Marvin explores large commercial project Village would get grocery store, senior housing

MARVIN – Marvin leaders have scheduled a public hearing to hear the community’s feedback on Marvin Gardens, a development project that pairs a neighborhood shopping center with an age-restricted community.

Regency Centers seeks to rezone 38.7 acres off the southeast corner of Providence and New Town roads for 92,098 square feet of commercial space and up to 25 age-restricted homes.

A 55,000-square-foot grocery, openly referred to as a Publix store, will anchor the commercial space. A handful of smaller buildings will be placed toward the road to take attention away from the parking.

The Marvin Village Council has called for a public hearing for Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Banks Presbyterian Church’s fellowship hall, located at 10012 New Town Road.

“Marvin Gardens will enhance the community’s connection to its agrarian and equestrian roots,” according to Regency’s rezoning application. “Acting together, the homes and shops will strengthen the sense that this is a place with a unique history.”

Country barns, small town shops and farmhouses inspired the look of the project. The Publix, for example, is slated to have barn lanterns, barn-door effects and shadowboxed lights out front.

The company felt the area’s low density couldn’t support a 260,000-square-foot commercial development as approved in 2008, so it added age-restricted housing and brought on Saussy Burbank to build them.

“Regency Centers and Saussy Burbank are committed to providing a unique interactive community experience for essentials of life, including comfortable places to live, shop, dine, entertain, socialize and generally feel at home,” according to the application. “The goal is to create a family-oriented, multi-generation neighborhood gathering place.”

Public involvement meetings were held in March and May 2015. The planning board held meetings March 26, April 21, April 27, June 1 and June 16 of last year to hammer out details.

In January, the Marvin Planning Board voted 3-1 to send a favorable recommendation to the village council, pending nine considerations.

Some of their concerns dealt with residential design and density; buffers, screenings and setbacks; drive-thrus and convenience uses; and traffic.

Anthony Burman was the only dissenting vote because he felt there were too many inconsistencies with the Marvin Land Use Plan. He was concerned about a gas station and fast food being 35 feet from the road. He also wanted more details for the landscape plan and building elevations.

Other planning board members agreed with Burman’s concerns, but they wanted the council to work with the developer on addressing those issues.

Town Administrator Lisa Thompson led an hour-long discussion with the village council Oct. 11 as they tried to finalize a list of conditions to present to the developer.

Tree mitigation was among the biggest concerns amongst the council.

The developer proposes to remove 590 trees from the property. The village requires mitigat-

ing 742 trees, but the developer is only proposing 657. Village staff will likely ask why they aren’t able to meet the requirement.

Other areas to work out include how much parking to allow, how many cars should be stacked at drive-thrus and how far should the commercial buildings be from the road.

“I feel like we really bent toward the developer here and tried to be very accommodating,” Mayor Pro Tem Brian Beaty said following the discussion. “Hopefully we’ll clear this last hurdle.”

Councilman Nick Dispenziere said he was more comfortable about the plan than he was when the village first received it.

“I appreciate everyone’s input and work on it,” Dispenziere said. “I hope we can wrap this up and get a good product.”

The project compares favorably to Courtyards at Marvin and Amber Meadows, two other agerestricted communities in the village, in term of density, lot size, setbacks and buffers.

Marvin Gardens will consist of 15.67 acres of residential space at a density of 1.59 dwelling units per acre.

Mayor Joe Pollino told the council that the project garnered interest from N.C. Sen. Tommy Tucker, who seemed concerned about the pace of the rezoning. Tucker passed legislation earlier this year that moved land out of Marvin’s jurisdiction to help expedite a stalled commercial project.

“I assured him the process is the process,” Pollino said.

What homes can I buy with $500,000?

My boss, Hannah Chronis, has agreed to buy me any home I want in Union County as long as it costs between $450,000 and $550,000.

This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily true, but I wrote the first draft of this story on magic paper that makes wishes come true. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so glad that a persuasive Charlotte street vendor sold me a pack for $100.

I looked up $500,000 homes on Realtor. com in western Union County, including Monroe, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Marvin and that clump of Stallings, Weddington and Wesley Chapel that confuses me.

I will highlight a tantalizing home from each area and then pick the one that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll lie about buying to Facebook friends until someone rats me out.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Strong adherence to family values has been a recurrent central theme of the National Republican Party for the past several decades.

However, recent events have arisen suggesting such commitment to be a mere myth, intended primarily to mislead the public and secure votes rather than model a moral lifestyle. Nowhere is this more evident than in the video recording of presidential candidate, Donald Trump, privately boasting of his entitlement and habitual predatory groping of women.

Several weeks ago, the Union County Republican leadership proclaimed its strong support for Trump by engaging in a photo shoot with a Trump family member present at the opening of its campaign office.

Now that Trump’s lifestyle has become known, will those same Republican leaders continue to embrace him? Will those same leaders having young daughters at home validate Trump’s contempt and sexual abuse of women by continuing to work on his behalf? Would they allow such a man with to be at home alone with their daughters? Is this the type of “family values” Republican leaders claim to cherish and hold dear?

Trump’s response, though, might be to mitigate the damage by telling everyone to cool down. Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill. After all, Trump’s sexual “generosity” was not directed against all women.

It only targeted those females having beauty

scores of seven and above.

Yup, strong family values! Does it entail actual respect for women? That’s the dilemma facing Union County Republican leaders. Support family values or work to elect Trump?

I wanted to write you this note to express how glad I am that local news organizations, such as yourselves at Union County Weekly, cover education. Education is such a large part of children's lives and foundation as a successful human being in society. Having local news looking at schools and covering the good, as well as the bad, is very important because many parents don't fully understand what is happening at many schools, and the children will often not understand that their teachers are not raising them to their full potential.

I'm also glad that news organizations can cover changes in budget or redistricting so that people who want to learn about the political changes to the school system can and are able to voice their opinions to the people who are in charge. I'm glad that I live in a place where there is such a good focus on education in local news. News Briefs Union County firefighters fight floods in wake of Matthew MONROE – Union County firefighters responded last week to Columbus and Bladen counties devastated by flooding from Hurricane Matthew.

Firefighters from Monroe, Stallings, Bakers, Wesley Chapel, Unionville and Beaver Lane departed Monday, Oct. 10 and returned on Thursday, Oct. 13.

The crews, which responded with fire engines and tankers, primarily assisted in Bladen County where the Black and Cape Fear rivers reached record flood levels.

The crews were based at the White Lake and Kelly volunteer fire departments. The firefighters were responsible for all fire, rescue and first responder coverage in those areas. They performed wellbeing checks, food and water delivery to residents who chose to stay in their homes, medication delivery and searched flooded homes.

Flood waters often exceeded five feet.

“This group operated in the most honorable way,” said Capt. Charlie Porter of Monroe Fire Station 2. “It was an honor to be with a group of professionals that represented the City of Monroe, Union County and the volunteer fire departments with such compassion and integrity.”

The overflow began at approximately 12:30 p.m. flowing intermittently until 4 p.m., and is estimated at a total of 9,000 gallons, which entered an unnamed tributary to Crooked Creek.

The overflow did not cause immediate danger to human health or the environment.

All pipes, pumps, and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflow. The sewer overflow was the result of nearby construction activities, which damaged collection system components, allowing debris to accumulate in the manhole and pipes.

Stallings holds barbecue fest STALLINGS – On Oct. 15, residents from Stallings and across the county celebrated fall during the town’s annual Blues, Brews & BBQ event.

The day included a barbecue competition, live music and a beer garden.

The town also welcomed barbecue vendors from across the county. Flat Bottom Barbecue won first place in the competition. Colossus Q Barbecue placed second. Killer Q Barbecue won third place.

More than 2,500 people attended.

Annual ‘Warbirds over Monroe’ air show slated for Nov. 12, 13 MONROE – The annual Warbirds over Monroe air show will take place Saturday, Nov. 12 and Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport. The event will include more than 40 World War II aircrafts, re-enactors, kids’ activities and vendors.

The show, which is held on Veteran’s Day weekend, will honor the country’s service men and women.

There also will be P-51 Mustangs, a c-47 that flew in Normandy, Huey and Cobra helicopters, Douglas C-54, Pitts Biplanes, T-6 Texans, 450 Stearman, SBDs, and Guests will be able to talk with the pilots and learn the history of each aircraft. There will also be opportunities to speak with men and women in uniform and to thank them for their service.

Tickets at the gate cost $15 for adults, $10 for students 12 to 18 years old and $5 for veterans.

Children younger than 12 years old are free.

Stallings agrees to retail alliance

Chamber highlights nonprofits

STALLINGS – Stallings intends to enter an agreement with Monroe, Indian Trail, Waxhaw and Wingate allowing Monroe-Union County Economic Development to recruit retail on behalf of the five towns.

But there’s a catch.

Stallings only agreed to enter the alliance for three years. Monroe-Union County Economic Development sought a five-year term to offer a retrial recruiter a better sense of job security.

Stallings leaders were hesitant to commit for five years, considering they’d have to pay $10,000 annually and there was not a guaranteed return on investment.

Mayor Wyatt Dunn said developers like Dennis Moser are already talking to potential retailers.

MONROE – The Union County Chamber of Commerce plans to put a spotlight on member charities at its fourth annual nonprofit showcase.

Trent Turner, general manager at Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, will talk about his company’s support of area nonprofits.

The event takes place at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at South Piedmont Community College, 4209 Old Charlotte Hwy., Monroe. Register by Oct. 24.

Somewhere over the rainbow: Post-marriage equality in North Carolina family law

On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court decided Obergefell v Hodges, making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. With legal recognition, however, comes the complicated legal issues that may accompany a separation and divorce in North Carolina. The same issues that many heterosexual couples experience (e.g., divorce, custody, child support, spousal support, and property distribution) may now factor into a same-sex separation. However, the legal implications in NC for LGBTQ citizens may not be as straight forward as it seems.

ADOPTION: Previously in NC, same-sex couples were prohibited from adopting children even if they were legally married in another state.

When the law changed recognizing same-sex marriage, those couples became eligible to adopt children together as spouses. Additionally, where only one parent was the legal or adoptive parent, stepparent adoptions are now available to formalize the parent-child relationship for the other spouse.

CHILD CUSTODY: Although the Supreme Court’s ruling would suggest that a same-sex couple’s status shouldn’t be considered as a basis for a custodial award, in cases where only one parent is recognized as the legal parent, the implications for the other same-sex spouse may prove to be detrimental. It’s not yet known whether lawyers will find ways to suggest that the same-sex status would constitute a “substantial change of circumstances” warranting the modification of a custody order.

EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION: Prior to the Obergefell ruling, divorcing same-sex couples in NC were left to the whims of “title” in determining who got what property. For example, if the car that Linda drove was titled in Susan’s name, the car would go to Susan irrespective of whether the couple was together when the car was purchased and regardless of whether Linda used her own money to pay for the car. Now, with the recognition of same-sex marriage, that same car would be considered marital property pursuant to NC equitable distribution laws. In addition, same-sex spouses may now own property titled to them as tenancy by the entireties, which affords protection from the creditors of each individual spouse, precluding them from forcing a sale of the property to pay a debt.

NC is gradually changing the laws as they affect LGBTQ families. Study shows benefits to renovating Center Theatre

MONROE – If the city invests $6 million into renovating Center Theatre, the venue could generate up to $2.7 million in earnings and 66 jobs by the third year of operation, according to a new study.

The city hired Webb Management Services to evaluate how to revive the theater, which closed in 1991 after 51 years of operation. Christina Kruise, a project manager with the firm, provided Monroe City Council an update Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Kruise described the theater as a catalytic program for downtown redevelopment with the potential to attract companies, workers and residents. She offered reasons why Monroe needs to renovate it, including: • The market has the characteristics and growth potential to support new programs.

• Gaps exist in providing space for events, meetings and high-quality performances.

• There’s demand for a renovated theater among local and regional groups.

• Redevelopment falls in line with goals outlined in Monroe’s plans, especially those addressing economic development or downtown improvements.

Kruise’s team outlined two design options for the theater.

Option one includes the stage, lobby and back-of-the-house operations. Option two includes these same uses, but incorporates some of the operations underneath the stage.

Both options allow for about 470 seats, 20 of which can be removed to allow room for an orchestral pit.

David Bellamy, of LS3P Associates, estimates the first option could cost $6.7 million and second option cost $7 million. Each would be split into two phases.

The company, which dates back to 1964, employs about 60 people.

The study calls for Monroe to retain ownership of the theater, given its resources.

Monroe could employ an executive director, as well as technical director, development director and front of the house manager, not to mention technical and events staff. The city could save money by potentially outsourcing some operations, such as ticketing, food and presenting.

The Center Theatre Foundation would take the lead on fundraising in the private sector during the initial capital campaign and provide ongoing financial support. The foundation could also take on some programming and outreach.

Kruise recommended developing partnerships with South Piedmont Community College, Union County Public Schools and Union Symphony Orchestra.

“All of these partnerships will develop differently, depending on how each partner thinks they can use the facility,” she said.

Webb Management Services will continue building operating and capital budgets, as well as create a plan to show how all the pieces need to move forward. She expects to give a community presentation next month.

Common Heart raises $27K to feed families in need Staff Report

INDIAN TRAIL – About 350 people gathered at Weddington United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 7, for Common Heart’s eighth annual Love in Action Fundraising Banquet.

The event raised $27,072, which is enough to provide a week’s worth of groceries for 1,353 local families in need. About half of that amount was raised by Common Heart Booster Teams, made up of local supporters who gathered to collect donations for Common Heart in the weeks

leading up to the banquet.

This year’s banquet featured a buffet with food donated by more than 25 local restaurants, a variety show and silent auction.

Regena Braswell, of Wesley Chapel, was named Common Heart Volunteer of the Year.

Husband and wife Manny and Eva Guia, of Monroe, were named Common Things Volunteers of the Year. Indian Trail’s Ron Saggio was named the Common Cupboard Volunteer of the year, and Threshold Church received Partner of the Year.

Why you should vote â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;yesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for the UCPS bond

Most everyone is aware by now that a $54 million school bond is up for a vote on the Nov. 8 ballot. Representatives from Union County Public Schools and volunteers from the schools targeted to receive these funds have been busy over the last couple of months trying to educate Union County residents about the projects planned. As a parent in the Sun Valley cluster, and a vocal advocate for this community, I have been working alongside many other parents to lobby support for the bond. While six other schools will receive funds for necessary additions and improvements and a new bus depot will be built if the bond is approved, no school stands to benefit more than Sun Valley High School.

So, why should you vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? for the bond?

First, quite simply, people move to Union County primarily for two reasons â&#x20AC;&#x201C; lower taxes and a great school system. But, as the $91-million jury decision a couple of years ago showed, when people are given a choice between the two, they choose the schools. If we want Union County to continue to be an attractive place to live and property values

to continue to increase, we have to continue to fund our schools adequately. And that means all of our schools.

We have a number of beautiful brand new schools in the county, but we also have many older schools with countless facility needs, none greater than 55-year old Sun Valley High School. The Union County Commissioners provide a limited budget to UCPS for capital improvements and facilities needs each year. That budget is insufficient to keep up with the list of current facility needs that is only going to grow as schools age. As the needs snowball, eventually your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school will have needs as well. We must pass this bond in order to address these most pressing needs so that the annual capital budget can be allotted to other less urgent issues.

If approved, $24 million of the bond would go to Sun Valley to add 10 classrooms to accommodate the increasing student population, expanding the inadequate cafeteria and kitchen, renovating the auditorium, adding a chorus room, addressing A/C needs and various infrastructure issues, safety concerns, ADA compliance issues and upgrading all athletic facilities.

If you have been to Sun Valley High School, you know that the needs are there

and they are pressing.

Many residents arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t motivated to vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? because their schools arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receiving any funds. Remember, hundreds of millions of dollars from bond funds went to build your beautiful schools and athletic fields and stadiums. We in the Sun Valley community have been paying for that ever since. In fact, we have seen very little return on our tax dollars. We had to beg for a new roof and every high school in the county has had renovations and upgrades to their athletic facilities except Sun Valley, despite the urgent needs noted in the 2009 Comprehensive Facilities Study done by UCPS. Some in the Sun Valley community itself say they may vote against the bond because they want a brand new school instead. This is a counterproductive position. While building a new school is probably a better use of funds, the county commissioners, in their wisdom, refused to put the funds necessary to build a new school in the bond package.

That means that, if the bond should fail, Sun Valley will receive nothing. Our facilities will continue to deteriorate with little hope for improvement. Unfortunately, we must vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? to get as much as we can.

We must vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? because it will especially benefit all of us in the Indian Trail and Sun

Valley community with regard to property values and community perception. We all have to vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yes.â&#x20AC;?

Finally, you should vote for the bonds because, whether or not you and your school will benefit directly from the funds, it is the right thing to do for your neighbors. All of the schools included in the bond package have legitimate needs. But, as a Sun Valley parent, I have to say, it is our turn. We have begged, pleaded and argued first with Union County Public Schools to acknowledge our needs and now with the county commissioners. No one cared about our needs until the recent redistricting and then everyone cared when they thought their children might come to Sun Valley.

It is time to put your money and your vote where your mouth was. Please, vote yes Nov. 8.

Monroe High deals with high population, small space

MONROE – Students shuffle throughout packed hallways trying to make it to class on time.

One set of students goes up one set of stairs, but a group of students are trying to funnel down. Traffic jam. The tardy bell rings and teachers are still trying to guide students through the halls.

That’s the daily life of a Monroe High School student.

They’re often tardy to class, not because they’re goofing off with their friends, but because they can’t maneuver around the massive amount of students in the hallways during each transition period.

Principal Mike Harvey is hoping to disperse the massive number of students with the additional eight classrooms that could be provided with the upcoming UCPS bond.

Monroe High makes up $3.45 million of the bond. If approved, the school will receive eight additional classrooms, teacher workrooms and teacher offices, increasing capacity to 1,400 students.

The school’s demographics demonstrate that it’s already right on the cusp of its current cap of 1,200 students.

Caps are based on state measures, which record the number of students at school on the 20th and 40th day. If students aren’t present those days, numbers can be skewed.

Harvey said the school had 1,201 students at school on Oct. 7 and 1,159 students Oct.10.

“We’re right there on the threshold and hallways are crowded,” he said.

The cafeteria and other open spaces, where many students congregate, quickly become crowded.

Based on students’ needs and those who qualify for free and reduced lunch, Monroe feeds about 750 to 800 students daily.

Harvey said the school sometimes struggles to ensure they make it through the lunch line.

Many faculty members must monitor the hallways and ensure the flow of traffic throughout the day. Within the school, one stairway is designated for students to travel down and the other is for travel up to ensure safety.

Approximately 15 teachers – including veteran teachers who volunteered to give up their classroom – don’t have their own classroom at Monroe, so they must travel to various classrooms all day.

“Even if I’m a science teacher and my planning block is third block, somebody is using my room third block. So, I can’t even use my planning period to cleanup science materials or prepare for the next lab. There is definitely a loss of instructional time when you’re sharing classrooms because you have to prepare classrooms,” Harvey said.

Harvey said the eight classrooms would be helpful, but it would still not be enough, as some teachers will still have to float.

If the bond doesn’t pass, Harvey predicts classes might have to be held in nontraditional areas, such as the auditorium, gymnasium, the teacher’s lounge or cafeteria.

“It’s not the most conducive learning environment, but we have a ‘can-do’ attitude and we’re going to get it done. The question we have to ask ourselves is are we going to get what’s best for our stu-

dents out of that and do our students do better?” Harvey said.

Monroe High School’s Student Government Association has taken a role in sharing the need for the bond.

Students have called residents, handed out flyers, shared messages on social media and traveled with the police force to different neighborhoods during Monroe Night Out to talk about how the bond could impact the county.

They plan to be stationed outside polling locations in November to advocate for the bond.

Monroe junior Caleb Darden said he believes he attends a “really good school” and that the bond project would allow for smaller classrooms, leaving an opportunity for more interpersonal relationships between teachers and students.

Senior Tomacina Mclendon said since her junior year, she has trouble getting to class on time with packed hallways and crowded classrooms. Some students don’t have time to use the restroom in between classes, and have to do so during instructional time.

Other students have trouble receiving personalized learning in the classrooms, as well as have trouble receiving additional help from floating teachers, as they can’t stay in one place during the school day.

“There are many classrooms with more than 30 kids that all need different kinds of education,” said Jennifer Pillar, a Monroe teacher.

“Monroe High School is a great place, but we do need help.”

Harvey suspects the population will continue to grow, as middle school student populations are comparable to last year’s count.

“Next year, we’ll be even larger, so there will be more challenges that I’m sure our team will be able to overcome. I’m confident they will. But we desperately need more room,” he said.

The school feels like it’s “bursting at the seams,” Pillar added, and she suspects that the same issues will come to newer schools, such as Marvin Ridge, in a few years.

“The burden is coming,” she said. “Union County is growing.”

Piedmont High School needs room to grow

MONROE – As one of the oldest schools in the county, Union County Public Schools staff believes Piedmont High School has natural capital needs.

Piedmont High’s $2.15-million portion of the bond would afford four additional classrooms, two teacher offices, teacher workrooms and student restrooms, increasing capacity to 1,600 students and creating an additional wing.

Piedmont High Principal Jonathan Tyson said classrooms are not necessarily overcrowded yet, but some are “large, but manageable.”

Piedmont was built in 1960 and has had renovations that included a new football stadium, completed last year.

A 2009 facilities study proclaimed the bleachers and stadium conditions were “unsatisfactory” and dangerous, and the stadium was not handicap accessible. The new stadium cost more than $1 million.

The school also raised funds to renovate the library last year to make two resource classrooms for exceptional children. The school made that possible through fundraising, and Piedmont’s maintenance department completed the construction work, Tyson said.

Tyson came to Piedmont in 2012 when it had about 1,000 students, but has since grown to about 1,400 student today. Demographic reports suggest the school will have about 1,600 by 2022, but Tyson said it’s coming in the next two years.

“Currently, I have four teachers that do not have a classroom,” Tyson said. “So, essentially what they do is they flow in and out of other teacher’s classrooms when they have planning period. It’s not an ideal situation from an educa-

tional standpoint, but we make do.”

The addition would give those teachers their own classrooms, as well as updated teachers space, “where if in fact, we have to go back to the model where we’re having to float teachers again in the future – which is what most likely will happen – they’ll have spaces where they can do work and plan that’s more conducive to what they do now,” he added.

Tyson said the mobile teachers have caused a morale issue, as teachers like to have their own space, which they can make conducive to their curriculum and instruction.

“What we see now is they have to just go in and make do with what’s already there,” Tyson said.

The school tries to line up floating teachers with classrooms that match their curriculum – i.e. a history teacher teaching in a history classroom rather than a math classroom – however, it doesn’t always work out because some-

times that’s the only space available.

“But our teachers have been good about it. They do the best that they can with what the situation currently is,” the principal said.

Even though he considers Piedmont “a small portion” of the bond, he believes space is needed.

If the bond doesn’t pass and enrollment continues to grow, more teachers will have to float and then it will affect the school’s master schedule.

“We’ll have to take into account that we have larger number of teachers that do not have their classroom space, so we’ll have to be mindful of that. We’ll have more teachers that are floating. It could continue to be an issue and a problem,” Tyson said.

Piedmont High has no mobile classrooms on its campus and he doesn’t predict any coming in the future.

“At this point in time, we have none and the plan is for us not to add some,” Tyson said.

The principal is optimistic for the bond to pass, suspecting if it were to move forward, the school would see its completed project in 18 to 24 months for teacher and student access.

He hopes work could start as early as summer 2017, and have the school community move into those spaces sometime within the 2017-18 school year.

What concerns Tyson the most, though, is the unforeseen future. Some board of education members have hinted that as Union County’s population continues to grow, there will be a need of revamping the district’s student assignment plan.

“If every senior graduated (in 2017), we’d have a class of 260,” Tyson said. “There are 400 eighth-graders sitting in middle school right now.”

Education Briefs UCPS launches improved app Union County Public Schools launched an app to connect the community to Union County Public Schools.

The app, “Union County Public Schools,” debuted last year, but the updates are a new feature.

Chief Communications Officer Tahira Stalberte said the new app is more Facebookand Twitter-like and user-friendly. The app improves how users receive announcements and the way stories are displayed. It also provides info for parents.

Individuals who already downloaded the app last year don’t have to re-download the app, as it updates automatically, Stalberte said.

Others can download the app on Google Play or the App Store.

Poplin student gives back MONROE – First-graders and kindergarteners at Poplin Elementary School learned about International Peace Day this month and

were challenged to show kindness.

First-grade students read books about kindness to kindergarteners, so students could listen to stories that support peace and an understanding of differences.

First-grade teachers Anne Marie Bretz and Michelle Ruby then challenged their students to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge.

First-grader Andrew Locke visited the Union County Sheriff’s Department and took a basket of fruit as part of the challenge. Other students performed household chores, wrote thank you letters and drew pictures for Poplin staff.

“This activity gave the students a chance to act out kindness in the community,” Ruby said.

Porter Ridge High School band competition this Saturday INDIAN TRAIL – The Porter Ridge High School “Band of Pirates” will host a competition, Porter Ridge Pirate Cove Classic, that welcomes 19 high school bands from the Carolinas to show off their music and marching skills.

The institute is a leadership development experience open to all high school girls in the Carolinas – including non-Girl Scouts, with the long-term goal to create the next generation of leaders by empowering young women.

“We are thrilled to welcome our inaugural cohort next month,” said Val Swan, project director for the Center for Creative Leadership. “These young women are coming from more than 20 different high schools across the Carolinas and are a diverse mix of ninth grade through 12th grade levels. The selection committee was very inspired by our interviews with them, and we look forward to their growth and development over the course of this year together.”

The following girls were selected: Marvin Ridge sophomore Katherine Beekman; Marvin Ridge junior Peyton Johnson; Union County Early College freshman Eden Megget; Cuthbertson junior Carolina Sweeter; and Metrolina Christian Academy senior Sara Thomas.

Extreme, emotionally charged moments never last.

Whether those moments are good ones, such as graduation ceremonies and wedding receptions, or bad ones, like breakups.

Adrenaline begins to fade and, eventually, we decompress and long to float back into that comfortable space we call “normal.”

But normal isn’t always there waiting on us, because normal has shifted.

I keep thinking about Keith Lamont Scott.

For his family, normal will never be the same.

He was a part of their normal. So, even when the adrenaline of grief subsides, the absence will still be there for them and they have to carry on.

I pray they will find the hope to do so. Should this column land in their hands, I want to say how deeply sorry I am for their loss. I deal too often in the sudden, unexpected loss of family members. In fact, I’m going through it with my own family this weekend.

Normal will forever shift for us, too.

Scott’s death also set in motion a chain of events that took our city into an extreme, emotionally charged moment – so extreme the whole world watched. But like all extreme moments, they can’t last. In this case, an entire city had to decompress and look for the landing strip back into normal. But normal had shifted. Or maybe it would be better to say that one hope of the protests was to show everyone that normal needed to shift because the current “normal” wasn’t good enough.

How do we ensure we don’t drift back into the old normal now that the adrenaline has faded from such a moment? I think the Christian faith has the best answer available: Love your neighbors.

Jesus told a story about a man who’d been beaten and left for dead on the side of the road.

Two religious leaders approached him and decided to avoid him because they did not want to defile themselves by touching a dead man.

They chose self over helping the man. A third man, who was a Samaritan, saw the man and came over to him. Then Jesus pauses and, before he says what the Samaritan did to help, he says the Samaritan “had compassion on him.”

Out of that compassion, the Samaritan then poured out radical generosity onto this man in need. He loved his neighbor first, then out of that love, did far more than anyone would ever expect of him.

The reason Jesus told this story was to explain to his religious audience what the true gospel looks like in practice. In the story, we are not to see ourselves as the good Samaritan. We are the one beaten by robbers and left for dead. Our lives fall short in so Spence Shelton many ways, and we are so often left hopeless and helpless. Yet Christ comes along and, although we don’t deserve his help, he lifts us out of death and brings us home. He restores us to God our father.

This great act of love, when rightly understood, creates a new normal in your heart and mind. You wont settle to see anyone hurting.

There is a spark in you driving you to where you must help those in need. As your heart becomes like Christ’s heart, you will look at someone hurting and see yourself, and you will have compassion. That compassion will act. True compassion always results in neighbor love.

What if neighbor love was the new normal in Charlotte? Does that sound too naïve to you?

Does it sound like a nice abstract thought that cannot result in real change?

I get it. In our upside-down world, it is hard to imagine people caring first for others instead of themselves. Aren’t we tired of that though? I want my African-American brothers and sisters to feel safe, even protected, during a traffic stop.

I want police officers to feel supported by their community. I want refugees to feel welcomed and orphans to feel hope. Protests awakened us to how far we have to go to get to a better normal. Perhaps neighbor love could be what sustains us and takes us there.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said about the story of the Samaritan “I imagine that the first question the priest and Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But by the very nature of his concern, the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”

I am still fairly new to this great city and would not presume to answer such deeply rooted problems with a simple platitude. I believe the gospel is far from simple and far from a platitude. I believe it reaches deeper into the reality of the human experience, and offers more hope for brokenness, than anything else.

Marvin Ridge soccer emerges as top team in conference

Weddington was viewed by many as the undisputed favorite going into the season in boys’ soccer, but Marvin Ridge didn’t let the outsider opinions keep it from upsetting the establishment. Now, the Mavericks are the team to beat at least in the Southern Carolinas, and Marvin Ridge’s league foes are chasing the target on its back.

Marvin Ridge (14-3, 6-0 Southern Carolinas) beat the Warriors, 5-4, at Weddington Oct. 5. The Mavericks are a half game ahead of the Warriors’ in the conference standings, and claim the head-to-head advantage if it comes down to that.

Marvin Ridge will host Weddington in its regular season finale Oct. 26. That game will likely decide the conference championship if both teams take care of business.

“I’ve got a pretty young group of guys with some talent,” Marvin Ridge coach Jason Zak said. “It’s fun seeing them get on the same page and understanding the system they’re playing.

From a coach’s perspective, there’s been a learning curve, but I think we’re starting to come around and play good soccer. It’s fun to see it all come together.

“I knew we had enough talent to make some noise. We’re under the radar, because we’re a young team. I’d lie if I said every year I don’t go in with the idea we can win the whole thing. It doesn’t matter how young we are or how old we

Wood qualified for the state tournament when she finished fifth overall in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A Midwest regional in Elkin with a nine-hole stroke average of 40.1.

are. I think there’s enough talent to where if every kid that’s able to play soccer in my school plays for me, we’d have a shot at states every year.”

Zak added the focus is beyond the conference for Marvin Ridge, which appears to be a legitimate state title contender. It’s definitely within the realm of possibility for this team, and the expectation to be at the top is supported by a rich history of success.

Marvin Ridge has won two state championships during the school’s 10 years of existence.

Zak guided the Mavericks to their most recent one in 2013.

Marvin Ridge excels at possessing the ball, but it must improve at attacking transition.

Senior Ryan Welsh, who can play anywhere, has been indispensable for the Mavericks. Junior Matt Ranshaw has been equally impactful.

Ranshaw goes back and forth from center mid to defense, and has helped to solidify things in the back.

The Mavericks still have room to grow, but this young team is just beginning to tap into its potential. A conference title would do wonders for its confidence as it prepares to make a deep run into the postseason and compete for the ultimate crown.

The road won’t be easy, but Marvin Ridge knows how to play under pressure. It overcame a 2-0 deficit against Cuthbertson to beat the Cavaliers, 3-2, in double overtime Sept. 21. The Mavericks appear to have what it takes to get the job done at the highest level when it matters the most.

Funderburke runs wild, Sun Valley rolls

ben@cmgweekly.com Sun Valley senior Fabrice Funderburke was settled in at cornerback, but coach Tad Baucom needed the veteran speedster to do double duty against Marvin Ridge Friday, Oct. 14. So, Funderburke returned to his old position, running back, in junior Ishod Finger’s stead, and he didn’t disappoint.

Funderburke used his sprinter speed to explode for 191 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, which was good for a first down per touch.

The Mavericks didn’t have an answer for him, as the Spartans (7-1, 2-0 Southern Carolinas) cruised to a 47-38 win and a share of the top spot in the conference standings with Weddington (5-3, 2-0 Southern Carolinas).

execution have been issues on offense. The post-Austin Kendall era at quarterback has gone as expected. He’s irreplaceable. Coach David Johnson has used three guys to try to fill that void.

If senior P.J. Papadopulos, junior Chase Eighmy or sophomore Davis Walker can manage to find a way to get into an effective rhythm throwing the football, that would do wonders for Cuthbertson’s offense, because senior J.T. Cauthen and Casey Stamper are as good or better than any tandem of receivers in Union County.

Cuthbertson has only broken the 20-point barrier four times this season. No one wants to panic, but the Cavaliers must figure out something on offense quickly or they will be watching the playoffs from the stands. Friday’s trip to Anson won’t be easy, but it’s as good as any opportunity

Cuthbertson will get to change the trajectory of its season after losing three straight.

Monroe has encountered much adversity this season. The Redhawks lost several key contributors from last season’s state championship team and senior quarterback Zephaniah Wall (a four-year starter) went down with an injury, but coach Johnny Sowell’s bunch has pressed on. Now, Monroe (6-2, 2-0 Rocky River 2A) appears to be ready to win its second consecutive conference title.

The Redhawks have meetings with an upand-down Parkwood (5-3, 1-1 Rocky River 2A) team, a major obstacle in West Stanly (6-2, 2-0 Rocky River 2A) and winless Forest Hills left remaining on their schedule. A visit from the Colts Friday, Oct. 28 will likely decide the conference championship.

Marvin Ridge volleyball reigns supreme in Southern Carolinas

Marvin Ridge’s volleyball team (23-3, 10-0 Southern Carolinas) secured its seventh consecutive conference championship with another perfect run through league play. The Mavericks haven’t lost a Southern Carolinas match since it fell to Weddington in the conference tournament four years ago.

None of the players on Marvin Ridge’s roster know what it feels like to lose to a league foe.

Marvin Ridge coach Brook Hammers said her team is a cohesive group. The girls work hard and work well together, making Hammers’ job much easier.

“The last couple of years, I’ve been able to have successful teams, because the talent of the girls that have come to my program,” Hammers said.

This might be the most talented team Hammers has fielded in several years. It has proven what it’s capable of after running over most of its competition during the regular season. She expects the Mavs will get a top three seed in the state playoffs, which will give them home court advantage in the early rounds. Hammers said Cox Mill and West Henderson deserve to be ahead of Marvin Ridge after the Mavericks’ only losses came to those teams.

Marvin Ridge has improved at blocking,

which helps it defensively and offensively. Hammers said that could be the difference in the Mavericks getting over the hump in their quest for a state title.

“Defense wins games,” Hammers said. “I’ve got girls that can hit the ball and put the ball down, but if I don’t have girls that can come in and get the ball up from an opponent it’s not going to do us any good. So, I think defense is something we’ve really focused on this year, and it’s something that has definitely picked up since last year.”

Junior middle blocker/middle hitter Caitlyn Kiker, junior outside hitter Carly Owens, sophomore setter Adriana Jordan and junior libero Noelle Soldo are playing at a high level for Marvin Ridge. The Mavericks will need those girls along with several other players to continue their stellar play if they hope to compete for a state championship.

Forest Hills’ boys’ soccer team (15-4, 6-1) is at the top of the Rocky River 2A Conference standings, but CATA (11-7-3, 5-2), which is tied for second place with Monroe (11-5-1, 5-2), is closing the gap. All three teams have three games remaining, and the Yellow Jackets have the toughest road of the group, with trips to CATA Monday, Oct. 24 and Monroe Wednesday, Oct. 26. If the Cougars win out, they will claim at least a share of the conference title, which will be the program’s fifth straight league championship.

“Our philosophy has been to play a really tough nonconference schedule and hopefully use that to pay off during conference play,” CATA coach Jay Niessner said. “I think we played one of the toughest schedules for any 2A team in the entire state. We had some games get away from us, but we really used that to build on to what we’ve done and carry it into conference.

“I think it really gets a team ready for the postseason. There’s really no situation we haven’t been in during the year. We’ve had games where we were up against teams and we let the lead get away. We had games where we were down and we came back. We’ve gotten blown out. We’ve blown people out. It’s

good to put the kids through a little adversity. You learn from it.”

CATA has 12 seniors, and up to seven can start, depending on the situation. Niessner has an experienced and talented lineup at his disposal.

This is Niessner’s eighth season at the helm, and his fourth year as the school’s athletics director. He has guided the program to four of its seven conference championships.

Senior goalkeeper Brandon Melchor, a three-year starter, gives the Cougars stability and someone who does a good job denying opponents’ shots. Senior center back Clark Appling is an exceptional defender, and provides key leadership as a team captain.

Senior captain Trevor Weimer gives CATA a versatile weapon with his ability to play outside back, forward and midfield. He goes wherever Niessner feels the need is greatest.

Senior captain Joey Ridge mans the central mid spot, while senior Roberto Flemming makes a significant impact from his outside mid and forward spots with his ability to score. That rounds out CATA’s core nucleus, which is complemented by a good stable of role players.

CATA’s highlights thus far include a 3-3 tie with 3A power Cox Mill, a scoreless tie with defending state champion Salisbury, a 3-2 win over Lake Norman Charter and most recently, a 2-1 win over Monroe.

Boys Athlete of the Week: Girls Athlete of the Week: Dimitri Lavin Marvin Ridge Sarah Merrill Weddington Marvin Ridge junior soccer player Dimitri Lavin is quite the distributor, and has a knack for creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. In fact, he dished out three assists in the Mavericks’ 5-4, win over rival Weddington Wednesday, Oct. 5. His performance was key in helping Marvin Ridge get a critical win over the Warriors, as the Mavs fight for the Southern Carolinas Conference championship.

Weddington sophomore tennis player Sarah Merrill is having quite the season, and has excelled against some of the top players in the state. She defeated Charlotte Catholic’s No. 1 player Rachel Marthinsen in three sets (6-2, 0-6, 10-7) Wednesday, Oct. 5, and beat Marvin Ridge’s No. 1 player Ella Imhof for the second time this season Thursday, Oct. 6. Merrill dropped the first set, 6-0, but recovered to win 6-4 and 10-7.
