CHARLOTTE – Dr. Ophelia GarmonBrown has been declared Charlotte’s “Real Life Woman Superhero.”

Inspired by the film, “Wonder Woman,” Studio Movie Grill and Warner Bros. Pictures conducted a campaign from April 14 to May 14 to find a real Wonder Woman in each of SMG’s 11 markets around the country.

Her professional achievements, selflessness and fearlessness in the face of adversity are what make Garmon-Brown a real-life super hero.

When she was a teenager, GarmonBrown, her mother and her older sister moved from inner city Detroit to North Carolina, where her grandparents lived. Her father passed away when she was 2 years old.

“I decided when I was 4 years old that I wanted to be a doctor and save other dads,” Garmon-Brown said. “My mother told us we could do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens us. I’m also lucky to have been blessed in the sciences.”

She graduated from North Carolina Central University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She went to medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill and completed her residency at Carolinas Medical Center.

Garmon-Brown has been a family practice physician in Charlotte for more than 37 years. She directs a free clinic and serves as senior vice president of community wellness and education at Novant Health.

She provides free and low-cost physicals to students so they can continue playing sports. She also has helped pay college tuition for students who otherwise could not afford it.

Not only is she involved in community health, but Garmon-Brown is also involved in community faith. She earned a master’s degree in divinity and is an ordained Baptist preacher.

Garmon-Brown is part of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force, whose goal is to reduce inequality of opportunity in the Charlotte area and allow anyone and everyone to have upward momentum.

Garmon-Brown is a mother of two and a grandmother of three.

Even in the wake of career and community successes, she has faced personal adversity.

In 2012, she was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma, a rare kind of soft tissue cancer, in her right arm. She had the tumor removed, but doctors discovered another instance in 2014 and removed part of her lung. In November of last year, she received brain surgery and a nephrectomy to remove more cancer. Now she is undergoing chemotherapy to fight lesions in her chest.

“I’m a blessed person. I don’t fear cancer.

I have faith. Whether I live or die, I’m all right.” Garmon-Brown said in March at the YWCA’s 2017 We Believe Luncheon.

On May 31, Garmon-Brown and the 10 other honorees assembled at SMG’s corporate headquarters in Dallas for a special redcarpet screening of the new “Wonder Woman” movie. They received SMG’s Opening Hearts and Minds Award and a $1,000 donation to each honoree’s charity of choice.

Garmon-Brown selected her church’s food pantry to receive the donation. St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church is located in the Druid Hills community.

Garmon-Brown said she is excited to be associated with a superhero like Wonder Woman, whose goal it is to help other people.

Cyclists preview 24 Hours of Booty

CHARLOTTE – Since its inception 16 years ago, 24 Hours of Booty has been a tour-de-force takeover of Myers Park, with hundreds of riders participating in the cancer awareness fundraising event.

As the July 28 event draws near, the 24 Foundation began gearing up for it by participating in a bicycle ride alongside representatives from Richard Petty Motorsports.

As they completed a 2.5-mile ride from Bicycle Sport on Selwyn Avenue, cyclists arrived at Levine Children's Hospital to meet up with NASCAR driver Aric Almirola.

Together, they were guests on a radio show recorded live from Seacrest Studios in the lobby of Levine Children's Hospital. On the show, broadcast to Levine patients and children's hospitals across the Almirola country, participants were asked questions about how cancer and ill-

Plump editor interviews black bear

I

courageously lathered my body in beans and greens before heading deep into the suburbs of Waxhaw for a once in a lifetime interview with the mythic black Justin Vick bear as seen on grainy surveillance footage.

This would be the interview that catapults me from the Arby’s menu to the Ruth’s Chris Steak House menu. This reporter’s mouth was watering with ambition and probably early onset type 2 diabetes.

What follows are excerpts from my encounter with the bear at an undisclosed subdivision.

Why are you going in people’s yards? Why do we have to do this interview in someone’s yard? Can’t we go to a park?

Education Briefs School board approves student-assignment plan CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools approved Wednesday, May 24, the second phase of a student-assignment plan for 2018-19.

The plan changes magnet programs at 10 schools, changes assignment boundaries at 58 schools, pairs two sets of elementary schools to improve socioeconomic diversity and building utilization, and creates homeboundaries at five schools that are magnets.

“As our community changes and grows, our public schools need to change and grow, too,” Superintendent Ann Clark said.

Highlights include adding new partialmagnet programs across the district at all educational levels. Among them: Greenway Park Elementary, Crestdale Middle, Northeast Middle and Quail Hollow Middle.

The plan combines attendance areas at Billingsville and Cotswold, and Sedgefield and Dilworth elementary schools.

Charlotte Prep alumna to give 2017 graduation speech CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Latin graduate Michelle Charles will give the commencement address at Charlotte Preparatory School’s graduation Wednesday, June 7.

Charlotte Preparatory School serves about 350 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade. Charles attended through 2013.

She’ll attend Villanova University on a fouryear scholarship.

“Charlotte Prep gave me the chance to grow and succeed not only in academics but also sports, fine arts and as a person,” Charles said. “I left Charlotte Prep a confident young woman well prepared for high school.”

Skin cancer project nets $5,000

More than 180 volunteers, mostly Target employees, joined the REAL School Gardens organization and faculty at Idlewild Elementary on May 19 to build an outdoor classroom in a single day.

Sophia Vona, Sylvia Vitner and Tanvi Prakash each won a $5,000 savings bond in addition to earning their spot in the national finals, to be held June 25-30 in Leesburg, Va. The U.S. Army’s eCYBERMISSION is a science, technology, engineering and math-

ematics initiative that challenges students to develop solutions to challenges.

“For months, these girls met in my room during breaks, recess and after-school hours,” science teacher Kathy Zuck said, noting their efforts prompted peers to start wearing more sunscreen.

Charlotte Latin staffer earns community leadership award CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Latin School Director of Diversity and Inclusion Sonja Taylor received the 2016 Director's Community Leadership Award.

Taylor was among 58 individuals and organizations honored at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., for building stronger, safer and more cohesive communities. She was recognized for promoting social justice and advancing STEM access and learning in communities across South Carolina.

"Sonja joined Charlotte Latin's faculty and staff in April, and already her impact is felt by our school community and in our great city,” Headmaster Arch McIntosh Jr. said.

Charlotte Catholic honors retiring choral teacher CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Catholic High School’s Fine Arts Festival combined choral performances and a visual art showcase with a touching tribute to retiring teacher Dottie Tippett.

Tippett, who announced her retirement after 37 years of teaching at Charlotte Catholic, was surprised at the end of the May 15 show by colleagues and alumni in the audience.

Country Day students Skype with Ligia Fonseca CHARLOTTE – The Middle School Model United Nations Club at Charlotte Country Day School had the opportunity to Skype with the First Lady of Cape Verde Ligia Fonseca on May 10.

Students learned about her favorite experiences as First Lady and priorities for social change. They discussed her experiences with diplomacy and public speaking.

ACE awards scholarships CHARLOTTE – ACE Mentor Program of Greater Charlotte presented scholarships to seniors at Myers Park and Ardrey Kell high schools at its annual spring banquet.

Madison Horgan, of Myers Park, and Brian Bishop and Andrew Sarber, of Ardrey Kell, received a combined $6,000 in scholarships.

The after-school program allows high school students to explore careers in architecture, construction and engineering.

Duke Energy gives $2M boost CHARLOTTE – The Duke Energy Foundation is committing $2 million to UNC Charlotte’s Exponential Campaign to support the Charlotte Engineering Early College and the Women in Computing Initiative.

Duke Energy has given more than $20 million to UNCC. Its foundation provides more than $30 million annually in charitable gifts, including a focus on science, technology, engineering and math fields for students.

“Duke Energy is building a smarter energy future for the state, and that requires a diverse group of engineers and computer scientists, like the students supported by these programs, to help us lead the way,” said Lloyd Yates, Duke Energy’s executive vice president of customer and delivery operations.

Rhoads led people to God CHARLOTTE – Ross Rhoads, senior pastor of Calvary Church from 1973 to 1995, died Wednesday, May 24.

Rhoads, 84, led the church at a time of rapid growth. The church’s website notes how membership was at 400 people in 1974. By 1989, Calvary broke ground on its 5,000-seat worship center along N.C. 51.

Memoir chronicles healing in pursuit of helping homeless CHARLOTTE – Kathy Izard writes about her

personal struggle with faith, forgiveness and fulfillment in her memoir “The Hundred Story Home: A Journey of Homelessness, Hope and Healing.”

Izard was a graphic designer when an unlikely meeting with a formerly homeless bestselling author changed her life.

While her service at the community soup kitchen might feed her soul, she realized it would never solve the bigger needs of the homeless population. She was called upon to build housing for Charlotte’s homeless.

In advocating for the development of Moore Place, Izard confronted her lifelong struggle to address the abandonment, anger and sadness brought on by her mother’s lengthy mental illness and absences.

“I wrote this book because I wanted to encourage readers to think about what might be calling to them,” Izard said. “I think each of us has something imprinted on our hearts that we are uniquely meant to do. In telling my story, I invite you to consider rewriting your own.”

Bailey charges to hardwood heights

Janelle Bailey has done everything a high school basketball player can accomplish.

The 6-foot-3 Providence Day post player, who signed with North Carolina, averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds during her senior season to lead the Chargers to their eighth consecutive state championship.

Bailey eclipsed the 2,000-point and 1,000-rebound barriers for her career.

She also led USA Basketball’s 17 and Under team to the bronze medal last summer.

Bailey was already a good basketball player when she arrived at Providence Day as a freshman, but she had plenty of room to improve.

After four years under Josh Springer and his coaching staff, Bailey has grown in the mental aspect of the game. Bailey has become a dynamic passer with a knack for finding open teammates when the defense collapses on her. She isn’t afraid to put the ball on the floor and drive past defenders to the basket.

She thought Hatchell was kidding, but it turned out the Hall of Fame coach was serious.

“The Carolina family, that’s one thing that drew me in,” Bailey said.

“I’ve been there so many times that every time I go, I feel like that was the atmosphere I want to play in. Coach Hatchell, she’s always been a good person to talk to. When I get on the phone (with her) it’s not always about basketball.”

Bailey, who is interested in public health, plans to pursue a degree in the medical field.

Bailey encourages young girls to pursue their aspirations. She wants them to know that worthwhile pursuits aren’t easy.

“All the things I accomplished weren’t easy for me to do,” Bailey said.

“It wasn’t easy for me to be a McDonald’s All-American, win four state titles, be on the USA team and things like that. You have to get through some hard times to finally get the things you dreamed about.”

Charity gala honors NASCAR driver Johnson, raises $890,000 CONCORD – The 37th annual Speedway Children’s Charities Gala raised a record $890,000 Wednesday, May 25, at the RitzCarlton, while honoring seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.

The black-tie dinner and charity auction were designed to honor the south Charlotte resident, who has amassed 82 career NASCAR Cup Series wins.

“For more than 17 years, Jimmie Johnson has achieved amazing success on the track as a talented driver, but he has also been a wonderful spokesperson for the sport of NASCAR and a generous supporter of Speedway Children’s Charities,” said Marcus Smith, vice chairman of Speedway Children’s Charities.

The Charlotte chapter granted almost $815,000 last year to 93 charities in the region.

12 qualify for golf tourney KANNAPOLIS – Twelve Charlotte golfers qualified to play in the 57th North Carolina Amateur Championship on Thursday, May 25, at The Club at Irish Creek.

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Country Day beat Charlotte Latin, 15-6, May 20 to win its fifth consecutive N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Tabor was stellar in goal, denying several of Latin’s shot attempts.

Senior attackman Carter Williams scored a game-high four goals, while senior midfielder Jaclyn Perkins added three goals. Junior midfielders Charlotte Pedlow and Thea Reddin recorded two goals apiece. Sadie Charles Calame, Taylor Riley, Virginia Poole and Lilly Whitman each scored a goal.

Country Day entered the season with only five returning starters. Coach Kristy Boyles challenged her team with a difficult schedule.

They also overcame a slew of physical and mental hurdles.

“It was a very gratifying win for sure,” Boyles said. “They knew from the outset they had a lot to prove. We had all the talented pieces in place. It was just a matter of bringing together the heart and the grit.”

Knights' baseball falls to Trojans in state title series RALEIGH – Charlotte Christian’s baseball team was swept by Wesleyan in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A best of three state championship series.

The Knights fell short 7-6 in the deciding second game that went for 12 innings May 20 at Ravenscroft.

Charlotte Christian (30-5) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit when it exploded in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. However, the Knights couldn’t stay on top for long.

“It’s not what we came here for, but that can’t take away the season these kids had,” coach Greg Simmons said. “They did a great job. They worked hard. They stuck to the pro-

cess and we just didn’t make enough plays.

We made a few errors we usually don’t make that hurt us. That’s what happens against a good team. I was proud of my guys battling back. They never gave up, so I was proud of them.”

Country Day boys’ tennis earns perfect record, state title CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Country Day’s boys’ tennis team cruised past Providence Day, 5-0, to win the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship May 20 at UNC Charlotte.

This is the Buccaneers’ first state title since 2011, but what made it even sweeter was they finished with a perfect 19-0 record.

“It was amazing,” Country Day coach Calvin Davis said. “First of all, you never know how it’s going to go, then the season started rolling and it was one great match after the next.”

Senior Maylin van Cleeff, the team’s No. 2 singles player, was Country Day’s unquestioned leader. Junior Luke McClelland, the team’s No. 1 singles player, was dominant throughout the season. Junior Vaed Khurjekar, senior Jackson Motchar, sophomore Tarun Prakash and freshman Bennett Turner also played meaningful roles.

“We had a good mix of youth and experience,” Myers Park coach Ed Flynn said. “Flynn and Chris as seniors did a good job of leading us. I think as the season progressed we started to gain a little confidence with the success we had in the regular season.”

Charlotte Latin’s reign continues in girls’ soccer MATTHEWS – It’s safe to say Charlotte Latin’s girls’ soccer program is a dynasty.

The Hawks beat Providence Day, 1-0, in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship May 19 at Covenant Day to win its third consecutive title and eighth in the last 10 years.

“We go into the season expecting to win the state championship,” Latin coach Lee Horton said. “That’s just the way things are in our program right now.”

Junior Claudia Dickey proved to be the difference-maker in helping Latin defend its crown.

Horton moved Dickey from goalkeeper to holding mid for the final third of the season.

Dickey scored the championship-winning goal on a header with 18 minutes left in regulation.

Providence Day wins fifth straight track & field title ROCK HILL – Providence Day has the top track & field program for boys and girls at the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A level. That has been the case for half a decade now.

The Chargers won their fifth consecutive state title on the boys and girls’ side May 13 at Winthrop University.

The boys edged runner-up Christ School 101-94, while the girls beat second-place finisher Cary Academy 141.5-101.

Boys’ coach Ben Hovis had two winners: freshman Adam Habas (800 meters) and junior Noah Dolhare (1,600 and 3,200 meters).

Girls’ coach Carol Lawrence had a few of her own: Sophomore Olivia Hee (100 meters and long jump), senior Gracie Whelan (200 and 400 meters), and senior Emerson Porter (100- and 300-meter hurdles and pole vault) Hee, Jessica Jant, Camryn Taylor and Whelan won the 4x100-meter relay, while Porter, Jant, Taylor and Whelan won the 4x200-meter relay.
