Real estate 2017: Still looking good Allen Tate CEO says market will continue to improve CHARLOTTE – Wonder what’s in store for the Carolinas’ real estate market for 2017?

No major changes, but that’s a good thing, according to the experts.

In 2016, Allen Tate Company ended the year with 22,194 closed sales units and $5.45 billion in closed sales volume, a respectable increase over 21,565 closed units and $5.16 billion in closed volume in 2015.

That’s a trend Allen Tate President and CEO Pat Riley is comfortable with – the kind of steady growth that helps normalize and sustain the market.

In the January-February edition of Carolinas Market Update, Riley talks about factors that helped define the past two years – and are expected to continue in 2017.

“Low inventory will propel higher than average price appreciation (5-6 percent).

Builders will be picking up the pace (but with a higher price tag), and both Millennials and Baby Boomers will still be taking their time buying and downsizing,” Riley said.

What could be different are interest rates.

While they saw a modest creep in 2016, a climb of 2 percent off the bottom could be a reality in 2017.

buyers into action, we’re not sure what impact this will have, considering 80 percent of current homeowners have an interest rate under 4 percent,” said Riley Riley.

The Carolinas will remain the benefactors of in-migration, with people moving here for climate, quality of life, great medical facilities and higher education, and family.

Homes in good condition that have been updated and are priced right for the market will sell for the best price and in the shortest amount of time, Riley said.

“I cannot stress enough that dated homes will be passed by, even if buyer interest is high and inventory is low,” Riley said.

“That’s true of every market.”

Lawmaker passionately explains school choice

I

attended a town hall meeting in Ballantyne a few Saturday mornings ago when N.C. Rep. Bill Brawley was handed the microphone.

Justin Vick “Prepare to be here until 5 o’clock,” chimed a longtime political figure at my table.

But Brawley delivered a passionate explanation of why he believes in school choice.

He recounted how his wife went head-to-head with a principal over a teacher.

“Mrs. Brawley, I’m not going to make you happy,” the principal told his wife. “Feel free to take your daughter out of this school and put her in any school you want.”

Charter schools didn’t exist in Matthews or Mint Hill then. Private school was expensive.

“My daughter, who is in her twenties, still suffers from the loss of an entire year of education,” Brawley said. “I never want a parent in this room to be told, ‘Feel free to take your child out of this school and put them in any school you want,’ and not have the ability to do that. The impact on school choice on public education is to make it better.”

Brawley took the mic because someone asked him and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Ann Clark what they thought about the possibility of tax dollars funding private or Christian education.

Clark gave a very dull, academic answer, which mostly consisted of how CMS is funded. Brawley, on the other hand, gave CMS a wakeup call.

While Brawley noted how the N.C. General Assembly has increased funding of public schools year after year, he also talked about his sworn constitutional duty to provide quality education for every student in North Carolina. Quality education – not public education.

“I will buy quality education for the children of North Carolina from anybody who is selling it because that is what we need,” Brawley said, with Clark over his shoulder.

I bring this up as the Mayoral Task Force on Education received some TV mentions this week. Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor formed the task force because his constituents were concerned that their children wouldn’t be attending a school near their neighborhoods.

The task force has discussed options, ranging from the town creating a school district to breaking CMS into smaller chunks. The Charlotte Observer mentioned this week on a new possibility – launching a campus of charter schools.

Regardless of the recommendation the task force presents to Matthews commissioners, I would characterize the task force as a success – even if the status quo continues.

The task force’s mere presence puts increased pressure on CMS to pay attention to the people of Matthews when considering redistricting and building new schools.

News Briefs Hawthorne Drive may become no-parking zone MINT HILL – Town commissioners are expected to prohibit on-street parking on Hawthorne Drive during their Thursday, Feb. 9, meeting.

Hawthorne Drive is a small loop, between Matthews-Mint Hill Road and Brighton Park Road.

Those three roads surround the Zaxby’s restaurant.

The measure, requested by town public safety officials, is listed on the commission’s consent agenda, which includes non-controversial items approved as a group.

“This past year, we brought in a bounce house and changed the movie theme because time the movies are shown is too late for the targeted audience,” Smith wrote in a Feb. 3 memo to town commissioners. “While we did have some people take advantage, the attendance at these events was rather bleak.”

The town spends close to $10,000, excluding overtime, for these May and June events, Smith added.

Museum exhibit celebrates 100 years of American Red Cross MATTHEWS – The Matthews Heritage Museum is showcasing a new exhibit, “A Century of Helping Hands,” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Red Cross in Mecklenburg County.

Many Red Cross chapters formed in 1917 to serve soldiers in World War I. Locally, the Red Cross served soldiers at Camp Greene, helping find housing for visiting girlfriends and provide several nurses for Camp Greene.

Firm gives away million-dollar smiles

MATTHEWS – Raising a child can be expensive, especially when it comes to paying for dental work. For families who cannot afford it, seeing their children feel embarrassed by their teeth is painful for all involved.

That is where Starr & Dickens Orthodontics comes in.

For patients, such as 15-year-old Mykia White, addressing orthodontic needs became pressing when students began bullying her over the appearance of her teeth. A Union County Health Department representative told her mother, Janicia, about a program offered by Starr & Dickens Orthodontics.

Every six months, the company chooses a group of patients to receive free treatment from applications submitted by parents whose children's dental health is negatively affecting their self-esteem. The process is laid out by supporting organization Smiles For a Lifetime Foundation. The application includes a few short essay questions and two letters of recommendation.

Mint Hill supports Rocky River’s effort for CTE month

MINT HILL – Rocky River High School wants to help students find their career paths through its celebration of Career and Technical Education Month.

“CTE is really about all students,” said Susan Gann-Carroll, CTE director for CharlotteMecklenburg Schools. “Every student, no matter what background they’re from, can benefit from understanding a little bit more about what is happening in the career world and also what opportunities are available at the high school level to really begin on their career path.”

The district wants to open up opportunities for students to obtain industry credentials, which can give students an advantage when entering the workforce after high school.

“CTE Month is really a vehicle where we can tell that story from the mountaintops at as many levels as possible,” Gann-Carroll said. “A lot of times, you’ll find those of us who teach and work in it, we’re the ones that think everyone knows about it but (we realize) everyone else doesn’t know about it.”

Rocky River will participate in various activities to get students involved in exploring the school’s CTE options and career paths.

“The students need to be engaged in some hands-on activity that will spur their initiative to grasp a career,” Career Development Coordinator Elaine Friar said.

Friar helps juniors and seniors attend courses at Central Piedmont Community College, which has 57 career and technical education pathways.

The school hasn’t hosted events to celebrate CTE Month specifically in the past, Friar said, but she felt inspired to coordinate school events after former Gov. Pat McCrory dubbed November Career Development Month. She wanted “to take it to the next level” in February, which the state has designated as “CTE Month.”

Rocky River will host CTE-related “Future Raven Ready Ravens” events throughout the month,

including “Dress for Success” days each Friday, career door decorating contests, Explorers surveys, social media blitzes, field trips and a guest panel.

Mint Hill also supported Friar Rocky River’s efforts to celebrate CTE Month, including Mayor Ted Biggers signing a proclamation making February "Career and Technical Education Month" in the town.

The proclamation was presented Feb. 1 to the school in a ceremony.

“Mint Hill obviously wants to support continued technical education because that’s where the job growth is,” Mint Hill Deputy Town Manager Lee Bailey said.

Bailey explained the roundabout at Allen Station Drive and Clear Creek Commerce Drive is zoned for railroad industry, which could pave the way for industrial manufacturing, storage and warehousing.

“It’s in our best interest to support any kind of career aptitude and career readiness because if we have industries here, we want to have people that can fill the jobs,” he said.

Gann-Carroll said she recognizes three trends in today’s job market, which revolve around healthcare, advanced manufacturing and information technology.

The CMS CTE department is looking into “pathways” at each high school and developing those pathways into a four-course sequence that can lead toward careers that are much needed in today’s market. CMS wants to lead students’ interests toward what’s needed in the job market.

“They all have a purpose in the workforce,” Gann-Carroll said.

Friar said Rocky River has many students involved in CTE and CPCC courses, but she wants to encourage more students to participate.

“The major focus is credentialing at all the high schools,” Friar said, noting the idea is for students to earn credentials so they can get jobs after graduation. “Not everyone needs a fouryear degree to be successful.”

“Our kids are just not mature enough to handle the power of these devices, and most parents are unequipped on how to deal with it.” Hempe said.

A funny thing happened on the way to the reunion

They would often be found working at 4 a.m. on a sewing project that was due the next day. I learned to smile. Marciano We are family.

You remember the play, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum?� My story is different. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Family Reunion the Day After the Wedding.�

My daughter was married near Greensboro on a Saturday. We decided (OK, I decided) to have a family reunion in my backyard the next day. There would not be time to cook, so we ordered barbecue for my New Jersey family. We had to be on the road from Greensboro by 9 a.m. to arrive home, get things set up, greet the caterer, set up the food and greet the guests who were scheduled to arrive at 12:30.

As we left the hotel, and my wife and I were driving south on I-85, a funny thing happened on the way to the family reunion. I was no longer in my late 50s. I was 24 years old. I wasn’t driving a Ford Escape. I was driving my college car. Suddenly, it hit me. It was just the two of us again, just like it was when we first started dating.

MATTHEWS – Bright Blessings will host its second annual Bless-a-Baby Shower, giving the community an opportunity to learn about the increasing number of babies born into homelessness and poverty.

The charity served more than 540 babies last year. “It is hard for most of us to imagine bringing a child into the world with no stable home and very little, if any, baby care supplies,� Executive Director Amy Cervantes said. “Our goal is to ensure each little life we serve is welcomed and supported with the care and love they deserve, and that each mother experiences joy and feels a sense of hope even in the midst of such difficult circumstances.�

Amy and her husband, John, started Bright Blessings in 2005 to brighten the lives of needy children through birthday celebrations. They serve more than 8,000 homeless and impoverished children annually.

The family-friendly open house-style event takes place 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1150 Crews Road, suite C. It will include tours of The Giving Village, service projects, raffles and music by K-LOVE 91.9.

Guests are encouraged to bring newborn and size 1 diapers, diaper ointment, baby wash and lotion, hooded towels and bottles to place in baskets for the charity’s Bless-A-Baby program.

Valentine’s Day is when we think of love and cupids and red hearts – or at least some of us do. But if you’re a guy, you hope you remember to bring home some flowers.

You also hope she doesn’t notice you didn’t bring home a card. Either way, you’re in the doghouse.

Marriage has a natural drift. It moves from intimacy to isolation. You can’t tell that to a couple who is engaged. After marriage, life, career and child-raising take over. You bring home this wonderful bundle of joy who two years later is saying “No� with both hands on their hips. You get a reprieve between ages 4 and 12 when they think you walk on water. After that, you sink.

I loved raising my kids. I had a blast.

We had one television. We also had basic cable. My bill was under $10 per month.

With limited channels, we learned to disagree (OK, fight) over what we were going to watch. Maria always got there first and we watched figure skating. I learned to like it or else.

As my daughter got older and learned to be a seamstress, she took more and more of my wife’s time. As Maria’s sewing

I never realized how much time the kids took of my wife. Since my love language is time, I want to spend it with my wife. The many sewing projects and preparation for the wedding took my wife away from me for quite a bit of time. While I “learned to smile,� I wasn’t happy about it.

It was driving down I-85 when I realized we were returning to the first chapter of our life. Some people panic over that.

I will confess, we didn’t get away for long weekends just by ourselves. This moment was different. It was more than just the two of us alone. We weren’t listening to the Carpenters sing, “We’ve Only Just Begun.�

Instead, we had 35 years of marriage and many life lessons behind us. Now, we could enjoy each other in ways that we didn’t understand when we were newly married.

No, we don’t have grandchildren, at least not yet. No rush. I am thoroughly enjoying this new season of my life.

I’ll be back in a few weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

Technology enhances ‘Oz’ performance

MATTHEWS – Covenant Day School plans to put a modern twist on a classic story in its production of “Wizard of Oz” this week.

CDS will be one of the first area high schools to completely use digital animated projections as the backdrop for its musical.

Faculty Director Barbara Chase said they were necessary, as CDS has a small stage without any wings and “Oz” has more than 20 scenes – many which drastically differ from one another. Many of the projections have moving parts, which she believes will add to the “movie at the theater” vibe.

“To stage something like that is a director’s challenge,” Chase said. “So, our thought was to make our sets look like what’s in the screen, and let’s give our audience a chance to look at backdrops that move like a movie.”

CDS had to buy special projectors to use the rented projections. Chase hopes to use the technology in the future.

“I see us trying to find different ways to incorporate (technology) in all different areas of the arts program – whether it be visual arts, the music (or) with our band and choral programs,” Fine Arts Director Sherie Beth Wilson said.

However, Wilson doesn’t want the technology to overshadow the students and the play’s message.

Patriots pose big test for Bulldogs

It has been nearly a month since Butler beat Independence 76-69, and both teams are still among the top teams in the state. Friday’s 7:30 p.m. tilt is just as big if not bigger than the last meeting. The Bulldogs have locked up at least a share of the Southwestern 4A Conference regular season championship, but a sweep of the Patriots would win it outright. On the other hand, Independence will win a share of the league title if it beats Butler.

Much has gone right for Butler (23-0, 11-0 Southwestern 4A) this season, and for Independence (19-4, 10-1 Southwestern 4A, too.

For someone to finally upend the Bulldogs it’s going to take a near perfect night. I’m not saying Independence is or will be that team, but the Patriots have the pieces to do it.

In the first meeting between Butler and Independence the Bulldogs struggled to defend without fouling. They put Independence on the charity stripe 31 times, and the Patriots made 77 percent of their free-throw attempts. If this continues to be an issue for Butler, then Independence could make the Bulldogs pay again and the price could be even greater, especially in such a hostile environment.

Hamilton, holding him to six points and seven rebounds when he almost averages a doubledouble (12.4 ppg and 9.4 rpg). Forward Victor Tshiona also must play a bigger role. Independence has to match Butler’s aggression, while playing within itself.

Gates emerged with a double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds) that night. He has been a load for opponents in the paint. The Patriots can’t afford to let him go off. Butler has a slew of weapons in its arsenal with wing Zane Rankin, Omega Stitt, D.J. Little and a litany of others.

Throw the records out the window for this rivalry game, because they won’t matter once the ball is tipped.

Rocky River is in the market for a new football coach.

This is unfamiliar territory for the school, because Jason Fowler has been at the helm since Rocky River opened its doors seven years ago.

Fowler, who also was Rocky River’s dean of students, was one of the school’s original eight employees. He accepted an offer to become the next football coach at Olympic.

He built the Ravens’ program from the ground up, and made into a competitor. Fowler, who guided Rocky River to a 4-7 (2-4 Southwestern 4A) record last season, went 38-45 during his tenure, which included three playoff three appearances and a conference championship in 2013.

“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about Coach Fowler,” Rocky River athletics director Jonathan Lamb said. “He did a wonderful job both with our football team and leading them on the field and off the field.”

“He’s been a wonderful leader in the school and community. He’s done nothing, but represented us well. I’m very grateful for the time, effort and energy he gave to Rocky River. I wish him the best, as he moves on to Olympic.”

Lamb said he and Rocky River principal Ericia Turner are in the process of finalizing a coaching search committee led by the two of them. The committee also will include coaches, other members of the school’s faculty, student athletes and parents.

Rocky River is receiving strong interest in the job. Lamb believes the school has already received in the neighborhood of about 40 resumes, and he expects to receive more.

Lamb hopes to have Fowler’s successor in place by early March since the state’s dead period goes into the beginning of April. That would give the next head coach a month to assemble a coaching staff and put a plan together for spring workouts.

However, Lamb added Rocky River can’t tie itself to that timeline.

From a logistical standpoint, Lamb said an ideal candidate would be someone who has a teaching certificate, enabling them along with some of the coaching staff to be around kids all day. That helps to create a support network in the school.

“In terms of going a little bit deeper, you’d want someone who has got a balance between an in-depth football knowledge and who also places an emphasis on character and grooming young men to become responsible adults,” Lamb said.

Area schools celebrate signing day

Signing Day has taken on the excitement of a national holiday across the country. Matthews and Mint Hill are no exception.

Several schools had student athletes put pen to paper to cement their spot at the college level Wednesday, Feb. 1, as they seek to further their academic and athletic careers.

Butler had a slew of student athletes ink with colleges. Christian Dixon signed a national letter of intent with Towson for football, while Davis Cheek signed a national letter of intent with Elon for football. Madeline Boles will continue her lacrosse career at Mars Hill. Baseball player T.J. McEvilly will attend Southern Wesleyan.

Jake Getty will join the lacrosse program at Brevard.

George Espina will play soccer Belmont Abbey. Erin Hundley signed with South Carolina State for volleyball.

Dirk Cureton will take his football talents to Presbyterian, while Kusegi Cureton inked with Lenoir-Rhyne for football and Nejuan Worthy will join the football program at Highland Community College in Kansas.

Independence’s Logan Brock (Wingate) and Xavier Lenear (North Carolina Central University) will continue their football careers at the collegiate level. Cooper Fandel will play baseball at King University.

Glodi Elofa, Xavier Ramsey and Tiffany Reed all signed with Lane College for track & field.

Rocky River’s Tyrek Haywood (Campbell), Kendall Lewis (Wingate), Tyshawn Carter (UNC Pembroke), Phillip Clay (Limestone College) and Elijah Henry (Charleston Southern) all signed to play football at the next level.

Ariana Nance will join Elon’s women’s basketball program.

Carmel Christian hit a homerun when it hired Terry Brewer to be its baseball coach near the end of last month.

The Cougars’ new skipper brings a wealth of experience to a program that has made considerable strides in recent years, including last season’s conference tournament championship appearance and 14-7 (7-1 Southern Piedmont) finish.

The Bulldogs are only a win away from completing an undefeated regular season before moving on to the conference tournament and postseason play. Independence will be a significant obstacle for Butler on Friday, Feb. 10.

Don’t ask a current Charger what it feels like to lose a conference game. He doesn’t know. Providence Day hasn’t lost to a CISAA during league action since 2013, and the streak should continue for another year.

The Patriots hope to play spoiler to Butler’s dreams for an undefeated season. A win over the Bulldogs will secure a share of the conference regular season title for Independence.

“He seems like a great guy who knows a lot about baseball, knows a lot about working with kids,” Carmel Christian athletics director Grant Coffey said. “He’s a little bit of the old school, but baseball’s not changed too much. He focuses on the fundamentals of throwing, catching, hitting and running.”

Brewer is known for having the ability to break down a skill in teachable elements that helps players learn how to be more efficient at what they’re doing.

Coffey said Brewer has met the players, and there have already been

some voluntary workouts. Coffey said the kids seemed to be excited and anxious for the season to start.

“We want him to come teach these guys about baseball, but also pour into them his experiences in life and the hope is we’re trying to turn boys into men,” Coffey said. “We’re trying to turn boys into godly men.

“We are as excited about who he is as a person as we are about what he knows about baseball. That’s a big part of what we look for. We’re not the only school that looks for that, but that’s a big part of what we look at, too. Coaches are teaching more than just the sport they’re teaching, so we want to put good people in the lives of our kids.

If Butler can beat Independence Friday, Feb. 10 and win its conference tournament, the Bulldogs might be able to earn a top four seed or home court advantage for at least a couple of playoff games.

The Knights still claim the top spot in the So. Meck 8 standings with a one-game advantage despite another loss to second place Berry. Ardrey Kell must win out if it hopes to lock up the regular season conference title.

It will be interesting to see how beneficial Rocky River’s off-week is to the Ravens, but it gives them an opportunity to rest, get healthy and work on things before the postseason arrives.

Myers Park won two out of its three games following its loss at Butler, but a 24-point drubbing at the hands of Mallard Creek on Feb. 1 shows the Mustangs still have plenty of work to do.

South Meck is one of the hottest teams in the area. The Sabres can secure at least a share of the So. Meck 8 regular season conference title if they win out.

The Cougars maintained a perfect record through conference play. Coach Ashley McGuirt’s team isn’t done. Carmel Christian has shown it has what it takes to possibly shake things up at the state level.
