Kennesaw Police Officer Graduates from FBI National Academy Program

Kennesaw Police Lieutenant Kevin Mitchell graduated from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Virginia on March 17. The Academy consisted of men and women from 48 states and included members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 25 international countries, three military organizations, and eight federal civilian organizations. FBI Director James Comey was the principal speaker at the ceremony. “It is a singular distinction to be selected to attend the Academy and Lt. Mitchell deserves congratulations for completing it,” said Chief Bill Westenberger. “It’s a great step in his professional development and will also be an excellent opportunity for the department to benefit from the knowledge he will share.” Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy, offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. The program serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide. Training for the program is provided by the FBI Academy instructional staff, Special Agents, and other staff members holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise. By Raymond Rhoades, CPA

Has time gotten away from you this year? Are you afraid of owing tax and want to delay payment? Any taxpayer is allowed to request an extension of time to file their tax returns. The extension only allows you additional time to prepare and file the forms. There is no extension of time to pay any tax due. Any additional tax owed is due by April 18. Any return filed after April 18 without a valid, timely filed extension will be subject to penalties and interest. The penalties and interest are all based on the amount of additional tax that is due with the return. If the late filed return shows an overpayment for 2016 there is no penalty for filing late. The Late Filing Penalty is 5% per month or part of a month that the return is late, up to a 25% maximum penalty. Any 2016 taxes paid after April 18 will incur a Late Payment Penalty of 1/2% per month or part of a month, also up to a 25% maximum penalty. In addition, the IRS charges interest from April 18 until the tax is paid. The IRS believes that 3-1/2 months is enough time to make a good estimate of what the total tax liability will be for the tax year. The application for automatic extension of time to file (Form 4868) has only 4 lines: (1) Estimate of total tax liability for 2016, (2) Total 2016 payments, (3) Balance Due, and (4) Amount you are paying. If you file the extension form and your amounts are reasonably accurate, the IRS will not assess the Late Filing penalty (if you actually do file by the extended due date of October 16). If the IRS determines that the estimate was not reasonable or if you do not actually file by October 16 the extension could be null and void and all penalties will be calculated from April 18. Have you finished your returns and know that you owe additional tax, but don’t have the ability to pay? Don’t delay filing. File the returns by April 18 without full payment so that you are in no danger of being assessed the late filing penalty. Pay as much as you can with the return to minimize the late payment penalty and interest. Complete and include form 9465 to request an installment agreement from the IRS.

DECORATION DAY

Decoration Day at the Historic Kennesaw Cemetery will be Saturday, May 6, 2017. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a bit of the town’s history, clean and decorate grave sites, enjoy local musicians and, of course, eat our delicious grilled delights - all for free! Our Kennesaw Cemetery Commission and Foundation has worked hard to restore and make beautiful one of our oldest sites. Come see the memorial wall, flag court, and sit in the gazebo and gaze over the bridge at the roses and beautiful trees that adorn the cremation garden and line the paths. It is a serene, peaceful site. You can help make it even more beautiful by purchasing a tree for $150.00 in memory or honor of your loved ones. We have a dedication service to honor these loved ones on Decoration Day. You also can honor your loved ones by purchasing a plaque for $100-$1,000 that will be a permanent reminder installed in our impressive rock memorial monument. All these additions cost time and money. The time is the Cemetery Commission and Foundation’s gift. The money comes from donations, trees and memorials and our golf tournament that will be held April 17, 2017 at Bentwater Country Club. So help us by buying a tree, a plaque or supporting our golf tournament by playing, sponsoring a team or sponsoring a “hole” (only $150). Remember all the above is tax deductible! For more information, to purchase a tree or plaque, or to join our organization, call Debbie Harris at 770-424-8274 or Mary Helyn Hagin at 404-316-2154.

David Persson, KBA PRESIDENT Members of the Kennesaw Business Association look forward to April all year and not because the weather is changing or spring break is around the corner. We get excited because it’s time for the Big Shanty Festival in downtown Kennesaw. KBA is proud to organize this annual festival and spend all year preparing. This year marks the 41st Big Shanty Festival and will boast a record number of sponsors, vendors, crafters, food vendors, and live entertainment. This festival exemplifies our mission to bring businesses and the community together whenever possible. The continued success of the Big Shanty Festival allowed the KBA to give back close to $100,000 to local schools and non-profit organizations in Kennesaw last year. We are on track to set another record with this event and would like to thank Superior Plumbing, our title sponsor, and all the other businesses and organizations that sponsor this festival. Where else can you watch a parade, visit 250 craft and food vendors, watch amazing entertainment, and kick off spring without taking a log drive? So mark your calendars for the weekend of April 22nd and 23rd and plan to come out and support your community while enjoying an outstanding weekend of fun in downtown Kennesaw. Business is Blooming with ABA danielle hilderbrand, aba president

“April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks Go.” ~Christopher Morley, John Mistletoe As spring blooms throughout Acworth, businesses and local leaders begin to buzz with excitement, anticipating what’s to come. The beautiful weather and budding blooms routinely awakens my creativity and inspires me to find new ways to promote my business. How about you? Do you ever take a step back and asses your current marketing plan? With spring in the air and bright colors scattered throughout the landscapes it’s easy to find exciting new ideas for promotion. The Acworth Business Association takes advantage of this season and the beautiful weather through events and festivals. We look for creative locations for our monthly Alive After 5 events to encourage networking in the sunshine. In March we celebrated the Ribbon Cutting at Brix on Main in conjunction with our Alive After 5 on their beautiful new patio. On April 13th we will host a Braves Season kickoff with former pitching coach Leo Mazzone at Gabriel’s at The Olde Mill and in May we are looking forward to an awesome kick off to Rotary’s Smoke on the Lake with our Alive After 5 at YMCA’s Camp High Harbor. When we take an opportunity as business owners to kick back and enjoy the company of one another, relationships are built. Through those relationships come partnerships and the more we put into those partnerships the more we get out of them. We invite you to join us at our next event. Visit www.acworthbusiness.org for more information about our events their locations and membership.

Essentials to soothe spring woes By: Danielle Hilderbrand, Pearl’s Spa

The weather is warming up and the azaleas are peeking their beautiful blooms out to spread spring cheer. Spring represents a happy time full of new growth and new beginnings. Although, the weather and blossoms are beautiful, some loathe the sight of spring because of the allergies. Pollen is here in full force and the new blooms on every dogwood you see can stir up quite the unexpected headache. Sometimes over the counter medications and prescriptions are the only thing that will help one survive Spring. Or so you thought, essential oils can make a huge impact on the way that you feel during allergy season. A peppermint essential oil will often times immediately unclog the sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats. Eucalyptus oil opens up the lungs and sinuses. Studies have shown that eucalyptus oil creates a cool sensation in the nose that helps to improve airflow. Lemon oil will help support lymphatic system drainage which helps with overcoming respiratory conditions. These are just a few essential oils and their healing properties that we recommend that our clients use at Pearl’s Spa and Boutique. Selecting a quality essential oil is very important. Some essential oils might be cut with another carrier oil which brings the price down but also cuts down on the benefits that the pure essential oil offers. There are oils that can be used directly on the skin and there are oils that will burn you if used directly on the skin. My favorite way to use essential oils is in a diffuser. This creates a gentle aroma in your workplace, home, bedroom or spa treatment room. Don’t suffer through Spring this year. If you suffer from allergies, visit us at Pearl’s for guidance on selecting the best essential oils and products to help you breathe easy this season.

Calumet West Donates to Charity

The Calumet West Homeowners Association presented a check for $4,355.16 to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at their annual meeting. Neighbors and friends donated $3,355.16, and the Homeowners Association Board of Directors approved an additional $1000.00 contribution. CWHA president Loretta Austin said, “This is the seventh year our HOA has designated Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as our official neighborhood charity, and we are so honored to support this worthy cause. The holidays are a wonderful time of year, and doing something meaningful is a great way to celebrate. Many thanks to everyone who donated!” Donations were collected at the Neighborhood’s Annual Christmas Party, by selling Luminaries for the Neighborhood Christmas Parade, and also by those who stopped by to see the Christmas Lights at the home of Dick and Loretta Austin. In seven years the neighborhood has raised over $23,000 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Next year’s light show promises to be bigger and better, as the Austins have already purchased new items for 2017. Stop by beginning December 1 to see the new show! THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHIROPRACTOR

DR CRIS EATON WELSH “Perception is reality”is something we often hear. What does that really mean when it comes to your health? Have you ever met someone who is always sick? Something is always wrong? They never seem happy or content? I see it in my practice all the time. Two people will come in with very similar cases.. one gets well quickly and one may have lingering issues for a long time. What I have found over the last 17 years in practice is it can often times come down to something as simple as their attitude and desire to be well. While a great attitude isn’t going to overcome everything, it certainly won’t hurt. Suppressingemotions and not processing them as they occur can hinder your healing. That is why there is a saying that a grudge is like poisoning yourself and hoping the other person will die. Emotional stress will hurt your health. Perspective is very powerful. Although we don’t yet fully understand the mind/body connection, we do know that positive attitude can: help improve mood, self-esteem and sense of well-being , decrease depression, anxiety and hostility, lessen pain and other bodily symptoms, speed recovery, enhance immune function, and extend longevity. We also know that to a great extent, our attitude is determined by how we decide to think about events, This “self-talk,” whether positive or negative, is so powerful that it determines not just our emotions, but the condition of our physical and mental wellbeing as well. Take action! Here are three steps to help optimize your emotional health: REALIZE YOU HAVE CONTROL. The great thing about your attitude is that it’s yours. You cannot control what others say or do, but you can control how you react to it. Simply put, no one can put you in a bad mood unless you give them permission! BE THANKFUL. Put things in perspective. You are alive, something that billions of those before us cannot say. You have food, shelter and safety, something that millions alive today do not enjoy. Appreciate your countless blessings! DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. Remember what’s important, and ignore the little things. Focus on the larger picture and you’ll find less frustration in your daily interaction with others. The things that matter most are your health and happiness and your family’s health and happiness. Dr Cris Eaton Welsh practices at WHI @ Eaton Chiropractic. You are always welcome to stop by and see what our office is all about and if chiropractic is right for you. WHY SUNGLASSES DR. MARK HESTER HESTER EYE ASSOCIATES

We are headed into summer. A lot of time will be spent outdoors. We all know the dangers of sun and harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We also all know the importance of sun screen. Well, UV affects your eyes as well. UV causes eye conditions such as pingueculae and pterygia as well as cataracts. Many people wear sun glasses for the effective reduction in brightness and glare. While that is important the biggest reason to wear sunglasses is UV protection. Just like there are different makes and models of vehicles, there are different makes and models of sun glasses. All lenses are not equal. Just because they say they are UV blocking does not mean they block 100% or even the harmful wavelength radiation. We have many brands of premium sunwear including Costa Del Mar and Maui Jim sunglasses as well as a nice selection of pediatric sun wear which are polarized to cut glare sensitivity and they block the harmful UV radiation that can cause tired, irritated eyes and reduce your susceptibility to permanent eye damage. We are now offering the Chemistry Clip to transform your current eyewear into functional sunwear If you spend a lot of time outside for vocation or avocation, you should consider a pair of premium sun glasses to reduce risk and increase visual comfort. Also remember to wear safety glasses while you are out working in the yard using the lawn mower and weed trimmers etc.

Jesus Christ Superstar Opens April 7

Atlanta Lyric Theatre is thrilled to bring one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most popular musicals to Marietta April 7-23, 2017. With music by Webber and Lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is a global phenomenon that has been stunning audiences for over 40 years! Jesus Christ Superstar performs at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (548 South Marietta Pkwy., Marietta). For tickets, reservations and group pricing visit www.AtlantaLyric.com or call 404-377-9948. Jesus Christ Superstar, originally produced in 1970, was the first professional collaboration by the now famed writing duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Jesus Christ Superstar is unique in that it delves in to the relationship between Jesus and Judas in the days leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. Told mostly from the perspective of Judas, Webber and Rice expand on what is presented in the bible about the friendship and what it might be like to have a friend rise to kingly stardom overnight. Jesus Christ Superstar has a ground breaking rock-opera score. Audiences will find that even now, four decades after its premiere, the music is still fresh, audacious, and vibrant.

Daytime Ballet Conservatory Program Coming to The Georgia Ballet

Since its inception in 1959, The School of The Georgia Ballet has offered world-class classical ballet training, performance, and community outreach in the greater Atlanta area. Now, for the first time in its 58 year history, the Marietta-based Georgia Ballet will offer a conservatory program for intermediate and advanced students aspiring to pursue careers in dance. Implemented by School Director Ashleyanne Hensley, the curriculum is thoughtfully designed to provide a base of strong classical ballet technique with additional classes in disciplines. Mrs. Hensley states, “The number of students eager to balance education and their professional dance aspirations leaves many searching for flexible schooling. The Georgia Ballet will now have the ability to provide such programming for these students in the fall of 2017.” Leading the conservatory will be new faculty member Lauri Worrill-Biggs. As a professional performer, Ms. Biggs danced with Joffrey Ballet II, North Carolina Dance Theater, and the Atlanta Ballet. She then served for 10 years as a professor of dance at Belhaven University. The Georgia Ballet is excited to add such a distinguished instructor to our faculty. Ballet Mistress Margit Peguero will assist Ms. Biggs and Mrs. Hensley in teaching the program. All three have mentored students who have achieved professional careers in dance. Conservatory programs provide a unique opportunity for students to receive an accelerated and diverse dance curriculum during the daytime. Students will train 3 hours a day during the week, with optional additional hours on Saturdays or during the evening. They will also be afforded the opportunity to perform with The Georgia Ballet Professional Company and compete at Youth America Grand Prix. To learn more about The School of The Georgia Ballet’s new Conservatory program and how to apply, please call 770-528-0881 or email Ashleyanne Hensley at ahensley@ georgiaballet.org. BAKER SCHOOL LEARNS ABOUT ELECTRICITY Alison Broughton, Principal,Baker Elementary School

Fifth grade students at Baker Elementary have been learning about electricity in their science unit. As a culminating activity, students were given a challenge: Create a propaganda poster with a working circuit. Students tied social studies and art into a science lesson by creating propaganda posters using a working circuit. Once a review of the components needed for an electrical circuit was conducted, the teacher explained that when America entered World War II, propaganda became very important to its success. Students analyzed pieces of WWII propaganda and answered questions such as: Who is this poster intended for? What is the poster trying to get the audience to do? What is the theme of the poster? What symbols, key words or well-known images are used? What is the emotion conveyed by the poster? How would you change the image to make it more powerful? Mrs. Ford gave her students a STEAM Challenge: Create an effective World War II propaganda poster encouraging American citizens to grow a Victory Garden and include a working paper circuit using copper tape, a battery, and an LED bulb somewhere on the poster. Students went through several stages such as brainstorming, designing, creating, testing, evaluating, and improving before reaching success in this challenge. In the end, students presented their World War II Victory Garden Propaganda Posters with working circuits to their classmates.

Cain Named Development Director of TCCA

The Town Center Community Improvement District (TCCID) has hired Jennifer Cain as Development Director of the Town Center Community Alliance, the nonprofit partner organization of the TCCID. She will play an integral role in advancing the priorities of the newly formed Town Center Community Alliance (TCCA), whose mission is to look beyond infrastructure and envision a “heart and soul” for the Town Center community. As a separate 501(c)3, the Town Center Community Alliance invests philanthropic funds into projects to enhance, construct and maintain the trail systems, public parks and greenspace, as well as provide education, programs and services for the Town Center CID and surrounding community. Jennifer Cain comes to the TCCID from the Mariettabased Center for Family Resources (CFR), where she served as Development Director since 2014. She was a member CFR’s executive leadership team, with shared responsibilities for all fundraising initiatives, including the growth of the annual revenue budget. In this role, she increased fundraising revenue by 53%. She brings over 12 years of fundraising and nonprofit experience to her new position. As an alumnus of Kennesaw State University, she is excited to work on projects that will have a direct impact on Town Center, a community that includes her alma mater: “The Town Center CID has shown itself to be an innovator and leader in developing and maintaining beautiful greenspace, trails and parks, making it one of the most desirable communities in metro Atlanta for residents and visitors alike,” said Cain. “I am excited to be a part of the strategic growth of the TCCA and work with the CID’s exceptional staff, leadership and stakeholders to help make a lasting impact on the landscape of the Town Center community.”

It’s Just Grass, Right? GRASSROOTSTURF.COM

Think again. Though it’s easy to take for granted, a beautiful, green and healthy lawn benefits us in many ways. For starters, it adds value to our homes. If you’ve ever tried to sell a home, you know just how important curb appeal is. As the front door to your front door, your lawn provides a first impression for visitors and is a source of pride for you. In a pure biological sense, turf is good for our health. Per the website Pennington. com, “A 50-square-foot lawn produces enough oxygen to meet the daily oxygen needs of four people.” Moreover, lawns provide a safe play space for our beloved pets. But perhaps the most valuable function a healthy lawn serves, is the level of joy it brings to our lives. The lawn is a place where families gather, spend quality time, get exercise and release the stresses of daily life by going outdoors to relax and breathe in fresh air. Just as the inside of our homes require maintenance, so too does the lawn. A lawn that is maintained properly becomes a lot less work and a much bigger source of pleasure when the warm season comes around. While it’s tempting to only consider lawn care in the spring and summer, the truth is, a year-round program brings about the best results. Part of the reason for this is that weeds have different lifecycles throughout the year. Some germinate in cold weather, others in heat. And still others can go dormant, skipping a few years, before coming back with a vengeance. Also, turf that is fed the proper nutrients at strategic intervals, develops stronger roots and becomes more resilient to damage from drought, insects, disease and fungus. And if you’re vigilant about your lawn care throughout the year, you can identify and treat little problems before they become big ones. For 15 years, GrassRoots Tree & Turf Care, headquartered in Acworth, has taken care of their customer’s lawns with great passion. GrassRoots offers year-round turf care programs as well as a mosquito control program all backed by a satisfaction guarantee that’s the best in the industry. To explore the GrassRoots Difference, see the website at grassrootsturf.com.

COACHES - ARE YOU A Role Model? by ray baker, baseball coach

Role models come in many different forms; friends, parents, teachers, and yes athletes and coaches. Coaches, whether you like it or not, that responsibility is on you, it’s on us. Coaches influence so much on the field and off the field, and it starts at the earliest age of a kid participating in sports. If you don’t think so, how many of you know of a kid that quit playing a sport because of a coach? That is one of the saddest stories and I hear it too many times, and it usually involves a very young athlete. It doesn’t stop there with just young athletes; it goes on at every level. Coaches have the power of making or breaking a player’s spirit. I am not saying a coach should never get on a player, and we should only coddle the player. What I am saying is let’s make sure we know our role, our power, our influence, our purpose. Coaches, do you know your role? If you are a youth coach, your job is not to win, period, end of story. Your responsibility is to teach the game, the fundamentals, the enjoyment of the game and the lessons the respective sport brings to your players. If your team wins a few games or even some championship, it’s a nice side note. As the players are older, winning does become a little more important. The coach’s job is to bring out the best in the athlete, continue to teach the game and put them in a position to succeed. Here’s how not to achieve those responsibilities and yes they are responsibilities. Belittle your players, destroy confidence, not getting them motivated, removing the enjoyment of the game. There is a fine line of getting on a player, teaching and belittling a player. Coaches, you have an impact on your players also known as people. That impact can last a life-time and when that impact is positive, many years after they are no longer playing for you, they will still reach out to you, stay in touch. And that right there is the greatest victories because they last a lifetime.

Cobb Superior Court forms Parental Accountability Court

The Cobb County Superior Court will hosted a kickoff event to mark the startup of its Parental Accountability Court program on Friday, March 31 in the Ceremonial Courtroom. The PAC program is a joint effort of the Georgia Division of Child Support Services and Superior Court judges to offer an alternative to incarceration and to help chronic non-payers of child support make regular payments. The PAC program, utilizing existing community resources, seeks to help participating parents address the underlying issues that hinder their ability to support their children, including incomplete education, lack of employment and substance abuse. Cobb Superior Court Judge Ann Harris will preside over the PAC, collaborating with DHS-appointed program coordinator Jackson Sarter, to implement the program in Cobb. The program features intense oversight of participants with court monitoring of their progress so that they can achieve self-sufficiency and parental accountability through corrective services. These services include literacy training and education, employment search, assistance and placement, substance abuse treatment, mentoring and life-skills training, mental health services and volunteer work opportunities. To graduate from the program, participating parents must demonstrate at least six consecutive months of full compliance with their child-support obligation. “Contributing to the financial safety and well-being of your own children is a basic obligation of any parent,” Judge Ann Harris said, “But, incarcerating those who fail to do so is expensive to the taxpayers and does not address the issues often underlying such failure. The PAC model has been a successful alternative to incarceration. Financial stability is good for the children, good for their parents and good for our community.” There are currently 32 PACs operating in Georgia. The DHS reports since fiscal year 2012, the PAC program has helped 2,711 non-custodial parents provide support to 4,780 of Georgia’s children. Program participants paid an estimated $2.8 million in support, which in return, has saved the state more than $10 million in incarceration costs.

Easter Story of Hope By Jerry Samson

I clearly remember the last time I had a close brush with death, and it wasn’t fun. No, I wasn’t trying to imitate Evel Knievel with a motorcycle jump. It happened almost 17 years ago when I had to have emergency surgery. All week long, I knew something was wrong. Being the typical male, I initially resisted the idea of going to the doctor. And so on that mid Friday afternoon, I finally relented. And when my doctor told me to go to the ER right away to have a consult with a surgeon, I knew it was not going to be a good night. As I was about to go to surgery, I told my pastor, “I want to go to Heaven; I just don’t want to go on the next trip!” Thanks to the skilled clinicians at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, I am still here. Although it was a traumatic experience, I can truly say that my faith in Christ calmed my fears about what would happen to me after I die. As a former agnostic, however, I did not always embrace a belief in God and I questioned the reality of Easter and whether the Resurrection even occurred. Acts 26:8 is a verse that could have been written just for me. It says: “Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?” Great question! Many years ago, I read a terrific little book called More Than A Carpenter by Josh McDowell. It is a great read. It made me really think honestly about the claims of Christ, including various evidences concerning the Resurrection. In fact, the hope of Easter is that Jesus Christ offers an amazing promise to those who place their hope in Him for salvation from hell, forgiveness of their sins, and for Heaven. John 11:25 quotes Jesus when He said: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” So, allow me to ask, What about you? If you had to go into emergency surgery tomorrow, not sure if you were going to live or die, would you be ready for eternity? Not only does God want you to receive the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23); He also wants you to have a life of peace without the fear of death. I hope you have a joyful and meaningful Easter! If you have any questions about this or want more information, please email me at Jerrysamson123@gmail.com.

WHAT IS JESUS DOING?

Rev. Sam Storey, Columnist In their Easter preparation work in Sunday School, the teacher asked each student, “What does Easter mean to you?” One kid replied: “Easter means egg-salad sandwiches for the next two weeks.” Okay, it was a bad answer. But it was a good question. What does Easter mean to you? How does it change your life? Does it mean something more than an opportunity for a new spring outfit, a family dinner, and an excuse to bite the heads off all those annoying little purple and pink marshmallow Peeps? Throughout the ages the church has called the weekend after Easter “Low Sunday”. Easter is the highest point in the Christian year. After such a high in our lives, the ordinary seems rather low. With one swift glance inside that barren cavern, the women’s agenda for the day, the their lifetime, was instantly changed. This was not a time for mourning. This was not an ending. This was the beginning of a whole new world...A world in which resurrection is a reality...A world in which death has been destroyed...A world in which Jesus lives forever. A few years ago, Christian youth began to make popular wearing a bracelet that read “W.W.J.D.” Of course we all remember what these initials stood for: What Would Jesus Do? The point was for Christians to look at and consider the issues, problems, decisions facing them and to ask, under these circumstances, “What would Jesus do?” The only real problem with the W.W.J.D analogy is that it is presented in the wrong voice. It’s the question you’d ask of a dead person. Asking “what would Jesus do” intimates that Jesus is no longer a real player, that Jesus’ own activity was in the past and so should be voiced in the past tense. This puts the entire burden of all present and future decisions on our own frail and fallible shoulders. By putting Jesus in the past tense “W.W.J.D” forgets about Easter. Easter puts Jesus in our midst, past, present, and future, forever. For Christians who understand the life-breathing power of Easter the question need never be a hypothetical “what would Jesus do.” Instead, the question is a searching inquiry into “W.I.J.D.”--What Is Jesus Doing? “What is Jesus doing?” (Matthew 28:1-10) Jesus is telling us to get out of the empty tomb and tell others about its barren state. Jesus is telling us to get on the road to Galilee, to a new beginning, and to continue the mission of the Messiah. Easter is not about preserving the memory of a dead person. Easter proclaims Christ is Risen, not two millennia ago, but this morning. We live in the power of Christ’s resurrection. Christ is alive, not for his scared and scattered disciples hiding in Jerusalem, but for each one of us here today. We don’t have to ask W.W.J.D. But we really do need to recognize “What is Jesus Doing” among us on this Easter: W.I.J.D. in your church? W.I.J.D. In your life? W.I.J.D. In your community? W.I.J.D. In your school? W.I.J.D. In your family? W.I.J.D. on the internet? W.I.J.D. In Afghanistan? W.I.J.D. In Jerusalem? W.I.J.D. In Washington, D.C.? W.I.J.D. In your wallet? W.I.J.D. In your heart?

(Rev. Sam A. Storey, Sr.was the Senior Associate Minister, Emeritus, First United Methodist Church of Marietta, Georgia. Rev Sam passed away on Thursday March 2, 2017 after battling heart disease for over two decades. He always wore a smile, had a twinkle in his eye and a story to share. He wrote for us faithfully for seven years. Since his articles are timeless, we will be sharing one each month).
