Canines for Veterans Returns to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Brig

Dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to achieve greater independence and enhanced quality of life through the gift of specially trained service dogs.

Nearly 11 years from the start of the service dog training program at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Canines for Veterans returns with a service dog training curriculum for the prisoners. This past summer, Rick Hairston, President/CEO of Canines for Service, was contacted by CWO4 Bolman inquiring of our organizations interest to return to the base. Without a doubt the answer was yes. The implementation was in the hands of CWO4 Bolman to turn the request into a reality at the facility in Camp Lejeune.

On December 13, 2018, newly selected and screened dogs were loaded up to head to the Marine Corps Installations East Regional Brig aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to meet the 10 prisoners who were selected to participant in the service dog training program. Over the course of the next few weeks, Canines for Service will be screening more dogs to select for training, with a goal of having seven (7) service dogs in training. The prisoners will be responsible for the basic training of the dogs along with their day-to-day care. Canines for Service (CFS) staff will be on-site a couple days a week instructing the prisoners in various aspects of dog training, handling, grooming and care, along with preparing the dogs to complete basic training. The dogs will then return to the CFS facility to complete intermediate and advanced training before being partnered with a Veteran who has been pre-qualified to receive a service dog.

The concept of training service dogs in a prison is not new. Over 30 years ago, programs were started in civilian prisons and continue to run successfully across the country by many organizations. What is different is the Canines for Service program is one of two programs in United States being done in a military prison and the only one to use adult shelter or rescue dogs for training. CFS has a wealth of experience in conducting a program behind the walls of a military brig. From January of 2008 until July of 2015, the Canines for Veterans program ran successfully at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and then at the Charleston Navel Station Bring in South Carolina. The model has a proven track record to reduce the overall length of time to train a quality service dog while maintaining the standards and providing valuable job skills to prisoners when they are released.

Hurricane Florence Hurricane Florence unexpectedly brought our operations to a halt for the majority of the month of September. The Canines for Service facility, where we have our offices and where we house and train the service dogs, is located in Wilmington, North Carolina. As it became clear Wilmington was going to be facing a direct hit, combined with the severity of the storm, a decision was made to evacuate all staff, trainers and service dogs in training. Evacuations were made to Charlotte, Atlanta, Savannah, Kentucky and St. Louis, with most not able to return for close to two weeks. We were incredibly fortunate that all of the service dogs in training and staff/trainers were safe and that we returned with very minimal damage to our facility. We sincerely appreciate your patience and concern during this time.

A Message from Rick Over my twenty-two years with Canines for Service there is one important point I have learned; always be open to change.

Non-profits have to change to remain in business and have the ability to continue to provide services. The last several years have been about change.

Finding a new way to continue training quality dogs after leaving the military prison training program in 2015, relocating into much needed larger space in 2016 and adding an additional building next door in January of this year, launching the vocational training program for people to learn service dog training, increasing the staff to meet the demands of the growing organization and now returning to the Marine Corps Installations East Regional Brig aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune (MCIERBrig). Every change has been thoughtfully made knowing the impact on the people we serve, the staff employed, the shelter dogs saved, and the volunteers who find a joy in giving back.

I am excited to see us return to the MCIER-Brig. The program was successful when it started ten years ago and I am confident we will see similar success with this restart.

Already there are requests by more prisoners than anticipated to be a part of the program. Initially planned to start with eight prisoners and six dogs, we started with 10 prisoners and seven dogs. Gearing up with supplies, training materials, and searching for canine candidates has been the focus of the last couple of weeks, in addition to the routine work. Just in the last week, five new dogs came into the program, with two of the dogs pending hip evaluation just after the new year. All of this works because of the commitment by staff to quickly respond, to the shelter groups and rescues we work with and the veterinary team working hard to accommodate the need.

I am embracing this exciting change and continued growth for Canines for Service.

From Shelter to Helper Canines for Service had a record-breaking year with the number of dogs rescued from shelters. Over the course of 2018, twenty one rescue dogs passed the rigorous temperament test and were brought into the service dog training program. After the dog passes the temperament test, they are brought back to our facility and receive veterinary care, including being brought up to date on all vaccines, bloodwork and x-rays of their hips and elbows to ensure they are sound to do the physically demanding work involved with service dog training.

Once it has been determined the dog is healthy, their training begins. Over the course of nine to fourteen months, a service dog in training will learn up to 90 commands. If at any point they are deemed inappropriate for service dog work, the dog is adopted into a loving home as a pet. Reasons for releasing a dog can include bad hips, little desire to work, or behavioral issues.

The dogs we rescue all have different stories to tell. Some, like Azariah, were surrendered by their owners because they had too much energy or shed too much. Others, like Mia and Roman, had families who found themselves in difficult positions where they could no longer adequately care for them. And many, many others were found as strays, underweight and in need of a caring touch. While we don’t always know their stories, we sometimes find out bits and pieces along the way.

When Lilah was receiving her medical evaluation, the Veterinarian noticed something Service Dog in Training, unusual in her x-ray; over 30 BB pellets Azariah scattered throughout her body. This poor girl had been cruelly mistreated but you would never by her sweet and outgoing temperament. These incredible dogs have been given a second chance and a new, tremendously important purpose in life.

Volunteer dog walkers are a big part of the dog care team, helping out three times a day, seven days a week, rain or shine. New Beginnings Daniel & Micah Earlier this year, Canines for Service reached a milestone when we partnered our 50th service dog with a Veteran. Daniel served over five years as a Combat Engineer in the United States Marine Corps and because of the injuries he sustained, he came to Canines for Service seeking greater independence and a change in his life. Micah was an owner surrender to a shelter because he had too much energy. He was brought into our service dog program and it became clear that when his abundance of energy was focused on learning a job, he could do absolutely amazing things. Daniel and Micah excelled through team training together. Their bond is exceptional and Daniel has been able to sleep through the night, something he struggled with tremendously before Micah. He hopes in the near future he will be able to start traveling again with Micah by his side.

Gary & Sarai Gary, an Army Veteran, bravely served our country, and while doing so, suffered several service-connected injuries.

He had a hard time leaving the house and could not even enjoy being out with his wife because he was never at ease and constantly hypervigilant. As soon as Gary met his service dog, Sarai, everything changed. Sarai, who was found as a stray, entered into the Canines for Veterans service dog training program and excelled through training. It was evident she loved learning new things and seemed to know she was going to be serving a greater purpose. Since their partnering several months ago, Gary and Sarai have proven to be the perfect match.

“My wife and I recently took a trip to Gettysburg. I felt safe and free to explore everything with Sarai by my side. Sarai does almost all of her skills without even being asked. I am sleeping so much better and I do not feel on edge. At A VA appointment recently, she did a command to help me when someone got too close to me. She is so good for me.� - Gary

Training the Next Generation of Trainers Have you always had an interest in training service dogs? Do you have a desire to have a career in service dog training? With only one degree program for service dog training in the United States based in California, Canines for Service realizes the need to not only provide skilled service dogs but to provide the training skills needed to the future trainers. Organizations with quality trained service dogs are not able to meet the ongoing needs of people with disabilities resulting in long wait lists or sub-standard service dog providers who have little regard for the client's needs or the dog.

To help meet the increasing demand, Canines for Service offers a fee-based comprehensive curriculum to provide hands-on experience to individuals seeking a career in service dog training. The curriculum prepares a person to enter the field of service dog training or pet obedience training in an entry level position for an organization. This program is only offered in Wilmington, North Carolina. Veterans may be referred and sponsored into the program.

The Trainers Program is not for someone who wants to train their own dog as a service dog.

Canines for Service does not train someone’s personal pet as a service dog.

The Trainers Program is 18 months long, meeting 4 days a week, for 6 hours a day. Once a level of qualification is met, students will be required to assist with shifts caring for the service dogs in training and events. Enrollment is now open for the January 2019 class. Volunteers and All They Do Volunteers for Canines for Service are truly the core of the mission. From dog care to visiting in the community with their certified therapy dogs, over 7,700 hours were given in the last year, with a value of just over $191,000 by this dedicated group of people.

Sharing the love of their dog, Therapy Dog Tyler with a little or big, Canines for NHRMC patient Therapy teams bring joy and comfort to those who do not have direct access to a pet. In addition to the regular visits teams make weekly or monthly, our Canines for Therapy teams supported an additional 57 special events; a substantial increase from the 34 special events in 2017. Pet therapy is an important part of the services Canines for Service provides and continues to grow in requests and the number of teams being trained.

In September, we celebrated our volunteers and the work they do at the 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Cook-Out. We wanted to highlight the longevity of the volunteers and their commitment to Canines for Service. Onehundred and seventeen volunteers have been with CFS for at least two years, 30 for three years, 23 for four and five years each, 18 for six years, nine for seven years, Therapy Dog Bentley at seven for eight years, one for Bunn Elementary Durham nine years, two for 10 years, and two for 11 years. The cumulation of our volunteer tenure is a dedicated Canines for Therapy team, Gwyn Scheidt, who has been with us for 15 years.
