CMS ready to build on momentum

CHARLOTTE – Superintendent Clayton Wilcox considered the first day of the 2017-18 academic year to be a success but he stopped short of grading his district’s performance.

“I’m somebody who thinks schools are more than a letter grade,” Wilcox said Aug. 28. “To reduce us to one letter grade minimizes the effect that so many of us put into this.”

Wilcox does, however, believe in continuous improvement.

He believes transporting students to and from school will get better, as the district tightens up its 1,078 bus routes. Early reports of buses leaving campuses have been positive, though hiccups will occur over the first week to 10 days, he said.

“We had a heavier concentration of drivers that came onto our campuses today, which really slowed some of our buses down,” Wilcox said.

Some parents didn’t know that bus loops were for buses or cut through car lines.

The district also has seen higher-thananticipated enrollment in the northern and southern parts of the county, particularly at 11th and 12th grades.

“We’re not quite sure at this moment what that really means,” Wilcox said. “Right now we are not prepared to say that we have staffing adjustments to make, but we are simply watching very carefully the numbers.”

One of the priorities heading into the first week of school was ensuring campuses were well-maintained and school buildings were clean. Wilcox noted how the district received criticism before his arrival about the upkeep of facilities.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools opened its full complement of 176 schools to 148,000 students, according to Chief of Staff Laura Francisco.

The district still had 48.5 teacher vacancies and 28 bus driver vacancies on the first day of school, she said.

Wilcox noticed how some schools had more community engagement than others.

One school had a faith-based group and dads high-fiving and fist-bumping students as they arrived.

As superintendent of CMS’s East Learning Community, Nancy Brightwell represents 23,000 students, including those in Matthews and Mint Hill schools.

Her leadership team visited all 28 schools on the first day, including the new JT Williams Secondary Montessori School.

“All of our schools had a very smooth opening,” Brightwell said.

Beyond the first week, Wilcox wants to move from getting to know students to sharing deeper and higher levels of thinking and instruction.

“We had a really good day – a great opening,” Wilcox said. “Now our task is to repeat that each and every day for the balance of the school year.”

Levine Foundation donates to Communities In Schools

The Levines have focused much of their support on nonprofits that help low-income people and struggling families in a myriad of ways, with the majority of grants staying within the Charlotte community.

“Howard Levine’s foundational gift speaks to his commitment to economic mobility and future generations,” Shaw said. “His support is instrumental to helping expand and complement our work.”

CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg is an affiliate of the national Communities In Schools network and is dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life.

Locally, CIS-Charlotte provides case management services to 6,000-plus students annually in 45 schools. An additional 28,000 students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg are supported by CIS each year through programming and volunteer resources.

Family Dollar aids Dollar Tree’s bottom line

Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser said in a statement. “Both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar produced positive same-store sales, our enterprise operating margin improved 80 basis points and earnings per share exceeded the high end of our guidance range. CHARLOTTE – The Howard R. Levine Foundation announced Aug. 29 it will give $500,000 over five years to Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to launch the agency’s Crisis Care Initiative.

The initiative will deploy “intensive case managers” in schools to provide wraparound services for students experiencing severe circumstances and trauma.

“This generous gift means that our most vulnerable students will receive the deepest level of support from CIS intensive case managers,” said Molly Shaw, CIS-Charlotte executive director. “Students and families in crisis need immediate stabilization support as well as deeper interventions to ensure they can navigate systems and create new cycles of generational success,” The agency will have three intensive case managers this year at three CMS schools. The goal of the Crisis Care Initiative is to expand the number of intensive case managers to serve as many as 10 schools by the year 2020.

My name is Karie Simmons and I recently took on the role of news editor at Charlotte Media Group.

I wanted to introduce myself since I’m new here in the Queen City, so here’s a little about me: I was born in Virginia, grew up in Connecticut, attended college at Karie Simmons the University of Delaware and spent the past four years working as a reporter/assistant editor for the Newark Post in Newark, Del. Being a journalist is hands down one of the best jobs, and I often catch myself wondering how I got so lucky that I get paid to do this. As a reporter in Delaware, I saw how ice cream is made at a creamery, attended aerospace camp, toured a nano lab, went behind the scenes of a 911 call center, rode in a garbage truck, watched buildings get demolished, interviewed former Vice President Joe Biden, played with a therapy rabbit, walked on a green roof and wore a beekeeping suit to take pictures of honeybee hives – all moments that made my friends and family extremely jealous.

People often tell me, “Your job is so cool,” and I can’t help but smile because it really, really is.

Now that I’m here, I don’t plan on the fun stopping anytime soon. I come from a strong community newspaper with a rich history, so I’ve learned how to develop trust and I know what it means to truly care about your cover-

Butler gearing up for Bulldog Pride Day

Butler High School is calling for all hands on deck. That includes faculty, students and volunteers from the community to join forces on Bulldog Pride Day, a campus beautification project sponsored by the Butler Athletic Booster Club.

It will take place Sept. 9 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Folks are asked to meet at the football stadium behind the school.

The response from the school and community has been strong.

Butler student-athletes, coaches, Student Government Association, ROTC and National Honor Society, other clubs and folks from the community have jumped on board.

Companies and members of the community have shown interest in donating water and yard equipment.

I want to shine a light on the people, places and traditions that make this area so unique and remind you, in case you forgot, why on Earth someone would pack everything they own into their car and drive 507 miles from Delaware to start a new adventure here.

No, I’m not a native of this area, but I believe you can plant your roots wherever you want to grow and, for me, that’s Charlotte.

I couldn’t be more excited to call this place home – a booming city with a lively atmosphere, great people and tons of potential – and I look forward to showing you who I am and what I can do.

I’m firmly planted here, Matthews and Mint Hill, so let’s grow together.

We’re going to be doing anything from power washing to painting, cutting back weeds, re-mulching areas, cleaning the bleachers in each of the outside venues and inside the gym, as well.

“There’s a lot of us that have really wanted a lot done for the school and to help the coaches and athletics director and make things easier for them.”

The Butler Athletic Booster Club is in need of supplies and yard equipment for this project. For example, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, wheelbarrows, work disposable gloves, mulch, rakes and giftcards to Lowe’s, Home Depot or Pike’s Nursery are all useful items. Or, if folks are willing to let the Butler Athletic Booster Club borrow yard equipment that also would be helpful.

I’m fired up over (fill in the blank)

Sometimes I’ll get calls from people who are angry about something, but they don’t feel comfortable with their name being associated with any story.

Other times, someone will email me a juicy letter to the editor only to beg me a few days later not to publish it.

People worry their opinions will come back to bite Justin Vick them personally or professionally. I have a solution to this problem.

Introducing “Fired Up,” an anonymous forum in which people can hash out their concerns and frustrations.

Did someone flip you off on I-485? Did a neighbor’s dog leave poop in your yard? Did a politician in Raleigh or Washington, D.C. say something that was out of line?

If you said yes to any of these questions, then you must ball up this paper, storm to your computer and pound your keyboard to create a sassy submission.

Limit your submissions to 50 words or less. I won’t publish mean things against individuals or companies, as well as anything racist, homophobic or misogynist.

Need some inspiration? Here are a few of my latest pet peeves: • Why do people next in line at the gas station stand several feet away from the

counter? You should only do this if you smell bad. I’ve started jumping in front of them. If they say anything, I’ll say, “Oops.

Didn’t think you were in line.”

• Yes, you need a microphone. No you’re voice is not loud enough for everyone in the room to hear you. That is why you have been provided a microphone.

• I’m going to create an Employee of the Week Award. Then I’m going to declare myself the winner each week, so I can use my platform to deliver a series of acceptance speeches with political undertones. I will change lives like on the MTV VMAs. Road tour joins Matthews Auto Reunion on Labor Day MATTHEWS – Street Rodder Magazine will make a pit stop at the 27th annual Auto Reunion & Motorcycle Show.

The show will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept.

The 2017 ARP/Street Rodder Road Tour has 10 week-long tours across the United States with more than 400 registered participants.

The Matthews Chamber Annual Auto Show has about 150 participants yearly and expects even more participation this year.

“This event is combined on the last day of the Matthews Alive Festival, so we get great energy and traffic at this event,” said Kelly Barnhardt, executive director of the Matthews Chamber of Commerce. “We are thrilled that Street Rodder Magazine chose us as one of their stops on the tour this year.”

Matthews Alive could see rain MATTHEWS – The National Weather Service has reported likely showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Sept. 1, which happens to be opening night for the 25th anniversary celebration of Matthews Alive.

The NWS reports a 40 percent chance of showers after 11 a.m. Sept. 2 and 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sept. 3. Labor Day will be partly sunny.

“We won’t make a decision about how weather will impact the festival until we get closer to the festival,” organizers told Facebook followers Aug 28. “Right now, everything goes on as planned, rain or shine.”

Organizers always hope for sunshine as the event raises money for local charities.

The festival features food, arts, crafts, rides and entertainment in a carnival-like atmosphere. Highlights from the four-day celebration are as follows: • Sept. 1 – Performances by Carolina Soul (6:30 to 8 p.m.) and Chairmen of the Board

(8:30 to 10 p.m.).

• Sept. 2 – Matthews Alive Parade (10:30 a.m.), pop and rock bands (1:30 to 7 p.m.), The Purple Xperience concert (7:30 to 9 p.m.) and fireworks (10 p.m.)

• Sept. 3 – Performances by country music legend Sammy Kershaw (7:30 to 9 p.m.) and country rock and harmonies (1:30 to 7 p.m.).

• Sept. 4 – Dance party (11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

The festival runs 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 1, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 2, noon to 9 p.m. Sept. 3 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 4 in downtown Matthews.

South Trade Street, from John to McDowell streets, will be closed from 9 a.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Monday. Several roads may be closed through noon Saturday for the Matthews Alive Parade.

Matthews accepting applications for tourism grants MATTHEWS – The Town of Matthews is offering a tourism grant designed to provide financial assistance to nonprofits that deliver programs or events promoting tourism.

The grant is funded through hotel occupancy and prepared food/beverage taxes.

Do’s and don’ts of falling back into fitness for moms

Whoever coined the term “summer vacation,” obviously wasn’t a mom. Without question, summertime is one of the busiest times of the year for moms. Because, let’s be honest, we’re constantly sidetracked by vacations, schedule changes, family commitments, summer camps and the like.

So, as the travel season winds down and the kids head back to school, autumn presents a great and important opportunity to begin, resume or tighten-up good health habits. After all, the most difficult time of the year (the holidays) will be here before we know it.

Here are some do’s and don’ts from a fellow mom (and personal trainer) looking to get back into the fitness groove this fall:

3. Don’t repeat yourself.

Getting my kids to listen the first time every time is a fantasy of mine. But, this piece of advice doesn’t pertain to that impossible challenge. Instead, I’m talking about exercising some basic control over meal prep. Put simply: Don’t repeat tasks.

When you are busy packing lunch and filling water bottles for everyone in the family, don’t forget that you are part of the family, too! You already have the supplies out, and you will already need to clean up. Don’t double your workload – make your lunch in

advance, as well.

If you’re prone to neglect yourself, then prep your lunch first – not last. If momma is hungry and upset with her nutrition, everyone else pays the price!

Work from home? You’re not off the hook.

Put your lunch on a plate or in a bowl so you don’t end up eating Cheez-Its, M&M’s and your self-esteem every hour on the hour until dinner.

2. Do buy for the family – not “for the kids.”

Whether you choose to admit it, you and your spouse will also be eating the chips purchased “for the kids” to pack in their school lunches. In reality, there is no such thing as food “for the kids,” because everyone in the household is going to end up eating everything.

Having healthy parents is far more important than ensuring your kids have their every desire indulged. We know for a fact that bodyfat levels are crucial for long-term health.

Furthermore, the childhood obesity epidemic is real. We live in an environment where our kids have non-stop access to unlimited quantities of high-calorie, highreward food. They don’t need temptation at home anymore than you do.

Will they complain? Of course! But children cry and complain about everything and (especially) nothing. Nobody can stop children from crying or being upset, but one of

the best ways we can help them (and their parents) eat better is by changing what’s available in the house.

1. Don’t roll your eyes at this.

Put yourself first. Yes, you’ve heard this 1,000 times. But, hearing it does not necessarily equate to action.

Self-care is incredibly difficult for moms of any age, but it’s also the greatest gift they can give to themselves and their families.

I get three hours a day of childcare. This is all the time I have to do work and workout. When I opened a personal training gym with my husband last year, I would start this window of time by working – with the intent to finish it with a workout. However, after three months, I was averaging half a workout once a week.

My husband made the crazy suggestion to put my own workout before work on my to-do list during those times when I have childcare.

Don’t tell him, but he was right.

I’m more productive; I sleep better; I’ve lost weight; and I’m happier. Whenever I slip and let work consume my “me time,” everyone feels the change in my energy and mood.

Novant Health launches substance abuse program MATTHEWS – Novant Health Psychiatric Recovery and Counseling is open to adults seeking treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.

This new outpatient program gives individuals the flexibility to live at home, allowing participation in work, school and other personal obligations while undergoing drug or alcohol rehabilitation.

Converting to online banking teaches valuable lesson about change

You need to know I hate change. I am a very old-fashioned, very traditional person. I would still be using a corded “rotary” phone if the phone company would allow me to use it. But those days are over.

Don’t laugh too hard but I still write checks. I have coworkers who haven’t written a check in years. Not only do I write checks, but I also balance my checkbook each Rev. Tony month.

Most recently, I broke down and decided I had to do online banking. I made an appointment with my branch manager so he could help me navigate this very difficult process. I sat down, with sweaty palms and raised heartbeat raised, as Medic truck sat in the bank parking lot for the moment I coded with either a heart attack or stroke. We opened my account. He was pleased to see my credit card and mortgage was with the bank. He showed me how easy it was to pay bills. But what about my other creditors?

None of them were in my bank’s list of payees. He showed me how to add a new vendor. What about transferring money from one account to another? Again, a few clicks of the mouse and it was done. Then there

was that scary thing about taking a photo of my check and depositing it with my phone.

He showed me how to download the app.

A few days later, I paid my mortgage and cable bill online. Other bills came in and I set up accounts for them and paid them on line. I deposited a check using my phone. I will confess to you I wrote the confirmation code on the invoice.

It wasn’t hard. It was very easy. For years, I resisted the change, hoping the world would go back to paying bills by check and sending them in the mail. But just like the steam locomotives of the 1800s are not going to run again, so too are paying by checks going the way of online bill payment.

Understand that I make things harder than they need to be. I tell everyone that I have the spiritual gift of taking the simple and confusing everyone. My staff and wife will “Amen” that. It’s also easy to make the message of Christianity so complicated when it is so very simple. In my mind, I can still see a 70-year-old Billy Graham standing at a podium in a crusade, speaking to thousands of people. He looks out upon the crowd and says to everyone in attendance, “God Loves You.” The simple message of the Gospel is God loves you. God took care of our mess, our mistakes, our sin by paying for it on the cross. As we receive that gift of His love into our hearts, it is transformational.

A week after I paid my mortgage online, I received an e-mail from my bank. They wanted me to manage my mortgage on my smartphone. The email included all the steps I needed to do so paper would never enter my mailbox. I shrieked and said, “One step at a time. Be grateful I paid my mortgage online.”

I’m sure in a few months I’ll receive another en-

couraging note from them to take the plunge.

I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well, my friend.

Rocky River’s Alexander building legacy at Louisville

Jaire Alexander made a name for himself during some of Louisville’s biggest games last season, but the 5-foot-11, 192-pound junior cornerback and return specialist had several obstacles to overcome before he was in position to showcase his NFL-caliber talent.

Lofty expectations surround Alexander after an impressive sophomore season. His lockdown cover skills and dynamic playmaking ability as a punt returner garnered national attention. Now, Alexander is on the preseason watch lists for the Paul Hornung Award, which goes to the most versatile player in college football; the Chuck Bednarick, which goes to the nation’s Defensive Player of the Year, and the Jim Thorpe, which goes to the best defensive back in the country.

He enjoyed a brief homecoming celebration when he returned to Charlotte for the ACC Kickoff to meet with members of the media July 13. Alexander, a native of Philadelphia, who moved to Charlotte when he was 5 years old, took time to discuss his high hopes for the season. He didn’t hesitate to reminisce about how his time at Rocky River and the tutelage of former Ravens’ coach Jason Fowler, who helped him grow and develop not only as a football player, but as a young man, too.

However, the greatest thing to happen to Alexander isn’t all the notoriety he’s getting for his football prowess. He wants to stay grounded, humble and hungry. No, the greatest thing to happen to him was getting a second chance at life.

As a youth, Alexander was a troubled kid, who was heading down a path of selfdestruction.

He was in and out of homes and making court appearances. Alexander had to live with his grandmother Deborah AlexanderCousin, who provided a positive influence in his life. Another person, who Alexander would not identify, entered his life right in the midst of his troubled past. That person was able to get through his stubbornness in ways his parents, Tawanda and Earl Alexander, couldn’t.

“Ultimately, I had to turn my life around,” Alexander said. “I went through a program.

It made me realize how short life is, how valuable life is and you got to make the most out of your opportunities.”

Alexander is no longer in contact with that special person who helped him break from his destructive lifestyle and get on a path to success. However, Alexander said that man would check on him at school to make sure he was doing what was right and taking care of his responsibilities.

“I didn’t want to let my parents down,”

Alexander said. “I knew I had to change.

That was in me. That was in my heart.”

Alexander has made a 180-degree turnaround in life. He is thriving on and off the field. Academically, Alexander is a criminal justice major at Louisville, but isn’t sure he wants to pursue a career in law enforcement.

At the same time, Alexander believes his future will include using his platform and life experiences to help others, especially youth.

His dream is to start a foundation in Charlotte that develops young people through sports.

Fowler saw great potential in Alexander when he arrived at Rocky River before the start of his junior year of high school.

However, Alexander thought he was a wide receiver when he joined the Ravens. Fowler told him he would play cornerback in college, and he was right. He also told Alexander he needed to trust him when he switched him from offense to defense.

“Coach Fowler, he was on the father figure side,” Alexander said. “I got a father, but he treated me like his own. He helped me along the process.”

The move obviously paid off for Alexander. He played an integral role in helping Rocky River win the Southwestern 4A Conference championship in 2013 and advance to the third round of the state playoffs in 2013 and 2014.

His recruitment began to take off soon after his transition to the secondary. Alexander originally committed to the University of South Carolina, but later flipped from the Gamecocks to the Cardinals.

The biggest surprise came when he didn’t get scholarship offers from instate schools – Duke, N.C. State, North Carolina and Wake Forest.

He got the opportunity to show the Blue Devils, Wolfpack and Demon Deacons what they missed out on as a freshman and sophomore and will get a chance to do the same against the Tar Heels when Louisville visits Chapel Hill on Sept. 9.

His favorite play during his time at Louisville thus far came when he ripped the ball out of Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams’s hands in the end zone for an interception, but his breakout performance came during Louisville’s blowout win over Florida State last season when he recorded three tackles, a pass deflection and a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Alexander still carries a chip on his shoulder after getting passed on by Duke, N.C. State, UNC and Wake, and uses the feeling of getting snubbed as fodder for his inner fire, which is an ever-burning blaze of motivation.

He doesn’t let himself get comfortable or complacent. Alexander is out to build on his success from the last two seasons.
