Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER (R, 1972, 175 min)

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the secluded mountains of Colorado. Jack takes his wife and son to the hotel to keep him company throughout the long and isolated nights. During their stay strange things occur when Jack's son Danny sees gruesome images powered by a force called "The Shining". Along with writer's block and the demons of the hotel haunting him Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s SOLARIS (PG, 1972, Russia, 167 min)

Ground control has been receiving strange transmissions from the remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate, he experiences the strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? Episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects.

HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (R, 1980, 80 min)

Something evil is happening in a sleepy fishing village. Fishlike humanoid creatures, spawned by mutant DNA, begin rising from the ocean looking to mate with the local women. Scientist Susan Drake and local fisherman Jim Hill seek to investigate the cause of this invasion from the ocean floor. But when the annual Salmon Festival begins, some unwanted guests are about to crash the festivities.

Years ago, Madman Marz violently murdered his family only to escape into the woods before his execution could be completed. Legend has it that anyone who calls his name can summon him back to continue his bloody rampage. But Richie doesn't believe the old legend and calls his name. MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE (R, 1986, 97 min)

A nightmare world of machines is taking over the Earth. At first, the problems seem minor as gas pumps stop pumping fuel, video games flash uncontrollably, and soda machines spit change and soda pop.

However, when the carnage begins, a small group of people make a last stand against a horde of massive 18-wheelers. A comic horror flick from Stephen King, based on his short story "Trucks."

THE PROWLER (Uncut Version) (NR, 1981, 89 min)

A masked killer, wearing World War II U.S. Army fatigues, stalks a small New Jersey town bent on reliving a 35-year-old double murder by focusing on a group of college kids holding a spring dance. The khaki-clad maniac impales his unfortunate victims with a bayonet.

This masterwork of stylish gore is one of the most beloved cult slashers of the 1980's, and features outstanding make-up by Tom Savini.

THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW (R, 1987, 97 min)

Wes Craven directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses.

WOLFEN

A real-estate tycoon, his coke-binging wife and a slum wino have something grisly in common: They’re the latest victims in a series of random murders.
