Myers Park student gains national recognition

CHARLOTTE – Myers Park High School junior Tatiana Aguilar not only made a splash locally, but also across the state.

Tatiana was announced as The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs’ North Carolina Youth of the Year, after earning recognition as The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte’s 2016-17 Youth of the Year.

The junior went up against students from across the state to earn a $10,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the Southeast regional competition June 13 to 15 in Atlanta.

“Tatiana is a bright light in our community,” said Marty Clary, executive director of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte. “This recognition is well deserved, as Tatiana represents what the Boys & Girls Clubs are all about. She excels in the classroom, is a natural-born leader and always leaves others better than she found them.”

At the Boys & Girls Club in Charlotte, she serves as a junior staff member and teaches a Latin dance class for younger members.

She also tutored younger members and planned a health fair for members and their families. When presented with the local award, the junior said she felt like “it takes a village” to make change.

“I have truly witnessed the impact of the club in my life,”

Tatiana said. “I only have God, my family and this organization to thank for challenging me and shaping me into the confident person that I was not three years ago. I was so honored to be selected as the state Youth of the Year and represent Charlotte and the Marsh Road Club. The Boys and Girls Club has allowed me to do the impossible. I never would've imagined being where I am today.”

Tatiana plans to pursue a career in neurobiology.

9 most vulnerable incumbents this election cycle

T

hree months from now, campaign signs will begin to accumulate in lawns like poop in a rabbit’s cage. Some candidates may feel more inclined than others Justin Vick to fill the cage with little chocolate balls. Here’s nine incumbents from southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties that I think are most vulnerable heading into the November election.

Jennifer Roberts – Blowback from HB2 and protests over the discrimination of AfricanAmericans have prompted two of her colleagues on the Charlotte City Council (Vi Lyles and Kenny Smith), as well as a sitting state senator (Joel Ford), to run for Charlotte mayor.

Gordon Daniels – Nearly every item Daniels tried to put on the Indian Trail Town Council agenda in recent months was met by accusations from his colleagues of grandstanding for votes.

Gary Savoie – Savoie tends to vote with Gordon Daniels on the Indian Trail Town Council, including the ouster of the town manager in February. Some have accused them of missing meetings to delay votes.

James Warner – The next three spots are reserved for Waxhaw commissioners. Voters may not like how commissioners waited so long to dismiss the divisive “HAW” branding tagline, which some said conjured humiliating Southern

stereotypes.

John Hunt – Waxhaw residents may want to make a statement by not allowing the mayor pro tem another term. One action that stirred the pot was trading a portion of 30-plus acres once earmarked for a park to a developer.

Paul Fitzgerald – The Waxhaw commissioner’s leadership in restoring the Duncan McDonald House may not be enough to counter concerns that Waxhaw is allowing too much high-density residential and cookie-cutter commercial development.

Ruby Jones – At times, Jones seems lost during Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education meetings. She hasn’t been battle-tested in an election either. She was appointed to fill her District 3 seat.

Larry Whitley – Whitley won the sixth and final seat on the Matthews Board of Commissioners by just 97 votes in 2015. On occasion, Whitley has expressed frustration during meetings, most notably when the board resisted the freshman commissioner’s attempts to push a road project up the priority list.

Villagers – Some races in Union County only require 100 votes to win. Union County is growing so fast that prospective candidates could potentially corral newcomers to oust familiar faces.

News Briefs Country Day plants for the future CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Country Day School celebrated its 75th anniversary by the senior class planting 75 oak trees in South View, a new park in west Charlotte.

“The school is pleased to partner with TreesCharlotte, an organization that works to address the city’s tree loss from development, protect its forests and native species and create new green space,” said Shannon Drosky, director of communications.

Later this spring, TreesCharlotte also will provide every Country Day student with an oak seedling to be planted in and around the city, amounting to almost 1,600 trees.

Students will help prepare the seedlings for planting and learn about how trees benefit our ecosystem.

Grayson Park eligible for $20K grant through voting CHARLOTTE – The National Recreation and Park Association is collaborating with The Walt Disney Company to revitalize parks across the U.S. for the third year, including one in Charlotte.

Nonprofit hopes recycled books erode summer slide

CHARLOTTE – Promising Pages wants to prevent summer slide one book and student at a time.

The nonprofit launched its “Books on Break� initiative to ensure young people have access to age-appropriate books over the summer. “Imagine that you go home (for summer break) and you don’t get to read a bedtime story because there are no bedtime stories,� said Kristina Cruise, founder and executive director of Promising Pages. “In fact, this is the reality Murray for many children in our community that might not touch a single book until they come back for school in the fall.�

The nonprofit considers the initiative the largest book upcycling effort in Charlotte, with Mitchell an aim to get high-interest, selfselected books directly into the hands of thousands of children who otherwise might not have access to reading materials over the summer.

Promising Pages seeks to help students in “book deserts,� areas where books are hard to obtain, particularly without access to transportation, such as the western and central parts of the county.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, 48 percent of low-income CMS fourth-graders in spring 2015 reported having less than 25 books of any kind at home.

Promising Pages completed a pilot with nonprofit Read Charlotte in December 2016, in which students in nine CMS schools picked out three books to take home at a free “book fairs.�

Albemarle Road Elementary School secondgrader Jakeem Mitchell received some of his favorite books from the pilot program.

“(Reading) shows us new stuff and information and it always teaches us a new lesson,� Jakeem said. “It’s important to keep reading so I can grow my knowledge.�

His teacher, Claire Murry, said the pilot benefitted students who wouldn’t normally have books at home. She said the books not only increased students’ skills, but also their interest in reading.

The second-grade teacher feels the earlier children take an interest in reading, the better, which

will set them up for success later on.

Promising Pages wants to encourage students to go from “having� to read to “wanting to read,� said Kelly Cates, program director.

The nonprofits chose this initiative after the organizations found Harvard research that said if a child has access to at least five books over the summer that will diminish “summer slide,� a phenomenon in which students, particularly those from low-income families, lose achievement gains they’ve made during the previous school year over the summer. “A child works so hard throughout the year and doesn’t have access to book because his parents are fighting for food and shelter and those really basic essentials. Children’s books just don’t make the cut,� Cruise said. “Now, they come back behind and it’s cumulative.�

Books on Break hopes to collect 80,000 books in any condition from the community, as well as talk to their children about how some kids don’t have books.

Promising Pages has hit about 25 percent of its goal, but has a long while to go, Cruise added.

Volunteers also are needed to clean, process, sort and pack books to go to the schools on May 5.

If the nonprofit hits its goals, about 13 or 14 Title I schools and 10,000 students will receive books, with each child selecting five books to take home.

Clark wants more student support in $1.5B budget

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark wants to see more student support services in next school year’s budget, which comes with a $26.9-million increase from the county.

Clark presented a $1.5-billion budget proposal, with about 60 percent of funding coming from the state and many parts of the budget dependent on state actions.

Ann Clark She said the budget request and increase for the county would knock out four critical needs in the district.

“Next year is the final year of our strategic plan,” she said. “We are staying the course set by the plan and focusing on the six goals we set for the district. We are seeing steady improvement in student achievement and district performance – and my budget recommendation seeks to continue that. We want to educate every child well and our budget request will help us to achieve that goal.”

County Manager Dena Diorio forecasts county revenue will grow by $35 million for the coming year.

Increasing operational costs

CMS expects to add 753 more students next fall to this year’s enrollment of 147,157, as well as open five new schools, including a computer science/coding full magnet elementary school that Rocky River-zoned families can take advantage of, the UNCC Early Educators program, a full magnet Montessori high school and moving Marie G. Davis high school magnet program to Hawthorne Academy to establish a countywide K-8 IB magnet school at Marie G. Davis.

Approximately $5.4 million of the increased request from the county will cover this need, including enrollment growth, new space and operations costs.

CMS also has to prepare if the state retains its mandate for smaller K-3 classes, which could force the district to reallocate money from other programs to hire more teachers.

Gov. Roy Cooper announced last month he wants to see teacher and administrative salaries increase, which means CMS anticipates a pay increase from the state. This means CMS will Roy Cooper have to match that increase for employees paid through local funds.

The district expects a 7-percent raise for school-based administrators and a 3-percent raise for certified and non-certified staff.

Clark also recognized that benefits costs continue to rise for both CMS and its teachers, which means they’re taking home less money after benefits. CMS estimated a 3.56 percent net decrease in take-home pay since 2008.

CMS is seeking a total of $10.3 million for

increases in salaries and benefits; however, the actual cost is unknown because it depends on state action.

Clark didn’t ask for any additional pay increase from the county, but hopes CMS and the county can develop a plan to increase local teacher supplements within the next few years.

Reaching students’ needs

In a time when CMS is trying to break-up high concentrations of poverty, the pressure is on to reach those students.

That’s why Clark said a “critical need” for this year’s budget is increasing student support services, which comes with a $4.43 million price tag and adds 42 school counselors, six psychologists and 12 social workers.

“We know that social and emotional issues can get in the way of academic achievement,” Clark said. “Our counselors, psychologists and social workers play important roles in developing a healthy mindset for every student. But our staffing ratios in these areas are well above those recommended by national professional organizations and this hinders our ability to provide comprehensive support to our students.”

In 2014-15, CMS launched a four-phase student support plan, seeking to improve social and emotional health services. The district completed the first phase and part of the second phase, adding 49 school counselors, six psychologists and five social workers, as well as school-based mental health supports in 101 schools.

However, the superintendent mentioned the district had forgone asking for increased student services in past budgets, but community members, staff and students consistently raise this need as a “top priority.”

Passing money to charter schools

CMS estimates 2,587 new students will enroll in local charter schools next year, as new schools open in Mecklenburg County.

The superintendent’s budget requests an additional $6.7 million in county funding for the charter school pass-through.

According to state law, when a local district calculates its per-pupil spending, the school system must pass on that spending to local charter schools for each student attending those schools when they otherwise would attend CMS. If the county doesn’t allocate additional funds, the money has to come out of other parts of the budget and could lead to diminished initiatives or resources.

Gaining feedback

Clark said she’s worked with incoming Superintendent Clayton Wilcox on the budget, but is still looking for additional feedback.

The district will host three community meetings on the budget, with one at Jay M. Robinson Middle School on April 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The board will host a public hearing on the budget recommendation at its April 25 meeting and seek to approve the budget at the May 9 meeting.

I got my why, how and what in the wrong order

I used to get in trouble with the Charlotte Rescue Mission board on how I explained our work to the community when I did public speaking. They told me, “Tell them what we do,” to which I replied, “Let me tell them why we do it.”

We couldn’t agree. That was until a few years ago.

I watched a Ted Talk by Simon Sinek.

He draws three circles, each within the other (think of a bullseye). The outer circle represents the “what” you do – what a company makes. The middle circle represents “how” the product is made. The inner, or smallest circle, represents the “why.” More than making a profit, why does a company exist?

He explained Dell and Microsoft market their products by starting from the outer circle – the “what.” They make computers. They move to the middle circle, the “how” stating they use Intel processors. Finally, they move to the inner circle, the “why” by asking you to buy one. You yawn.

Apple is different. Apple starts with the inner circle, the “why.” Their “why” is, “Everything we do challenges the status quo.” Their middle circle, “how” states,

“We invent technology you didn’t even know you needed.” Their outer circle, the “what” is, “We package it into attractive looking products called Rev. Tony iPhones. Do you want to buy one?” An Apple person will camp out for three days in the snow to buy the next iPhone. When was the last time you saw someone camped out to buy a Dell computer?

As a young pastor, I preached by starting at the outer circle, the “what” – God wanted to give us life eternal and life abundant. I moved to the middle circle, the “how” this was possible – Jesus died on the cross for my sins. I never reached the inner circle, the “why” of Christianity. Today, I start at the inner circle. Let me explain.

The inner circle, the “why” of Christianity is simply this: “God loves you and me.” The middle circle is “how” it happens. To make sure God can make that love relationship happen, He took care of my mess by dying on the cross. Lastly, I move to the outer circle, the “What” – God gives me life eternal and life abundant.

I have a sermon, titled “God Loves You.” I get to a point in the sermon where

I say, “Have you ever seen a 70-year-old Billy Graham look out upon thousands of people in a stadium and say these words, “God loves you?” To imitate Billy Graham, I divide the sanctuary into six sectors. As I point to each sector, I say, “God loves you.” I point to sector one and say, “God loves you.” I point to sector two and do the same. I repeat it at the next sector, “God loves you.” As I approach sector four, I slow down and say, “God loves you.” I do the same with sector five.

Then I have a very long pause. The room is silent. No one is moving. You can hear the lights in the sanctuary. People are nervous as I conclude by pointing at sector six by saying “God loves you.” I can almost hear the congregation say back to me, “Tell us we messed up. Tell us what we need to do, who we need to serve, what we need to give. But don’t tell us, ‘God loves me.’ I’ll do things for God but He could never love me.”

I hope you see the “why” – God loves you.

This is part of the shop’s strategy to expand its wholesale reach and trade show opportunities.

“While we are going to miss having a retail location in Ballantyne, we are excited to have our family back under one roof,” co-owner Robin Ciordia said. “This consolidation also enables us to go in a different direction and to streamline our business and production.”

The 6-foot-2, junior point guard averaged 24.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He eclipsed the 1,500-point barrier for his career. Dotson, who claims more than 20 scholarship offers, including several from high major programs, was unanimously named CISAA Player of the Year. He also made the NCISAA 3A all-state team for the second straight season.

Wertz, who claims multiple scholarship offers, made the CISAA all-conference team.

BATES JONES Charlotte Latin Jones was sidelined for a good portion of basketball season due to a shoulder injury he sustained during Latin’s run to a state title in football, but still managed to play a meaningful role for the Hawks on the hardwood. The 6-foot-8 forward, who was a team captain, averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Jones, a Davidson College signee, made the CISAA all-conference team and was selected to participate in the NCISAA All-Star Game.

Providence Day BRYANT THOMAS South Meck Thomas was one of the most dominant post players in the state.

The 6-foot-8 big man was a doubledouble machine. He averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and led the nation in blocks with 7.7 per game.

Thomas, who is receiving significant interest from several Division I programs, was named So. Meck 8 Conference Player of the Year and received all-district and allMecklenburg recognition.

Zailan Peeler was huge for the Mustangs this season. The 6-foot-3, senior guard averaged 17.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Peeler, who made the Southwestern 4A Conference allconference team, claims scholarship offers from King University, Wingate University, University of Mount Olive and Carson-Newman University.

JALEN KNIGHT United Faith Knight was crucial to putting United Faith’s basketball program back on the map. The senior guard was the Falcons go-to player. He averaged 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists per game.

Knight, who signed with the University of Hartford, earned team MVP, SPAA Conference MVP and NCISAA 1A all-state honors.

North Carolina has big shoes to fill in its receiving corps after losing three of its top targets in Ryan Switzer, Mack Hollins and Bug Howard to graduation. Their departures have created the opportunity for south Charlotte natives Austin Proehl and Thomas Jackson to take on greater roles in the offense, especially in the passing game.

Proehl, the son of former NFL veteran wide receiver Ricky Proehl, played his high school ball at Providence, where he amassed more than 2,000 all-purpose yards and scored 25 touchdowns during two years of varsity action with the Panthers.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior is a natural. He grew up learning the fundamentals of the game from his father. Proehl isn’t only a reliable pass catcher, but has been UNC’s best route runner almost since he arrived on campus.

Proehl has been in the rotation of receivers since he was a true freshman, but emerged as an even more significant contributor last season as a junior when he reeled in 43 receptions for 597 yards and three touchdowns. He became North Carolina’s third option in its passing attack. Now, Proehl is the Tar Heels’ go-to target.

“I’ve prepared for this my whole life,” Proehl said. “I’ve prayed and asked to be in this position since I got here three-and-a-half years ago. I’m blessed. I’m happy to be in this position. I’m taking full advantage of my role, full advantage of the opportunity. I’m excited about what’s to come.”

North Carolina wide receiver and former Butler great Anthony Ratliff-Williams said Proehl is the veteran in the receiving corps, because of what he knows and has done on the field. Ratliff-Williams said he and the other receivers will follow Proehl’s lead.

Jackson’s journey has been different. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior came to Chapel Hill as a walk-on after an impressive high school career at Charlotte Country Day, where he amassed nearly 1,600 yards of total offense and scored 19 touchdowns. However, Jackson wasn’t expected to do much, but he has flipped those expectations upside down.

North Carolina football coach Larry Fedora elevated Jackson from his status as a walk-on to a scholarship player before the start of last season during fall camp. He shocked most people, especially his opponents when he caught a 34-yard touchdown pass during UNC’s biggest win of the year last season, a 37-35, victory on the road at Florida State.

Jackson finished last with 17 receptions for 186 yards and four touchdowns.

Now, he is the Heels’ second most experienced receiver behind Proehl.

Ratliff-Williams said Jackson has several tools that he brings to the team, which he displayed last season. Jackson will get the opportunity display his repertoire of talents on a much grander scale in 2017.

“I’m going to get more plays,” Jackson said. “I’m really expecting my role to really increase next year.”

Jackson said he and Proehl are there to encourage and pick up the younger receivers around them.

“You got to be more vocal,” Jackson said. “Guys are going to look to me and Proehl. They’re going to look to us when we need a play.”
