Jim has had health issues for several years. Last May, Jim was hospitalized for three (3) months, in four (4) different hospitals. Jim nearly died from a very serious surgery and a sepsis body. After coming home, three months later, there was some PT and OT, but that didn’t last long. He was getting stronger, and then all of a sudden in September 2017 he wasn’t able to move his right leg. He could no longer get in his vehicle. A Go Fund Me account was set up to help get a van that he could drive into. That has made all the difference in the world. They still owe on the van and the medical bills are still there, after a three month stay in four hospitals, you can only imagine the debt. COBB EMC RECYCLE DAY

Filing an Extension By Raymond Rhoades, CPA

Has time gotten away from you this year? Are you afraid of owing tax and want to delay payment? Any taxpayer is allowed to request an extension of time to file their tax returns. The extension only allows you additional time to prepare and file the forms. There is no extension of time to pay any tax due. Any additional tax owed is due by April 17. Any return filed after April 17 without a valid, timely filed extension will be subject to penalties and interest. The penalties and interest are all based on the amount of additional tax that is due with the return. If the late filed return shows an overpayment for 2017 there is no penalty for filing late. The Late Filing Penalty is 5% per month or part of a month that the return is late, up to a 25% maximum penalty. Any 2017 taxes paid after April 17 will incur a Late Payment Penalty of 1/2% per month or part of a month, also up to a 25% maximum penalty. In addition, the IRS charges interest from April 17 until the tax is paid. The IRS believes that 3-1/2 months is enough time to make a good estimate of what the total tax liability will be for the tax year. The application for automatic extension of time to file (Form 4868) has only 4 lines: (1) Estimate of total tax liability for 2017, (2) Total 2017 payments, (3) Balance Due, and (4) Amount you are paying. If you file the extension form and your amounts are reasonably accurate, the IRS will not assess the Late Filing penalty (if you actually do file by the extended due date of October 15). If the IRS determines that the estimate was not reasonable or if you do not actually file by October 15 the extension could be null and void and all penalties will be calculated from April 17. Have you finished your returns and know that you owe additional tax, but don’t have the ability to pay? Don’t delay filing. File the returns by April 17 without full payment so that you are in no danger of being assessed the late filing penalty. Pay as much as you can with the return to minimize the late payment penalty and interest. Complete and include form 9465 to request an installment agreement from the IRS.

WHY WE SAY WHAT WE SAY..

For this month’s article, I will focus on the word BLUETOOTH. As technology has become more advanced we needed a way for our different electronic devices to talk to each other. In 1994, the Danish tech company, Ericsson, came up with the idea of creating a new product to fulfill that need. Ericsson brought in partners, Nokia and Intel, to jointly work on this project. At one of the early meetings, they decided they needed a project code name. After some discussion, they picked the name Bluetooth. This was certainly a strange word, but it has an interesting history and is connected to what the technology companies were trying to do. In 970, after the death of the Viking king of Norway, Harald Gormsson took the throne. He had already been the king of Denmark for 12 years. After he became king of both Denmark and Norway, he united the two Viking nations into one. He earned the name “Bluetooth” because he had a dead tooth that had turned a shade of blue. Ericsson, Nokia and Intel, choose “Bluetooth” because their new product united devices like Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson had united Denmark and Norway. Later on, when the product was finished, and the companies were trying to decide on a better name, they couldn’t think of one! An interesting addition to this story is that the Bluetooth logo is a combination of the Viking runes H and B, standing for Harald Bluetooth- see diagram below.

ACWORTH BUSINESS ASSOCIATION Dave McClanahan, CFP® PRESIDENT

Spring has sprung and if you do business in Acworth, or would like to, I want to personally invite you to connect with your fellow business owners and professionals at the Acworth Business Association’s annual Golf Tournament! Our annual Golf Tournament is one of the highlights of the year for our Acworth business community! We will have more than 120 golfers at Cobblestone Golf Course, but you don’t have to golf to be a part and get exposure for your business while having a great time. Tuesday, April 17th is the big day and there is still time to join us as a foursome or tee sponsor. Go to AcworthBusiness.org for details. ABA is also about giving. In Acworth we have one of the most generous business communities around. Every year we give thousands of dollars back to our community from membership dues, event proceeds, and our Presidential Sponsors. Take it from one of our six annual scholarship recipients, Chandler Knight. Chandler says, “By awarding me the ABA Scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden, allowing me to focus on learning… Your generosity fuels my desire to help others. One day, I will be a crucial contributor to the community as a healthcare provider.” In addition to scholarships, we support our teachers, help feed hungry children in our own backyard through our local YMCA, give back to our Veterans through the American Legion, and much, much more. ABA is an investment in your business, and an investment in the Acworth community. Our goal is for everyone who does business in Acworth to join ABA either as member, or get the most “bang for your buck” as a Presidential Sponsor. We need each other, and together we are raising the tide for ourselves and for Acworth. Maybe it’s time for you to get on board the ABA train—there’s no more rewarding train in town.

in honor of staci janecki

Swift Kids began almost 7 years ago with a few community advocates who wanted to get kids out and active and moving. With encouragement from local businesses like Big Peach Running Company, Kennesaw Crossfit and Eaton Chiropractic the ball got rolling. Over the years, while the children have matured into teen coaches our adult coaches have stayed on for each season. As a result the group has become like a family. Every one involved with working with the children are volunteers. One of our most committed volunteers is Staci Janecki. On Valentines Day this year Staci underwent surgery for Breast Cancer and is currently in treatment. In honor of Staci the Swift Kids Running Club will be “pinked out” for the entire year. So when you see Staci’s Squad in the park on Tuesdays and Thursday or at any of the 6 KGP races... give them a high five and tell them way to go. You got this Staci! Pictured above l-r Tracey Viars, Staci Janecki and Dr. Cris Welsh holding this year’s pinked out shirts in support of Staci.

EYE ALLERGIES DR DYLAN REACH

Leaf B Gone

18 APR NC

Millions of people suffer from allergic conjunctivitis during different times of the year. The problem may also be called “allergy eyes” or “ocular allergies”. Itchy eyes are the most common symptom associated with eye allergies, and is triggered by outdoor and indoor allergens. For some, eye allergies can prove so bothersome that they hinder work performance and interfere with leisure or sports activities. In allergic conjunctivitis, it’s the eyelid and the clear membrane of the eye that are affected the most. Symptoms of this problem include, itching, redness, swelling, and discharge. The discharge may be similar to tearing, or it may be thicker and string-like. Other symptoms are burning, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. The eyes are an easy target for allergens and irritants because, like the skin, they are exposed and sensitive to the outside environment. Certain medications and cosmetics also can cause eye allergy symptoms. The body’s response to these allergens and irritants is the release of chemicals, called histamines, which produce inflammation. One of the most difficult things about suffering from allergic conjunctivitis is trying to keep your hands away from your eyes. Rubbing and scratching will only worsen the symptoms. One remedy that seems to help is to apply cold compresses to the eyes and to rinse the eyes and face with cool water. For some, over-the-counter eye drops can bring relief, and antihistamines taken orally can sometimes help relieve the discomfort as well. Many require prescription eye drops to relieve the symptoms. When experiencing the symptoms mentioned above, it’s essential to seek a professional diagnosis. Allergic conjunctivitis often has similar symptoms to more serious problems, such as infections of the eyes. Your eye care professional is best able to treat this condition with specific anti-allergy drops that can keep those red, itchy eyes away and have you back to your life, symptom free. For more information or an appointment, call Dr. Reach at 770-974-3153.

She is also the goalie for Southern Soccer Academy, a top level competitive club sponsored by England’s Premier League, Chelsea. Murray state, located in the Lake District of western Kentucky, dominates the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Division I, and achieved a major goal of competing in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. Cera’s parents, Lori and Steve, are very proud of Cera’s accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom saying, “Cera has continued to work hard to become the best she can at the most difficult position on the field. Her mental strength and coach on the field attitude will serve her well in the next phase of her life.” Pictured: Cera is seated on right, at her signing for Murray State at Allatoona High School, accompanied by teammates and friends.

time they step on the court or the playing field. There is pressure to perform, to come through in the clutch, for their teammates and coaches are there every single game. Nervousness, butterflies the stomach even jitters are running through DATEin the body of the athlete every time, every game. There are some athletes that handle the pressure better than others. We hear the word choke way too often to describe a player when they don’t come through in the clutch. Sometimes it’s not that they didn’t perform but the opposing player simply out performed them on that given moment. A batter hits a game ending groundball with bases loaded to end the game and we want to say he choked. Maybe the pitcher made a perfect pitch and that is all the hitter could do. The fans can be brutal. We hear it every single game we go to no matter what level, from professional all the way down to the youth leagues. Yes parents, your words very well can put so much pressure on your athlete they only hear your words instead of concentrating on performing. Believe it or not, they hear your voice over everyone else’s voice including many times the coaches. Instead of playing for themselves, instead of performing for the moment and their teammates, the unbelievable pressure of performing for you, not wanting to disappoint you, letting you down becomes unbearable. You may be thinking, no way not my kid. I only cheer on my child. Do you? How many instructions do you give your athlete in the middle of a game? How many thoughts are you putting in their head as they are stepping up to the plate? There is enough pressure, do not add to it. Enjoy every moment you get to watch your child play a sport. There will be a time when they no longer play and that time is gone. And you never ever want to hear the words, “please don’t come to my game today, I get too nervous when you are there.”

Early Spring Fishing has arrived

Love is in the air, or in the water I should say. Pre spawn activities were in full swing as the Big Shanty Bassmasters traveled to Lake Oconee, March 10 and 11th for their monthly tournament. The male bass were up shallow hunting for the best spot to prepare a nest for their lady friend. The weather did make a change but at least it wasn’t miserable cold. Day one gave us sunshine in the morning with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Michael Miranda was 1st on the Co- Angler side with 3 fish that tipped the scales at 5.03 lbs, Danny Perdue was 2nd on the Boater side at 3 fish for 4.13 lbs, and Al Frix was 1st on the boater side at 4 fish for 6.08lbs. Day two brought lite rain for much of the day, Bill Scearce was 1st on the Co Angler side at 2 fish for 4.04 lbs, Mike McMahon was 1st on the boater side at 3 fish at 8.04 lbs anchored by a 4.01lb largemouth. Mike reports his two main lure was a Junebug colored trick worm on a jighead and a Carolina rigged lizard in the same color fished on main lake points and secondary pockets. Water temps were right in the mid 50’s and was heavily stained from the rains early in the week leading up to the start of the tournament. As always we welcome new members, both boater and co angler. The 4th graders of local Girl Scout Troop 1980 are passionate about animals and decided to do something to help homeless pets in their community. They approached Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue last September with an idea for a fundraising calendar. Not only are they animal lovers, but they are talented and creative artists as well. They came to our rescue facility to meet adoptable dogs and cats, and then they drew, painted and photographed the animals. The finished calendar was an outstanding and heart-warming way to showcase adoptable animals and bring awareness about homeless pets. Troop 1980 also partnered with Star Printing Company in Acworth, another big supporter of Mostly Mutts, that graciously printed 150 calendars at no charge. The Girl Scouts then distributed the calendars in return for donations to Mostly Mutts, and were very successful thanks to much hard work and dedication. On Saturday, March 3, The girls presented a check in the amount of $1580 to Mostly Mutts. Each of the 10 scouts raised over $140. Charlotte DeMarco from MM told the girls, each pet cost $100 dollars to save. And together the girls saved 15 animals through their art. Charlotte is pictured at the left with the girls and troop leaders.

18 APR NC MARIETTA NEWS AND EVENTS

Marietta’s Gone With The Wind Museum to Relocate to Historic Brumby Hall

MARIETTA – Marietta’s Gone With the Wind Museum is excited to announce that it will move its collection to the Historic Brumby Hall and Gardens located just off the Marietta Square at 472 Powder Springs Street, Marietta, GA 30064. The Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum: Scarlett on the Square has been a mainstay in downtown Marietta since April 2003 when it opened in the historic Old Thomas Warehouse Building. With an extensive collection of memorabilia provided by Dr. Christopher Sullivan the museum is sure to delight and intrigue any Gone with the Wind fan, from novice to aficionado. We now look forward to welcoming both frequent guests and those new to our lovely museum to the Historic Brumby Hall and Gardens, our own little Tara. Brumby Hall has a rich history – one that is equal to the Gone With The Wind story. The first superintendent of the Georgia Military Institute, Colonel Arnoldus V. Brumby, built this lovely Greek revivalstyle house in 1851 with GMI adjacent to the house. When Union General William Sherman’s troops occupied Marietta in 1864, the house was used as a hospital. The GMI buildings were burned as the army departed on its infamous “March to the Sea,” but the house was spared, as Sherman and Brumby had been acquainted with one another at West Point. We will close at our current location on Monday, March 26th in order to carefully move our one of a kind collection to its new home. We will reopen at Brumby Hall by Monday, April 23, 2018. We are honored to not only continue to tell the story of the most iconic movie and film of all time, but also share the rich history of Brumby Hall with all those who visit.

MAY-RETTA DAZE ARTS & CRAFTS

More than 100 local and area artists and craftspeople will display and sell their paintings, pottery, jewelry, and much more at the annual festival. Admission to the festival is free.

Kennesaw’S Two New Officers

Kennesaw Police Department continued to strengthen its force as two new officers were sworn in during a ceremony in March. Officers Erin Bright and Patrick Jarratt stood proudly as they took the oath to protect and serve the citizens of Kennesaw after completing 10 weeks of intense training at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy. The officers experienced firearms training, studied and were tested on their ability to successfully handle situations that involve mental illness, domestic violence and many more. They also were trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Spring is Time to Clean House

Erika Orcutt, Orcutt Law Spring has finally arrived in Georgia, along with the annual ritual of “spring cleaning.” It also means tax time, which creates the perfect opportunity to “clean house” and get your financial affairs in order. Following a few simple steps can make cleaning your financial house relatively painless. First, take an inventory of your assets and liabilities. It sounds intimidating, but it’s just creating a list of what you own and what you owe. It provides a snapshot of where you stand financially and can be a great tool to compare your financial health from year to year. Second, review your financial accounts. Make a list of all financial accounts, where they are held, and the contact information for financial advisors, accountants, or brokers. Can any accounts (or safe deposit boxes) be consolidated or closed? Are you paying too much in fees? Are beneficiary designations current? Third, locate and review all insurance policies. Check your policies to make sure they have not lapsed or expired, you have sufficient coverage, and all beneficiaries are current. Consult with your agent or trusted professional advisor about life or health changes affecting the amount of coverage you need. Fourth, locate and review your estate planning documents. These documents may include a will, trust, power of attorney, advanced healthcare directives, or living will. Have there been any recent life changes in the family like a birth, death, marriage, or divorce? If it has been more than five years since you prepared or updated your estate plan, or if you don’t have one, consult with an experienced estate planning lawyer to ensure you have the proper documents in place to protect your loved ones and your legacy. Finally, if you have minor or special needs children, do you have a plan in place to provide for their care in an emergency? An emergency child protection plan can appoint a temporary guardian while you are incapacitated, or after death until a permanent guardian is appointed, so that the child would not be placed in foster care. While getting your “house in order” seems like work, some spring cleaning efforts now can save you and your loved ones from unnecessary stress, hassles, and expenses later. For more information or appointment, call Erika Orcutt at 678-383-7857.
