Legislator opposes solar farm by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

MONROE – N.C. Rep. Mark Brody has emerged as the biggest opponent of Blue Star Solar’s attempts to develop a solar farm on about 600 acres three miles south of Mineral Springs. Brody was the sole person to speak out against the project during the Feb. 7 rezoning hearing. Brody explained he was not there in a legislative capacity but as a private citizen. “The large capacity solar-gener-

ating industry that creates these solar-farm projects are heading for the chopping block as we are forced as a nation to cut back expenses,” Brody told commissioners. “The simple reason is because they require subsidies – federal, state and rate-payer – in order to survive.” County staff and planning board are recommending approval of the rezoning. While its scale is out of character with surrounding area and will remove large amount of agricultural land, it will not increase noise or traffic or decrease property values,

according to Senior Planner Bjorn Hansen. The biggest selling point from the development team was that the solar farm will increase the tax base over 40 years from $280,000 to $2 million without the need for water, sewer and county services. “If the solar farm isn’t there ... the land will be developed otherwise,” said Logan Secord, project manager for Pine Gate Renewables. “And those developments … will also pay taxes, but they will also increase the see FARM, Page 5A

MONROE – Gary Studley would like to rev up the Hot Rod Shop by developing three mini-storage buildings next-door. Studley, who restores classic cars and builds hot rods at the shop, has applied for rezoning through Union County to convert the 6.4 acres of residential property along U.S. 75 in the Monroe area. “Mini warehouses would actually help our existing business,” Studley told commissioners Feb. 7. “Right now, I’m having to store cars in a work area and I’m waiting on parts.” The mini-storage units will replace land Studley has used for car shows. Those will no longer happen onsite, he said. Bjorn Hansen, a senior planner with Union County, told commissioners that the highway is mainly residential with spots of business. “It’s an expansion of an existing business that is already there, but it’s not zoned business,” Hansen told commissioners. “It had some special use permits and was grandfathered in before zoning took effect. This cleans up the zoning for the property as well and will rezone the existing business.” Staff and planning board recommended approval. While the proposal allows commercial uses next to large lot residential uses, it brings the existing business into compliance with zoning and is consistent with the land use plan, Hansen said.

didn’t date a lot in high school. College was better. I dated my freshman year, but no spark got ignited. In my sophomore year of college, I was hanging out with a girl just as friends. Everyone said we needed to date. We tried and it didn’t work. We broke up both

as boyfriend/girlfriend as well as friends. There were a few other women, but it never went past two dates. At college, I was involved with the campus ministry. Since we were not chartered by the Student Government Organization, we needed to apply for membership by submitting our constitution and by-laws. I remember the day I submitted them to the secretary. There sat Joan, in a turquoise blouse with white piping. I was smitten. She would be the mother of my children.

One problem was that we moved in different circles. While she hung out in the campus pub and was often seen in campus newspaper photos partying, I never went to a party. But I was convinced we could make this work. That was the last time I spoke to her. I never forgot her during my junior and senior years of college. I never ran into her again. She was this woman that I had said one sentence to and had no idea how to get her attention. That is until … I was on

the four-and-a-half-year plan at college. I declared my major late and added being a high school teacher to my major. Teaching took so many credit hours. I found myself approaching graduation with 150 credit hours, even though I only needed 120 to graduate. But I was 18 credit hours short in sociology. I signed up for six courses my last semester and convinced the department chair to let me graduate with the minimum credit hours see FAITH, Page 5A

Nonprofit tries to keep people in housing

MATTHEWS – The Matthews HELP Center is working to help residents avoid eviction and utility disconnection as prices increase and resources for financial assistance dwindle. The nonprofit provides short-term crisis assistance to neighbors in five zip codes: 28104 (Matthews/Stallings), 28105 (Matthews); 28226 and 28270 (Charlotte), and 28079 (Indian Trail). It provided more than $1.4 million in assistance to 11,000 residents from the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 to December 2021. “Over the past two years during the pandemic, we have seen the need nearly double,” Executive Director Sandra Conway said. “Thanks to the community and their support, we have been able to meet approximately 85% to 100% of the need, but with inflation and the increases in everything from gas to food to rent, there doesn’t seem to be any relief in sight. The cost of living continues to rise and wages are not. Individuals and families need a livable wage that will provide a decent standard of living.” Development Director Susan Ross said the Matthews HELP Center’s financial assistance program provides support for rent, utilities, daycare and transportation. Non-financial assistance includes three days of emergency food, clothing/shopping vouchers in its thrift store and referral resources. Ross said the community allowed for the center last fiscal year to provide $864,169 in financial and non-financial support services to 2,101 households impacting 5,662 individuals. “As the pandemic continues and individuals are having to be out of work due to quarantining, the request for financial assistance also continues,” Ross said. “During the month of January, the organization has provided more than $75,000 in financial assistance to the community on a budget of $35,000. That is significant and unsustainable without the continued support of our community. “We have also just learned that resources such as RAMP Charlotte have stopped taking applications for rent, hotel and utility support, which will add an additional strain to our resources and social work team.” People in need of help can apply at www.matthewshelpcenter.org. “Our social work team is very busy with families seeking help,” Conway said. “We will continue to support as many families as possible with available funding and small staff.”

three disciplines and competes at the senior level. “I have never worked harder or dedicated more time and energy to something,” she said. Balancing schoolwork, training and other activities hasn’t been easy. It has meant giving up other hobbies, not participating in after-school clubs and completing homework at night after tiring practice sessions. There is also no sleeping in during the summer or other school breaks, as training often begins at 6 a.m. “One of the things I’ve always admired in Brittlyn as a skater is her persistence in acquiring difficult skills,” said Michele Subbot Sobehart, Brittlyn’s head skating coach. “She tackles everything presented to her with enthusiasm and shows resilience in challenging situations. “When most other people would give up on new skills or accept work less than their best, she is willing to be coached forward. She consistently asks what she can do better and how she can reach her goals.” As she finished high school, Brittlyn wanted to

for my major. That fall, I walked into one of my six sociology classes. Guess who was sitting in the class? Joan. We struck up a brief conversation. Two hours later, I walked into another sociology class. Again, you won’t believe who was in the class. It was Joan. By now, you are assuming she became the mother of my children. There is a wrinkle in this story. Three months before my final fall

That led her to Utah State University, where she continued to train and compete while double majoring in kinesiology and psychology. But she is putting school and skating on hold for eighteen months as she makes a different kind of sacrifice and begins a different kind of training – that of becoming a full-time missionary. A typical missionary’s schedule begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 10:30 p.m. Young missionaries live and work with a companion of the same gender and spend

their days in a structured manner participating in such activities as personal study, performing community service and proselytizing. While serving as missionaries, they avoid entertainment and other activities common to this age group, so they can focus on teaching others the gospel of Jesus Christ. Though stepping off the ice and leaving friends, coaches and family behind will be a tearful experience, Brittlyn knows she is doing exactly what she was meant to do and is looking forward to teaching others that God loves them.

The development team also touted buffers that far exceed county standards, such as 50-foot vegetative buffers between the farm and homes. Brody doesn’t believe such projects will reach the end of

their estimated 40-year life cycles. He doesn’t buy the idea of minimal local impacts and believes there are hidden costs to decommissioning solar farms. “If we don’t put a stop to the proliferation of these projects, our county and state will be littered with them,” he said.

semester, I met Dot. We were both working at a Christian camp near Lake George, New York. She was a senior counselor and her junior counselor, Loralyn, that came from the church where I lead the youth group. She kept pushing Dot to date me. Dot felt that I was a snob. Finally, she agreed. It was on the second date that I realized this person was completely different from anyone I had ever dated. I could be myself and was still accepted. I wasn’t seen as being “quirky.”

Twice a week, Joan and I would go over to the library and she would hear me tell her about this woman called Dot that I was dating. She was gracious. It’s too easy to marry because all our friends are getting married. We may be a certain age and want to start a family. We find someone who is not our soul mate. Let me encourage you to be patient and find that person who allows you to be yourself as you allow them to be themselves. I’ll be back soon. Until then, live well my friend.

YMCA gets a $30,000 boost

CHARLOTTE – The Regions Foundation announced a $30,000 grant Feb. 7 to support the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. The grant will be used to cover costs associated with the YMCA’s Afterschool program at the Morrison Family, Keith Family, Lake Norman and Lowe’s YMCAs. Encouraging students to “excel after the bell,” the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s Afterschool program offers three- and five-day options providing students with a place to play, learn and grow through educational and imaginative activities encouraging them to explore who they are and what they can achieve. “Access to safe, nurturing and affordable childcare provides parents with a peace of mind that is priceless while providing children with new opportunities to learn and excel,” said Marta Self, executive director of the Regions Foundation. “The YMCA of Greater Charlotte delivers this and much more to families through Afterschool, an environment that broadens students’ horizons, promotes creativity and encourages them to connect socially. Founded in 1874, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte serves more than 300,000 people each year through a variety of programs, services and events. Its Afterschool program provides engaging educational, physical and social-emotional activities that support holistic development for youth.

Camps YMCA of Greater Charlotte continues offering two overnight options: Camp Harrison in Boomer and Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie. A variety of day camps can be found at several of the organization’s branches, including Brace Family YMCA, Morrison Family YMCA, McCrorey YMCA as well as the Ballantyne Arts Center. Like sports? They have it. Enjoy swimming. You got it. Weeklong camps span from April 16-22 to Aug. 22-28. On the web: www.ymcacharlotte.org

In Depth The Morrison YMCA, for example, offers a wealth of specialty camps. Some of the options available for children ages 5 to 8 include American Girl Camp, Classic Arcade Games, Cooking Camp, Flag Football, LEGO Camp, Mad Scientist Camp, Nickelodeon Days Camp, Pokemon Camp and Jedi in Training.

Project Scientist earns $1M grant CHARLOTTE – Project Scientist will receive a grant of $1 million from Trane Technologies, payable over three years. The grant includes funding for Project Scientist to add a new mentoring program and expand internationally into Mexico. The Charlotte-based nonprofit offers a virtual after-school STEM Club and virtual summer STEM camps for girls ages 4 to 12 in three time zones. STEM Club this spring will explore machine learning, climate change in national parks, and the chemistry of medicine and pharmacology. Eighty-five percent of Project Scientist girls come from under-resourced communities and receive financial aid from Project Scientist to attend.

Trane Technologies’ collaboration with Project Scientist will support nearly 800 girls between the ages of 4 and 12 each year of the three-year commitment. Trane Technologies employees will mentor girls and give them a behind-the-scenes look at STEM careers and workplaces. Trane Technologies has pledged $100 million and 500,000 volunteer hours to build sustainable futures for underrepresented populations. “Children exposed to STEM education are not just learning new skills in problem-solving, computational thinking and collaboration - they are absorbing the signals they see,” said Steve Hagood, who chairs Project Scientist’s board. “That’s why just a glimpse of people, especially women, in STEM careers can unlock new dreams for what they can be.”

Things to consider heading into summer Preparing for camp can be daunting during the slow pace of summer. Here are some things to keep in mind amid the frenzy. • Housing – Whether your overnight camp involves cabins or college dorm rooms, there’s a good chance your children are going to have roommates. Remind them about that sharing rule you told them years ago. • Independence – Some kids

are eager to leave home. Others are clingy. Summer camp provides a gentle nudge toward independence. • Knowledge – Enrolling your children in academic or arts camps early in the summer could be just the trick to minimizing summer brain rust. They may spend the rest of the summer expanding their expertise or fine-tuning techniques. • Overnight camp – They may be pricey, but overnight camps build

confidence in your children. They also give parents a true vacation. • Packing – Preparation is the key to a pleasant packing experience. A pleasant packing experience prevents a lack of clean underwear. • Questions – It’s not only important to ask camp organizers plenty of questions about the upcoming experience, but it’s also good to quiz your children when they return home to see if they had fun.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING Community Development Block Grant Entitlement Program 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan Substantial Amendment #1 2020-2024 Citizen Participation Plan Amendment #2 February 11, 2022 To All Interested Agencies, Groups, and Persons: Mecklenburg County would like your participation in the review of the 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan Substantial Amendment #1, and the 2020-2024 Citizen Participation Plan Amendment #2 for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan Substantial Amendment #1 The 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan Substantial Amendment #1 will be amended to reflect the addition of Mint Hill to the Mecklenburg County CDBG Consortium as additional participating jurisdiction; additionally, the allocation of the remaining CDBG-CV1 funds ($180,312) along with CDBGCV3 funds ($857,608) to fund the County’s general program administration costs and county wide mortgage relief assistance program as a CDBG program eligible public service activity connected to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2020-2024 Citizen Participation Plan Amendment #2 The 2020-2024 Citizen Participation Plan will be amended to reflect a change for the use of CDBG funds for existing projects from a 20% to a 50% increase or decrease of the total project budget to reduce the frequency of subjecting new projects to lengthy Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan amendment processes, which have previously resulted in and are projected to result in significant delays in initiating new projects, thus hindering the County’s ability to serve beneficiaries through eligible activities and spend CDBG funds in a timely manner. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the County will hold a virtual public hearing on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 5:00 PM, to enable citizens the opportunity to comment on the proposed amendments. Attendees will be able to participate via computer or telephone, please see access details below. If you wish to attend the meeting via telephone and would like to receive the meeting materials, or if you would like the meeting link emailed to you, please contact Christina Danis at (704) 688-6502 or cdanis@centralina.org. Copies of these documents can be accessed at www.MeckNC.Gov or at www.centralina.org.
