Mayor: We’re making progress on NCDOT project

MATTHEWS – As the clock approached midnight Tuesday, March 14, I was hoping Mayor Jim Taylor and Matthews commissioners would turn into pumpkins, so I could take them home and make a nice pie. That didn’t happen.

The mayor and commissioners continued to hash out language for a resolution that lays out what Matthews wants to happen with the N.C. Department of Transportation’s widening of East John Street.

The resolution stopped short of saying, “Matthews doesn’t want a superstreet along its historic downtown,” but the recommendations strongly hint at it.

“Preserving the small-town character of Matthews is a top priority for the Matthews Board of Commissioners, its citizens and staff,” the resolution states, noting how the project separates the symbolic center of town from landmarks, such as Stumptown Park and the McDowell Arts Center.

Superstreets restrict left turns and encourage U-turns. While statistically safer than traditional four-lane divided highways, they do require additional right-of-way to accommodate U-turns for larger vehicles.

The resolution has four major asks, each with a set of more specific bullet points:

• Eliminate loons (extra space to make U-turns) or at least restrict them to cars.

Trucks and school buses could take other routes.

• Install full-movement inHigdon tersections along East John Street at McKee Road, Greylock Ridge Road and Charles Buckley Way. They’d be OK with a roundabout at McKee. • Soften the affect of the project at John and Trade streets by eliminating U-turns and maybe left turns from John onto Trade, as well as adding pedestrian features.

• Consider several design suggestions for East John Street, including narrowing the travel lane width to 11 feet west of I-485 and saving houses in the project’s path.

Commissioner John Higdon encouraged colleagues to use stronger language when it comes to saving homes and keeping medians narrow.

He doesn’t buy the notion that wider medians decrease speeds.

The board discussed how to articulate these points, including the need to offer potential solutions. In the case of saving houses along East John Street, the board identified moving homes as an option.

“We may not be able to save the houses,” Taylor said. “I have no idea, but I think we should impress upon them all avenues need to be explored and exhausted if that decision is made.”

Some residents, like Aana Lisa Whatley, have questioned whether town leaders have done enough to fight the superstreet concept. She wants them to take a harder stance in Taylor negotiations with NCDOT. “I don’t think we’ve thrown in the towel at all,” Taylor told Whatley. “We’re fighting this battle within the parameters we have available.

The state could say, ‘Go away, Matthews. We’re going to build exactly what we want to build.’”

Taylor is encouraged that NCDOT is still at the table listening. While opposed to the superstreet concept, Taylor has said the town’s best strategy is to maintain an attitude of compromise.

“I think we’re making progress,” Taylor said.

“They haven’t built a darn thing yet. They haven’t designed it yet. Until it’s actually being built, we have a chance to have an impact on it.

I’m not giving up and I don’t think anyone else is giving up.”

I think the resolution was the appropriate action to take at this time.

Matthews has built up a considerable amount of goodwill by being engaged in regional transportation meetings and buying into alternative forms of transportation (pedestrian walkways, bike paths and mass transit). I think it’s wise to cash in that political capital for this project.

The community owes a great deal of grati-

tude to residents like Whatley, as well as Renee Gardner and Paul O’Shaughnessy, for ensuring elected leaders are working on behalf of the citizens. I believe they are.

The reason that Monday’s meeting lasted more than five hours was because the mayor and commissioners asked developer after developer tough questions when it came to several rezoning requests. Whether they pressured developers about the number of trees being cut down or about the quality of the materials used on the buildings, the common thread to these discussions was “How does this fit with Matthews?”

People who don’t want to see East John Street widened to four lanes are going to be disappointed, because this project is many years in the making. But the superstreet design can and should be challenged.

I recommend citizens reach out to N.C. Rep. Bill Brawley about examining how communities can have a greater role in shaping regional road projects that roll through their towns – particularly projects that sit for several years without funding. While our state road engineers do a great job of creating efficient and safe roadways, we can’t lose sight of how state highways affect the character of communities, especially historic downtowns.

News Briefs Chef’s hard work paying off MINT HILL – Kelly Anne Pearson comes from a culture where food is not just vital but celebrated and revered. Growing up in Barbados, Pearson’s mother began teaching her how to cook at 12 years old. She was working in her parents’ restaurant by the time she turned 16.

Later, she and her family moved to New York City, where they operated a Brooklyn restaurant that blended Caribbean and American cuisine for 10 years.

Academy Sports favors spot in Matthews Corners MATTHEWS – Matthews Corners could be getting a new Academy Sports store.

John Keen, development manager for Academy Sports, said the Texas-based brand focuses on active-minded families.

building with up to 207,000 square feet of floor space along Northeast Parkway.

Town commissioners want to ensure the building is nice enough to fit with the nearby Fountains Matthews Apartments. The planning board will vet the plan later this month.

Lidl vies to locate in town MATTHEWS – Lidl, a chain of grocery stores popular in Europe, is eying Matthews as part of its American expansion.

Elizabeth Coffey Outen Trust hopes to rezone 4.9 acres of residential property at Idlewild and Margaret Wallace roads to allow for a 40,000-square-foot grocery store.

Commissioner Rob Urban said the look of the building isn’t quite Matthews, but he appreciates its modern look. He’d like to see the site become more of a gateway into town, perhaps with public art and way-finding signs directing people.

Resort community pitched for Weddington Road MATTHEWS – Resort Lifestyle Communities envisions 17 acres of undeveloped land at 1700 Weddington Road becoming a community with up to 140 age-restricted multifamily units.

The company is working with Williams Business Properties/Cameron General Contractors to rezone the property to move forward with those plans.

Commissioner Rob Urban was critical of some of the materials proposed for the building during the Monday, March 13 meeting, but developers will work to iron out those concerns heading into the planning board meeting later this month.

Teas aid children’s choir MATTHEWS – Musical Heirs, a Matthewsbased children's choir, will raise money by hosting four Victorian-style teas.

Independence takes draw in exhibition CARY – The Charlotte Independence drew with in-state rivals, North Carolina FC, Saturday, March 11, in the third preseason game of the year, which gives Charlotte a 1-1-1 preseason record.

Enzo Martinez scored two goals and has three goals in the last two preseason matches.

David Estrada added two assists to give him four for the preseason. Alex Martinez and Yann Ekra also scored goals.

“We came out with confidence and we were able to get chances due to the pressure we put on them,” Head Coach Mike Jeffries said. “Our movement was really, really sharp. We got behind them a number of times. To be fair, it was a tale of two halves; our first group versus their second group, and vice versa in the second half.”

Charlotte begins their regular season USL schedule at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at UNC Charlotte’s Transamerica Field.

They’ll play at Sportsplex at Matthews later this summer.

Summer camps The Charlotte Independence will host soccer camps for boys and girls 7 to 14 years old and goalkeepers camps for boys and girls 10 to 18 years old.

• A: Anawanna – Camp Anawanna was a fictional camp in the 1991 Nickelodeon TV show, “Salute Your Shorts.â€? While initially reluctant about going to camp, the kids grow to relish their experiences.

• Q: Questions – It’s not only important to ask camp organizers plenty of questions about the upcoming experience, but it’s also good to quiz your children when they return home to see if they had fun.

Independence boasts strong technical program for ‘Once Upon a Mattress’

MINT HILL – Independence High School will bring a campy, Monty Python flavor to the stage next week, with its production of “Once Upon A Mattress.� “Mattress� tells the story of a fictional medieval kingdom, in which no one in the town can marry unless Prince Dauntless finds a wife. However, his mother, Queen Aggravain, designs iniquitous tests for princesses in waiting, which they can’t ever pass. But Winnifred the Woebegone, an unrefined princess from the marshlands, arrives and Dauntless is taken with her, much to his mother’s chagrin. So, Aggravain devises a plan to stop their union.

Independence usually selects its production based on its talent and cast pool and “Mattress� usually isn’t popular, said Paula Baldwin, the play’s director. However, Butler High School, South Pointe High School in Gaston County and Kings Mountain High School in Cleveland County performed the production this year. All the shows are in the running for the Blumeys, the Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Awards. “I had directed the show nine years ago at Mint Hill Middle (the junior version) and I just had really good memories of the show coming together,� Baldwin said.

The show pokes fun at “Princess and the Pea� and provides light entertainment for all ages.

Independence wanted to “camp it up� with some surprises coming for the audiences, Baldwin added. “Kids are going to love it. Adults are going to get humor that the kids don’t and vice versa,� said technical theater teacher Richard Dills.

Junior Grace McKinney, who plays Lady Larkin – a character that has a special interest in wanting Dauntless to find a wife, considers the

show a “sweet, little story� and learned to expand her singing range. She added her own flair to the role. “I think (Larkin) is played helpless in a lot of shows and I don’t like playing helpless. I think I’ve made her a little bit strong and more headstrong than how she’s typically played,� Grace said.

Independence goes up against many schools with much larger budgets in the Blumeys, but the school boasts its large technical theater program, in which about 100 students participate, ranging from freshmen to seniors. The entire set for “Mattress� was manufactured by Indepen-

dence’s technical theater students.

Dills started designing the set at the end of last school year and teamed up with Kyle Harris, an Independence student, to create a model of the large, castle-like set.

They drew inspiration from the 1964 film and conducted research upon sets of the production and other productions with castles for the final design.

Dills said they chose to move away from the “dark, dank� depiction of a castle for a whimsical, bright style. “If we didn’t have a technical theater teacher teaching classes in the shop, then I would be trying to coordinate building scenery and directing the kids. It’s a blessing that I have and a lot of schools don’t have that,� Baldwin said.

Dills, who is in his third year, said Independence is one of the few schools in the state with a specific technical theater program.

Dills doesn’t see Independence’s theater as simply “high school theater,� but community theater. “We try to push a different level behind that.

It’s still high school, but we want a more professional feel about what our kids do,� he said. “Once Upon A Mattress� will run March 23 to 25 at 7 p.m. and March 26 at 2 p.m. in the Independence High School auditorium. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Crestdale Middle School principal discusses new role, education climate

MATTHEWS – CharlotteMecklenburg Schools appointed Jennifer Schroeder as principal of Crestdale Middle School in January. Schroeder was an assistant principal at Ar- Schroeder drey Kell High School.

She talked to Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly about her interest in teaching, challenges in education and what she hopes to accomplish with her new role.

What motivated you to teach?

I have wanted to become a teacher since I was in elementary school. I remember helping my teachers grade papers and helping my peers in my own classes when they were struggling. As I grew older, my uncle was an inspiration for me to further pursue education. He is a special education teacher in New York, and as I listened to him speak of how rewarding his job was, how much his students meant to him and what a difference he was able to make in their lives, I knew it was the career path for me. During my years in the classroom, I loved watching the “light bulb” go on for my students and form relationships with them throughout the school year

How has the teaching profession evolved since you began?

We have a lot more technology to use with students than we have had before, we just have to use it to their benefit and be thoughtful in what is most beneficial for their instruction. With anything that has changed over time, I think it is very important to always keep in mind that our main focus in the classroom is instruction and forming relationships with students.

The last principal implemented some unique programs and opportunities.

Will those still be used at the school?

During these first few months in my principalship, I will be working with our parents, students and staff members to determine what is best for Crestdale. I am walking through classrooms and monitoring the day-to-day workings of our building to identify what adjustments may be necessary to ensure the best learning environment for our students. Together, I look forward to working with all stakeholders to make any final decisions on adjustments that need to be made – I am a strong believer in teamwork and making decisions collaboratively.

What do you hope to bring to Crestdale?

I believe Crestdale is an amazing school – I am so excited to be here. I truly want to bring

a sense of school pride, a school that is focused on instruction, while being fun for our students at the same time. We have begun bringing more celebratory items for our staff and students during these past two weeks, recognizing outstanding staff members for their hard work and giving our students treats just to show them how much we care about them. I do not believe in making major changes for the upcoming year, it is my understanding there has been a lot of that in years past. However, after gaining insight from everyone, I will be able to make the best decisions for our school this summer.

What is the biggest challenge in education today?

I believe one of the biggest challenges in education today is keeping quality educators in the classroom. When the salary that our teachers are receiving is not what they may be receiving from a competing career choice, it causes them to leave the classroom … We have a difficult time finding teachers in several of our vital content areas throughout the district, and I hope to see that change. Education is the foundation of our children’s lives, and we need strong educators in our classrooms. Knowing that salary is something preventing that from happening throughout our state is upsetting.

Bella, a seventh-grader from Carmel Christian School, presented her original 10-minute play, “Indifferent.”

The Theatre for Young Audiences/USA and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education run the competition.

Students flex creek trivia MINT HILL – Students from Lebanon Road Elementary School tested their knowledge about STEM in the second annual Autobell Car Wash Creek Challenge.

Teams of third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students undertook a STEM curriculum to compete in Creek Challenge activities, demonstrating their Mecklenburg County creek knowledge.

The competition activities included a Water Wizard Quiz Bowl, exhibits and demonstrations of model dams and aquifers constructed by the students.

I got the rose, now it’s off to ‘Shark Tank’

I have been secretly appearing on two TV shows – “The Bachelorette” and “Shark Tank.” I recently got the rose on “The Bachelorette.” Now, it’s off to Rev. Tony the final presentation with “the sharks.”

I’m not a TV reality star. I’ve been in Charlotte’s own version of these shows.

It’s called Seed20 – a social venture partnership to significantly impact people in need. Seed20 chooses 20 charities to give a three-minute pitch to say what new project they would do with an extra $20,000.

On March 1, all 20 participated. Ten were selected to make the final presentation to 800 people (the “sharks”) March 27. I got the rose to be in the top 10.

This has been one of the most difficult things I have done. As much as I love public speaking, this was very difficult. I was limited to three minutes. I had to make my speech with no notes. If I went over the three-minute mark, I could be penalized.

I couldn’t re-write the script while I was speaking because there was a time limit. I was stressed.

Of all the things that have been on my plate lately, this is at the top of my stress pile. I rehearsed my speech while exercising on the elliptical trainer at the YMCA. At our first practice session, I volunteered to go first. My speech had 557 words. I talked fast, very fast. I covered every facet of the mission and our project. I thought it was wonderful. No one understood me.

The consistent comment from the coaches was “slow down.”

I practiced even more for our second practice session. I rehearsed and rehearsed in my backyard, trying to convince the squirrels this was a worthy presentation.

The night arrived for my second practice session. I chose not to go first. After a few presenters were done, I came to the stage to make my presentation.

It started off great as I gave my first paragraph. It was dynamic. It was powerful. It was the last thing I remembered.

I could not remember the next paragraph of my speech. It wasn’t hard; it was just my name. But I couldn’t remember that. My mind went blank. I was a polar bear in a snowstorm trying to find the white board.

The harder I thought, the more I was convinced I had no idea what to say next. I knew the clock on the timer was ticking. I was in trouble. I expected them to tell me to sit down. I would have wasted my prac-

I began at the first paragraph and continued with the entire speech. It came off well. This time there were 484 words. I spoke slower with more phrasing.

What I most recall is that I was given something I didn’t deserve – a “do-over.”

I should have been told to sit down. I was given a second chance.

Isn’t that what God gives us each and every day. He gives us a second chance. There is a scripture verse that says, “God’s mercies are new every morning.” Whether I mess up my diet or say or do something I regret, each day God offers me a “do-over.”

Ridge Church seeks expansion MATTHEWS – Ridge Ministries has submitted plans for a campus expansion that would combine three parcels into one plan, including the Savour building and the water tower property.

Town leaders debated for several months whether it was wise to allow the church to buy the water tower property when a portion of it would be reserved for right-of-way for the future Independence Pointe Parkway alignment. But the church has faith the widening would only eat up 14 parking spaces.

Plans call for a church building with up to 400-person seating capacity and 45,000 square feet, as well as an additional 4,800 square foot of building space used for catering.

Churchgoers would be able to access the site with a new driveway onto Independence Pointe and the driveway into the catering office. There would be 154 parking spaces.

Pastor Chris Brown said the idea was not just to build a church, but create something that connected to the community.

Ridge Church serves about 600 to 700 worshippers a week, according to Brown. The church is offering a third service on Sundays to accommodate large crowds.

The project heads to the Matthews Planning Board later this month for more extensive review. The planning board will offer recommendations to town commissioners next month for a final decision.

Total Being Yoga serves as judge-free zone

MINT HILL – One year ago, Mian Rex began organizing and instructing yoga sessions in her home.

Rex met clients and other instructors that inspired her to pursue yoga in a more professional and involved way than she could achieve with home-based classes.

Twelve months later, Rex found herself opening Total Being Yoga near downtown.

The intimate studio has made great effort to ensure all skill levels, from the first-timer to the seasoned pro, feel comfortable coming to classes.

The second floor space is well-windowed with light colored walls, making the environment feel intimate but not cave-like.

Aside from the welcome desk near the entrance, the large open space has a predominant visual feature – a mural of a lotus blossom created by local artist Tim Sheaffer.

The mural creates a positive focal point for students to direct their gaze during sessions.

Total Being Yoga sells products, such as toe-touch yoga socks and in a partnership with one of Rex’s clients, Ben Tyson, fresh farm eggs.

Dunn concluded a solid junior season with a strong showing at the SPAA Conference Championship meet. She claimed fourth place in the conference in the 200-yard freestyle (2:35.08) and in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.94).

Park made strides, improving from her freshman to sophomore year. She was solid for the Bulldogs in the 500-yard freestyle (5:59.32), taking sixth place in the event in the Southwestern 4A Conference championship meet and 20th in the event at regionals.

Ross gave the Patriots a boost this season. The junior was at her best in the 100-yard freestyle.

She placed fifth in the conference in the event with a time of 1:00.46. Ross also was solid in the 100-yard backstroke that featured a seventh place effort (1:12.70) in the conference championship.

Natoli hopes to bring stability to Indy

Statesville Christian offensive coordinator Mike Natoli was named Independence’s next football coach March 8 and his first official day on the job was scheduled for Monday, March 13.

He takes over a reeling program in need of stability and fresh energy after it went 2-9 (2-4 Southwestern 4A) and failed to make the state playoffs last season.

Natoli, who is Independence’s fifth head coach in four years, replaces Hal Brown, who was promoted to interim head coach after Scott Young was relieved of his duties a week before the start of last season less than four months after he was hired to lead the Patriots.

He was hired after going through three interviews and CMS’s employee clearing process. “(Independence principal) Mr. (David) Legrand wanted to make sure he took his time,�

Natoli said. “He had a really good plan as far as the process goes, because he wanted to make sure he got the right fit for Independence. “I’m extremely thankful that Mr. Legrand and the administration at Independence are trusting me with their football program. This is obviously a very critical time in their program.

It was just a great fit for both sides.�

Natoli’s first meeting with his new players was a positive experience. He said the players were anxious to meet him and are ready to go to work.

Natoli inherits a program with a rich history that includes eight consecutive state championship appearances from 2000 to 2007 and seven straight state titles during that run of dominance. He embraces those championship standards with much enthusiasm.

Natoli’s first order of business is to put a coaching staff together. He is in the process of meeting with the assistant coaches that were on staff last season. Natoli hopes to retain most of them, but he would like to bring in a couple of his own guys, too. Natoli expects to get that ironed out quickly.

For Natoli, the most important thing is

building relationships with the players, parents, school administration, teachers and folks in the community.

Natoli said the Patriots will strive for excellence in every asNatoli pect of their program. He said the players are going to be held accountable in the classroom. “We’re going to monitor their grades, get them help when they need it,� Natoli said. “We’re going to try to be excellent in that aspect.�

He added the team will be involved in the community and will give back with service projects. They also will do character development with the players.

Independence will operate out of a variation of the spread offense, but the Patriots’ base defensive scheme has yet to be determined.

The 39-year-old native of Massillon, Ohio, brings solid experience to Independence. Natoli played high school football at Jackson High School near Massillon. He went on to Kent State University, where he was studying architecture.

However, Natoli realized he would rather work with kids, teach and coach.

He moved to North Carolina 13 years ago and started coaching at Newton-Conover. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in his fourth year with the Red Devils. They made two straight state championship appearances in 2008 and 2009, winning a title in 2008. Natoli served as the head coach at Richlands from 2010 to 2012. The Wildcats had a 14-20 record and reached the state playoffs once under his watch. He took the same position at West Iredell from 2013 to 2014. The Warriors went 3-19 during his tenure.

He transitioned back to an assistant coaching role at to Statesville Christian, where he spent the last two seasons. The Lions, who averaged 44 points per game, won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III state championship with him calling the offense last season.

Natoli will teach math the rest of the semester and weightlifting in the fall.

Gray brings unique experience to Rocky River

Orlando Gray was named Rocky River’s next football coach March 9. He replaces Jason Fowler as the second head coach in the history of the program. Fowler left for the same position at Olympic after a seven-year tenure with the Ravens.

Most recently, Gray served as West Iredell’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.

The 43-year-old Kannapolis native takes his first head-coaching job after 20 years in coaching that also included stops at Concord and A.L. Brown. Gray, who was coached in high school by Bruce Hardin, was a three-time varsity football letterman for the Wonders. He attended Catawba College.

The longtime assistant was mentored not only by Hardin, but by other area high school coaching greats E.Z. Smith at Concord and Ron Massey and Mike Newsome (former Butler coach) at A.L. Brown. Gray called Smith an inspiration. Smith is the reason why he coaches, because the legend gave him his first job.

Gray’s background is one of diverse experiences that have helped to shape him as a person, teacher and coach. He worked his way up to a store manager role for Food Lion, and served as a paratrooper in the Army reserves for eight years. His unit was an extension of the 82nd Airborne. “We are really excited to bring Coach Gray on,� Rocky River athletics director Jonathan Lamb said. “He seems to have a wealth of experience. He’s got an excitement and enthusiasm we believe is going to invigorate our program.�

Gray said the military taught him discipline, accountability and leadership, which are traits he hopes to instill in his players at Rocky River. “It taught me whatever you want you have to really work hard for it,� Gray said. “Even sometimes when you work hard and you may not have the success you want, the military taught me you have to keep going.�

Rocky River finished with a 4-7 record (2-4 Southwestern 4A) last season. Under Fowler, the Ravens won a conference championship in 2013, reached the playoffs three times, advanced to the third round twice and had an overall record of 38-45.

“Coach Fowler and his staff laid a good foundation,� Gray said. “A lot of times it’s tough to compete in Charlotte, especially when you’re a new school. He’s done some good Gray things every year he’s been here. My job is to build on what he has already laid down, a great foundation. “I’m super excited to be here. I have the characteristics and skill it takes to be a head coach.

I understand organizing, training, developing, implementing plans and executing. I have the football experience. I know the X’s and O’s, but I also know people.�

Offensively, Rocky River will stick to a variation of the spread. It will include zone schemes and the pistol, but the Ravens won’t be afraid to get under center for a power rushing attack.

Defensively, the Ravens will operate out of a 4-2-5 as its base scheme, which is similar to a nickel defense out of a 4-3 philosophy.

Gray wants to win games, but he also wants his players to learn the importance of giving back to the community whether it’s cleaning up a road, building a house with Habitat for Humanity or visiting the elderly at a nursing home. He plans to implement a mentoring program, where upperclassmen help underclassmen adjust to high school.

Gray and his wife, Thurshell, have three grown children. He is a career technical education teacher and will fill that role at Rocky River.

Lamb described the process of assembling a coaching staff for Gray as a partnership. “We need to have positions available for him to bring on coaches,� Lamb said. “We also have coaches in the building we want to give them the opportunity to continue to work. We understand how the process works and that the head coach would like to build their own staff. “In some cases, we may have the opportunity to hire some people that he wants to bring in if we have positions within the building that are open. In other cases, we’re optimistic that he’ll continue to work with some of our coaches that are remaining on staff.�
