlotte Beatty’s four children. Her father, who was known by most as L.L., farmed 1,000 acres. She grew up with cows, sheep, pigs, goats and ponies.

Beatty’s dad was a hard-working man.

He never took a vacation. He never used an alarm clock and would wake up the same time every morning before daylight, cook breakfast and get after the many tasks at hand no matter how late he was up the night before.

Her father worked from morning to night. Beatty would help him as much as he let her when it came to unloading hay, feeding animals and occasionally running the tractor.

Beatty was the only one of the children in her family who has been in athletics for an entire career.

She played softball, basketball and volleyball. Beatty put together a makeshift rim

hoop to shoot baskets on. It included a ring from a barrel nailed to the side of the barn.

Beatty said she was there by herself and had to find something to do.

Beatty played college basketball and softball and club volleyball at Kent State University, where earned a degree in science. She became a biology and earth science teacher.

She coached at St. Vincent-St. Mary School in Akron, Ohio, where basketball star LeBron James started to get national at-

tention. Beatty, who was there from 1991 to 1998, arrived at the school fresh out of college, working as a science teacher, basketball coach, volleyball coach and assistant athletics director.

Beatty led St. Vincent-St. Mary School’s girls’ basketball team in 1995. She lost her mother in 1996 and her father in 1997.

She left St. Vincent-St. Mary School to try her hand at the collegiate coaching ranks at the University of Akron as an assistant coach

with its women’s basketball program. However, Beatty had enough after four years, and decided to take her talents south.

She went to Pinewood Prep in Summerville, S.C. She took the school’s headcoaching for girls’ basketball and guided the Panthers to four state championships on the hardwood.

Beatty, who was head of the P.E. department, also coached softball during part of her 11-year tenure with the school and served as athletics director her final three years in the Palmetto State before taking the same role minus the coaching responsibilities at Providence Day four years ago.

She stepped in as an assistant coach for the Chargers’ middle school softball team out of necessity this spring.

There were many enticing components that drew Beatty to Providence Day, including the location and school environment.

“My goal was always to help students grow,” Beatty said. “If that’s being able to plant the seed now when they’re in high school and it can grow now or if it grows later, that’s still a win situation. My experiences with student-athletes, I feel like I can mentor other coaches to be a better coach or a better person or have a different insight to motivating students.”

Girls make sweet gesture Bake sale supports Pancakes for a Purpose

Boy Scout rewarded for saving lives

CHARLOTTE – When Charlie Fox heard someone shout “Look at them! Help them!” last Memorial Day at Garden City Beach, he was ready to put what he had learned through his seven years as a Boy Scout to use.

Four swimmers had become caught in a riptide, stranded. Charlie jumped to the rescue with the help of three other rising seniors.

“I instructed a few boys to go get a rope and I found an inflatable turtle that people were using,” Charlie said. “There were four of us. We went in neck deep.”

From there, Charlie led two strong swimmers to the kids in danger. At 6-foot-9, Charlie stood solid while one child was put on the floaty and the other three were connected to the rope.

“Me and another big kid, not necessarily the best swimmers, pulled them back to safety,” he said.

Without Charlie’s leadership and quick thinking, lives could’ve been lost.

Charlie called his mother immediately after the experience.

“He was a little overwhelmed by the magnitude of the situation,” Nanine recalled.

“Just thinking that one split moment can change your life. In one split moment, you can be caught in a riptide. It’s very frightening.”

Charlie received the BSA National Court of Honor Medal of Merit on May 22 for his actions that day on Garden City Beach.

He credits his ability to quickly respond to a dangerous situation to Boy Scouts.

“Scouts really did help me because we also took a beach trip and learned all about rip currents and how to escape safely.”

But rip current safety isn’t the only thing that Scouts has taught Charlie.

“Sometimes I don’t know my full potential, but I’ve learned that I can do anything,” he said. “I know the exact things to do and because of this I have more confidence and know that I can be a leader.”

In addition to his commitment with the Boy Scouts, he continued his involvement with his youth group at St. John’s Episcopal Church, while pitching for the Charlotte Catholic baseball team and playing on the basketball team.

He will attend Sewanee, The University of the South in the fall.

CHARLOTTE – The seventh annual Pancakes for a Purpose raised almost $12,000 in March to help combat pancreatic cancer, a disease that has influenced organizer Tammi Brady’s family.

Brady’s husband, Dave Anstadt, died in 2002, less than two months after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Nine years later, Brady organized a pancake breakfast fundraiser in Anstadt’s honor.

The event has seen more success every year, raising $44,000 to date.

Two months after the most recent fundraiser, the family received a little extra help in their fight. Two girls greeted Brady at her door May 29, handing her $69 in cash.

The girls, Shaye Foley and Ashley Sofarelli, held a bake sale at the Ballantyne Country Club to help raise money for Pancakes for a Purpose.

As sixth-graders at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School, Foley and Sofarelli are required to perform two hours of community service each semester. Raya Levin, Shaye’s longtime friend, joined them.

The National Cancer Institute estimates more than 53,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer by the end of this year and reports the survival rate after five years at only 8.2 percent.

Brady’s family believes that fundraisers like theirs are helping.

“It’s raising awareness, especially of how quickly moving this specific kind of cancer is,” Brady said. “People who are shocked, even if they’re not personally affected, are happy to help.”

Emily added, “Events like this help people understand that they’re not alone. It differs per person, but everyone goes through these things. Knowing that helps ease the pain.”
